The Settlement of Mottsville first began when Hiram Mott and his son Israel settled here in 1851 along the Emigrant Trail. Next to its sister community of Genoa the settlement of Mottsville you could say is also one of the oldest in Nevada. The settlement was not as large as some of these ghost towns are group has explored however it did boast a school, post office and many large ranches.

Israel Mott's wife was the first white woman settler named Eliza Ann Middaugh. Three years later opened the first school out of her kitchen. The first white girl to be born in the Carson lady was a girl then another child named Louisa Beatrice came along. Eliza was known as the educator of the Carson Valley since she opened a school in the 1850s right ouut of her very own kitchen.

Her poor husband Israel was killed in a tragic accident thus she became a widow in 1861 then eventually moved on to marry her neighbor A.M. Taylor. This story broke my heart really because it just proves life in the wild west was beyond dangerous. Your ticket could come up anytime in this region whether it was a mining accident or the wilderness had gotten you. On a good note Eliza lived till 1909 and remained in the Carson Valley area for over 50 years which tells you how what the pioneers seen when they first came here and the beauty the land held.  Some of that beauty can actually be found when we climbed over the Carson Range above Genoa and Mottsville through the Sierra Canyon and Genoa Peak!

 On another note n 1856 the first session of the US District Court of the Third District of Utah Territory was held here at the Mott Barn. The Mott's barn appeared to be the place of many town events and meetings. However just a couple miles away a settlement named Genoa was blooming which boasted one of Nevada's first structures and the Old Mormon Fort Station where goods could be obtained from.

In 1857 the Motts would have a third child which died. A tiny grave was erected which eventually led to Mottsville Graveyard. Israel and Eliza's infant son who passed on was the first in Carson County. As at one time Carson County expanded beyond just Carson City. The cemetery is all that remains of the original settlement. The Mott's homestead once resided just a few hundred feet from where this cemetery stands today.

Today the cemetery is a reminder that Mottsville once existed. Although there are a few ranches surrounding the cemetery all the mills and structures are completely gone. Other communities such as Minden, Gardnerville and Genoa continued to thrive while Mottsville was lost over time. Many new homes are found here some are very beautiful with great views of the Sierras its rather a quiet country atmosphere so I do enjoy exploring here.

Some of the best locations to investigate ghosts are not famous places you see on television but little jewels such as historical graveyards such as Mottsville. Back in the mid 1800's the west was beginning to grow. It was unexplored territory where those brave enough to endure it shared there knowledge with early pioneers working together to form unincorporated communities such as this one. Mottsville was named after the Mott's family and its very possible that some of there extended family members may have also been buried in the Genoa Historic Cemetery nearby!
