Our journey to Unionville would began by crossing over the Humboldt Mountain Range which is full of massive peaks that tower above the vast expanses of the Nevadan high desert. This range is home to a few ghost towns such as Star City and Rochester. During the winter the range stays snow covered and summers can be harsh here. Everything from black bear, antelope and wolves are found here. Their are also cattle that roam the range and some footage of beautiful wild horses with their young. We welcome our viewers to enjoy the Humboldt Valley, picturesque views, creeks, various peaks such as Thunder Mountain and Star Peak as we journey over the range then parallel along it as we seek out the remote hamlet of Unionville Nevada. Back in the day these various dirt roads were used by stage coaches, ox wagon and early pioneers who ventured to various mining camps. Today they are explorers dream as when the pavement ends the adventure begins. This vast wilderness has not changed in over a thousand years the Native Americans consider it a very sacred location.	As you head west towards the Humboldt Range the opening to Buena Vista Canyon is full of ranch land, old barns and agricultural life. This is a free range so its not uncommon to see cattle roaming the outskirts of town and not much has changed since the town first came to be. The deeper you head into the canyon the more prevalent the town site becomes. Its very scattered such as relics of the past, wooden barns, miner cabins, stone walls and old fence post which are testament to the towns boom years. During the filming of this video the locals were watching me out there windows while a lady went back in her home to get her dogs which she was using to intimidate me despite the fact I stood outside the property lines. It was apparent at this point of the expedition that my presence was not welcome in historic Unionville! One can see how diverse the town site is and extensive. One can stand on main street looking west and see that Unionville extends for three miles into the Humboldt Range.

The remnants and rusty relics of the past remain scattered along the canyon floor. Some of those including old wagons, carts, meat grinder, vintage vehicles, wagon wheels and glass. All signs that signify that Unionville was once a bustling hamlet full of life at one time. These pieces of the past tell a story one about pioneer and miner life in this silver town. This very area where these historical remnants are found was an encampment for the Reed - Donner Party. During the filming of this location the owner of the Old Pioneer Garden B&B came out to to ream us for exploring the town site and was very rude. He ended up calling the owner of the land when it was unmarked and their was no fencing. In turn after I turned off my camera one of the locals try to run me over with their truck. Its very obvious that within the Unionville even today the west is still very wild and that the locals do not like outsiders exploring the town even if they are trying to do credible research. No less these relics were used by some of the towns most notable residents who came here seeking success and to build a life here.	As we head deeper into the canyon your going to see one of the best preserved schoolhouses and one of Nevada's only covered bridges. This creek and its natural springs served as a lifeline for the pioneers who came here. The miners harnessed the water using Sleuths and Rockers but it also provided water to the towns thousands of residents during its hey day. Buena Vista Canyon begins to narrow and the foliage becomes lusher as we work our way to the heart of where Unionville truly begin. Some of the sites we bring to you are the finest in the state of Nevada including the stone work which was laid by Masons along the creek that still standing strong since the mid 1800's. Sites like your seeing in this video are today off limits as many of the locals are turning the town site into their own backyards and unfortunately some of them we can only film from the fence lines. No less the history that does remain although scattered was once part of Unionville's Silver boom! A ranch found back here is called Dixie named after the original town name which was started by confederate sympathizers in 1861 until those who supported the Union outnumbers them and had it changed to Unionville.

Today this park is considered an oasis its also home to Samuel Langhorne Clemens aka Mark Twain's dugout cabin. Twain came here in 1861 when the town was erected back in the day surrounded his home their was 11 cabins and a liberty pole. Some of the regions oldest cottonwood trees are found here and it resides on the edge of the mining district as it borders the edge of town. Twain built this home with his hands as at one time before a roof was put on it had canvas over it. He came here as a prospector to try a hand in mining but found out that it was very hard work and had very little luck. He tried using a shovel, pick axe and prospecting only to be disappointed that what he thought was Silver turned out to be Mica. He wrote a book called "Roughing It" which described his experience in Unionville mentioning that the sun reached only the top of the Humoldt Mountains and that this was a very harsh place to live. More then often livestock such as cattle would awaken him in the middle of the night as they peered inside his cabin or walked over his furniture. Twain described the canyon to be cold and very difficult to live due the harshness of the extreme winters. Due to this factor it really led to Twain's rise as a writer one of Unionville's most notable residents. He would move on to Virginia City to work for the Ledger. Included in this video is a series of scenic photography that Twain would have seen while residing here.	The town site of Unionville stretches for three miles and where the canyon narrows is where its mining district begins. The Arizona Mining Company yielded over 3 million dollars of Silver within this very canyon. Very little remains of the mines but a few dump piles but the mills, shafts, machinery, ore chutes, bins and wood head frames are long gone. Back in the day many of the miners were working day and night with their pick axes chipping away at the rich veins found along the canyons wall. The Chinese came here also to work the mines which caused allot of anger and hatred of many of the locals. Eventually this led to the Anti Chinese Union which was responsible for secretly ousting 35 Chinese miners from Unionville which led to 18 white miners being charged with federal crimes. The Silver boom lasted from 1861 to about 1872 those were the towns good years. However mining did continue as late as 1905 and eventually all the Silver veins were depleted which led to the town transitioning from its mining industry to agriculture. If you pay very close attention you will see that allot of iron is present in the steep walls of the canyon and volcanic spires. Before the town was erected the Indians in Virginia City showed some prospectors some rich Silver Ore then led them to this very location that you are seeing in this video. This led to Unionville's boom while much of the silver was processed here the higher grade ore was exported for processing in Sacramento California.

This special clip contains more footage of the school and the heart of downtown Unionville. I also attached a gallery of the towns most prominent structures and B&W photos. Lumber had to be brought in while many of the stone structures were made with native volcanic rock by the Masons. Unionville began as a hamlet in 1861 it had a brewery, school, church, hotels, saloons, three newspapers, post office, mills, business, residences, wagon shop, stores and as many as three thousand residents. It was a large town that stretches for nearly three miles while today many of the sites you see are in ruins they are a reminder that this location was a an oasis that resided deep in the Nevadan frontier. Life was very harsh here their were no amenities and even Mark Twain referred to this location as a poverty stricken mining camp that lacked many luxuries that many other mining camps had. As one can see downtown is rather extensive full of miner cabins, stone walls and other structures that once served the towns residents. Some of them are the finest historic structures found in the wild west and continue to remain symbolic in regards to the towns history.	The graveyard resides and greets those who enter Buena Vista Canyon. Every grave tells a tale about how difficult life was in the wild west and living within the Humboldt Mountains. It is very apparent that many of the interments are unmarked while children often faced the brute end of this wild frontier while one grave signifies that the individual was killed by Indians. Many of the grave sites found here are crumbling, toppled or have succumbed to the elements. While other ones are some of Unionville's notable residents who left their mark within the towns rich history. The valley the graveyard resides is rather scenic with a snow capped scenic back drop and vast expanse. During our exploration of this cemetery we found a skull, bone fragments that were ground up and even a dead rat that drowned in a hole. Also found here is a John Henry Kinkead's 13 year adopted old child the third governor of Nevada who spent sometime in Unionville another notable resident. This graveyard is symbolic not only to the town but a fine example of early pioneer history which contains many brave souls who dared to venture deep within wild vast frontier in hopes of fulfilling their dreams of discovering the towns rich silver.
