I was so excited to visit the Lakes Basin area to be honest with you I been up here now for years and every single time I tried to go the road back up in here was snowed in. You can easily have six feet of snow on the road even in the later Spring so the past couple times I tried I just could not get deeper into the basin.

The last time I was up here hiking was a few weeks prior just on the other side of the buttes. The Sierra Buttes are massive generally covered in snow most of the year. Below the buttes are dozens of lakes all for the taking. Not just lakes but mills, mines, ponds, canyons, streams and so much more to see.

I was up here a few weeks prior at a place called Johnstown which is this little semi ghost town and above it Eureka Lake. I then moved onto the Eureka Mine Camp and parts of Jamison City. I absolutely fell in love with this area especially the beauty that the Plumas National Forest offers. therefore I could not wait to actually get hiking into it for one of my first time was rather exciting.

The closest I ever made it into the basin was along the edge of it at a place called Snag Lake. My experience there was fun but at the same time a bit stressful because some idiot left a fire burning I had allot of issues trying to put out because it was windy. People are idiots what if it caught the forest on fire that would mean all the old historic lodges, town of Sierra City and entire basin would have burned down?

My plan was to hit some of the more major lakes in the region while there are lakes that are not as well traveled or known the first project was more or less an intro to the area. I plan on elaborating in the future with camping trips, primitive hikes and visiting the less known lakes. But for now I wanted to stick with Long, Silver, Round, Cub, Little Bear, Big Bear and Gold Lakes. In between we would visit a petroglyph site and some of the most majestic waterfalls in the sierra.

I would grab my coffee take the scenic gold chain highway and before I knew it the snowcapped Sierra Buttes would be coming into full view along with the lakes basin. Most of the lakes you cant see from the highway you have to park hit the trail heads then you can hike to different parts of the basin to see some of the lakes found here. I was not sure id get back here or not you never know if the road is still out even in the Spring but sure enough their was no snow and it was mine for the taking.

Lakes Basin California

When we arrived I parked up near the Elwell Lakes Lodge although I did not explore it because I was more excited to get out to Long Lake. I heard what sounded like a puppy crying when I was suiting up and prepping my pack for the hike. I turn around and there is this little chocolate lab hopping around could not have been no more then two months old so adorable.

Sadly his owners were not around and I could not just leave the dog in the parking lot that is dangerous. I thought if he goes into those woods he could get attacked by a wild animal, get lost or worst. So I decided id take the puppy hiking with us till we could find its owner perhaps someone elderly hiking on the trails and the puppy may have ran from them who knows!

I know folks like to make me out to be the bad guy all the time but I try to take the work that I do and use it as a force for good. Therefore, I decided that I would not let anything happen to the pup he did not know better and boy was he sweet licking my face etc. We took the little guy over a mile out to Long Lake with us it was a bit of a slow going hike considering there was allot of mud, patches of snow and some steep inclines to get up to the lake.

I never really hiked the Plumas but all I can say is wow what an amazing national forest. Its so green, lush and there is just so much water out here no matter where you hike. This includes seasonal creeks running over the trails, smaller unnamed ponds and a variety of nature. The views were not very eye popping for awhile if you want good views you have to get out to these lakes which are all back dropped by snowy cliffs.

We would eventually make it up to Long Lake this lake is much larger then it looks and overshadowed by the beautiful Mt. Elwell. There is a bench you can sit on up here and the water is super clear great for swimming. The only problem is there is a ton of foliage around the lake and we were getting stung by bees. They looked like these black and white colored bees or a type of bumblebee but every one of us had gotten stung and they would not leave us alone.

We moved further down and my son went for a swim the puppy was playing for awhile also. That puppy probably had no idea where he was or what was going on. But my son did help carry him in certain places the trail was bad so by the time we got to Long Lake he was wanting to swim and explore. A couple came up to me asked about the puppy I then explained to them what happened and luckily they knew who they owners were thank goodness.

This poor dog could have gotten eaten by a mountain lion if it were not for us to take him with us. I was happy to reunite the puppy with familiar faces although he was definitely a cutie pie. But quite the handful because I could not let him out of our site for a couple of miles. But I was glad to do something good for someone and id hope if my dog ran off someone would watch over mine till I could locate it.

