Many of the pioneers who lived here worked for the railroad as the town sprang up and people begin to settle here. Today Crystal Peak is gone all that really remains of those brave pioneers is the cemetery and what is know today as the small rural town of Verdi. This was a small investigation but no less every location I do has to count for something. I never know what I might find sometimes we get apparitions other times EVP and sometimes its straight up something else. This was our first investigation of the new year it was not major but in my opinion this is a unique cemetery one that most have truly forgotten. I had a big day planned ahead of us sometimes when I do paranormal investigations I also try to do fun things in between them with my family. They are not as big into the paranormal as me but the less dangerous projects that I put forth I allow them to get involved therefore I try to also show them a lighter side to things. Before the big investigation we went to see the new Star Wars which I thought was pretty kick ass in 3D. I felt like I was in an X-wing fighter lol. Episode VII was really great but I do think they could have done just a little better with the villains. But as a kid I grew up watching Star Wars wanting the toys and pretending I was Luke Skywalker lol. Who didn't right? I will not give away any spoilers but if you have not seen the movie its worth delving into if your a fan like me. I wanted to take a photo of me with the poster but guess what? The movie theater up in Reno did not have a poster for the movie so I was a bit bummed. I went after the show to get some coffee and then we went to lunch. I had a nice fish fry with a crab cake, shrimp and a few other types of seafood. As most of you know I love my sea food mmmmmm especially after a good movie lol. It was pretty chilly out we just had gotten snow so mountains and the city had powder on the ground therefore I was not even sure what the cemetery would look like. The cemetery is about a half hour north of Reno in a very rural small town nestled in the mountains. As a matter in fact some of the peaks are so tall that one can see why there would be more snow here then in the valleys or nearby cities. When I arrived in Verdi there was not a soul in sight as this is a small town to begin with but no less it had an abandoned feeling to it even though there are a few stores and homes nestled back in this valley. The railroad comes through town so does the Truckee River which the town relied on back in the day. Originally a man built a bridge here in the mid 1800's and once people started to cross it they decided to form a stage stop and town here. I drove through town I wanted to see what was all left and I found this old abandoned saloon as well as casino. It was made of cobble stone walls, wood and brick windows boarded up with these arches and tunnels. The place was pretty cool and I wanted to hop the fence to explore it unfortunately it had an electric fence to keep people out. I felt a little disheartened by this being an urban explorer anything that is abandoned I love to photograph and look at. But I understand folks do stupid shit like vandalize or get hurt then places like this become fortified and others ruin it for guys like me. If you go downtown you can clearly see there are a few remnants of the past but not much like for example an old wagon from back in the towns hey day but its not extensive. Most of the homes here are new and any of signs of the original town just a few miles away no longer exist. Verdi has taken its place although quaint the cemetery is its greatest relic. There was allot of snow up in Verdi but its a beautiful best kept secret of Nevada with allot of forest, hills, cliffs embedded into tall peaks with the river coming through the middle of town. I pulled up to the cemetery and the snow as about a foot deep. There is a wrought iron gate or overhang at the cemeteries entrance but for the most part a chain link fence surrounds the property. There are nearly 300 interments here but only about 50 graves stand which means that their are allot of unmarked graves here. Most of the interments are that of children believe me times were rough back in the day kids died of illness, accidents and the elements it was very tragic. Despite the snow many of the graves were very visible now I cant say there were not flat stones on the ground buried under snow but for the most part you had allot of big open spaces where graves should be. There was a few wood and wrought iron plots but the fencing was down. There is an area to the SW where supposedly the Chinese are buried but every one of those railroad workers graves is missing. Towards the back of the cemetery where brush and trees grow is supposedly many Native Americans who supposedly were burying their dead before the white man encroached on this land in the mid. 1800's. I seen a small angel statue, wooden cross that was hand carved and even a clear box that had flowers in it. While other interments just had a boulder with a plaque on them. The oldest or historical section of the graveyard is in the very center next to a flag pole. The oldest section has a couple enclosures with some graves that date back to the 1800's. Towards