Our journey would begin at the south end of the San Francisco Bay as we cross it into San Mateo then ascend up to the top of the Santa Cruz Mountains. This coastal range is home to numerous rain forest, redwoods and has been the focal point for the paranormal for many years. Over the years UFOs, Bigfoot and quite a few notorious serial killers are all found here. This mountain range is an outdoor Mecca for those who live along the coast who are looking to get out in nature just outside the bay area. I will take you on a foggy journey and take our viewers up to Purissima's sister ghost town known as Tunitas Creek where some of the children were sent to school here. You will see historic ranches, green hill sides, foggy narrow road as we make our way from the top of the range all the way down to nearly the coastline. This range was home to the Ohlone tribe then later the pioneers that came here to lumber.

This is a short clip of my night journey in the Santa Cruz Mountains in the Purissima back country. Despite that their are some million dollars estates nestled deep in the forested hills its very dark and easy to get turned around. As a matter in fact its rather creepy you feel as if something is going to jump out at you at anytime. Before I started filming a great horned owl swooped down over my vehicle I could see it right out of my moon roof. One could understand as to why a creature like bigfoot could use this area as a habitat considering how overgrown it is back here to a degree that vegetation consumes the road sometimes growing over into the road. Ill take you up on some cliffs and will do a nice journey around the ghost town after midnight. I have always wanted to know what this ghost town was like at night get a feel for what the early settlers must had experienced and I have to say this place is dark as we are driving above the Pacific Ocean.

Our second day on our journey brought us up to the Purssima Creek Redwood Preserve where we backpack on a rainy and foggy morning through a grove. Most of the trees found in the grove were cut down due to heavy lumbering. Their was at least seven sawmills along the creek you see in this clip and more then often they floated the redwoods down to Purissima to be cut then shipped via railroad. Allot of that wood lumbered went to the building of Half Moon Bay and even parts of San Francisco. While some of the trees cut in this grove were used in construction of Purissima particularly Henry Dobbel's amazing mansion he built in the center of town. Today the trees you see are first and second generation but at one time some of the trees that grew in this grove were over 1200 years old and enormous. This journey should give our viewers an idea of how desolate this preserve is. Back in the day many of the lumberers lived in Purissima but worked day after day in this grove cutting down these trees here it was dangerous work these trees were widow makers. This beautiful rain forest resides just a few miles above the ghost town which makes it relevant to the towns early history.

Welcome to ground zero what once was open lush ranch land and a large bustling town has been erased from history. Today its merely a jungle filled with vegetation, thorns, snakes, ticks and heavy foliage. Not much remains today of the town but the saw mill, few wood boards, cemetery and a few trees planted by the towns founder. But at one time a massive 17 room mansion sat in this clearing surrounded by the town. Purissima named by the Spaniards translated Purest has hundreds of years of history. The Ohlone tribe had a village on the creek near where the ghost town is today. When the Spaniards landed in nearby San Gregorio Beach they had an encampment here before they moved on to discover the bay. When the town was growing in the 1850's squatters came here in large numbers taking the land from the Spanish who had a large ranch which served the mission. Henry Dobbel formed the town which had restaurants, hotels, train station, oil wells, plantations, blacksmith, school, church, dance hall, town cemetery, springs and many stores. Over the years many of the towns prominent folks had died, crops failed, railroad no longer operated and floods plagued the town leading to its demise. Some may theorize that Purissima was cursed from its early beginning just ask the dearly departed who came here and never left! The last time I was here someone stole my camera my second time visiting here I was severely injured Purissima has a way of picking you apart and testing you! This is a strange place I have found strange dens, skulls, giant mountain lion tracks and have noticed that thousands of birds consume this place.

