In March of 2011 during my journeys into the Sierras in search of Bigfoot I had found that a portion of the old Pony Express runs right through the community of the Woodford's. I remember driving my truck around trying to find remnants, trails and historical sites. I also remember standing by a Pony Express sign with a big grin on my face. When I relocated out west this was the type of journeys I had in mind as being able to chase ghosts and Bigfoot in the mountains adds diversity . Little did I know I would ever visit such a site years later in my paranormal career.

The Woodfords holds the title as the oldest non-native settlement in this region of the Sierras. Even today most of Alpine county is very desolate with 97 percent of wilderness. In 1844 Kits Carson and John C. Fremont made an expedition through the Carson Pass known today as Highway 88. Before anything ever existed in the Woodfords these early explorers passed through here. It was a very important location considering that this is where the Carson Range, High Desert and Alpine Forest meet. It is also the gateway through the high sierras which had harsh winters. The Emigrant Trail passed right through the Woodfords more then often pioneers would stop at this location for its springs.

Sam Brannan at one time left some supplies near the spring in 1847 on his way to Salt Lake City Utah. The settlement began to grow and was called Brannan Springs. This settlement would be situated right along the wagon road leading up deep into California. The name would be changed many times as it would also called Carey's Mills. A post office would be established and a hotel by Daniel Woodford in 1849. After that the community would rest on its final name in 1869 which today is the Woodfords home to over a 100 residents. I read that the post office was closed and reopened when the Woodfords was called Carey's Mill in 1858. Strangely this pattern seem to haunt this community as in 1914 it was closed again then re-established in 1862 only to close for good in 1974.

In April of 1860 Woodfords became a remount station for the Pony Express when Warren Upson climbed the mountains in a snowstorm journeying down the Eastern slope of the Sierra range. He was heading to Carson City and reached the Woodfords from Lake Tahoe via Luther Pass. For about five weeks a remount station was established in the Woodfords for the Pony Express. That same year the Pony Express was rerouted over Echo Summit and the Kingsbury Grade. I suppose that they felt the route was less harsh and shorter.

The Pony Express operated from 1860 to about 1861 and was a mail delivery service for mailmen carrying messages by horseback. Some of them crossed the Rockies, Midwest Plains and the Sierras to deliver messages carrying a Mochila or anotherwards a mail pouch. The Pony Express started in St. Joseph Missouri all the way to Sacramento California. It would take roughly 10 days to deliver the mail as the pouch would be passed rider to rider passing through eight states in total. The mail service was a way for the east and west to communicate before the invention of the telegraph. It would also lead to California supporting the Union and Nevada believe it or not.

One of the longest standing structures today is the CJ's Woodfords station which was renovated then reopened to provide travelers with water, snacks, fishing supplies, camping gear, Sandwiches, Lotto Tickets, Sodas and much more. I often stop here sometimes to get bait or something I may have forgotten on my way to finding a camp spot. Just a few feet actually from the general store was the Remount Station which no longer stands today but a marker educating others where it once stood.

The building that you see in the photos below I called Woodford's Manor due to its stone architecture and size. At one time the manor served as a school which closed in the 1970's when it last held its classes. Not to far from the manor is some mine cart tracks so perhaps this is why this small settlement took on the name of Cary's Mills. An old safe had rested on its side just a matter of 30' from the manor and a patch of road that was paved but overgrown. The stones and mortar appear to have been designed using the materials found throughout Cary Mountain such as granite and copper ore.  It is obvious that before this was a school it may have operated as some other sort of resource. Further up the mountain we found an old water filtration system built right along side Cary Canyons season creek maybe to provide fresh water for the children.

Today the school holds some relics of the past such as old tin cups, wood stove, chalkboard, chairs, desk and even a boys and girls bathroom. It also has a basement, kitchen and storage room. The main floor is all wide open a massive room with chalk boards facing opposite of one another.  The entire floor and furniture is covered with thousands of rat droppings thus the entire building does pose some risk without wearing a mask. The last people to ever enter the property did so in the mid 1990's just to make claim they were there at one time long before urbex ever became main stream.  It is very obvious that many of the schools artifacts were either taken and that the harsh storms in the mountains had also taken a toll on the manor.

The last class to graduate from here was in 1974 a year prior to when I was even born. No more then 20 students attended the school at one time thus graduations did not occur often just as the school outlived its usefulness. Behind the school is the edge of the Carson Range as Cary Peak overshadows it. One name that rang a bell was Mrs. Loganbill who once lived on the Loganbill Ranch one of the most haunted farm houses I ever investigated in my career. In actuality she not only lived locally in the region but also is buried at the Fredericksburg Cemetery just further up the road. As odd as it has become we have stumbled across all three locations that her spirit or essence has been part of.

Cary Peak is a large mountain however much lower in elevation compared to other mountains surrounding it. To reach the peak you would have to climb to 8,697'. This makes it the 800th highest mountain California and the 6715th highest mountain in the United States. Technically you would reach Wades Point, Jobs Peak, Luther Canyon and Genoa Peak from journeying over Cary Summit. Keep in mind that at one time this was also a volcano so at the summit many rock formations and spires protrude towards the sky.

Both Cary and Horsethief Canyon provide seasonal creeks that drain out into the West Fork of the Carson River. Thus the vegetation surrounding the manor and peak is rather lush. At one time horses would be rounded up from Nevada surrounding Genoa and other nearby ranches. They would be led through the Faye-Luther Canyon trail into the Horse Thief Canyon which actually is more like a large valley with a pool of water for the horses to drink water at. The men who ran this scam would sell the horses to pioneers who passed through the Woodfords crossing the Sierras into California.

In the future we will work with the Manor Schoolhouse, Mt. Cary, Horsethief and Cary Canyons more then a couple times. We want to be able to experience what the Pony Express was truly about. The area today is littered by old ranches, springs, mill remnants and even from what I read mines. So you can consider these adventures a mix of Crypttozoology and Ghost all meshed together. Considering that we have tracked down Sasquatch hotspots within the Carson Range one can see the Woodfords as a gateway deep into the Sierras. So possibly saying this is Bigfoot country really does not sound at all that far out.

The manor itself has a tile roof very large thick doors and the place is built to withstand the harshest of winters. It is also haunted in my opinion as we watched a door slam shut with our very own eyes. This also goes with the heavy EMF spikes which led us to a sealed door what lies beyond it is a mystery I sure would like to unravel. The EVP's collected were all taken within a few feet of the manor. Behind that is a place we named Witchwood which is a series of close together trees and brush which block out the light of the sun. On this very path a set of deer antlers just a matter of 30' apart appeared out of nowhere when we were standing with our backs turned and found them on route back to the manor.

What intrigues me is the great views, thrill of a historical forgotten manor and what waits to be explored up at the summit which overshadows the manor as well as the Woodfords settlement. Technically this is where it all started when California began to boom in the 1860's. It was the mills, stations, mail, wagon trails and communities that allowed the pioneers to lighten their journey through the sierras. Many of the pioneers who crossed the Sierras into NV had one sole purpose and that was to work in the mines. Some went bust while others truck it rich however one thing has not changed is the landscape and pretty views. The school is haunted but just behind it raises even a much larger question which is does Bigfoot roam in the woods behind it? As the manor continues to be consumed by naturea chilling coldness lurks peering out its windows awaiting its next visitor.
Perhaps a harmless child's laughter or the sound of light footsteps define an impression in the time continuum copying its physical history.

You can see the school/manor at the bottom of the wash which is a seasonal creek. Further ahead is Cary Canyon and Peak.