The next hike would be to Silver Lake which I think is prettier then Long Lake although when you hike out to Silver Lake you switchback above Long and it kind of puts the area into perspective. There was a group of people who asked me to take there photo the girl was pretty cute who asked for the favor. It seems like there is quite a few younger people backpacking out this way not so much in other places I have journeyed in these mountains.

I always like seeing these young people with no backpack, water or supplies its like going into the  mountains naked when you think about it. Even though it was nearly summer it still was pretty hot up in the basin this time of year and I am glad we had plenty to drink and eat. But its pretty funny to see others not even carry one simple bottle of water. I just think that is pure laziness and you should keep up on fluids.

Eventually we made it to Silver Lake there was a small sign talking about it. We took a break near this fallen tree and took a nice family photo up here which I have hanging over my mantle. The cliffs and peaks are really nice up here because they are covered more so in snow then at Long Lake. Then again your at a much higher altitude up here but no less its a prettier lake then the last.

We would hike along the shoreline for awhile south and eventually off to Round Lake. Its a bit confusing back here because we nearly made a wrong term heading out to Gold Lake instead so we had to turn around and figure it out. Allot of the trails up here were still snow covered at one time there was a few flooded areas we had to work through to get past.

Round Lake is really isolated we did not see anyone back here although a half hour prior we seen these loud obnoxious punks acting loud, stupid and the guy had to be in his mid 20's threw right in front of us his empty water jug on the ground. I hate when people just litter and do not show any consideration. If you are hiking in the wilderness and this beauty then at least pick up after yourself. Do not junk it up the same goes with putting out your fires.

I went through this big open area or meadow and we found this one lake kind of submerged still by snow. More then likely it was a pond but I think my GPS said it was Lake Victoria. Maybe it was just a pond hard to know but it sat between Silver and Round Lakes. There are dozens of bodies of water like this the lakes basin is full of ponds which is why it makes it a great area to do bigfoot research at.

We did have lunch up at Round Lake found this little area where the creek was flooded and a woodsy area near the lake to sit down on. Nothing was out of the ordinary or strange although I did hear something moving around in the woods up here. It does not appear that Round Lake gets very few visitors there is kind of nothing else to see nearby its off by itself but its very scenic and yes its quite round which is where it had gotten its name from. This lake had a series of fish jumping from its waters not bad considering how isolated it is.

We would retrace our steps head back north again along Silver Lake then we would jet to the east where we would hit a series of three lakes Cub, Little Bear and Big Bear Lakes. Cub reminds me more of a marshy little pond but Little and Big Bear are much larger in size or in comparison rather. Big Bear has these awesome rocks you can dive off of where the water is really deep. Really both little and big bear lakes are connected only by a narrow land mass or rather small narrow creek.

On my way past Big Bear we would have to cross this creek it was running hardcore. If you do not like getting your feet wet my suggestion is do not hike back here because there is mud and water everywhere. My feet were wet for at least half the hike and it felt good because it cooled me down. At one point between Cub and Round Lake I dove down the side of a snow covered hill then laid in it for awhile. It definitely was great for cooling down!

The Bear Lakes seem to be less scenic then the other lakes I had been to. These lakes reside at lower elevations and are surrounded by dense woods. The shorelines are very primitive there is no lake trail around them really and lots of little marshy coves. Big Bear is the largest its much deeper but since the trail only skirts both lakes briefly I did not get to see much. There was a snow covered hill off in the distance and lots of granite rocks which are found everywhere which gives off its glacial attributes.

I would walk through Elwell Lodge there are many old rustic cabins in the woods. I have thought about maybe renting a cabin somewhere in the Lakes Basin. Do a little fishing, hiking, explore and just get in touch with nature. I find that when I am able to camp spend time in a location I can do better research then the time I was allotted on this trip. Do not get me wrong I covered plenty of the basin but not every outing do we find the existence of Bigfoot. I did see a few worn tracks on the expedition but I could not be certain what or whom made them.

Anyhow, a few really cool sites to see at the Elwell is the lounge and recreational building. One of them has this big grand fireplace I did not go inside but this is a place to relax, enjoy the views, cozy up next to a fire and hike to various lakes. Which I had just done but would have loved to stay at a cabin. Elwell is not the only historic lodge dating back from the 1920s era there are plenty of other ones down various roads within this basin. I just happened to park near the Elwell and take one of the trails on in then planned my route so I could hit all these great lakes.