the western edge of the cemetery were all the newer burials and someone even buried there dog next to them. Towards the NE corner near a house actually I found a couple lone graves they were quite old of a husband and wife. It was just very spread out and its not even a matter of vandalism but rather the graves are just not substantially around enough to know where everyone is buried. Towards the very back where the woods become more dense I found a few lone graves overgrown or just not kept up. It was starting to get dark out Crystal Peak looms over the cemetery as a matter in fact if you stand at the front gate and look straight ahead you can see this peak overshadowing the entire graveyard. Between the scenery and the fact that this is a historical remnant of the past my day was nearly complete. Well more so since I had gotten some really strong EMF Gauss Readings towards the back of the cemetery where most of the unmarked burials were at. The readings I was getting were over a 10 my meter only goes to level 10 so you tell me! There is nothing here but graves but certain locations were a hit which means there probably is some level of unseen energy that exist within its fences no doubt! I did burn a joint here it was cold but the kids and I had a snowball fight. My older son hates to lose he says I am old and am not capable of keeping up with him. Therefore after he lost to the snowball fight he got pissy and hit me in the head with a piece of ice teenagers you gotta love them!!! Around the same time I had to deal with some perv who decided to drive slow past us back n forth and eventually park a little ways away staring at us. The moment I started approaching this person they peeled off I cant stand creepers and nosy people. The cemetery is meant to be visited and enjoyed it kind of today is like a park but with anything one must be careful there are creepers even here apparently! After we wrapped up the investigation I stopped at the Sasquatch Tavern to have me a brew how could I not? I had happened to drive around Verdi a little thought maybe I could find something else to explore then low and behold I reached the gates of Heaven standing in front of the Sasquatch Tavern lol. I knew I would find ghosts on this expedition but to find bigfoot too WOW! lol every man needs a beer after hiking through the snow a couple hours and dealing with to rowdy teens who cant wait to go play at the arcade right after!!! After my ale I took the kids about three miles up the road to a place called Boomtown they have this massive fun center. The fun center has rides, games, simulations and tons of other cool stuff that kids like. Oh man we played basketball, drove virtual snow mobiles, hit up tons of arcade games and won tons of tickets. As a matter in fact they gave us an extra 20 dollars in arcade tokens for buying a game card. I won an alien key chain and the boys had gotten a ton of skittles we had a couple thousand tickets. All in all it was a fun day there is nothing wrong with trying to make a day of it when your paranormal investigating. I never know what might appear in my pictures or my EVP till I study it further when I get home so its very exciting each and every time I go out seeking haunts. I am very relaxed in my work one minute I can be doing historical research chasing them ghost next I am having an ale and hiking in the snow later in the evening. If you cant have fun doing what you do why do it at all right? I believe that Crystal Peak Cemetery is haunted I think that its quite strange that a majority of the graves are gone or names are lost to history. Sure the elements back here are bad many of the graves were not in the best of condition but we must do what we can to remember people, places and things so that is what ill be bringing to our viewers is a way to honor these people who played a huge role in Nevada's early railroading history! Its a nice cemetery its more then just a cemetery its part of a once booming towns history now all gone like most of the ghost towns in Nevada where only the people who are buried tell a story about the life they endured braving the frontier! It was a good start to a new year but you have not seen anything yet I have some surprises in my hat some locations that will blow you out of the water guaranteed!!! Lord Rick PGS Founder |
| The cemetery has an unusual amount of high Gauss EMF readings. I am not sure why this is if its attributed to it being haunted or if it has something to do with power lines which connect to some of the residential homes in the area. Strangely though most of the EMF readings I captured were in two unmarked burial grounds one was Chinese the other is those who died working on the railroad. Most of those interments are lost to history due to vandals or rather they just did not give them a gravestone back in the day. Therefore the areas that I took readings at had no readings and were very far away from any power source as you can see in the photos below. Areas with high readings also had given me a few really stellar EVP's which further substantiates my case that the cemetery could be haunted considering its one of the last remaining historic sites left behind from the old Crystal Peak Settlement. |
