Just north of the beautiful ocean side city of Santa Cruz are the Santa Cruz Mountains and perhaps what this range is more famous for is its 40 acre grove of old growth Pacific Coast Redwood Trees.  With that being said among them you can also see the Capritaurus Bigfoot Museum, Mystery Spot and explore the historical town of Felton nestled in the hills of the Fall Creek Forest.  People come from all over the world just to visiting the nearly 5000 acre forest just outside of Santa Cruz to camp, swim, horseback ride, picnic, fish and enjoy the beauty these monolithic trees offer. The same trees that John C. Fremont seen after being one of the first explorers to have crossed the Sierra Nevada Mountains and President Theodore Roosevelt was inspired by. The tallest tree found in the grove reaches a height of 277' tall and 16' wide with an age estimate of around 1,500 years old. Supposedly there is a second grove I did not see it but its in a river canyon that contains remnants of a lime processing mill. While these redwoods growing here are ancient and have been around for over a 1000 years it is only one of so very few big tree groves located in California that are being preserved or left standing. Other groves like Big Trees ParkPurissima Redwoods Preserve, Kings Canyon, Muir Beach & Grove and Placer Big Trees Grove in the Tahoe National Forest.

The first men to have ever laid eyes on this ancient grove were the Sayante tribe a subgroup of the Ohlone Indian Culture before even the Spanish had arrived. They thrived off the San Lorenzo River fishing for steelhead and salmon. They would trade the fish for acorns, obsidian and other resources. I am sure the Indians also hunted here as black tailed deer, coyotes and bobcats were also prevalent. Its quite possible some natives may have even lived inside some of these trees or smoked their fish in them as some giant redwoods were hollowed out. At one time these trees covered most of the west and plant eating dinosaurs probably vegged out on them. Today though many of the groves are long gone especially when the first white European settlers came to the region they would cut these trees down to be used for lumber. They really never realized the value of these trees as a matter in fact some of them could have been almost 3 thousand years in age and were simply cut down without thinking twice. More then likely many men did not realize the value in these trees other then it was a massive source of wood for building houses throughout California for many of the local towns that stand today. Many of the local natives who lived off this land were reduced in numbers quickly when the Europeans arrived especially the Spanish when they built Mission Of The Holy Cross on a hill which could be seen even from this area. Legend has it the last Zayante Tribal member lived in this redwood grove and when she died someone buried her in it but the gravesite has been lost. But imagine how awful and lonely it had to be to know your the last of your tribe living out your days alone in this forest that eventually many lumber man would try to cut down. Many Padres had the natives cutting down these groves so they could explort the redwood lumber for missions up the coastline.

The Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park is located on several former Mexican Land Grants known as Rancho Zayante, Rancho Carbonera and Rancho Rincon. When California became a state it was no longer under Mexican nor Spanish rule though the pioneers introduced logging to the region. tanoak-bark harvesting, lime manufacturing and gold mining. As a matter in fact there is a lime mill in the other grove located in Fall Creek I did not make it there but will consider a second adventure here so I can explore it and see more of the massive redwoods which can be found here.  It was not until 1867 a man by the name of Joseph Warren Welch Sr. purchased 350 acres of the land area. This land included the grove of redwoods you see in the photos below but most of the land beyond it had been bare if not logged. He actually promoted the grove of uncut giants calling it Welches Big Trees Grove and soon tourist began to pour on in.

Unfortunately Welch passed away in 1876 leaving behind his trees and widow Anna Isabella whom in turn leased the land to an entrepreeneur J.M. Hooper who ran a resort with a small hotel and dance floor right near the Fremont Tree. I have a photo of the Fremont Tree below but also you can see in the team stills some of us taken with it and how you know its the Fremont tree is that its hollowed out. Explorer John C. Fremont regularly camped inside this trees fire-hollowed out base when he and Kit Carson visited Isaac Graham in 1846. Other historical figures who visited the tree were Andrew Carnegie, Presidents Benjamin Harrison and Theodore Roosevelt. When Fremont one day returned to the grove in 1888 as an older man he reported to have said "Its a good story; let it stand." in regards to stories passed down about how Kit Carson and Fremont camped inside the trees hollowed out base.  Not to long after in 1900 a man by the name of Andrew P. Hill photographed one of the giant redwood trees in Welches Grove when a proprietor at the time demanded the negatives and objected to them be photographed. Hill refused to hand them over stating that this grove should be a public park for everyone to enjoy. He turned over his photos and the incident to a journalist named Josephine Clifford McCrackin who followed up with a letter to the Santa Cruz Sentinel urging California's to "Save the redwoods".

