It was the year around 1848 that the Mormons first discovered gold along the American River and perhaps did some gold mining along its bank where the ghost town of Salmon Falls exist today.  However, when they came here the Mormons did not stay very long therefore it would be two years later after the gold struck in Coloma that a town was established here in 1850. During the gold rush miners began following local streams and river in search of placer gold. One of the wealthiest gold rush towns in the region was Salmon Falls and its sister town just a couple miles away known as Mormon Island. Not to far from Sutters Fort gold was discovered in Coloma California when miners realized that gold was prevalent throughout this river canyon they journeyed to other regions nearby. Thus a dozen mining camps were born including many today that are underneath Folsom Lake and not to far away Placerville California aka Old Hangtown which is further upstream but were well known boom towns.

Once the post office arrived in 1851 it remained operable till 1912 of course it closed twice in 1875 and 1893. This was not a fly by night camp people lived along Sweetwater Creek and the converging of the American River for nearly a 100 years till the Folsom Dam Project came into play flooding the river to create more or less a large lake erasing much of this ghost town away in the 1950's. I heard that the town was underwater for nearly fifty years and in the past ten waters have been receding due to drought so what was the east end of the lake now the river once flows steadily again through here. However, in later 2015 and most of 2016 the drought is coming to an end thus submerging the town once again. The largest and most visible structure found within the town is the bridge which spans across the river built in 1883 their once existed another bridge in the towns beginnings perhaps it washed away or was dismantled since this bridge proved to be more efficient. I seen some photos before where the bridge was entirely underwater its truly a marvel of its time and so when you look at our photos of this ghost town you can clearly see that this landmark is visible from everywhere!

When the dam was constructed for Folsom Lake and the town site was flooded many graves were exhumed from the Salmon Falls Cemetery but not all were found. Therefore more then likely their is a good chance that many of the graves were not relocated and exhumed. The graves that were located were moved to the Mormon Island Relocation Cemetery a couple miles up the road which also is a haunted location we have done research at and has a fair share of its own ghost stories. When the camp started a hundred miners lived here some were prominent men who went on to become big wigs in other mining towns.

How the town had gotten its name was that at one time their use to be a raging waterfall on Sweetwater Creek and back in those times Salmon use to run. Therefore when pioneers seen hordes of Salmon jumping the falls therefore they called the town site Salmon Falls. Prior to it being called Salmon Falls the Mormons called it Higgins Point named after the first family who settled on this land in 1848. This was a large town back in the day actually one of the largest along the American River with a population of over 3000 people mostly prospectors. Many mines were established such as the Jayhawk, Green Springs, Pinchem Gut aka Pinchem Tight, New York House, McDowell Hill.  The town had a boarding house, platted streets, stores, sawmill, school house, saloons, blacksmith shop, hotels, planted trees, post office, a Chinatown, regions first dam, stage line and the first bridge that spanned the American River built here in 1853. The town was built on both sides of the river so it was necessary to have a way to cross the raging waters.

Before anyone white men came to the area these woods were home to the Nisenan tribe who migrated here often living in bark shelters during the summer months along the river. I read that the natives in the winter months would live in villages which tells me that certain times of year the tribe may have done allot of migrating for the sole purpose of hunting, trading and even traversing the higher sierras in the warmer months where it was much cooler. The villages had a ceremonial smoke house or some call it a sweat house or dance house more then likely and a variety of other structures also would have existed in the village. Village homes were much larger then your typical bark houses skins and bark would cover structures help up by poles. They had grass mats and skin rugs inside. The Nisenan were very civilized and they would have fished for Salmon where this ghost town was. As a matter in fact if you search hard enough supposedly their are some cupules or grinding rocks hidden in the ElDorado Hills surrounding the town site which is often a sign that a large village probably at one time existed here.

The Miwok Coastal Indians would also utilize the area but then generally visited the Nisenan to trade with one another. The Miwoks probably traded shell beads, oyster shells and other basket making materials. However the Nisenan may have traded acorns, berries and pine nuts which are prevalent in this region. When the pioneers came to the area they received land grants thus the Nisenan were forced to migrate from the area. Sadly the white man begin building up the area with very large cities there for when all towns were at their peak you had probably almost 10k that were mining along the river. This meant that food was becoming more scarce and diseases would start wiping out a majority of the tribe such as smallpox which would have been devastating.

Miners locally from Salmon Falls formed what is known as the Natoma Water Company then a 20 mile ditch would be constructed a short time later. The ditch redirected water for the miners to sift the ditch for placer gold.  This ditch begin at the location of today's new Salmon Fall Bridge spans and ran down to Granite City which today is known as the city of Folsom Lake. It cost about 175k's to construct the ditch and in 1912 the Natoma Company renovated the ditching by lining it with 13,000 ft of concrete. You can see a part of the Natoma Ditch on our Mormon Island additions on our website which has photos of a concrete lined ditch and not to far from Sweetwater Creek is also a small section of concrete tubing found further below on this page however most of lining is long gone. The government in 1953 the government bought most of the holdings where the ditch traversed then created Folsom Lake by damming off the American River.

