Santa Cruz Memorial Park Cemetery had been formed in 1862 just a short time after Evergreen Cemetery was formed just a few miles away. But when it begin it was the Independent Order Of Odd Fellows Lodge that purchased a plot along the San Lorenzo River just below Mission Santa Cruz & The Holy Cross Catholic Church. The Odd Fellows are very similar to other fraternal groups like the Masons and have practiced a longstanding tradition of funeral ceremonies like the English Guilds hundreds of years ago. The Odd Fellows believed in caring for the dead so back in the day they assured that orphans and even poor peasants had gotten a proper burial. Countrymen thought this was a bit odd naming them "Odd Fellows". The cemetery today has a long standing history of haunts, ghost stories and tales which is what drew my interest in visiting here so that I could bring our viewers not only this beautiful graveyard but also tickle your fancy with its tales of ghosts including the Lady In White.

Over the years people at night have seen dark shadowy figures, heard disembodied voices and seen ghost walking among the tombstones. Some people have even stated that an evil spirit assaults people driving through here at night or rather there car by scratching it or even pounding on the windows. Maybe the ghost is trying to chase others away its hard to know for sure. The ghost often sighted here is a man wearing overalls carrying a shovel some folks think it was the cemeteries former caretaker or undertaker who may have spent most of his life chasing teenage kids out of here at night who may have been partying or vandalizing gravesites. Supposedly the body of William Waddel can be found here or his gravesite but someone had stolen his arm so the cemetery over the years has had some level of desecration. Although with that being said its definitely in better condition then its sister graveyard known as Evergreen Cemetery

The cemetery also has many notables buried within so before I talk about The White Lady lets talk about some of the historical figures you can visit while touring the grounds of this lovely place. One of the first of the notables id like to discuss is a man by the name of Fred Swanton who a very successful New Yorker who came to Santa Cruz to promote tourism. He was responsible for the first gas light system in the city which later became the Santa Cruz Electric Light and Power Company. The Union Traction Company ran streetcars from Santa Cruz to Capitola and Swan developed the first phone system for Santa Cruz County in the 1880's. He also constructed the Neptune Casino and Pleasure Pier which led to today's Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. I had the opportunity to visit the Neptune which today is no longer a casino but rather a giant arcade. Swanton also was serving as major in the 1920's and 1930's and brought film directors to the city for the silver screen which was used in a variety of backdrops in many earlier films of that era.

Originally from Ireland a woman by the name of Mary McDermott can also be found buried in the memorial park coming to the city in 1866. She was a local waitress in some of the local bars and restaurants during the 1970's and became eventually a successful prostitute. She came here poor to the area due to the potato famine in Ireland and in just a short time became one of the most prosperous madams of one of the most successful brothers located in Santa Cruz. Unfortunately she fell in love with a man by the name of Tim Collins who ended up stealing everything from her which led to Mary turning towards alcoholism and dying of Dropsy at the age of 40. More or less Mary lived a sad tragic life despite her success she lost everything all in the name of love.

Then we have a man by the name of Joseph Smallwood who was an African American man who led the civil rights movement just a few days before the Civil War during Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. He was a barber born in Maryland in 1814 and had parents that were ex slaves when their freedom had been granted when England banned slavery in Jamaica. Smallwood had gotten married moving his family to Philadelphia where he set up his own barbershop in Northern Mulberry. When gold was discovered in Coloma California at Sutters Mill he signed up as a ship steward bound for California arriving in California by the summer of 1849 leaving port to become a miner. When the gold ran out he went back to San Francisco in 1863 then moved down the coastline to Santa Cruz where he became a leader in the local black community up until his death in 1880. He helped secure voting rights and other civil liberties for blacks. He also was an editor for the African American press a newspaper on the west coast. He fought to integrate public schools and sponsored several students who went on to attend the University of Berkeley.

Just like every cemetery this one has had its fair share of love and loss also. On the grave of Henry and Marion Meyrick an epitaph reads "A mothers treasure dead The Staff on which my years should lean Is broken are those years come o'er me. Supposedly this is a true story about a young couple similar to the literary lovers known as Romeo and Juliet. The two of them grew up as children and when they became of legal age they did marry. Marion was very outgoing energetic and fun loving while Henry was a bit more reserved and shy. Unfortunately Marion became ill and nobody could find out what was ailing her so she ended up dying in 1887 at the age of 20 leaving Henry a young widower. Sadly Henry a year later was so depressed and sad that he went to her gravesite in 1888 and shot himself in the heart with a small pistol. Today they are buried side by side so tragic. Supposedly there is a stained glass window found at the local Cavalry Episcopal Church in Santa Cruz that depicts St. Cecilia the Patroness Saint of Music that had been dedicated to Marion Meyrick.

