Some of you may know Santa Cruz Beach for its boardwalk which boast many historically fun rides while others may known it from the famous 1980's vampire movie and cult classic known as "The Lost Boys" where a gang of teenage vampires claim the boardwalk as their stomping grounds however in the movie it was called "Santa Carla". Which by the way is one of my favorite vampire movie classics of all time which was another big reason I had to party at the boardwalk. Little did I know growing up as a boy in Buffalo NY that I would one day partake in enjoying Santa Cruz Boardwalk and its pristine beach smoking bud and drinking ice cold beer. One of the main reasons I decided to spend a little time in Santa Cruz is to check out its many mysterious locations the beach and its boardwalk only serve as a focal point and hub for all things strange. But all within a few miles are some of the countries most unique sites such as the Henry Cowel Redwoods & Pacific Coast Train which takes those to and from Santa Cruz Beach to the Santa Cruz Mountains allowing others to journey in a rainforest full of giant ancient redwood trees.

Santa Cruz is really a hotbed for paranormal activity while you have bigfoot which is prevalent in the rainforest of the Santa Cruz Mountains their are numerous UFO sightings in Monterey Bay surrounding one of the deepest oceanic trenches in the world. Not to far away from the beach is the Court Of Mysteries where two brothers built a strange temple which aligned with our solar system to for tale the apocalypse and during WWII one of the brothers built an anti submarine stopping device which would interfere with communication when German or Japanese Subs were quietly submerged just off the coast of Santa Cruz. Then of course not far away you have two really well known ghost stories which are told surrounding The Pioneer Evergreen and Santa Cruz Memorial Park Cemeteries. One of those stories is about the ghost of a young woman all dressed in white. Then you have The Mystery Spot which is simply an optical illusion yet it also boasts some strange facts.

While their is so much mystery and strangeness surrounding this beach side town Master of Horror Alfred Hitchcock also had ties to the area. He actually had a ranch in the Mountains above town where he had modeled Bates Mansion and Motel in Psycho after the local McCray Hotel a Victorian mansion on Santa Cruz's Beach Hill.  One must wonder about how many natives were killed when the Spanish had arrived due to disease being spread nearly wiping out various tribes who fished for thousands of years on this beach. Lets not forget that in the 1970's Santa Cruz was known as the murder capital of the country and had quite a few serial killers living here. One of them killed for boys in the redwood grove just a few miles away that were camping. Today life has calmed down enough that Santa Cruz is a tourist destination for those who want to surf, boat, swim, explore, hike and fish. But over the years it also had developed a very colorful history one filled with legends of Sea Monsters, Murder, Visitors from other worlds and tragedy. No less Santa Cruz is a colorful beautiful little place sitting on the edge of Monterey Bay and I am so glad we can bring these types of locations to our viewers to enjoy.

The first group of inhabitants to set foot on this beach were the Ohlone Natives or Uypin who were one of the fifty semi nomadic tribe that hunted game and marine mammals in or around the Monterey Bay area. Often they ate shellfish, fish, edible roots and shoots, nuts, acorns, seeds and other plants. They grew medicinal plants and herbs often making their tools from local stones and shells. Jewelry was made with shellfish and they even weaved baskets. This would allow them to trade with other tribes who were more inland in California since the Ohlone primarly were a coastal tribe while other tribes made their lives higher up in the mountains nearby. The Natives often collected abalone shells which were very abundant in Santa Cruz especially in the 1940's in Santa Cruz. The Spanish often called the Ohlone People "Costanos" which is derived from the Spanish word costa meaning coast. This tribe spoke eight different dialects based on the area the tribe had lived which ranges from Monterey all the way up to the San Francisco Bay. Sadly they were culturally disrupted when the Spaniards had arrived due to mistreatment and many diseases brought from Europe they had no immunity too.  Many of the natives were sent to Spanish Missions to learn Christianity perhaps divided and separated from their tribe. The tribe that once came to this area around 500 A.D. was soon on the brink of losing their old ways and nearly driven to extinction.

The first European land exploration took place around 1602 just north of Santa Cruz led by Gaspar de Portola not far from Purissima California where the men were in search of
the port of Monterey overshooting it ending up at San Gregorio BeachWhile the men explored the area many actually died on this exploration as the area was overgrown and some of the water was not safe to drink. The party did decide to journey along the river when a Franciscan missionary known by the name of Juan Crespi noted in his diary that this river was named San Lorenzo for Saint Lawrence. As Father Crespi continued with his men downstream he noted that it took about five hundred steps up to the top of a hill crossing this running river overlooking Santa Cruz naming it "El Arroyo de la Santisima Cruz" which translates to "The Stream Of The Most Holy Cross".  It was at this location in 1791 that Father Fermin Lasuen continued the use of Crespi's name and declared this hill for being the site of La Misión de la Exaltación de la Santa Cruz (also known as Mission Santa Cruz. It would be the twelfth mission to be founded in California and would serve to convert many of the Awaswas of Chatu-Mu and surrounding Ohlone Villages in hopes to convert them to Christians.