This movement led to the creation of a nearby Redwood Park in 1902 now called Big Casin Redwoods State Park which the Sempervirens Club was founded. The Big Trees Grove resort operated here for about 30 years. William T. Jeter with the help of his wife Jennie Bliss Jeter and his friend Jeseph Welch Jr. son of Joseph Warren Welch Sr. worked tediously to ensure that in 1930 the Big Trees Park would be formed. As a matter in fact a tree would be named after Jeter by local citizens. It was great that Jeter had gotten to see his dream come true but shortly after the grove became a park he did pass away. For about twenty years after the park was managed by Santa Cruz County then became part of a new state park in 1954 when Samuel Harry Cowell donated 1,600 acres adjoining acres on the condition that the combined park be named after his father Henry.  The Cowell Family Foundation deeded the Fall Creek Unit to the state in 1972. Since then the Save The Redwoods League helped to add another 800 acres to the park bring it close to nearly 5000 acres in size just a quarter mile west of the town of Felton.

Some of the park included Ben Lomond Mountain where a fault runs along the base of it exposing huge amounts of limestone. The limestone was formed by pressure that crystallized layers of tiny sea creatures fossilized remains. The limestone was mined then heated up in kilns to be used in mortar and plaster. At one time 80 percent of the countries lime came from Santa Cruz County. The limestone would be quarried along Fall Creek then heated up so it could be converted in a usable material. Sadly many of the redwood trees were cut down and burned to keep the kilns operational. Sadly many trees were lost until these trees dwindled and raw limestone was being exhausted. With so many concerns being brought forward by journalist and folks like Welch and Jeter lime processed ended here and by 1919 the Fall Creek Kilns have ceased to burn the very trees that so many fought to save. Sadly if something would have been done earlier many of these trees would have been standing so with that being said only two groves stand in the state park one of them being about 40 acres in size. But if you hike in the state park you can see the kiln and quarry sites but you will also notice no redwoods growing near them because they were all cut down to heat the kilns so that the limestone could be processed.

Not to far away from the redwood grove a man by the name of Isaac Graham had settled here in the 1830's in which a small settlement had grown often called by the Mexican Authorities as "Roaring Camp". By 1842 Graham had established the first saw mill west of the Mississippi sparing the nearby Big Tree Grove. With that being said 25 years later these were the first redwoods protected from logging. Unfortunately the logging town no longer exist the Roaring Camp that you see in our photos is a re-creation of what the camp may have looked like. While the camp is long gone because of its existence this led to the town of Felton developing and it may have also been attributed to the areas first railroad "The Santa Cruz & Felton" which carried tourist to the redwood grove in 1875. This heritage railroad carried thousands of folks in the later 1800s via steam engine through this Redwood Forest and in the 1920s era they ran six miles to the south dropping its passengers off at the boardwalk of Santa Cruz Beach. Thus how its name came to be called the Santa Cruz Big Trees and Pacific Railroad since 1875. In 2013 the Roaring Camp & Big Trees Narrow Gauge Railroad celebrated its Golden Anniversary of 50 years which is is a newer line carrying passengers just about everyday except on Christmas which gives tourist a ride through Fall Creek. Also just another historical fact when Isaac Graham had passed away he was buried in Santa Cruz Evergreen Cemetery where his grave still stands today.

Roaring Camps Founder F. Norman Clark was the man responsible for preserving the railroad and remnants of roaring camp. Unfortunately Norman Clark passed away from Pneumonia in 1985 but due to his hard work Clark was able to preserve these steam engines of the 1800's era and also have them operate on his narrow gauge Roaring Camp Railroad. His wife Georgiana is the Vice President of Operations and was elected the chief executive officer by the board and continues as President of the company. Today Melani Clark daughter of F. Norman Clark and his wife serve as the companies CEO preserving Roaring Camps historical relics including its old steam engines continuing Clarks dream. I did not have a opportunity to take the railroad through the grove or to downtown Santa Cruz but if you journey via car you will see the trains crossing over trestles and slowly traversing the forest. Their is just something special about seeing old luxury train cars journeying in the woods passing by you its almost as if your stepping back into time.