Frederick Hihn was a very well known historical figure in Santa Cruz he also came to the area as an immigrant like most of the pioneers to make their lives on the waters of Monterrey Bay. Hihn was involved in social life, commercial and political venues. Hihn left Germany to come to the US in 1829 but also started off as a miner during the gold rush. He later became a merchant traveling from San Francisco to Sacramento and eventually settling in Santa Cruz. When he arrived in Santa Cruz he took an interest in local railroading, lumbering, mining and real estate. He was the county's first millionaire and a philanthropist. Also he was a state assembly man, school trustee and ran multiple charities for the good folks of Santa Cruz especially during Christmas and Easter the family would open there doors to their home then shower them with gifts. When he passed away in 1913 it was one of the largest funerals as his role in the community was larger then life itself.

One of the more well to do women buried in the cemetery is Georgiana Bruch Kirby who was born in Bristol England and in 1818 she was advocating for women's rights and civil liberties. When she was just a mere teen she came to the US and eventually became a school teacher. She joined the members of the elite Transcendentalist community near Boston known as the Brook Farm Colony. With that being said she was influenced by some of the most knowledge men and women of her time which included Nathaniel Hawthorne, Ralf Waldo Emerson and Margaret Fuller. The Transcendentalist were a group of people who developed ideologies throughout the 1830's and 1840's and had some very intriguing beliefs. They believed that spirituality transcends the physical and is realized only through the individuals intuition rather then through the doctrines of organized religion. At the Brook Farm Georgiana focused on her ingellectuality and spent time with many big name new age philosophers. By 1850 Goregiana came to the West Coast settling in Santa Cruz and founded the Santa Cruz Society of Suffragist marrying a local tanner by the name of Richard C. Kirby. One of her friends who resided at Brook Far Eliza Farnham visited Santa Cruz and together they made headlines nationally with there views on abolitionism, women's suffrage, spiritualism and the science of phrenology in the rehabilitation of prisoners. Both were authors that made a huge impact on many social and political issues during there time. Sadly Georgiana died in 1887 and her grave can also found within the cemetery.

While their are many notables found within this gorgeous cemetery it also contains the graves of many children and adults who died in epidemics and tragedies. None other then the Diphtheria Epidemic of 1876 really was a sad time in Santa Cruz's history. This epidemic did not just effect the children of Santa Cruz but it also struck quite a few ghost towns our team has investigated across the west and the only sign that this had occurred are the thousands of children which often can be seen in many local historical cemeteries throughout California and Nevada. The Summers of 1876 and 1878 were very difficult years because mostly young people were effected by this illness ranging from infancy all the way to later teens. At least 175 children died in Santa Cruz from this epidemic most were buried the next time due to the parents not wanting to spread the plague to other children including any siblings. During this time period anyone could pick up a newspaper read a death notice often with a children's memorial poem. One family the Hinds who owned a local music and station store lost four children ranging from five years old to eight months. The first died on Thanksgiving day in 1876 and the last child died that same year on Christmas all buried side by side.  If you walk around this cemetery your going to come across the graves of quite a few children its rather tragic considering they never had gotten to live full lives.

Just like most of the young men who lost their lives in the 1898 Powder Mill Explosion where a towering marble pedestal resides that contains a large urn draped in a long flowing hand carved masonry mourning cloth. Thirteen young men lost their lives during this tragedy when the California Powder Works exploded on April 26th that year where three explosions rocked Santa Cruz. In fact it was so loud and powerful all the residents of Santa Cruz heard it from inside their homes. While their was 13 men who lost their lives others stated that many more died but nobody knows for sure. The first explosion was the loudest then two milderones came shortly after followed by smoke rising from the mill. The fire that had spread was moving towards the main magazine so a bugle call was heard which sounded for help from members of the California Naval Reserve who came immediately to help the fire fighters on the scene to quickly put it out. It was the cotton plant that the fire had started which spread to other bushes and eventually the mill site.

I am a bit confused if it was an actual cotton plant, gun cotton or a cotton factory that had made clothing. Employees on site, firefighters and Naval Reserve used shovels and other tools to put out the flames. This was because there was no water nearby to put the flames out. Eventually after the explosion this mill would never be the same. When the powder works were built this was known as Paradise Park just a couple miles north of the city right along the old Southern Pacific Coast Railroad. It was a huge complex with twenty one powder mills, three shops, six magazines, stores and thirty five other buildings along the San Lorenzo River stretching nearly a mile. I never found out while doing research why water was so scarce since this mill was near the river perhaps at the time the river was to low or the firefighters had to no way to utilize it.  While 13 men died possibly even more their were many more injured from burns and the explosion which really hit home for the residents of Santa Cruz.

A very popular story has been shared surrounding this cemetery known as the White Lady of Santa Cruz who appears dressed in a bloody white gown. I hear so many stories about her ghost being seen walking down the street from the cemetery all the way up to the Masonic Club nearby. Some folks claim that she whispers to others about killing them then again back in the day local high school kids would hang white dressed in the trees near the cemetery which may have explained some of the white lady sightings. Supposedly at one time their was a home near the cemetery that she was often associated with haunting it which was torn down in 2000 maybe 2001. Apparently it was a local kids hang out with plenty of graffiti and the roof was missing due to a fire in 1970. People say on a hill nearby is a cement slab where the house once stood. I tried to locate it and did not have much success but if you go up to Quail Crossing nearby maybe you will have more success.