A short time later in 1797 Governor Diego de Borica by order of the Viceroy of New Spain had established the Villa de Branciforte a town named in honor of the Viceroy. This would be one of only three civilian towns established in California during Spanish Colonial Rule. In simple terms Santa Cruz was a town in the 1700's and the mission was only about a mile if that away so its civilians could attend mass. Very few folks know it but the City of Santa Cruz had the Villa De Branciforte annexed in 1905 and revoked its civic status. But nearly a century this Spanish town thrived right off the coast meanwhile many Ohlone were absorbed into the church while some were laborers others were servants and were forced into slavery. By then most were wiped out due to catching diseases from the Spanish and the tribes no longer had villages in the Santa Cruz area.

In the 1820's Mexico became independent which means they also had control of nearly all of California. The government did try to rename the community that had grown all around the Mission to Pueblo de Figueroa a former governor but the name never stuck and this area continued to keep its name by the Spanish "Santa Cruz". Most of Santa Cruz in the 1820's was just farming and grazing lands one ranch extended from the San Lorenzo River north along the coast near today's county border. Those ranches would be eventually broken up into smaller land grants by several different governors between 1834 and 1845. The ranches were imperative in the fact that cattle, sheep and other livestock could be grazed on the land which would supply dairy, meat and crops to the people of Santa Cruz before California became a state and was free of Mexican control. As a matter in fact when immigrants began to arrive here in the 1840's when overland routes like the California Trail were opened it led to the Mexican - American War because after secularization most of California's lands were divided into private lands and many of them were owned by pioneers who came to California seeking new lives. After 1848 Mexico ceded the territory of California to the U.S and Alta California was the first portion of the territory to become a state in 1850. Santa Cruz County was established that same year and Santa Cruz was incorporated as a town in 1866 or should I say today a bustling port city.

By this time there were very few Ohlone Tribal People left as a matter in fact many of the Franciscan Missions were secularized around this time period of 1834. The Holy Cross Mission in Santa Cruz suffered when the adobe buildings begin to fall apart due to the heavy storms that came through the area year after year. The Chapel tower fell in 1840 and an entire wall collapsed in the 1857 Fort Telon earthquake. Thus in 1858 a newer more modern church was built next door to the remaining rear portion of the chapel and that remainder was demolished in 1889 when today's Holy Cross Church was built on that site and is a gothic marvel. The view from the top of the hill of the Santa Cruz area is quite amazing and that view has never changed not when the Ohlone hunted game on it or the first explorers came here to build a mission which later became a settlement right on the pristine sands of Monterey Bay. I made sure that I had visited the Mission because in the 1700's it was about all that stood in the region overshadowing the ocean and led to the development of the Santa Cruz you see today. Sadly the Ohlone had nowhere to go because when lands became secularized they were often given to friends and relatives of the Alta California government and some were given to foreigners who had married into the Californio families. Sadly the language, culture and traditions have disappeared the tribe was said to be under a 1000 and today while some ancestors do remain much has been lost due to the Spaniards reign.

Santa Cruz is a translation for Holy Cross which still stands proud today and when 1866 rolled around religion became less of a focus as early industry focused on lumber, gunpowder, leather, lime and agriculture in the region. It would not become a beach resort community till the later 1800's. As a matter in fact in 1865 John Leibrandt opened up a public bathhouse near the mouth of the San Lorenzo River. Most folks that came up to Santa Cruz in the 1800's came here alone just to visit all the different bathhouses which touted that bathing in salt water that this was a form of natural medicine. The 1800's was a time of growth restaurants, curio shops, photo stands and many other businesses begin to open up. Near the end of the 1800's Fred W. Swanton had laid out the plans for a casino and a boardwalk calling it the Coney Island Of The West. The family operated Santa Cruz Boardwalk has been entertaining tourist and residents of Santa Cruz since 1907 and is one of the last of the classic seaside amusement parks in the United States. It is considered to be one of the best seaside amusement parks in the world and I had the honor myself of enjoying it with my family as well. Over the years quite a few people have died on rides found at the Boardwalk thus their is always that theory that the amusement park could be even haunted.

Santa Cruz is truly the biggest city in the county I mean by 1847 you had the first Protestant Church, Blacksmith foundry, Wharf and Post Office. We can thank Ellhu Anthony who came to Santa Cruz that year. With that being said Anthony developed the first commercial block downtown Santa Cruz with his foundry being in the center of it all. Anthony along with his partner Frederic A. Hihn built the first private waterworks network in the city to serve the local community. Railroad lines would not reach Santa Cruz till 1876 and when the 1881 Santa Cruz Railroad was established it brought an influx of skilled workers to the area and merchants. Many of the men that came here worked up at the Lime Mill located within the Henry Cowell Redwoods Grove while others were stationed at sawmills cutting down massive trees located above town in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

During the Civil War a Gun Powder Mill was built right on the San Lorenzo River using charcoal and powder kegs manufactured from local forest. Later that mill produced smokeless powered used by the US Army in the Krag-Jergensen rifles and guns of the US Navy. Some of the blasting powder was often sold to mine owners to be used in mining operations. Sadly the mill was heavily damaged by a series of explosions on a warm April night in 1898 nearly burning down the entire city due to flaming debris being blasted across Mission Hill. Back then before they closed in 1914 nearly 300 local men worked here. I just want our viewers to understand that Santa Cruz is very rich in history and where their is history their are also ghosts. Over the years tragedy has hit the area time and time again whether it was fires, serial killers taking the lives of innocents, tsunamis, earthquakes, disease or some other tragic accident over the years many people came to Santa Cruz and simply never left it. While today life has slowed down a little we must never forget the historical tidbits which led to Santa Cruz being the great city it is today. But no great city starts great it was those who made history here who had made sacrifices and contributed to the cities growth making it what it is today.

