Nevada's first settlement was called Mormon Station which resides below the massive Genoa Peak and Sierra Canyon. The Washoe Tribe which dominated the Carson Valley for many centuries would make pilgrimages in the warmer months to Lake Tahoe traversing the Sierra Canyon. The Carson Range is extremely steep as matter in fact they continue to rise and serve as your gateway into the Sierra Nevada's. The peak is located in the Toiyabe National Forest. Technically speaking it is the highest point between the Kingsbury Grade and Spooner Summit. Its views from atop Genoa Peak are quite encompassing to say the least with Lake Tahoe to the west and the vast Pine Nut Mountains to the east. With views of the snow capped Desolation Wilderness, Sierras and Carson Valley it is a rewarding peak to climb.

The Sierra Canyon is that gateway up into Lake Tahoe and by standing on Genoa Peak you are given some of the best views of both worlds one being the Carson Valley below the other being Lake Tahoe as it is surrounded by the might peaks of the high sierra. We know that the Washoe people hunted in this canyon as Jarrod found a large broken arrow head here. The canyon is full of wildlife and its very lush to sustain larger game but the real question is does or did Sasquatch at one time roam this region?

What I had hoped to bring our viewers by this expedition is to give them a birds eye perspective as to what the early Washoe and Emigrants in the region had to endure. Just beyond the canyon and its might peak this beautiful gem known as Tahoe exist. For anybody who values the outdoors as much as our society does then you know climbing from Nevada's first settlement all the way to the top of Genoa Peak is going to have its rewards. Although the view has not changed in many centuries the amount of people in the Valley and Sierras has thus impacting the possibility that Bigfoot may or may not be present here. Of course based on our research and other nearby expeditions we are proof positive that Sasquatch much like the Washoe may have used this lush canyon to gather food.

Although sightings of such creatures such as Bigfoot are rare they have occurred within the Sierra Canyon beyond Nevada's first settlement. As crazy as it seems it people encroaching on these lands that is pushing such cryptids deeper into the wilderness. This may be why more Bigfoot sightings occur in the nearby Desolation Wilderness then they do along the Carson Range present day. Nonetheless, our viewers are able to see what it would take to journey into the sierras for miles on foot as we began our journey in the Carson Valley and eventually end up leaving the high desert behind. This journey would take us eventually into a lush alpine forest and give some of you the best scenic views 360 degrees of the region.

Although trappers and early explorers made their way into the Genoa region it would not to be till 1851 when John Reese established a trading post here. This would attract settlers and eventually grow into a permanent settlement which still is very much alive today. Reese and his other fellow Mormons claimed the land below Genoa Peak as it was very lush, green and their was a fresh water supply. Not to mention the fact that the Sierra Canyon throughout the years has a creek that flows consistently dumping on out into the valley.

John Reese soon after his trading post built a house for his family in NY eventually adding a blacksmith shop and a corral for his livestock. The Overland Emigrant Trail went right through Mormon Station which today is now known as Genoa's Main Street. When Reese was called back in 1857 to Genoa it was either traded or sold to emigrants who came to the valley to make a life for themselves. He made allot of business dealings to secure the longterm existence of this settlement.

But how did Genoa get its name? Well as the story goes an Orson Hyde who was an elder within the Mormon Church was sent to the station which as the time was Utah not Nevada territory. He was visiting here to survey the town into lots, set up a government and define the state line between California and Utah Territory. He renamed the Mormon Station to "Genoa" in 1855. Hyde who was an admirer of Christopher Columbus named the town after his birth place which was Genoa, Italy. Orson Hyde was the first probate judge and all court matters were settled in the lost of the trading post. In order to get up into the loft you would have to climb a ladder at the same time it was also used as a hotel for pioneers.

Genoa eventually became a commercial and agricultural center during the early pioneer days. It actually took the county seat in Douglas County. The marshes which surrounded Wally's Spring were drained so that farms could build pastures for livestock and grow the grains to feed them. Barns were built in Genoa with blacksmith shops so that seeders, plows, mowers and other farm equipment could be made. The Danish, Italian, English, Welsh, Irish and Germans flocked to the area making the valley what it is today. Unlike most of the valley being full of sage brush Genoa more or less was full of green foliage. Most early pioneers realized that this land was fertile and could be used for raising livestock or even as much to say as growing vegetables.

Genoa Peak standing at over 9k overshadows Nevada's first settlement as well as Minden, Gardnerville, Carson City, Lake Tahoe, Indian Hills and Jacks Valley. Carson Valley is Nevada's state capital. It was a center for silver mining hence how Nevada gets its name the Silver State. The nearby mining in the Comstock Lode in Virginia City was a direct result for the forming the State Capital to boom especially since currency was Minted at todays present day NV State Museum. When in 1861 the Nevada territory was formed Carson was made its capital. The Valley was named after a Kit Carson who was one of the first explorers who came to the region along with John C. Fremont in 1843. Christopher "Kit" Carson was a scout who has had many landmarks in the region named after him including the Carson River.

Today just beyond Genoa is a world away from a world filled with lizards, exotic birds, butterflies, black bear, deer and other wildlife found in the region. It all starts with hiking from the Genoa Historic Cemetery for thousands of feet up over the Carson Range. It is not a hike but rather a journey one filled with cliffs, waterfalls, wildlife, flowers and some of the most spectaculars views of Genoa below. Although Genoa may just be Nevada's most historic town and oldest settlements its also a wonder to admire from atop of the peak. You can also see Mottsville Cemetery and Genoa Mormon Fort Station from the peak both locations we have done case work with.

Although we do not have much definitive proof that Bigfoot today still roams this lush sierra canyon we are know that now and then he does leave some evidence behind in this region. One of those nearby region is Jobs Peak which can be seen easily from atop of Genoa Peak. However as man expands throughout the Carson Valley so does the amount of explorers like myself that wander this world away from a world. Back in the day well known individuals such as "Snowshoe Thompson", Kit Carson and the Washoe Tribe traversed these very same forest you are about to see throughout our updates. So as beautiful as this lost world is it's also historically significant! You can see from our photos that its very alluring, vast and offers some of the best views of the entire Carson Valley which today continues to grow!