I have done plenty of reading on the white lady and their are so many different versions about who she might be. The main legend dates back to the 1870's and tells of a woman from Massachusetts who came here as a mail order bride. She came out to Santa Cruz to marry some old German drunk who use to beat her. Apparently he would often force her to wear her white wedding dress then get drunk raping perhaps beating her. When she decided to leave him because he was a bad husband he found before she could make her escape. He supposedly beat her to death then chopped her head off setting the house on fire with the body inside. Another version said he drugged her then left her in the house to burn. However, it is strange that the house stood till around 2000-2001 so either it did not fully burn down or someone rebuilt the home. But over the years her ghost had been sighted on the porch of the house some kids even said she threw an axe at one of them chasing them off the property. Sometimes she is seen wandering this cemetery other times walking out in front of the old Masonic Club. Perhaps her husband was a Mason prior to her death and she may have spent time at the hall with him during events.

Over the years I have done plenty of white lady investigations often the woman in white is associated with a young girl who may have died tragically or lost a loved one throwing themselves off a castle tower. Often the lady in white can be referred to as the Weeping Lady and some white ladies have been known to kill wandering children maybe even luring them to there deaths such as drowning them. I read that a young woman named Myrtle Rountree Whitesell could be this very ghost that everyone has been encountering over the years? Let me explain a little further you see Myrtle was hurt badly in an accident according to a newspaper they were on a picnic when her little brother picked up a piece of flammable guncotton from the nearby gunpowder plant causing it to ignite. The family was merely playing along the San Lorenzo River where a park including this cemetery was located and of course the powder keg mill which had buildings spread out for about a mile. The family did get burns but Myrtle took the most damage who had scorch marks on her face and back. Just a few years later she married her childhood crush and later died of tuberculosis only two months into the marriage at the age of 19. While her family was put to rest in Felton Cemetery Myrtle apparently was not so some folks think she is wandering the area still searching for her loved ones. Some folks think she wanders around the river where she had been burned others say she is wandering the cemetery trying to find headstones where her family is buried. Supposedly she is buried here but the gravestone has no name on it. I really cannot say for sure but where there is tragedy and death there is also ghost. Poor Myrtle lived a tragic life went from becoming scarred or disfigured all the way to dying before she ever had a chance to live her life of a horrible illness leaving behind the love of her life.

While some people say the white lady is very young others say she is a mean old lady with gray hair and wearing a long white dress or rob over her pale skin. Supposedly people have heard her screaming obscenities, slapping or scratch people. Sometimes she is seen walking the entire length of the cemetery other times sweeping the front porch. I read there is a house that borders this cemetery which was rumored to have been built on top of the graves of Chinese Railroad workers.  What we could be dealing with is stories of multiple ghosts which may haunt this cemetery and who knows maybe were also dealing with multiple white ladies since if appears that many of the women buried in Santa Cruz Memorial Park lived very tragic lives. We may never know then again certain days and times may hold more precedence then other time periods such as the anniversary of their death or a tragedy that changed their lives forever. Sometimes people even claimed that The White Lady can also been seen in Evergreen Cemetery nearby which I had a sighting of myself at the edge of the forest on a hill. Who is this ghostly lady? All we can do is speculate but where there is love, loss, life, death, history and tragedy also comes with ghosts of the past. Its possible that some of the tales are merely urban legend or scared kids that decided it would be cool to visit the cemetery at night. But with a century of these tales of the white lady I am willing to bet some sightings hold some truth.

Santa Cruz is a really awesome beach city but it also is a hotbed for the paranormal and over the years quite a few tales have surmounted. Tales range from UFOs, underground alien bases in Monterey Bay, Bigfoot up in the redwood forest and definitely many haunted sites just like the ones found in this cemetery. While their is plenty of history their is also misfortune such as when the Spaniards came here to missionize the Native Americans all the way the days when gangsters ran the streets in the prohibition era. In the 1970's Santa Cruz was the murder capital of the country containing more serial killers then any other city so some of the people found buried here were victims of murder. Alfred Hitchcock lived above town in the mountains where he modeled his creepy Bates Mansion in "Psycho" after the sinister looking McCray Hotel a Victorian wonder located on Santa Cruz's Beach Hill. If you guys ever watched The Lost Boys which btw is still one of my favorite movies it portrayed a nest of vampires who claimed the beaches boardwalk as their feeding grounds. Only in the movie they called it Santa Carla not Santa Cruz. With that being said Santa Cruz has plenty of ghosts stories, strange movies and authors who wrote many sinister pieces while living here. The cemetery is just the tip of the iceberg sure but it also contains many of tales of those who braved this city in its early stages of growth. Today all that remains of their accomplishments are the ghost that haunt the graves of this beautiful burial ground that the Independent Order Of Oddfellows formed in 1862.
