When cities began to grow in California it forced the state to make rash decisions building reservoirs, dams and man made lakes. I had always known that their were remnants of many old gold rush towns under Folsom Lake little did I ever realize that due to global warming and drought such underwater cities are becoming exposed as waters recede allowing us to bring you this special addition to our website. A similar ghost town that was recently exposed out near Lake Mead NV is St. Thomas so make sure you also check out our expedition there as well so that you can see the trend that is developing throughout parts of the country like with Mormon Islands lost settlement reemerging once again!

The sole purpose of working on this project was A. To further educate those on early gold rush American western history and B. Solely to preserve what little is left of these settlements which have been submerged for decades. Although it is illegal to treasure hunt it still continues to happen so consider our site one of the very few who actually takes a stand against it. I do wear a sheriffs star on hat and if I see you stealing from this town I will apprehend and arrest you so be warned. It is the relics of the past that give this lost gold rush town character without them you have nothing!

Mormon Island once a thriving mining community along the American River which splits into two forks the south and north forming today what is known as Folsom Lake. In March of 1848 men by the name of Wilford Hudson, W. Sidney and S. Willis were part of the Mormon battalion. They set out from Sutter's Fort which really was the only settlement that provided salvation to early explorers even the victims of the Donner Party at Donner Lake! The young Mormon men had set out to hunt deer to bring back to Sutter's Fort while stopping along the south fork of the American River they found gold sparkling in the sand.

When they told tales about their strange discovery upon returning to the fort it sparked a gold rush of about 150 Mormons and other mines that decided to check out the Mormons claims. They named this area Mormon Island even though it was more of a sand bar along the river one day it would be underwater and you could only access it via boat but not since the waters have receded here. The gold strike discovered here with the first major one since James W. Marshall's major discovery up in Coloma California.

By 1853 the population of the town had grown to more then 2,500 miners and permanent residents. The town had three dry-goods stores, five general merchandise stores, express office, many small shops, school, seven saloons and even four hotels. Their was also a dairy farm and a massive winery build as well in another nearby settlement. The first ball in Sacramento County was held here on Christmas day of December 25, 1849. A fire eventually would destroy the town in 1856 and after that nobody decided to rebuild it. Sure a few stragglers stayed behind all the way to the 1940's but for the most part what was once a boom town just became a sparse settlement. There were also many other smaller settlements in the area such as Salmon Falls, Red Banks, Negro Hill, Prairie City, Condemned Bar, Carrolton Bar, Natural Dam, Smith, Packwood, Beckholdt, Tweed, Chan Lin Din and Dotons Bar McDowell's Hill! Some of these mining communities were segregated operated by various ethnic backgrounds. One day all of them would either be flooded by the waters of Folsom Lake or roads would be built over where houses once stood.

In 1955 a dam was built which flooded all the sand bars making them into smaller islands entire mining communities were submerged. Sadly their were many cemeteries erected near each settlement so when work was done to relocate them not every grave was moved and in some cases names were loss in the process. This is my theory as to why these exposed ruins may be haunted by ghosts because the dearly departed may want to be found and perhaps even remembered. Back in the day the dead were often buried right along side of the settlements and those interments become lost over time. During our first historical preservation project we collected numerous EVP's and EMF Gauss readings. Their is no power lines near by so we theorized that some of the hits we picked up with our equipment may have been grave sites or parts of the town that had bustling activity. This town has a dark history it not only burned but so many of the graves were relocated while others were sadly missed when the dam project came to light.

From 1955 all the way to 2013 the major Mormon Island settlement has remained underwater as for some of us this was a once in a lifetime opportunity and we may never get another chance. Unfortunately due to drought and little snow run off in the higher sierras the water levels are dropping at an alarming rate. It is very possible that in the next few years their may not be a Folsom Lake anymore.

In 1965 just off Red Bluff a small plane carrying a family had crashed into the lake. The plane and three of the bodies were never found which means that the lake itself retains its secrets very well. I believe that the Sheriff's department is finally utilizing the receding waters as a way to search for the wreckage and recover the bodies. This lake really has a dark history considering the town burnt down, old cemeteries were flooded to make the lake then you also have a plane that crashed into the waters killing a young boy, two men including the pilot and a woman. It would appear that the dearly departed never seem to rest surrounding the dry lake beds. When you walk along the dry lake beds stumps line old wagon roads the same stumps that once were trees and cut down to be used for their timber. Many of the structures still standing are made of native stone. On some stumps and foundations it is very easy to see relics of the past such as broken glass or twisted fragments of metal that may have belonged to someone's bed springs. It is illegal to damage or disturb archaeological sites as well as remove items from a state park so if you happen to explore the banks of Folsom Lake please take this site with great respect like we have.

I believe that much more remains to be seen even though much of the settlement of Mormon Island remains exposed its rumored that under another 90' of water. It is hard to say what the future holds for Folsom Lake or how many old settlements will become exposed. I have done a very thorough job of compiling news articles, photos, history, black and white photos as well as videos to give our viewers a more in depth look into this historical gold rush town that once became submerged. It must had been a really sad site to see all these monolithic stone structures get submerged within minutes after the dam was complete and this region was flooded.

I also took a glance into the Bigfoot sightings that took place in the Eldorado Hills nearly 30 years ago and prior to that. It appeared that prior to Folsom Lake being formed allot of the surrounding area of this lake was very thick woods. Today the hills and some patches of woods exist but the area is now built up with condos, homes and plazas. But prior to the lake become an urban park for mountain bikers, hikers and gold rush town explorers its woods were abundant with Bigfoot tales. I believe that this creature would come down to the American River to catch Salmon and Deer. Then when it caught its bounty it would move right back up into the high sierras using the American River as a travel route. It is ashamed that it is mankind that is chasing this beautiful creature deeper into the wilderness and that at one time these forested hills provided shelter to Americas Great Ape!

I wanted to thank the other parties involved who worked with me to make this project come to light. Although we chase the unknown its also our job to preserve these locations so that our children's children can enjoy them the same way you are enjoying them on here. Its rather exciting to be able to bring our fans and viewers one of the earliest gold rush towns of the wild west. This is something that should be taught in every school across the country and we hope that the project really puts the dearly departed to rest along with enlightens our viewers who are seeing remnants of the past then been submerged for many decades now brought to light!