Just south of the Boardwalk you can visit a place on foot known as Natural Bridges State Beach which at the time was used for cattle ranching by the citizens of Mexico. Later on it was a dairy farm, Brussels sprouts farm, hotel, housing area for local mill workers of the Antonelli Mill Pond, a South Seas movie set and even a failed sub division community. The state of California purchased Natural Bridges in 1933 and by 1954 their were many facilities constructed here. It use to be somewhat wilderness when you visited the park in the 1970's until many locals begin to build houses and commercial property surrounding this state park. The park may just be the largest over wintering Monarch Butterfly site in the country before they make there 1,500 mile journey across the west. If you visit the park between October till about February you will see them roosting on the preserve and along trails found a short distance from National Arches Beach.

The park was named after its three wave and wind carved sea arches. The natural bridges were formed as powerful waves eroded the mudstone deepening a depression in the cliff until natural caves were formed. Sadly today only one remains as in the early 1900's one arch collapsed and the inner arch was destroyed during a storm in 1980 leaving only one behind. If you visit the tidal pools and cave in the park it resides directly below the Seymore Marine Center which also houses NOAA aka National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration. More then often visitors can watch the whales out in the bay from this state park or even above on the cliffs behind the Seymour Marine Exploration Center.

In 1925 a strange sea creature washed up on Natural Arches Beach which is why I decided to provide our viewers with pictures and video of the area so they could envision the discovery. The creature was said to be anywhere from 35' to 50' in length. It was said to have a duck billed head, slender neck and a body that tapers off with fin like appendages. Some folks said that the creature had what appeared to be elephant legs with ivory toenails at the ends of them. Some of the locals including a local photographer thought the creature to be that of a Plesiosaurus which was said to have died out 65 million years ago. A naturalist named E. L. Wallace stated the same thing after examining the beach carcass. Wallace said the creature had no teeth, weak bones and was probably a plant eater that dwelled in a swamp. He always felt this creature was frozen in an iceberg or glacier that broke away from the arctic till it eventually ended up on the beach thawed and decomposing.

After further testing it was revealed that this was more then likely a Northern Pacific Beaked Whale aka Beradius Bairdi which are very rare and unknown outside the British Columbian Seawaters. Today people still debate exactly what this was not everyone agrees with the scientific analysis done back in the 1920's.  With that being said the sea monster of 1925 is still very well talked about today. Years later many locals also experienced a wave of sea monster sightings just off the Santa Cruz Beach in the 1940's. Being that Monterey Bay is one of the deepest in the world its hard to know what undiscovered creatures lurk in the depths below but sightings of many strange things still persist today including strange glowing and flickering objects often seen at night. Which is why I love hiking along this short stretch of shoreline because over the years its a focal point for those seeing things they cannot explain. Not just unexplained but very fascinating aquatic life such as the massive Blue Whale skeleton that washed up not to far from the Seymour Marine Center which today the massive skeleton can be seen at the entrance of this educational facility. I truly wish that they existed when the 1925 sea monsters washed up at Natural Arches perhaps they would have drawn an entirely different conclusion as to what really washed up on Santa Cruz's shoreline. Throughout the 1940's all the way up till around today sightings of a similar creature called BoBo have surfaced particularly around the wharf where I enjoyed a wonderful seafood dinner during my first adventure up in Santa Cruz.

Santa Cruz is a fun place but it also has a dark history and the kings of this beach have changed times many hands including even gangsters. While this is a bustling city still so very little is known about the bay which contains one of the deepest trenches and canyons in the oceanic world. The area offers so much to the explorer ranging from redwood groves to haunting cemeteries and jagged cliffs where ships have met their demise. It is a place of paradise, love and loss but also legendary sea monsters, UFOs and even Bigfoot which roams the mountains which backdrop the city and the ocean below. We may never have all the answers to this areas dark history nor the mystery but you have to wonder which this very beach is the focal point for life, death and the unknown for the past three hundred years. So next time you decide you want to brave Santa Cruz just remember there might be a sea monster lurking in the depths or little green men living in a biosphere 11,800' below the surface or you might be enjoying an amusement park ride someone had tragically died on. I also highly recommend you visit the Seymour Marine Exploration Center and the Santa Cruz Discovery Museum. I did not visit Santa Cruz for the surf but rather I wanted to visit here so I could experience all this bay has to offer whether that was a haunted cemetery or merely standing on the same beach a sea monster was found. Their truly is no place like Santa Cruz in the world I LOVE IT here and were so excited to share a small part of our journeys to one of the most colorful coastal towns in all of California.