The dam was complete in 1955 which is nearly 9 miles long but broken up in different areas thus when the lake was created many of these gold rush towns simply vanished overnight including Salmon Falls. You can see that the water at one time consumed the bridge as a matter in fact it came up to the tree line and none of the town was ever seen for decades. Downstream there is Lake Natoma that was also created so between Folsom and five hundred surfaced acres of Natoma their was enough water for power, irrigation, flood protection and household water for the thousands of residents who came to the Eldorado Hils. Sacramento was growing while some chose to live in the heart of the city others chose to live in the Eldorado Hills above it where Salmon Falls is situated. Their was also ranches in the area so the lake and ditch did proved there cattle with necessary water. Many crops were grown in the area such as grapes so irrigation was necessary. Areas where the ditch did not traverse were very dry therefore many ranchers would head up to the High Sierras during the warm times of year some examples of such ranches still exist today such as in Hope Valley, Meiss Meadows and Highland Lakes.

You could walk a couple miles and also hit other small towns west of Salmon Falls one of the largest was Mormon Island a large town that was the site of 150 Mormon Miners after a small battalion discovered gold here. Many miners came from the local fort but once word had gotten out many pioneers decided to try seeking gold along the river. This town had dry good stores, ranches, express office, school, four hotels, seven saloons, dairy farm, winery, cemeteries, merchandise stories, newspaper and so much more it was large. The first ball in Sacramento County was held there on Christmas Day of December 1849 you can bet that pioneers who may have lived up at Salmon Falls probably attended. You had one settlement one after another near Salmon Falls which included Red Banks, Negro Hill, Prairie City, Carrolton Bar, Natural Dam, Packwood, Beckholdt, Dotons Bar, McDowell's Hill, Chan Lin Din, Tweed, Condemned Bar and a few others. However, Mormon Island and Salmon Falls at the time were the largest camps out of them all. Problem is these towns were plagued at times with floods and sometimes even fires therefore most simply vanished from the history books.  Salmon Falls Peaked out in 1860 at about 3k while its sister town only 2,500 residents!

This is a fine ghost town you start off hiking in the Eldorado Hills and the outer edges of the Eldorado National Forest in the lower foothills of the sierras. You can follow Sweetwater Creek behind a gate and eventually it will come out at the river. This is where Salmon Falls is located and their is allot hidden in foliage if your willing to take the time to explore. But keep in mind very little exist but what does definitely is worth seeing such as some concrete steps, cellar, bridge, concrete slabs, metal pipes, trough, foundation, stones from miners cabins, pillars and an area where a bridge spanned the creek. More or less where the ghost town is the area was covered by a giant lake but when waters receded the lake faded and the river became very shallow at the time in 2015 making the dam obsolete. Therefore the town sits along the river or at the bottom of the canyon/ravine in a low lying area so its hard to see and allot harder to find when its underwater.

The area has grown quite considerably therefore many of the hills above the town site are full of communities, homes and condos. Back in the mid 1900's all the way up until the 1980's the area was rather desolate. The forest covering the hills was more dense and people were having a series of Bigfoot sightings for years. I believe that this creature use to come down from the sierras following the American River. Then it probably made its way above the Salmon Falls area to hunt, gather food and perhaps migrate to the area because the winters are much warmer then the barrage of old man winter the high sierras faces. Since then reports are dwindling to almost none this might be attributed to the encroachment of man who came to the area. I have no doubt that miners had Sasquatch sightings some miners who worked there way to Squaw Valley aka Olympic Valley logged in their diary personal encounters. More then likely some of those miners probably stopped in Salmon Falls before heading up to the high sierras to search for that gold.

I know one thing based on my research in this area along the river I have found at times high unusual EMF readings and most definitely EVP does get captured. Which tells me that even if the ghost towns or mining camps are gone its the land that is haunted. Their are allot of graves that were never relocating therefore when the lake was constructed it flooded everything and these people have been forever forgotten lost to history. None of us want to have a legacy we leave lost forever believe me when I say that so you would haunted the shores of this lake as well. These were big towns some lasted for decades therefore allot of energy exist on the land places where farms grew crops, rounded up cattle, people drank, mined, road stagecoaches into town and did everyday errands. People seen their last days on earth living in homes along the river the same one that brought wealth and allot of pure Placer Gold which led to wealth. Some of the same men who mined Salmon Falls eventually took that success to other boom towns such as Virginia City and even Bodie.

Today Salmon Falls is once again being consumed by the American River and even worst Folsom Lake thus history will once again vanish from time that a thriving town once existed along the shores of Sweetwater Creek and one of California's greatest rivers. I worked very hard to do a story on this location for our viewers so they could see a piece of wild western gold rush history that had been forgotten so many years. Their supposedly is an old water wheel not to far from the town site but I never found it so very little remains and once can hope this town will live on through our site allowing our viewers to use a little imagination as to what this town may have looked like at one time. Today the area has been consumed by nature but also encroachment of man the old bridge is only for pedestrians or cyclist but you can drive over the newer iron bridge which is a marvel worth seeing. But very few folks would ever be aware or even know that a true ghost town exist just below that bridge downstream but now some of you do!
