The Lakes Basin area within the Plumas National Forest was formed by glaciers thousands of years ago overshadowed by the craggy peaks of the Sierra Buttes. As a matter in fact their are probably minimum at least 50 naturally formed lakes found within the basin. When the first miners came to the region they carved out many of the roads and trails still seen today. As more travelers begin to stop along the way to visiting local towns like Jameson City, Johnsville, Sierra City and a few others locally they begin looking for new recreational opportunities. This desire for relaxation let to the improvement of many of the old trails so that folks in the later 1800's could enjoy all that the area has to offer. People would travel up here to hike, mountain climb, wilderness camp, hunting, boating, swim and fish which has been a longstanding tradition within this basin. In the later 1800's it was considered a therapeutic cure to venture within this basin and by 1926 the area boasted quite a few popular resorts.

An example of such lodges and resorts would be the lodge at Sardine Lake first constructed in 1941 then a few years later six cabins were added. Just as on Packer Lake which was on an early gold mining mule pack trail had a lodge built in 1926 here which boasted canvas platform tents and log cabins. The largest of the lakes was home to the Lodge at Gold Lake in the mid 1950's. Gold Lake Road which skirts the outer edge of the basin was constructed in 1913 to provided convenient access to the resorts. Before you turn off onto Gold Lake Road you will also see Bassetts Station which was a way station over 125 years ago and continues to serve as a rest and supply stop for weary travelers. Then we have the Elwell Lakes Lodge built in 1920 which offers rustic relaxation offering its visitors opportunities to climb Elwell Peak, fishing, over 23 lakes all within a few mile radius, swimming, hiking and other activities. Their is a little something for everyone in the basin and unlike other regions of the Sierras their is a very organized network of trails so that you can reach many of the body of waters found within the map I posted above.

The first inhabitants of the area were the Native Americans particularly the Maidu tribe but also so did the Nisenan and Washo tribes. The land was fertile and thriving which made it an ideal location for the tribes to migrate too in the warmer months. Its an ancient area full of petroglyphs and these tribes depicted whatever it was they had encountered or seen.
Which I have not been able to find a reasoning behind one said petroglyph which looks like some UFO and a giant foot nearby etched into the rocks which may be symbolic in relation to Bigfoot but of course that is my take on it all. The natives that once lived off these lands for centuries were being wiped out by disease and often they were chased off their lands due to the California Gold Rush in Coloma California. As a matter in fact the first settlement that came up to the edge of this lost world was established in 1850 by a Philo A. Haven and Joseph Zumbwalt who also were the same founders of nearby Downieville aka Sinnott. Unfortunately the miners had no idea how harsh of an area this was during the winter and in 1852 an avalanche destroyed nearly the entire settlement which sat abandoned after for many years.

A Christian, Gustav and Ferdinand Reis purchased quite a few mining claims near the Sierra Buttes forming Sierra City which was built further below the avalanche zone and that town grew to a population of about 3,000 people by 1859. Every 4th of July the women and men in town would make the climb to the top of the buttes which overlooks the entire basin. When men were not mining they were off adventuring within the basins many lakes some would hunt they had families they had to feed. The natives sort of had gotten absorbed into becoming miners and taking on general labor jobs. But they no longer were hunting, gathering, skinning furs or even following their traditional values because the tribe nearly was eradicated. So if disease did not wipe out the tribe you certainly were left alive not being able to enjoy the basin the way your ancestors did.

Many hard rock gold mines were developed around the buttes as a matter in fact I was told there are over 50 miles worth of tunnels above the basin some say even hundreds of miles possibly. Mines like the Monumental, Keystone, Kentucky, Columbo, Sierra Buttes and William Tell Mine are just to name a few. Some of the largest gold nuggets in the state of California were discovered in the Monumental Mine the first one being 1,500 troy ounces the second weighing in at over 1,800 troy ounces. See in 1869 that nugget found in the Monumental came in at 106 pounds and at the time it was the largest single piece ever found in the county and second largest in California. In 1972 a man by the name of Jack Rose found a 28 ounce piece of gold while out hunting which tells me their still is plenty of gold waiting to be discovered in this basin.

Those that did not hard rock mine often mined for placer gold which could be found nearby in the Yuba River and even some of the lakes. Gold nuggets and flakes would run down the mountains during rainstorms and snow melt. The final result is that it would end up in nearby streams, rivers and many of the lakes that we have visited. Although none of the lakes ever revealed any major gold strikes it kept lonely old prospectors a reason to keep on going in hopes of striking it rich. But due to heavy snowfall, steep terrain and a series of avalanches that occurred between 1859 till about 1911 life was difficult here. What once was a mining Mecca filled with bell whistles in the air from many of the stamp mills that operated out here slowly transitioned to a place that people could actually cherish. So the real treasure is not the regions gold but the regions unforeseen pristine beauty!

