| As most of our viewers are aware time to time
I love visiting roadside attractions but also locations that may appear
to be somewhat fortean or even strange. While I was on the road
traveling up to Monterey Bay in Santa Cruz I found myself standing at
the gate of prophecy at The Court Of Mysteries. The Court Of Mysteries
was built by Kenneth Claire and Raymond Kitchen in the late hours of
the night only illuminated by a small lantern perhaps the moon as well.
Raymond was a brick mason while his brother Kenneth was a master stone
mason which made the brothers skilled tradesman thus the Court Of
Mysteries was a cryptic brick building modeled similar to that of
Hindi Temple covered in Five-pointed stars and arcane
patterns. Nobody knows why the brothers built this temple in the late
hours of the night perhaps they did not want to deal with inspectors
and getting building permits. While others theorized that maybe the
light of the moon forges a connection to other planes of existence or
beyond space and time within our universe. The entire structure was
built with alignment of celestial bodies such as for example the lunar
cycle. Kitchen always believed in harnessing energy from the moon the same way perhaps farmers follow it when planting crops or in other cultures living by the sea to detect tides. If you pay very close attention the gate which today has a chain across it in our photos has a large triangular stone symbol which features celestial objects such as the moon and stars. You can see a close up of the tablet if you visit our investigation report so you can see exactly what I am talking about. Inside the temple there was a matching pyramid plaque as well over the fireplace but someone apparently smashed it when The Court Of Mysteries sat abandoned for so many years. Kitchen believed that when the axis points of the moon and the stars from the two plaques came into celestial alignment it would sign the apocalypse followed by an age of peace. Of course if the apocalypse occurred their would be peace because mankind would probably cease to exist thus our planet would be left to heal and metamorphically evolve as it has always done for millions of years. The Kitchen brothers came from a large family and lived in Five Points Pennsylvania in 1894. As a matter in fact in total their were eleven siblings in all as a matter in fact William Kitchen had eleven children with his first wife Hannah and eleven more Sarah Jane with his second spouse. The family would eventually move out to Kansas in the early 1900's perhaps the family lived out on a farm. Kenneth and one of this brothers Grover in Kansas they applied for their very first patent which was for an improved incubator in 1919. By 1923 the brothers ended up moving to Sonoma California where they applied for a second patient for their Egg Turning Means for Incubators and that same year they left Sonoma to live out in Santa Cruz. While in Santa Cruz they applied for a third patient for Molding Form For Cement Bricks. Grover and Kenneth were really close always working together but also many of the Kitchens were involved in various trades so by 1929 their brother Raymond joined Kenneth in Santa Cruz. In 1934 Raymond and Kitchen purchased lots on Fair Avenue not to far from Santa Cruz Beach & Natural Bridges State Park. The brothers had been evicted so they needed somewhere they could go. Kenneths property was rather large actually it had a field where he could raise goats and build a barn on the property. Locally Kenneth sold goat milk to some of the public and behind his bar he constructed a "Scriptorium" to keep his collection of books on Eastern Mysticism and store some of his architectural treasures. Some say Kenneth constructured The Court Of Mysteries to win the heart of a woman who was a daughter of a local business owner but some say she turned him down. Others say that Kenneth simply just had a fascinationg with Eastern Mysticism that he had been introduced to while serving the US Military in WWI in Turkey where he learned to be a mason. When the Scriptorium was built so was the home that you see in these photos as a matter in fact both Raymond and Kenneth had often gotten into fist fights. I am sure they both had their differences in how the Court should built. While raising goats the home would be build late at night as a matter in fact all the bricks used in building the home were hauled in the back of a car. The Court Of Mysteries was designed to resemble a Yogi Temple. The windows on the property once were able to absorb moonlight and align with the temples fireplace. The property also had a well house which looks like a crypto and was surrounded by four minarets which someone had smashed with a sledge hammer. As a matter in fact someone smashed all the windows out and really did a number on this property back in the 90's. Their use to be these totem poles covered in over 400 abalone sea shells and many of the shells within the home were decorated with astrological symbols all today gone due to vandalism. When Kitchen lived in this Hindu Yogi Temple he was said to have Persian Rugs and an extensive library filled with books on Eastern Philosophy inside. However, their was very few furnishings inside and even today nobody really knows what the purpose was for The Court Of Mysteries construction other then Kenneth was passionate about Hindi Culture and perhaps showed is love for it by putting his artisan skills to use. Kitchen never called this temple The Court Of Mysteries rather just Unit 1 of a Yogi Temple which was written on a building permit he applied for in 1946. Locals call this place also The Red Palace, Yogi Temple and even The Watts Towers Of Santa Cruz. Real work did not begin till the Kitchen Brothers constructed a fence in 1935 with reinforced cast cement with brick support columns capped with abalone shell mosaic tops. The Gate Of Prophecy then could be built which contained four brick towers with two shorter ones at either