Most of the trails back here are like spider webs they just go everywhere and some even go on the back sides of the lakes I seen then up over peaks to other lakes. Its a very extensive area nonetheless. I got a few friends who enjoy offroading up here and I may have to take them up on the offer because we have so much left to see out here.

Speaking of seeing the sites I did stop after Elwell at the Lake Basin Petroglyphs. They are on a huge granite slab with a plaque with some information. I noticed two things about the glyphs A. A giant foot and B. What appeared to be a UFO. Maybe I am not seeing what others see who knows but the big foot sort of reminded me of a depiction of Bigfoot. I mean its this giant foot one of the biggest glyphs there so maybe it is related or maybe its not. I know that the Indians went to war with Bigfoot hundreds of years ago because these creatures were stealing the women and children from local villages. Maybe the UFO is depicting ancient alien visitors its no less fun to speculate at these ancient sites.

I would then jeep on out to Frazier Falls its a short dirt road across the gold chain highway not far from Elwell. It seemed like it was taking forever but eventually we would arrive at the parking area. Their is a trail use to be an old wagon road now its paved which takes you to these overlooks to see Frazier Falls. The creek was flowing really good to we crossed this bridge not far from where it drops off and man if you fell in you might be in trouble. Lots of snow melt and water flowing as it tumbled over the falls.

The overlooks had a bench we sat down for a bit read a few plaques. There was these cuties drinking beer and they said to me I hope you do not mind us drinking and I said to them hope you do not mind me toking some 420 lol. This is a popular little waterfall seemed to be lots of college gals just hanging out here every guys dream come true I guess lol. But some eye candy was not so bad considering how I just came out of a rugged wet wilderness.

I noticed across the canyon a group of guys hanging out near the falls and rapids. If you ask me that is far to close to get you tumble in, slip on a wet rock or if your sitting in the water and lose your balance your going over. These falls are over 240' and the first 50' are steep cascades and sharp rocks. The other 200' of these falls is a straight drop off to the big boulders and rocks below. People every year die going over falls in the high sierras more so up near Yosemite but it can happen here. I think the dude hanging out on the edge was the same dude who dumped the water jug up near Silver Lake. These people have no idea what the hell they are doing apparently daddy did not teach them proper outdoor safety or to clean up after themselves.

My last stop of the day would be Gold Lake one of these days I am going to take the jeep road back on the south side and camp out on it. They have little Gold Lake, Squaw Lake and then of course Gold Lake sits to the north of both of them. I have a buddy who camps back here so I wanted to at least see what the lake is about. There was folks canoeing on the lake water was a bit choppy and there is this spillway or rather waterfall that was just rushing as water was pouring into Frazier Creek. Just five miles downstream are the falls from here. My son and I hung out on the wall near the falls skipping and throwing rocks it was a nice way to finish off the evening.

I did spend time on the lakeshore watching ducks and other birds to just before the sun went down. Gold Lake is really an amazing place and will work with it on an entirely different project. We have to many projects out here and lakes to see to just say were done. Id like to do more bigfoot research up here to try to find out why the bigfoot experiences before are having are so hostile or aggressive. The folks who have had experiences up here go beyond just a vocalization. There is plenty of cliffs probably caves and remote peaks which surround these lakes. While its a bustling hiking area at night nobody is out or about here so anything could come down to the lake shore just for a drink.