Jarrod and I discovered the Devil's Slide Tunnel while looking for remnants of the sawmill. The tunnel was built in 2012. The tunnel resides down into the ravine where Purissima Creek flows out into the ocean. Therefore it considerable runs a fairly good distance under highway 1 before it comes out to deep pool of water. The tunnel has allot of graffiti inside and although its not that old based on my investigation aside from the video I found it to be one of the more haunted parts of town. Perhaps because the floods of 1862 and 1832 brought destruction and tragedy. The water that came through here at one time was so intense that massive redwoods were being carried right to the ocean side cliffs. It would be no easy task to get to the tunnel there rocky wall was slipper and the tree I was holding onto gave way I fell almost 10' while filming this. If you do not believe this area is a jungle wait till you see how difficult it was for us to make our way out of the ravine where we ran into thorn brush, deep holes, heavy impassable vegetation and tons of ticks. We eventually did push our way through the brush and out of the ravine where we hike along Hwy. 1 and up to the old sawmill which resides above the tunnel. Before the tunnel was built back in the day there was a water wheel which helped power the sawmill in Purissima.

When Henry Hobbel arrived in Purissima he purchased 1000 acres of land and hired about 50 men to work his plantation. They grew everything from wheat to corn, barley and even potatoes. At the time the land was fertile to a degree it still is as ranching does continue to transpire in the region. I am going to take our viewers to a pond more then likely this open area was Henry's ranch then again its possible that at one time some of the townsite could have resided here. Hobbel eventually loaned out far to much money after trying to become a general store owner slowly letting going of his farming dreams. He ended up losing his land, mansion and even his wife in 1885. He would die an old lonely man in Purissima in 1895. Not much would have changed back in the day the townsfolk would have fished in the nearby creek and possibly even this pond. One can imagine that at one time in the 1800's these hillsides had crops growing everywhere as Purissima was really an agricultural center which brought in the Chinese, Irish and German immigrants who sought work here. The lower foothills of Purissima had great land for ranching while higher up in the mountains the real cream of the crop was its redwood trees.

The land for the cemetery was deeded to the town by a John Purcell. Anybody who became a resident of Purissima was offered burial at no cost to their loved ones. Supposedly their are 62 graves hidden up on this overlooking the ocean but I heard their may be as many as 200  graves most of them unmarked or under very heavy vegetation. Many of the people buried here died in epidemics some even in severe floods that struck the area back in 1862 while its even possible Spaniards from the Portola expedition may also be buried nearby. Really when you think about it all that remains of the town is this cemetery. Their is a strange story told besides it being haunted that back in the 1800's a boy had gotten very ill and supposedly his parents buried him prematurely because he slipped into a coma. Worried they exhumed the casket only to find that the body had been turned over. This is a very difficult cemetery to navigate overgrown by the rain forest with vines, brush, thorns and even a few drop-offs with no bottom in site. I ended up injuring myself during this exploration fell on my organs hard almost had to go to the emergency room for internal bruising and busted ribs. But I did manage to finish off my research here a cemetery so very few ever have gotten to see and perhaps one of the oldest graveyards in San Mateo County California.

Back in the 1700's Captain Portola led an expedition to Monterrey Bay under the rule of the Spanish King. Unfortunately the captain along with his galleons had gotten lost and when they could not find it they ended up landing on San Gregorio beach. The journey was tedious and long while some men had scurvy others drank some bacterial infected water from the creek here which led to dysentery and eventually death. Many of Portola's men simply did not make it but the expedition continued northbound where they traded with the Ohlone tribe who had a village at Purissima Creek. Before the explorers moved on to discover the San Francisco Bay they had an encampment where the ghost town stands today. San Gregorio Beach is an amazing little place with a sea cave, lagoon and beautiful cliffs everywhere. Not much has changed since Portola and his men stood on these shores! Back in the 1800's this was a large ranch which served the mission in San Fran then in the 1900's their were many cheese factories located here. Since then the beach has become a state park a great way to finish the day after trudging through the rain forest of Purissima. I also met a new furry friend a beautiful Bengal cat playing in the soft pristine sands. Many folks would come down from San Francisco they would break at the Purissima Stage Stop then enjoy a day at San Gregorio.
