Hope Valleys serves as a gateway to various trade routes that the Washoe Indians used for centuries. This area gives access to the Sierra high country in addition to the Pacific Crest Trail and Mokelumne Wilderness. The valley itself is very green full of lush meadows, creeks, ancient evergreens and snow covered peaks. One of those peaks found in the area is called the nipple check out our scenic photos to view it.

Nobody knows for certain but Kit Carson and John Fremont were the first white explorers who were said to have viewed Hope Valley. In 1844 they made a mid-winter trip across the sierras. Crossing into the valley was certainly less harsh then being higher up in the sierras where snow can get in access of over 15' maybe even more.

However it was soldiers of the Mormon Battalion returning from the Mexican War of 1846-1847 who called this place Hope Valley by 1848. Then came the emigrants to the region due to the Gold Rush. The valley had tall grass which was used to feed their cattle and horses for those taking the Emigrant Trail. The valley from this period on would be using for ranching all the way through the 1970's.

Eventually there was a plan to develop the valley however the good people of Alpine County lobbied against it to protect the land and its meadows. Also just for factual information Hope Valley has one of the largest meadows in the entire Sierras. There is so much to see and do here all the way from cross country skiing to snowmobiling. There is also fishing, hiking, camping and of course Bigfoot searching. I have read countless reports about Bigfoot activity within this valley. It doesn't surprise me after all the entire valley and its meadow are surrounded by some of the most massive peaks in this range.

In the earlier 1900's a rancher by the name of Fred Dangberg started a sheep camp in Hope Valley. He had approximately seven bands of sheep with 2,000 sheep per band thus a total of at least 14,000 sheep in total. There were so many sheep that herders were brought in to tend to them. Many of them herders came from Spain and France. These immigrants needed work and the Hope Valley area reminded them of being in Europe at times.

Dangberg had a sheep headquarters within the valley some of it is still visible eventually we will visit it so help preserve its history. However there was a Basque tender man that went by the name Jesus. In the 1930's he built a giant bread oven which still stands today. Its little tidbits of history like this that make this place even more precious.

Some of you may not even realize it but many movies were filmed in Hope Valley particularly at one of the cabins found here. Some of those movies were Larger Then Life with Bill Murray, American President with Michael Douglas and even Die Hard 2 with Bruce Willis. Hell maybe you have seen Hope Valley in a Harley Davidson or Timberland catalog. Just as many major car companies like Ford, Subaru, Toyota, Mercedes and even Budweiser have done commercials within this valley. This isn't even all of them Jack Daniel's and even Hertz rental car have used still shots from Hope Valley so it definitely is a very popular place.

Not only is it a popular place for businesses to use in there productions it has been well visited by celebrities like Whitney Houston, Nascar driver Jeff Gordon, George Lucas the director and even Lonnie Anderson. All kinds of people and walks of life drive right down Blue Lakes road which takes you through the heart of this quiet mystique valley.

There is so much to explore in this region and so much to view hidden within this valley. It was around when the Washoe hunted and fished for centuries and we hope it will be around for many more years to come. There is no place like it in the world so you can only imagine why Bigfoot is often found here crossing the meadow and going up into the meadows.
