 Dutch Flat California was founded by two German brothers named Joseph and Charles Dornbach in 1851.  To the south of the town they founded was a mining camp of 2000 men called Green Valley where the brothers first arrived and worked.  Across from the nearby Bear River was another camp called Little York and to the west a trading post called Cold Springs.

All these camps were supplied by mule trains that ran from Illnoistown which today is known as Colfax. The muleskinners referred to the Dornbach brothers camp as "Dutch Charlie's Flat" hence the towns name was born.  When the miners flocked to the area their were two kinds of emigrants the Germans and Chinese which were heavily involved with mining along the outskirts of town. A pioneer cemetery would be erected for the German pioneers just above town called Dutch Flat German Cemetery.

The town was plagued over the years by storms, fires, disease and even commercialism. However it has managed to survive and this cemetery is today plays a huge factor in remembering the brave Germans who first came to this area and see the beauty in the land where they made it their permanent resting place.

The Germans were hard workers but they also mistreated the Chinese miners even burning part of Chinatown down to scare them away from mining operations. Nearby even the Dutch Flat Chinese Cemetery was forced into segregation erected in a pine forest across an old wagon road that divided both burial grounds.

 Not every interment here is innocent but most of them were the original builders and miners of Dutch Flat the true pioneers who braved this mountainous wilderness. Today the town resides in the sierras foothills with some remnants of the past including this burial ground to remind us of what was.