Being a history buff I like to integrate the subject with natural beauty because together they really make wonderful additions on our website. For thousands of years the Maidu summered here. If you explore primitive the region enough your going to come across old village sites, acorn grinding rocks and numerous petroglyphys which is all that really remains of ancient tribe. When I explore the basin and some of its lakes I try to envision what it is the natives would have seen or experienced. To be honest with you very little has changed in centuries only difference is that the areas winters are not as harsh as they were 150 years ago. But what you are witnessing in our galleries is exactly what the ancient Maidu would have seen during their travels to the basin.

Back in 1952 tour buses, restaurants and a few motels became main stream in the Sierra City area which really is the gateway or closest town to the basin. People came from all over the world just to see the famous buttes and summit them. Others came here just to backpack at the variety of lakes the area offers and every one of them is unique may I add. I am sure that I will never seen the entire basin in my lifetime then again you could spend many lifetimes exploring this region and still not see it all. Which is what makes it an area that is prone to bigfoot sightings and experiences. Do you know why these creatures are found here? Its not just the remoteness which can conceal new forms of life but also the abundance of water which attracts these creatures. Without fresh, clean and plentiful water life would not be abundant in this basin. Since the last ice age these lakes have all existed and they will continue to exist as long as drought in the future does not cause them to dry up.

Most of the basin is part of the Plumas National Forest which is located in the northern terminus of the Sierra Nevada and was named after its primary watershed, the Rio De Las Plumas, which was later anglicized "Feather River". The forest makes up about 1,146,000 acres and is found in Butte, Sierra, Lassen and Yuba Counties. Plumas was established as the Plumas Forest Reserve by the General Land Office in 1905. By 1906 the forest was transferred to the U.S. Forest Service and in 1907 it was designated as a National Forest. In 1908 a portion of the Diamond Mountain National Forest was added and the Bucks Lake Wilderness was officially designated in 1984 as part of the National Wilderness Preservation System. Just to the south of the Lakes Basin is the Tahoe National Forest one of the most northernmost regions of it to be precise before it transitions into the Plumas National Forest.

What really brought many miners to the region back in the day was a man by the name of Thomas Robertson Stoddart who old wild tales of gold that lined the shores of what is known as Gold Lake. Miners would come back here in droves camping on these lakes hoping for a piece of the pie. This in turn chased the Natives off there land and really gold was not as abundant as some had thought it to be at Gold Lake. They were mere exaggerations or fish tales told by a lonely man in hopes of provoking other fortune seekers. While Gold Lake produced so little in gold the region as a whole produced millions in precious metals including even Silver. I did some digging to find out that while many of the rustic lodges still stand today quite a few sites no longer exist or stand on some of the basins lakes. For example Kelly's Cabins at Gold Lake are long gone and so is the Lewis Camp at Little Bear Lake. Then we have Gritten's Boathouse which for many years could be seen floating on Long Lake.  Gold Lake supposedly had an old hotel once on its shores as well my guess is that the hotel along with many of the other sites I have mentioned have been lost to history.

The Lakes Basin Recreation Area was created somewhere around 180,000 years ago when glaciers covered the entire area. The annual melting and refreezing created frost wedging, cracking and loosening of rock and as the glaciers moved they carried that looose debris carving out the landscape. This process created the post glacial waterfall known as Frazier Falls that is a bonus addition found on these pages. As the snow compressed crystallizing into ice it removed all the vegetation, soil and loosened any rock in its path. This process could have taken thousands of years but this would be the end result that you would get even before the first tribes wandered the basin. Frazier Creek is fed via Gold Lake what happens is you get about ten feet if not more of snow on the local ridges then in the spring it begin to melt feeding both the lake and the creek five miles downstream. As the water tumbles down Frazier Creek, trees and other plant life absorb some of this water into their root system which is why you may find certain plants growing in the middle of the high rushing water. Just miles downstream after a 2k drop Frazier Creek meets up with the middle fork of the Feather River near the town of Graeagle California. As the snow melt ends the water at Frazier Falls becomes less prevalent and then it rarely ever reaches the Middle Fork into the summer. The falls are one of the tallest in the high sierras and are a true gem of the Lakes Basin area with a height of 248' if you included the cascading sections. You can hike out to the falls by taking one of the original wagon routes that came through the area.

Our projects in the Lakes Basin are far from over their are so many lakes we have yet to see, explore and we would eventually like to do more research in the area like our first visit to Snag Lake. While you may only see the lakes listed in the map above there are dozens more to the south that are in the Tahoe National Forest to the south that are sister lakes of the ones you see listed. Ever since I read some stories about people being chased or having boulders thrown at there vehicles in the area it has further drawn my interest to find out who or what is causing this whether its a bigfoot or a human factor. I feel like when I hike here I am in some lost world awaiting to discover something yet remaining to be seen. Its hard to know all the regions secrets but I feel honored to be able to share our chronicles with all of you as we traverse one of California's most pristine, untouched and glacial carved basin.
