Over 250 million years ago the Sierras and eastern edge of them known as the Carson Range were nonexistent. Believe it or not the mountains you see depicted in our photos were at one time a mere flat basin under a vast ocean. Today the oceans have receded and volcanic eruptions began to occur 10 million years ago mixing that with the faults found within the earth these mountains are still being pushed upwards today. The Carson Range has one of the highest seismic hazards in the states of NV and CA. This is why the Eastern Sierras are so steep as opposed to the Western ones containing gradual foothills into the valley of California as rock is always being pushed upwards. The Jobs Peak region is very steep as it truly is the beginning of where the sierras began separating alpine forest from Nevada's high desert with some of the best views of the Carson Valley which is home to towns like Gardnerville, Minden and even Carson City the state capital.  The mountain is named for Moses Job who in the early 1850s opened a store in a community nearby called Sheridan. BTW Jobs is pronounced as "Joabs" just so you can understand its pronunciation and how it is sounded out.

The region is home to a wide variety of butterfly species, lizards, snakes, scorpions, mammals, bird life and plant species. Its amazing how your hike starts off in the high desert with sage brush growing everywhere eventually transitioning into a vast forest with lush canyons. Although Jobs peak consist of decomposed granite making it one of the more challenging mountains to conquer as its a world in itself. The Californian Toad, Broad-Tailed Humming Bird, Deer, Mountain Lion, Black Bear, Screech Owls, Red-Breasted Nuthatch, Lewis's Woodpecker, Scorpions, Rattlesnakes, Bobcats, Chipmunks, Ringtails, Bullock's Oriole and Yellow Warbler can all be found here. In addition to all the wildlife found within these Jeffrey Pines something else also lurks this region leaving tracks behind as large as 20" making it apparent that something giant has been thriving within this range known as "Sasquatch" based on our finds. Also Mistletoe grows quite in abundance here and wildflowers. Due to the heavy foliage it makes it a great location for something to hide overlooking the towns of Carson Valley below out of pure curiosity.

Although their is allot of abundant life found here their is also a fresh abundant source of water known as Luther Creek which at one time flowed into the Carson River. Today the creek flows into the Carson Valley irrigating many of the ranches that reside below Jobs Peak. Although their are no longer fish found in the creek which travels for over 5,000' at one time cutthroat trout were abundant here and could have been a food source for the local Washoe Indians. Generally most of the year the peaks you see in the photo above are snow covered throughout the year so that when summer arrives water flows into the Carson Valley which consist mainly of cattle ranches and farms.

Some of the first pioneers traveled the trails between the canyons of Jobs peak and by 1869 nearly 250,000 traversed them. Prior to this time period the Washoe people would migrate through the Jobs peak area making their way in the warmer months to Lake Tahoe! The Lonesome trail cemetery came later on and serves as a reminder that for 9,000 years it was this tribe that hunted, fish, collected and lived below Jobs peak. In the 1840's some of the first white explorers came through these canyons and migrated into the Carson Valley using some of Jobs Peaks trails.

One of the earliest families to have arrived or to have rather lived on Jobs peak was the Luther family. It was in 1858 that Ira Luther built his house along Luther Creek and named the canyon after him. The creek ran right through his wine cellar keeping his perishable food cool and prevent it from spoiling. Only a year later would he build a sawmill along Luther Creek which started a trend for others migrating to the area to make sure of other creeks nearby. The sawmill had a giant water wheel and the wood that was being used was logged right along the creek and thus a demand for the timber was required for the Comstock in Virginia City NV. Although the mill only stayed in business for a year it just added to Jobs Peak pioneer history! It makes you kind of curious as to what the Luthers, Washoe or Pioneers came across on this peak. As did they also find large tracks or have sightings of a large creature that they encountered on this mountain? Jobs Peak has so many secluded locations that are nearly impossible to get to all the way from natural dens to sheer cliffs. It would be no surprise that it could provide shelter for a creature like Bigfoot to sustain itself very few pioneers ever stuck around while living in these woods.

Ira Luther once had an incident at his own saw mill where his foot became caught in one of the blades. Their were no doctors nearby at the time the Carson Valley was very blank meaning no towns or many camps. He was stuck having to cut some of his toes off with a razor it was either that or die. Back in the day a bottle of whiskey and sutures were a way of life. Either that your would cauterize your wounds to prevent infection otherwise it meant death. Luther crossed the pass between Hope Valley and Lake Tahoe in 1854 and tried to get the Central Pacific Railroad to operate through what is called today Luther Pass. He was a man involved in logging, politics, mining, real estate, farming, ranching and many other projects. It is truly amazing that I have the opportunity to explore the mountain for cryptids but also be in the middle of its historical significance.