One can imagine that passengers must get excitement just like they did back in the 1800's when the board the train traveling through the grove of redwoods departing the Santa Cruz Mountains. Then the train traverses along the scenic San Lorenzo River Gorge crossing a 1909 steel truss bridge and through an 1875 tunnel before arrive in Santa Cruz at the boardwalk. This railroad may just be one of the oldest and most historic railroads in California as it at one time carried lumber, picnickers, tourist and supplies through Big Trees and Santa Cruz. At one time the steam locomotives were used to haul giant redwood logs from the mountains and today the steam engines that traverse the line are some of the oldest and most well preserved narrow-gauge steam engines in the country. Speaking also of preservation the grove is home to the Banana Slugs which are seen slowly crossing various trails found in Fall Creek so be careful where you walk because they are quite slimy. With that being said history is not the only thing that is being preserved in this park its trees, wildlife, historical remnants, lime kilns, trains and even some sites in and around Felton California.

While this addition may not so much be about the paranormal or the strange it is truely about preservation and history. This is a very relevant site as a whole in the U.S. especially on the west coast since it was the location of one of the first saw mills and has some of the oldest well preserved Pacific Coast Redwoods in the state of California. I am an explorer, journeyer and my only purpose is to help preserve these sites through our own works so that other people can enjoy these places across the globe. While I have no doubt that Roaring Camp or the Grove is haunted I only hope that your children's children will have the same opportunity someday to experience the history, rainforest where these trees grow and perhaps even take a ride on one of California's most notable railroads in the U.S. I have done over the years plenty of journeying to last many lifetimes but their is no other special place in the world that compares to the Henry Cowell Redwoods and Roaring Camp Railroad. Its almost as if its a slice of paradise I could live in one of these trees in a loin cloth fishing all day, gathering, hunting and still be content! What a beautiful little gem and if its on our website it is because we want you to enjoy it the same way we did! While their is plenty of beauty to be found here the park does have a dark history as well such as on February 10th 1973 when a Herbert Mullin was wandering around the Henry Cowell Redwoods when he saw four teenage boys camping. He walked over to the boys engaging in a brief conversation claiming that he was a park ranger then without warning pulled a gun shooting all of them to death. Mullin's rampage took the lives of 13 poor souls around the Santa Cruz area including the four boys who were camping here today their restless ghosts probably haunt its trails. While not many folks are aware of this it just goes to show you that you are not safe anywhere even if you are merely camping and admiring nature thus I try to give our viewers both sides of the spectrum so they can form their own conclusions about the locations we journey at.

Also at the edge of the state park is the Capritaurus Bigfoot Discovery Museum in which a friend told me to visit sometime hence one of the main reasons for my trip. The collection includes exhibits of local history tied in with Bigfoot Sightings and actual evidence in the form of plaster and foot casts. They also host a detailed exhibit of the Patterson-Gimlin Film. You can also see books, native American information and even a nocturnal diorama featuring Bigfoot. The Santa Cruz Mountains have a long standing history of Bigfoot sightings and strangeness since in a sense they are almost jungle like due to the heavy amount of precipitation they receive due to the rains that come in off the Pacific Ocean. Please remember to donate since the museum is free as I made a considerable donation and would have donated much more if the curator would have acknowledged us and not ignored me the entire time despite me making multiple attempts to introduce myself being a world renowned cryptozoologist and all. No less this special addition on our site offers our viewers a little bit of everything such as nature, history, ancient trees, trains, historical remnants and even bigfoot which we hope you will come to enjoy while browsing our pages! I do want to apologize ahead of time if our photography was not that great but prior to this adventure my camera took allot of damage up in the cursed ghost town of Purissima California so my calibration was off sorry. However, one day we will return here again so we can visit the nearby Mystery Spot and check out the other Redwood Grove and lime kilns so state tuned.

Felton, California

Among geared locomotives, three companies (Shay, Heisler and Climax) are widely credited with dominating the logging and industrial marketplace. Shay locomotives were designed in 1872 particularly for Western U.S. logging operations.

Roaring Camp Railroads owns several Shay locomotives, a Heisler, Climax, and five diesel engines. Not all are operational as some are undergoing renovation and extensive refurbishing. On any given day, one might see one or more of the following steam locomotives transporting visitors deep into the heart of the breathtaking Santa Cruz Mountains.

Dixiana Shay

The Dixiana, Roaring Camp Engine #1, is one of three engines designated a National Mechanical Engineering Historical Landmark.

