The isolated town of Deadwood was discovered in 1852 when those seeking wealth from the Gold Rush had hoped to strike it rich. When Coloma California became overly mined others sought the gold elsewhere hence the discovery of it in Deadwood became a town site for the miners. The town is situated with El Dorado Canyon to the north and the Northwest of the American River. The downfall of this town was the fact that the snow here was unforgiving thus by 1855 the town began to die after reaching its peak of about 500 plus residents.

When the town began to decline allot of the miners moved on to Last Chance, Iowa Hill and Michigan Bluff while in some cases it was the other way around. The western trail goes right up into the heart of Deadwood which more then often mule trains brought in supplies. At the time there was no wagon trail unless you were to go around El Dorado Canyon or Devils Basin which then became a 70 mile journey. The Western Trail however shortened the travel distance considerably however it was very narrow hence why mules were used instead of wagons to carry on in the supplies on their backs.

Ditches were dug throughout the town which brought water on in from the canyons as the town used Hydraulic and Tunnel mining. The tunnel mining continued in the area for many years the Hydraulic Mining however was banned in the early 1860's. The mines did quite well in this region despite the town dying on out they outlived in the town. One resident named Sam Colt lived in Deadwood who designed the Colt 45 which even today is still considered to be one of the greatest guns ever made.

The town had a number of tragedies for example a massive snowstorm hit on Christmas even in 1860 where two miners went to work attending to one of their ditches miles higher up into the surrounding mountains. The snow continued to fall depths were higher then most of the men who resided in Deadwood. Both of the men froze to death nobody could find their bodies. The coyotes fed on one of the men eating his face and other body parts. The masons would retrieve the body but only a couple weeks later where they found him in a ditch. The other man was never seen again at least not till spring when the snow thawed. Just as that Christmas eve an avalanche swept a house into the canyon below a father and his son were swept away. Both of them survived however the son was buried under the snow as other strong men helped dig him out.

Deadwood was a happy place despite such tales of tragedy as some deaths were related to the weather here while others hid inside their cabins with a fire lit all winter long. There was allot of risk to becoming wealthy while some did make money it didn't do you any good if you were not alive to enjoy it. It is extremely easy to get lost surrounding Deadwood after all today the town site resides in Tahoe National Forest which is extremely thick in foliage and hard to navigate.

Near the town was a place the miners called a creek with rapids and seasonal waterfalls Bogus Thunder. It was so loud that the prospectors more then often thought it was thundering out. The creeks and rivers in this region held treasure that treasure would be gold. This is why the miners of Deadwood used Hydraulic Mining. They were able to direct this water through a pipe and collect the gold from all the sediment. Rapids like these carried gold flakes as it stirred the bottom of the creek up for miles.

The only remaining part of the town today is the cemetery which today resides down a long narrow stretch of dirt road deep in the Tahoe National Forest. Parts of the road split off like an intricate maze into a vast wilderness of overgrown forest. This burial ground which sits back on the trail leads out to a clearing in the woods where a memorial list 17 names of those who lived there days out in Deadwood. I have some reason to believe that there are more burials here then what is listed based on the fact that I read stories about some of the men who lost there lives to the cold here that were not found listed on the memorial. Maybe they were buried elsewhere however with all due things considered there is not one single tombstone to be found here. The memorial was erected at a later date just as the pioneer plaque also found here. Considering the fact that the town didn't last very long nor did it have a very high population 17 plus burials is rather high!

Today the forest has consumed the entire area and if anything does remain it is overgrown and nearly impossible to navigate. If you happen to turn off at Deadwood instead of turning down the dirt road that leads to the site continue straight and you can visit Placer Big Trees Grove a marvel that the miners here enjoyed and at one time nearly lumbered. The Tahoe National Forest is known for its Bigfoot Sightings and sure enough many of its historic sites are more then likely haunted. There are a few wells near the cemetery entrance that can be seen and wood post all signs that at one time pioneers overcame this harsh terrain while some had it overcome them!
