The claim to the Chollar Mine would be filed in 1859 by a Billy Chollar which in its early years was about 1,400' in length and its side shafts ran about 400' wide. The mine would become one of Virginia Cities top leading silver producers and finished fifth in the Comstock Lode in regards to profits. Total production from about 1859 till 1920 was about 17 million which in today's times would have been worth triple if not more since the value of gold and silver has gone up quite considerably.

Near the Chollar was also the Potosi mine which was roughly the same size and length therefore they ended up hitting a vein that actually was in the Chollar Mine accidentally in 1861. This led to a four year lawsuit which ended up favoring the Chollar Mine. A short time after the Potosi dipped into the Chollar it was the Chollar that reached into the Potosi thus each mine owner put suits against one another. It would turn out to be one of the costliest litigation cases in the Comstock. As a matter in fact 1.3 million dollars would be spent fighting these cases. At times arguments often led to violence among some of the miners. Chollars men worked around the clock at great lengths to procure the silver before other companies had gotten to it so tensions were high!

After the four year suit Chollar became victorious the two companies ended up merging in 1865 thus the name would be changed to the Chollar-Potosi Mining Company and became the first mine to generate its own electrical power. After 1920 the mine seen very little use and by 1963 it was used strictly for tours. Most of the mine today is collapsed and inaccessible minus a four hundred foot tunnel.  Today you can see square set timbering, silver ore, rock drills and many rusty gems. Their also once was a massive mill built on site in 1887 known as the Nevada Mill which would process vast amounts of low grade ore taken out of the Chollar Mine and was one of the last mills to use the Washoe Pan process method.

To keep an eye on his mine Chollar built a mansion nearby which was also used as the mining office. Most mine owners used their mining office for administration but they would also store their bullion in a vault right on site. The mansion eventually would be dismantled in 1870 and they would rebuilt it at its current location on D Street to make way for the mines pumping station. Also by relocating the mining office it would allow Chollar to look down onto his mine to keep an eye on things and make sure his men were being productive. The mansion a historic Victorian Italianate home was built in 1861 and today is on the National Register Of Historic Places since 1993. It was designed by N.J. Coleman for Billy Chollar and while today its no longer the mining office it was in 1993 a bed and breakfast inn later becoming a more permanent residence.

Cave-ins, freak accidents and even explosions were responsible for killing quite a few miners during the Chollars operation. Despite the deaths the Chollar Mine continued to operate but it did not make it any less safe. On October 25th 1864 Mr. Joseph Rassette one of the companies Trustees and proprietors of the Rassette House in San Francisco life was claimed. The cage fell causing him to meet an untimely demise killing him instantly when he fell 50'. In 1867 a miner named Patrick Price was killed in a cave in as he was crushed to death by thousands of pounds of rocks. I also read that possibly some miners were electrocuted here because the wires had no insulation on them and Chollar was trying to take shortcuts by saving money in 1861. Often when mine owners tried to save money it led to unsafe conditions and the miners here were already working 15 to 20 hour days so they probably could not even see straight at times let alone think about their own safety.

Today numerous people including the mines owner claim the mine is haunted by the miners who were killed during the Chollars boom years. Folks have reporting seeing apparitions of miners and hearing disembodied voices others have shared accounts of being touched by unseen forces or feeling watched as they pass through the old original central shaft. Over the years quite a few folks have captured EVP's so we already know its haunted however since we have spent years compiling many locations in Virginia City that we explored, preserved or investigated the Chollar was one of the last on the list so for us this marks a huge milestone although we still have more work to do. Wherever you find history your going to also find ghosts that is just a fact! The Chollar is one of the oldest mines to be established in the area dating back to the beginning of the lode!

Not to far away from the Chollar Mine is also the Savage Mine which is the site of the Comstock Gold Mill. Also if you stand at the Chollar Mines entrance you can look below the hill at the Virginia & Truckee Railyard. If you look directly across from the Chollar Mines entrance you will see just across the way on the side of the mountain a massive dump pile and mill ruins which are remnants of the Combination Shaft. The shaft was sunk in 1875 when the owners of the Chollar-Potosi, Hale & Norcross and the Savage Mines combined their efforts to sink a massive deep shaft to explore the Comstock Lode at much greater depths. This shaft would be the deepest shaft ever sunk in the Comstock approximately 3,250' while other old timers in Virginia City told me 3,800'. Problem was that the deeper then sunk the shaft the lower the grade the ore was which proved less then profitable.

By the 1880's the Combination was consistently flooding and the two Cornish pumps that pumped out five million gallons per day of water could not keep up anymore with the water seeping on in. Their was also 130 degree geothermal energy which made it very hard for any of the miners to stay down their to long as a matter in fact after about ten minutes most miners were ready to come back up because of stomach cramps and heat exhaustion. In 1886 the pumps were shut down and within 36 hours the water had risen to the 2,400 level which seeped into the lower levels of the Chollar-Potosi, Savage and Hale & Norcross Mines. Very little profit was made since it cost over seven million to sink the shaft and high expenses to run the pumps it was a very spendy venture.

When I hiked on the Comstock Trail I was able to climb around the Combination Shaft and its mill ruins. Today the shaft looks like a pit to hell and I have read that over the years their were some deadly accidents because of folks who got to close to the pit to hell. In more recent times they have put fencing over the deep shaft to present further accidental deaths but still folks continue play around the shaft like its some jungle gym. So if you decide you want to hike on out to it please remember to exercise caution. This shaft is very deep and more then likely today is still filled with water and debris for thousands of feet below Virginia City. Its nothing to mess with unless you are okay with becoming another ghosts to add to the depths below.

All in all the architecture of the mansion and visiting with all the artifacts which can be found scattered around the mine entrance make it for a fascinating exploration. Honestly, its amazing that so much is left behind or that the mine itself is still in the shape that its in considering its tragic history. Many of the mines that we have explored or visited were once connected thanks to the Sutro Tunnel and nearly every one of those mines below the lode had some sort of death(s). While my first exploration did not reveal much their is no greater feeling for me then to be a part of the history that surrounds the locations we visit. Its never about just ghost with our group but rather about the history which may be in relation to why the ghost are there or who they may have been. The entire area surrounding the mine is fascinating but also all the other nearby mansions and mines which led to the cities silver boom.

When you browse this addition on our site keep in mind it is a reflection of me. While most people might celebrate their birthdays in other ways the gift I wanted was to be up in Virginia City having a good time with my family and do what I do best which is explore the wild west. If your expected to see extreme paranormal your missing the beat that is not what this addition is about but rather history, love, family, good times and great exploring. I seek to inspire others but also for others to celebrate with us so this addition is a compilation of my Memorial Day Birthday Bash which lasted from sunup till sundown and I get to share it with all of you. I spent years desiring to bring our viewers this location but I wanted to do it with style and meaning. Everything I do I do it for all of you because we want our viewers to be part of something more then just a few photos on the web but rather to embrace the journey.
