During the Gold Rush prospectors flooded the American River within the Foresthill Divide after Gold was discovered around Coloma. Around 1850 the town of Michigan City was founded and mining had begun. The miners began in 1853 Hydraulic Mining which by the 1860's was banned with the exception of Last Chance.

In 1857 a massive fire struck the town the winds of the sierras carried it from one home to the next within almost an hour most of the town was decimated. The residents fought back rebuilding everything at the same site. Perhaps this is one of the greatest downfalls maybe the fire was an indication or a sign that others failed to recognize. Perhaps greed set in to be closer to their mines as miners sought out gold around there houses. The beautiful land surrounding the town was mined so heavily that natural springs and entire mountain sides were completely in ruin.

Anyhow, the Town was built on a hill more or less on the edge of the divide which you see in this panorama photo I took above this is why the name was changed to Michigan Bluff. Living on the edge may have been towns downfall as in 1858 the land began to slide down into the river. The divide itself is an amazing site its almost as if its the grand canyon of the sierras. The problem was that mining tunnels ran underneath many of the homes, stores and businesses. That year within a night the land began to slide timbers and foundations were cracking. The houses began to shift and slide right down into the abyss two miles below. The abyss is the Foresthill Divide where many have died at over the years going over the edge. I drove along the abyss and I will say its exhilarating everyone should at least try it once. Imagine back in the day taking a horse wagon along its narrow roads to head on into this town?

After the landslide the entire town was moved about a half of mile away and rebuilt. This probably also led to having hydraulic mining banned as the water caused serious erosion. Although the town profited about 100k a month the method of mining used was destructive all for gold. Gold made folks crazy people for a century killed over it. Men were greedy never once caring about the land or even there own town.

However it was the gold that improved the towns method of mining and in most cases caused towns like these to expand. For example the town had two clothing stores, two fire proof buildings, five provision stores, three hotels, two restaurants, four barbershops, two bakeries, five shoemakers, three doctors, two expressmen, two German tailors, five saloons which boasted billiards for recreation, two stables, two tin men, two druggist, Masonic lodge, Odd Fellows Hall, Sons Of Temperance Hall, multiple churches, schoolhouse, musician, carpenters, two judges, sheriff, two constables and even a blacksmiths. This at one time was what Michigan Bluff stood for. Sure it had its murders and outlaws afterall it was the wild west. It had grown to about 3000 residents today the population here is probably less then 50 if that.

One notable figured who lived in the town was Leland Stanford who was a Governor of California and a member of the big four who built the Central Pacific Railroad. Leland operated a store in this town from 1853 to about 1855 today his old home still stands. Stanford was also a contributor and donor of Stanford University. This was a man that laid out his foundation for the future in Michigan Bluff.

The town began to decline in the 1870's perhaps because most of the gold was mined out of here although profits continued over the years as new mining techniques were introduced such as flumes. Some mining still took place all the way up until the beginning of the 1900's but not allot. Eventually it would come to a halt until another small boom in the 1930's for awhile. In 1960 there was a forest fire in the region that chased away many of the towns longterm residents leaving only a few behind.

Today not allot remains there is a Pet Cemetery up the road and surrounded by many of the older historic houses is the Masonic Cemetery. The town had about 40 masons who resided if not all most of them are buried up on a hillside. There are a few old homes on hillsides that been restored and are occupied. The town site itself sits in a unique position as its on the western trail which takes you up into Last Chance, Deadwood and eventually up to Iowa Hill. Its a friendly place that sits off in seclusion and most of the residents have very cheerful pets. During my tour of the town I met a horse and a dog both of them I played with instead of ghosthunting like I should have lol.

Whether the town is haunted I have no doubts about the fact is people died here the cemetery is a symbol of this fact. I do not care what anyone says there are ghost everywhere and anywhere. Its a matter of getting the dearly departed being around at the time you are conducting your investigation. However I did get a few mild EMF readings here maybe some of the old power lines caused it cannot be for certain. However there is an obvious that many of the homes on the hillsides here have history and with history there is ghost!