end of the low brick wall. At night the four towers were all illuminated and above the center of the gateway is an arch with a triangular plaque supported by two abalone mosaic wing like forms at its center. The plaque depicts four stars, a crescent moon at 12 o'clock and a sun symbol at 6 O'clock. Their is also an abalone golden spiral in the center of this circular motif. Nobody knows what it means but supposedly when this plaque lines up with the one found over the fireplaces mantle or chimney this would signify the end of the world is near. I guess you can say its fun to speculate and we may never now know because when this location was abandoned for so many years vagrants, vandals and druggies abused the property. While some feel the brothers felt empowered to construct the temple at night under the stars others said they were avoiding building permits. Perhaps the brothers could only find time at night since both of them were working men. While the brothers had gotten building permits in the mid 1940's the construction of the temple slowly begin in or around 1935. Those that lived in the area claimed that the brothers often used a Rolls Royce, Packard or even a Cadillac to transport bricks and stones to the property. The brothers were said to fire the bricks themselves up at Boulder Creek. The abalone sea shells which had decorated the entire property were required from a local processing plant in town. I must say if I owned a Rolls Royce the last thing I would want to do is throw stones and bricks into it. But one thing is evident and that was that money was no object in regards to the construction of this temple which they spared nothing but the best. Today abalone shells are endangered as a matter in fact much less abundant then they were when Kitchen was harvesting them for his temple. I own some abalone shells I have collected over the years which I plan on putting into a curio cabinet one day but back in the day they were often used on totems such as the ones found in Point Reyes Station California. Pay very close attention to the brick pump house located next to Kitchen's temple which enclosed the well found on the property. The pump house at one time had four illuminated minarets at each of the corners which were smashed by vandals in the 90's. Kenneth Kitchen used the pump house to create his "anti-submarine stopping device" when the U.S. entered WWII around 1939. Kitchen had always shown concerns about being able to detect German Subs and U-boats which often had cased the Pacific shoreline of California including Santa Cruz. With the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 many Japanese submarines were also following the Pacific Coastline as well of course they had the intent of sinking and attacking cargo ships to the United States and they did proceed to do so of December 18th and 24th of that year. Thus Kenneth created this secret device which consisted of a buried spoked railroad tie wheel in front of the property followed by the construction of two tall towers at the end of his large field out front. The towers today can still be seen today and although they seem to be part of the temple they did serve another use. One tower would receive radio signals from submarines and the other sent out signals to interfere with their communication. Kenneth could listen to communications and be on alert neighbors said he would water down his mattress at night so he could stay awake. The other part of his device was submerged in the well inside the pump house and most neighbors on the street thought the two brothers were spies as you are aware when you live in the burbs people are nosy and sometimes they talk. The fact remains that at least six individual were killed by Japanese Subs off the coast of Santa Cruz home to the famous boardwalk, The Mystery Spot, Santa's Village, Tree Circus, Henry Cowell Redwoods and Pacific Coast Train, Bigger Dipper Rollercoaster which I had taken my son on and many sites that still exist today all because of Kitchens device. Without who knows Santa Cruz may have gotten attacked and the results could have been devastating. I think what inspired Kitchen is that the sub, I-23 under the command of Captain Genichi Shibata ran across a Richmond Oil Tanker called Agwiworld commanded by Captain Frederick Goncalves. The sub stalked and attacked her about 20 miles off of Cypress Point in Monterey Bay. Although the ship was attacked it did make it to Santa Cruz without sinking despite the fact that the sub was quite faster but was outmaneuvered by Captain Goncalves giving up after it overheard the ships distress call to the U.S. Navy. It was so widely talked about that maybe Kitchen was inspired to do more after the incident nobody knows. Karma is a bitch sometimes so a short time after the I-23 sub left the Santa Cruz area heading to Palmyra Island and later on the Oahu coast of Hawaii where she sank where all 96 on board were lost. But by December of 1942 the subs had attacked a total of eight ships damaging two and sinking two while killing six in total. The Navy may have become aware of Kitchens device after they been experiencing some issues with their own submarines in the area. Neighbors claimed that the US. Navy paid a visit to Kenneth some people claim they shipped him off to Florida maybe to work on some of their more covert projects. Some even said the Navy broke into the pump house stealing Kitchens device. Kitchen vanished for awhile then came back to conduct more work on his Yogi temple which was topped off with a dome in 1946 after the war and until about the mid 1950's. Unfortunately Kitchen never completed the temple it was supposedly meant to be two stories and only the first story had been completed. Sadly nobody knows the intent of Kenneth Kitchens Temple and unfortunately he died with his secrets in 1960 at the Warren State Psychiatric Hospital in Warren Pennsylvania where his body would be donated to science. I myself have done some research