 Johnsville was the site of one of the earliest gold discoveries in California. You will not find much information about its history and if you were not looking you probably would never have known it existed. Today Johnsville is merely a semi-ghost town while about twelve residents live here what once was a booming mining town merely is a rural hamlet in the heart of the Sierra Nevada mountains.  Honesty, if you had thrown in a white picket fence and lived in a nice cozy home here it probably in the minds of most be a dream come true with flowers growing everywhere, adorable little cemetery containing pioneers of all the miners along with their families and history lining main street. The views of the snowy mountains here and the nearby Sierra Buttes are like no other!

As early as 1849 the buttes and rocky outcrops were placer mined here in Johnsville while the nearby Eureka vein was discovered by 1851. The town was named after William Johns in 1876 around the same time it was formed whom was the manager of the Plumas-Eureka Mine which I also explored after exploring Johnsville so I could put two and two together. When I visit ghost towns I try to be as thorough as I possibly can in hopes of not only connecting the dots but getting a feel for the history. Johnsville was nearly split in areas the one area would be the mining district which in 1959 became the Pluma's-Eureka State Park while the other area is what you see throughout this website addition.

What really hurt the Johnsville area is that it had been plagued by a series of fires such fires often damaged homes, businesses and often forced people to leave the area. Nobody even knows how much the value was of the entire out from the district in gold mined but some estimate it to be between ten to twenty million. In Johnsville's earlier days folks came up here to snowshoe and ski at the resort. Not so much anymore things have quieted down so those that visit here either visit for the areas history or to hike and camp. When the Eureka Quartz vein had been discovered it brought an influx of miners to the area soon many of them filed for claims. Not only did they discovered gold in the rocky cliffs of the buttes but many of the local creeks had placer gold to be panned. Such mining around Johnsville transpired into the early 1900's. While mining came to nearly a halt in the early 1900's a revitalization effort occurred from WWI until around 1943 but it was very miniscule compared to the days when high grade ore was being brought out of the mines around the clock.

The Johnsville Historical Society was created during the summer of 1983 to preserve the architectural wonders found in Johnsville perhaps house some artifacts even documents from the towns boom. The historical society was the old St. John's Church built in 1899 for the townsfolk who worshipped and even community events. Today the church has been transformed into a place of preservation and history. Behind the church is a lovely cemetery I would say their is roughly 80 to 100 graves however many of the burials go unmarked hence the large open spaces found through this parcel surrounded by lush forest. Their are many Cyrillic markings and Serbian epitaphs found here many of them were recently translated. As far as I know the first burial that transpired here took place 1883 and the last known burial due to death occurred in 2001.

Johnsville is in the 1st Senate and Assembly Districts for the state legislature while federally it is in California's 1st Congressional District. Their also is a notable baseball player associated with Johnsville known as George Quellich. He was born in Johnsville February of 1906 and passed in 1958 playing for the Detroit Tigers in 1931. He batted and had thrown right-handed and is a member of the International League Hall Of Fame. Not many folks have ever even heard of this place to me its a world away from a world nestled in the mountains full of nature and scenic beauty. Their are no stoplights, malls and the town does not even have a police department. Back in the day when the town was bustling the town offered everything to its residents but when fires occurred people moved on and some businesses were simply not rebuilt.

One of those businesses that has survived though is a structure over 100 years ago called The Iron Door which was established as a restaurant. I have not eaten there but I heard the food is really great so if I happen to pass by here id love to go so I could enjoy the old pine wood flooring and pictures that depict the towns heyday. I heard that their tender Beef, Seafood, Lobster Tails, Pasta and German Schnitzel are some of their best dishes. The Iron Door has been owned previously by multiple people who all have reported the ghost of a little girl who others speculate is Macel Moriary who died at the age of 10 from Rheumatic Fever. She had eight other siblings living in a small red house just across from the Plumas Eureka State Park Museum another location we have also visited. Not sure why she is so attached this the Iron Door but at one time it was in 1906 a Post Office and General Store so maybe she just enjoys being around people. In 1961 it was altered into a restaurant whom had five different owners all reporting experiences with Macel's ghost.

I am sure that their are quite a few other ghost sightings and happenings in Johnsville besides Macel depends on who you talk to. Generally in the summer months as many as 75 folks may live up here while during the winter maybe 30 at most if that I heard sometimes less then 12. Winters in Johnsville are harsh you can almost count on it snowing daily up here being that the town resides just below the monolithic Eureka Peak and the Sierra Buttes which stay snow covered most of the year. At one time in the towns mining days you had about 400 miners living up here most of them were single men therefore many of them did not have families or kids. Despite that factor some miners did bring their families here and life was harsh. More then often it was the children who became victims of epidemics and often would die in freakish accidents.

In a sense you can say that Jamison City, Eureka Mine Camp and Johnsville all are connected to one another separated only by a mile if that apart. But Jamison City is long gone and the Eureka Plumas Mine Camps stamps are no longer crushing the ore thus the only surviving champion of this once booming mining district that have survived is Johnsville. The entire town is one giant living museum  where local folks have done everything in their power to preserve what is left. While this is no Virginia City it is one of the many historical towns that survived the depletion of the mines, fires, epidemics and the elements here out west. Often people only associate ghost towns with the desert but very few forget their are also many boom towns that became ghost towns high up in the Sierras deep in today's national forest that often do not get much recognition because people do not know about their existence. Groups like ours help put these places on the map which also brings in money to these towns so they can continue to preserve them for years to come so that your children's children can enjoy them just as we did! Johnsville is a quaint haunting beautiful little place nestled in the forest and mountains its hard to believe at one time this was a bustling place while its all gone its easy to imagine what once was.
