This is a rock-lined disk-form depression in the ground, used in the last century to grind ore before separating out gold or silver. The forest service sign describing it attributes it to "early Mexicans," which is perhaps something of an exaggeration; the Aztecs, Toltecs and Mayas had nothing to do with this particular historical site, and even European-derived Mexicans had been around for about three and a half centuries when this was built. If you want to see a (somewhat larger) arrastra in action, rent the film Conan the Barbarian; the device on which Arnold Schwarzenegger is doing the work of six mules early in the film is an arrastra.

This Arrastra is found on your trek up to Lake Winnemucca it was built in the 1800s as mining in this region of the sierras was very abundant and various miners had their own way of crushing the ore. This method would be one of many that came to the area while others built shafts or did hydraulic mining.

Snowshoe Thompson (1827-1876) was the nickname for the Norwegian-American Jon Torsteinson-Rue who is considered the father of California skiing. At the age of ten, Thompson immigrated to the United States with his family.

Between 1856 and 1876, he delivered mail between Placerville in California and towns in in Nevada. He delivered the first silver ore to be mined from the Comstock Lode in Virginia City. Despite his twenty years of service, he was never paid for delivering the mail.

Thompson did not use the snowshoes that are native to North America. Instead he used ten-foot skis and a single sturdy pole generally held in both hands at once. He learned this version of cross-country skiing in his native Norway.

Thompson typically made the eastward trip in three days, and the return trip in two days. He carried no blanket and no gun. He claimed he was never lost, not even in blizzards.

C monuments (also called C-blocks) were used to mark the right-of-way for California highways in the earlier days of establishing highway corridors in California. These blocks are generally not used in modern highway construction, but remnant blocks remain in place, especially on long-standing alignments of state highway.

In my video I thought this C block was a grave marker my mistake until I researched it further no less historic and a nice find at nearly 8'!

On this spot, which marks the summit of the Kit Carson Pass (8,600 feet elevation), stood what's known as the Kit Carson Tree on which the famous scout Kit Carson inscribed his name in 1844 when he guided the then Captain John C. Fremont, head of a government exploring expedition, over the Sierra Nevada.

On February 20, 1844, Fremont and Carson reached Kit Carson Pass where they looked out across the magnificent panorama of snowy ridges and towering peaks intercepted by deep canyons. They saw "a shining line of water directing its course towards another, a broader and larger sheet," which they believed to be the Sacramento River meeting the San Francisco Bay. After carving his name and the date in a tree, Carson and Fremont continued their journey, crossing the divide between West Carson Canyon and the American River, creating what would later be named Kit Carson Pass.

The original inscription was cut from the tree in 1888 and is now in Sutter's Fort, Sacramento. The marker is located at the parking area of the Kit Carson Monument above Red Lake. Also visit the Memorial to Pioneer Odd Fellows nearby.

During his expeditions in the Sierra Nevada, Frémont also became the first American to see Lake Tahoe. Carson later played a minor role in California's Bear Flag Revolt during the 1846–1848 Mexican-American War.

Alpine County

High in the Sierra Nevada along the eastern edge of California, Alpine County is sparsely populated. In 1844, John C. Fremont’s expedition, accompanied by Kit Carson, passed through the area and over today’s Carson Pass. The Overland Emigrant Trail passed through this county, and is marked today by yellow painted iron markers and plaques.

Historical Landmarks are eligible for registration if they meet at least one of the following criteria:

1) Is the first, last, only, or most significant of its type in the state or within a large geographic region

2) Is associated with an individual or group having a profound influence on the history of California

3) Is a prototype of, or an outstanding example of, a period, style, architectural movement or construction or is one of the more notable works or the best surviving work in a region of a pioneer architect, designer or master builder

California’s Landmark Program began in the late 1800s with the formation of the Landmarks Club and the California Historical Landmarks League. In 1931, the program became official when legislation charged the Department of Natural Resources—and later the California State Chamber of Commerce—with registering and marking buildings of historical interest or landmarks.

In 1948, Governor Earl Warren created the California Historical Landmarks Advisory Committee to increase the integrity and credibility of the program. Finally, this committee was changed to the California Historical Resources Commission in 1974. Information about registered landmarks numbered 770 onward is kept in the California Register of Historical Resources authoritative guide. Landmarks numbered 669 and below were registered prior to establishing specific standards, and may be added to the California Register when criteria for evaluating the properties are adopted.

I had recently read an article that states the inscription found here is NOT entirely true. At the time Fremon and Carson came through this area it was buried under snow thus so were the trees. It is believe that in the 1850's Kit Carson came back to this area to carve his name into the tree during the warmer seasons. The fact that he did carve his name into the tree is factual but by this time other emigrants and pioneers were already traversing this region. This monument you see below is a replica taken in 1888 to preserve the inscription and as some of you are aware the Carson pass was named after Kit Carson. Just as the Carson Valley was as well which is your gateway leading into the pass and higher sierras!

An old stone wall may have been built by early pioneers which ranched in the area or the forestry possibly but were not 100 percent sure. However it still was a nice little find and left things to the imagination.

Remnants of the old sleuth or levi that once sustained the waters of Lake Winnemucca. I am sure that due to erosion, forces of nature and overflowing waters that it eventually was washed down creek. However this iron bar is all that remains of its existence a piece of history reminding us of what once was.