at the hospital as a matter in fact it still is in use today in the little town of Warren which is known for its Civil War Sites, Haunted Houses, Indian Caves, Bigfoot Sightings, Lake Monsters and of course most of all the iconic haunted hospital which today in essence is a true fortress of its time. Its possible that Kitchen has a grave marker found at the Warren State Hospital Cemetery but I cannot say for sure. You see nobody knows why Kenneth left Santa Cruz in 1957 or where he even went as all traces came to dead ends. One must wonder why he chose to lay low or how he ended up in a mental institution. Did the government steal his scheme maybe put him into witness protection or offer him a job up in Pensacola Florida? Nobody really knows because after Kitchen's device and the WWII everything becomes less transparent on the life this man lived and nobody knows why! When Kitchen left his temple sat vacant many years and abandoned till the later 1960's prior to that a homeless man was care taking the property with the notion he could live there to help deter vandals and loiterers. Eventually the temple was sold a Greek Orthodox minister who converted it into the St. Elias Greek Orthodox Chapel and Shrine. The locals called it the "Unorthodox Chapel". Eventually the church became abandoned again for many years and by the 1990's it was considered a nuisance and was put on a list to be demolished. I guess the locals in the neighborhood were tired of the loiterers and vandals going here just to cause trouble. I read that the Loma Prieta earthquake that destroyed many buildings in downtown Santa Cruz had no structural effect on either of the Kitchen's structures on Fair Street this includes the Yogi Temple and his Raymond's House. Both brothers were masons so when they built their homes they built them to outlast any of the other structures found in the Santa Cruz area. Thanks to a group of neighbors along with a local architect they were able to save the temple from being demolished especially after the earthquake showed signs that the Court Of Mysteries was in fact a structurally sound building and home. Thus the 90's the temple was heavily vandalized until a caretaker was hired to live on the property in a trailer to watch over it with a price tag listed for 2.2 million dollars. Definitely not a drop in the bucket but it is earthquake proof and very unique more or less today a well visited roadside attraction even while I was there touring it. No less it sat abandoned for many years thus the windows were smashed and many of the abalone shells. Luckily in 2016 a short time prior to my visit the property was sold couple from San Francisco for $1.58 million. The new owners are wishing to restore the property and eventually open it for tours. I really hope they do because honestly I do not have any photos of the inside of the temple because it was boarded up and the couple is currently living here while restoring it as well so it is an ongoing project. The couple also wants to use the property to display there art and use it as a studio so I really hope it works out for them id love to see this place looking how it did when Kenneth Kitchen owned the property. While The Court Of Mysteries is in peril waiting restoration his brother Raymond lived on the same street also had a home which the locals called "Kitchen's Castle" a concrete block home with a grand fireplace that was said to be the largest in Santa Cruz in 1947. A owner stated the fireplace was so big he converted it into an office. Raymond built the fireplace because he was inspired by seeing a similar design in a postcard he had gotten from Indian. When he built his home he also constructed a complex water system under it that was part of a decorative pond. Much like his brother Raymond never completed their dream home and they ended up departing to a small town in 1949 in the Sacramento Valley. A carpenter eventually the homes third owner Walter J. Irby who was a carpenter completed the home in 1953 before selling it to a Dr. B.B. Stoller who owned a fertilizer manufacturing company sometime in the 1950's. Stoller then converted the home into an office adding other structures to the property operating it till about 1992 until 2012 when it was demolished. With that being said this is why I never found Raymond's home because it is long gone and new houses have been built in its place. Luckily, Kenneth Kitchen's Yogi temple did not receive the chopping block but is a reminder of what once was when these two strangely unique brothers came to the Santa Cruz area. People said that Raymond's Castle was a complex Gaudiesque building covered in abalone shells and decorative stone mosaics similar to The Court Of Mysteries. Today people often flood the streets to see Kitchen's temple at least what is left of it. At one time celestial symbols could be found everywhere and windows would align with them. The entire temple was a work of art but it also had a much deeper meaning. We may never know its secrets but today this site remains one of the more mysterious roadside attractions in the Santa Cruz area. Its hard to know what happened to Kenneth or why his brother Raymond moved out of the region around the same time. Nobody even knows why Kenneth did not continue to finish the second floor of his temple. With that being said we are only left so speculate and theorize about not only the temples mysteries but whatever happened to Kenneth Kitchen the man who invented his Anti-Sub stopping device and why he vanished for so many years. While I realize this is a very small addition on our website compared to many other cases I work everyone loves a good mystery and a piece of American history. The Kitchen's were a family of Masons just like any family they also died with some of their secrets and today The Court Of Mysteries sits near the world famous beach of Santa Cruz just awaiting new discoveries and leaving those left to speculate what was and could have been.