We ended our day at a beautiful lake and waterfall it had been my first time in the Lakes Basin and I cant wait honestly to go back. I have these three tier lakes that have remnants of a mining camp along the way which we will work with. I think that by the time were done with this project people are really going to value the beauty of this area overall. I cant say I found bigfoot evidence on this trip but we were stung by bees and we did manage to uncover some pretty mysterious things about the Lake Basin Petroglyphs which will open up some new doorways for us in the future! There are quite a few dens, caves or piles of rocks some of which we searched some which are to hard to get to which also may be good prospects to find DNA evidence of something maybe utilizing such shelters to remain elusive or get out of the elements.
Peace,
Lord Rick
While most petroglyphs found in the high sierra cannot be deciphered since they are mere squiggles, lines and worn images what it does prove is that ancient civilization inhabited this region. At times some of the objects, figures and etchings of familiar things may or may not have meaning. I found it very intriguing that one of the images depicted on the rocks was a giant foot while another almost looks like a UFO or craft. Its hard to know what story the Lakes Basin Petroglyphs are trying to depict then again maybe we as humans tend to read into such images a little more. Over my years of detailed hard earned research the two things I have come to terms with is A. Bigfoot did and does reside in the sierra mountains and B. UFOs are very prevalent as well in this region. It is very possible when the natives first came to this range migrating throughout it they also witnessed such things and tried to detail it within the rocks for future generations to see and perhaps learn about it. The tribes that came to the Lakes Basin hunted, fished, gathered and they utilized the dozens of lakes which have been around for hundreds if not thousands of years.
While we may be mainly a paranormal site were also an adventure group therefore I always try to teach people about safety when it comes to journeying to these beautiful pristine locations. This is Frazier Falls as you can see this is a not a force to be reckoned with if you were to fall on into the creek, slip on a rock or foolishly decide to take a chance swim you could end up going over. According to what I have read the waterfall stands at 248' in height however the first 72' is a series of steep cascading sections then its a straight drop off for nearly 176' to the jagged rocks below. This waterfall is the gem of the Lakes Basin area. Frazier Creek begins at Gold Lake then about a mile away it continues over the cliffs and continues through the canyon. Every single year a few folks in the sierras end up hiking around or swimming around waterfalls similar to Fraziers. The end result is often death and generally the bodies sometimes are not recovered for a few days because once they hit the bottom of the falls the rapids continue to carry their bodies for miles. I took a few photos of this group of young women and men who were standing merely a few feet away from the cascading rapids. If you pay attention one of the individuals has a towel with him YES he was trying to swim and even if he was not the rocks near where they are all standing are slippery and wet. If you fell in or per say lost balance the force of the water funneling through this narrow channel are very powerful therefore there would be nothing to stop you from tumbling over the falls and certainly nothing to grab onto. At the time I was filming this it reminded me of reading a few articles about a couple deaths in the same month up in Yosemite which has some of the most majestic largest waterfalls on the planet however a 1000' or a couple hundred death is death and you will hit the rocks with the same veracity so bare that in mind. Do not swim near the falls or get near the edge I certainly do not want to be hiking and look across the canyon to see you or someone else go over the edge hitting the rocks below!
This is only one of many rock shelters, caves and dens found in the Lakes Basin area. These are the ones you will see while exploring but imagine all the ones you do not need hidden up on some of the peaks found surrounding the lakes. If that is not enough their is about fifty or more miles of tunnels in the sierra buttes which overshadow this region old mines no less and today abandoned. So when people ask me where or how can Bigfoot sustain himself remaining elusive well the answer is really simple. These primitive creatures live underground or in dens like the one you see high up on the side of this hill covered in nearly impossible brush to trek through in order to get to it. You cant possibly sight something like bigfoot if you cannot see him and when these creatures stay in caves it allows them to remain elusive but also stay out of the elements. The natives also utilized such caves some might even contain petroglyphs in them which is why I love this area so much because it offers up so many great things. If bigfoot does not live in a cave like this then maybe something else does like a mountain lion or black bear one must wonder!
We were greeted in the parking area by this chocolate lab puppy. Since nobody was around and he followed us everywhere we took him hiking with us trying to located his owner on the trails. Which is probably a good thing considering this puppy would have either gotten lost or been killed by a cougar. After a couple hours of hiking, swimming, carrying the pup over patches of us and spending time at Long Lake a couple walked up to us asking if we had seen a puppy somewhere on the trails. We brought this Cutie over to them and I guess the folks were friends with whoever lost the dog. I think the couple was camping or hiking did not get the entire story and the puppy took off on them. We have video footage of the entire event including when the puppy came up to us all the way to the hike and eventually reuniting this puppy with familiar faces. I come across quite a bit of things on my bigfoot jaunts its not always monsters sometimes its animals or someone's pet or someone injured etc etc. Its up to people like us to do the right thing even before chasing the paranormal that is why our organization has a good reputation over the years because we go above and beyond every single time!