The Dixiana has an historic and varied past. The "Dixie," as she is affectionately called, was built by Lima Locomotive Works, Shop No. 2593, on October 12, 1912. She served on six different short line railroads before coming west to California. Although she saw service on the famous Smokey Mountain Railroad in Tennessee, it was a little narrow-gauge mining railroad (now abandoned) in Dixiana, Virginia, that gave her the name "Dixiana."

A two-truck engine, the Dixie weighs 42 tons with a tractive effort of 17,330 lbs. and has 29 ½" drivers. Three 10 x 12 inch cylinders can maintain 180 pounds working pressure.

The beloved Dixie was dubbed Roaring Camp Engine #1 because it was the first locomotive acquired by founder, F. Norman Clark, who inaugurated steam train service from Roaring Camp on April 6,1963.

Tuolumne Heisler

Named "Tuolumne," Roaring Camp's Heisler Engine No. 2 was ordered by the Hetch Hetchy & Yosemite Valleys Railroad in 1899 to operate at the West Side Flume & Lumber Company Sawmill near Tuolumne City, California.

When she was saved from the scrap heap and purchased in 1962 by Roaring Camp & Big Trees for $7,000, the engine was the last operating steam locomotive of the Old West Side Lumber Company. It holds the distinction of being the last steam engine in commercial lumber service at Tuolumne.

Built by Stearns Manufacturing Company in Erie, Pennsylvania, the Tuolumne was designed by Charles L. Heisler. The Heisler locomotive was favored by lumbermen for its geared drive, which allowed for dependable operation up steep grades and tightly turning mountain tracks, even with heavy loads.

This two-truck Heisler engine weighs 37 tons, has a tractive effort of 14,000 lbs., has 36-inch diameter drivers, and can maintain a steam pressure of 200 pounds with its cylinders that measure 10 by 15 inches.

Sonora Shay

The Sonora Engine #7 is a three-truck, 60-ton Shay engine built in 1911 by Lima Locomotive Works, factory number 2465. The West Side Lumber Company purchased the engine from the Butte & Plumas Railroad, where it was engine #4, and renumbered it #7. After long years of service, it was retired and stood in a county park in Sonora. It was refurbished to operate in 1977 as engine #7 for the West Side & Cherry Valley Railway, part of Quality Resorts of America Inc. Purchased by Roaring Camp in 1985, the engine was retained as #7 and nicknamed "Sonora," in honor of its gloried past.

The "Sonora" is one of only 83 Shays left in North America, and one of the few fully operational Shay engines in existence today.

Kahuku Baldwin

Roaring Camp Railroads' No. 3 engine, the Kahuku Baldwin, has a rich and colorful history dating back to its origins at the famous Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was ordered in 1890 by the newly formed Kahuku Plantation Company on the island of Oahu to carry sugar cane from the fields to the mill at Kahuku. Upon completion of its construction, the 12-ton narrow-gauge steam locomotive was transported via sailing ship 14,000 miles around Cape Horn to her new home in Hawaii.

From 1890 until 1947, the tiny 0-4-2 saddle tank locomotive chugged busily between the tropical peaks of the Koolau Mountains and the crystal blue waters of the Hawaiian seas.

During her lifetime of service, the little steamer served under four flags: the Monarchies of King David Kalakaua and his successor, Queen Liliuokalani, the Republic of Hawaii and, ultimately, the United States Territory of Hawaii.

In 1947, the Kahuku Baldwin was retired and sold for display to the Sutro Museum at the Cliff House in San Francisco. Once again she was loaded aboard a ship bound for the city by the bay where she was placed on display for nearly two decades.

In 1966, F. Norman Clark, President of the Roaring Camp & Big Trees Narrow-Gauge Railroad at Felton, Santa Cruz County, California, learned that the Sutro Museum was soon to be dismantled and the Kahuku was for sale. A quick trip to San Francisco revealed that the 76-year old steam locomotive was in good running order. The little engine was loaded aboard a heavy equipment truck and brought to her new home at Felton to become locomotive #3 on RC&BTNGRR's scenic passenger train route through the redwoods of Santa Cruz County.

In 1968, a demand for larger steam locomotives to handle the booming passenger business of the RC&BTNGRR's famous 8% grades (the steepest in western America) caused the little "Kahuku Baldwin" to be retired to standby duty. Today this historic locomotive is lovingly maintained and is occasionally enlisted to shuttle guests from an outer parking lot to the town of Roaring Camp during special events with rare excursions to Bear Mountain.