Another well known family that came to the region was the Faye Family who established one of the first ranches in 1863 in the Carson Valley. They also utilized the Luther Creek to irrigate their lands all the way up until about 1920. Fay Canyon was named after the family which is found in the Jobs peak region. They would hunt ducks around the Carson River, Mud Lake and the Centerville Pond which btw still exist today. Some of the first cattle raised in the valley were bred here and today cattle ranching is a big business in what once was a valley full of sage brush. Another interesting fact is that the Fay family was the first family who possibly had running electricity which they used on the ranch and provided for their local neighbors. They actually built a flume which came out of Faye canyon later they upgraded it to having a generator, pipe line and a Pelton waterwheel. I can imagine how much the ranch stood out lit up at night compared to the rest of the valley as opposed to how it looks today from atop of Wades Point or Jobs Peak.

The opposite canyon on the northside of Jobs Peak is called Freedom Canyon. A creek also runs through the canyon which drains out near Genoa which contributes to its rich soil and land. Unlike the lush green Luther Canyon which is full of life freedom canyon is the exact opposite. Although Freedom Canyon contains heavy foliage at lower elevations it is full of steep cliffs and loose rocks. Its near impossible to traverse which is why the early Washoe tribes migrated Luther Canyon instead.

Another interesting fact is that after 1865 when ranchers began to settle the area Luther Canyon was also called Horse Thief Canyon. John and Lute Olds owned a ranch to the south and operated a station along the nearby emigrant trail. Between Jobs Peak and Wades Point the horses would be rustled up from the Emigrants then sent up the canyon where they would end up settling over a nearby ridge at a place known as Horse Meadows. I can only imagine how rough of a climb it was for the horses I have stood atop of Wades Point and its extremely steep however on the other side of it is the Woodfords a small community where the Olds would resell such horses to those traveling the emigrant trail. Their was nothing honest about their way of business then again the wild west was a harsh way of living.

Not to far from the Luther House a prospector called "Sawtooth" was murdered and buried in the Olds barn nearby. The man known as Sam Brown was a bad man who was shot and killed by a man he threatened known as "Lucky Bill" Thorington which he was hanged for by vigilantes. Lucky Bill had a ranch in 1858 a couple miles south which later became the site of the old Fairview school house. The children had little books and their were no grades. Most of the time prior to the 1900's the education was very poor. Their were children who lived on these ranches they were not schooled very much due to the fact that the Carson Valley was just not developed yet thus they worked helping on the ranches. Not much has changed today from atop of Jobs Peak and other lookout points surrounding the mountain you can still see many of these ranches some still have wagons left behind from the 1800's.

One last piece of history was the man known as Snowshoe Thompson who resided in Genoa and became the father of California Skiing. For twenty years Thompson traversed the sierras delivering US Postal Mail never making a single red cent. He was a kind man that offered to help just about anyone and their were times he rescued those who were caught up in these mountains. During the winter the weather surrounding Jobs peak is fierce with winds exceeding 90 mph and snowfalls well over 6' at a time. Technically he was the first person who would traverse the Sierra Nevada's during the winter months making journeys often to Placerville on his skis. As you know Placerville is a good 60 mile journey from Genoa but in addition he made deliveries to some of the local ranchers below Jobs peak as well. He never carried a gun, extra clothing nor blankets. All he ever had with him were some matches, dried foods and a bible. His sack often had medicines, mail, newspapers and tools totally as much as 80lbs. Sadly at the age 49 he passed away from appendicitis and he is buried in Genoa Historic Cemetery. This man left behind a legacy and is very well known today in the Carson Valley. Back in the 1800's Wolves and Grizzly Bears were quite common surrounding the Jobs peak area. Today the Grizzlies are extinct from the region but their is something else that lurks these woods and it may have been for centuries far before the pioneers settled the region.

I spend many of my days bbqing and admiring Jobs peak from my backyard. Perhaps what drew me to exploring this area of the Carson Range was that its one of the tallest peaks in the region. Its not just one of the tallest but one of the most challenging climbs to take on. You have a rich history surrounding the mountain but their is allot of mystery to it also. Although their are not many documented Bigfoot sightings their are some in the region as it would be very simple for something like a creature to be able to come down the mountain to hunt just as quick as it could head up over Luther Canyon disappearing off into the high sierras. Whatever it is something is creating these tracks and I believe it has a taste for deer based on our research here. We may never have all the answers to these monsters that hide in the Jobs Peak woods but one thing is for sure our research is quite compelling as our theories turned into a reality that something is lurking!

One thing is for sure sometimes its better some things remain undiscovered not only to protect such a creatures existence but the fact that it keeps you on your toes. When you look at all the evidence such as the tracks, stool samples, tall broken tree limbs and history to the region you never know what you may find here. Their are so many secluded places all overlooking the beautiful Carson Valley below. One can only imagine a creature such as Sasquatch perched on a ledge looking down onto the valley wondering when mankind will close upon him! Until then these monsters in the woods will continue to thrive leaving their footprints behind!
