Bodie California
Cursed In Life Now In Death

By Lord Rick

As the founder of The Paranormal & Ghost Society over my years I have been to some pretty intense paranormal locations. What makes a place paranormal? Well it could be that a location has suffered from a very tragic history or maybe the fact that certain places were just never meant to be.

When I first opened up our doors over a decade ago I lived back east in Buffalo NY which ghost towns such as Bodie were really unheard of. Little did I know that my 1000th investigation would transpire here but I had my eyes on this historical strange ghost town for many years. Now today I live 70 miles away from it and have the honor to enjoy its haunted history.

My interest with Bodie goes beyond its ghost as I have taken interest over the past few years about rumors of it being cursed. Although I believe in allot of things I am skeptical of curses because most of the time people are looking for someone to blame for their downfalls in life. The curse ranges all the way from anyone taking anything out of the town to those who lived in Bodie meeting a tragic end back in its heyday.

Bodie was a place of sin it was said to be the wildest town in the west as at one time you had your choice of Opium Houses, Saloons and Bordellos. Death was a regular occurrence sadly people were murdered, robbed, shot and victims of outlaws who rode on into town looking for trouble. Prostitution was not uncommon nor was seeing an Opium house where the devious spent much of their time at. Although I do not think Opium is a sin out of all the drugs it probably is one of the safest and most relaxing. However despite all the saloons, opium and entertaining women the towns bells rang regularly when death occurred. Some residents moved to Bodie to strike it rich while sadly those more then often never made it out of here.

I have to say there is allot of negative occurrences from my research that surrounds the town. Some of them are truly tragic and they even sadden me. The town of Bodie was a place with little laws and control. It was not ran by the law but the people which gives you an idea of what anarchy looked like in the Nineteenth century. Today we see anarchy in countries like Syria where residents are being murdered daily for demanding democracy.

Bodie had no democracy it was a town that grew from 20 prospectors to thousands all within a year. It was chaotic metropolis with hundreds of buildings. Only 5 percent of them exist today out of the couple thousand that once stood in this valley that you see in many of our photos today. Perhaps the town grew to quickly thus it brought in allot of transients some who decided to take advantage of robbing the town as mining brought in over $100 million in gold.

As a paranormal investigator it was quite easy for me to observe strange happenings throughout the town. During our first investigation we witnessed two apparitions. We collected numerous EVP's and smelled food at some of the abandoned houses. In my opinion Bodie has never died its very much alive by the ghost that continue to haunt it. Maybe the curse is the fact that some of its residents came here to build a life and tragically theirs ended. Some residents who lived here felt they were cursed the moment they migrated to this region as Bodie was known for having some pretty bad men.

Wouldn't you feel cursed if you had no choice but to move to a town known for its outlaws and sinful deeds? To maybe an outlaw it was the sin that attracted them but to the average hardworking families who worked the mines or operated a business Bodie became a permanent place for them to live amidst all the death and chaos. Some folks dreaded living here while others especially children felt it was a curse. Its kind of like raising a family and telling them your moving to the hood in the big city. Bodie was a metropolis one that would eventually grow from 12,000 residents to none only for its ghost to continue to haunt its remnants.

I can tell our viewers first hand that Bodie is one of the more haunted ghost towns I been too and trust me I have investigated quite a few here out west. Most ghost towns are just empty mere shells of what they use to be at one time. I was perplexed with the fact that during the day Bodie seemed to be quite active when it came down to its paranormal activity. Over the years I have also learned to work during the day hours investigating haunting's and found that I have just as much success ghostbusting as I would at night. People sometimes think that ghosts will only haunt a place after sun down and well that is not the case with Bodie. EVP's and even ghostly sightings near some of the more well known landmarks in town tell us that this is a city of the dead cursed or not they ghost here never rest.

The town itself had around 65 saloons so fighting and murder were a typical happening. Eventually when the Methodist church came to be a Rev. Warrington concluded that "Bodie is a sea of sin" based on the greed, murders, drugs, drinking and lust which took place constantly. Even the married men cheated on their wives of course having a mistress is not at all uncommon today it certainly existed even more so in Bodie considering its population.

The most famous haunting's perhaps haunted house is the J.S Cain residence. This is a man who operated a timber company which brought most of the wood on into the town as it was hauled over Mono lake. You have to understand that most of Bodie is built out of wood as opposed to stone structures. When the town began to die this man bought most of the business and sites practically owning the town. Imagine owning your own town and all its ghost? Its actually quite intriguing as I wonder what this man had seen over the years as the town began its decline.

Anyhow the story goes on to say that Jim Cain hired a Chinese servant who cared for his home. Sadly she was fired as rumors around town spread that she was Cain's mistress thus she was never able to find work as nobody would hire her. Due to this experience the maid killed herself and is often quite seen. When I say seen visitors see a woman peering out the window while others have awoken in the home to find a heavy set lady watching them.

However the home has also very other odd experiences whether they are connected to the maid or not we can only speculate. The sound of a music box is often heard from one of them bedrooms while others have felt as if they were held down. Some have experience a feeling of suffocation while others have experienced fear. From what I have learned over the years in my research is that the presence of an apparition can cause all these experiences. This includes the doors that open and close within the home just as other odd noises that are heard. I know that when I passed a different home my kids and I heard something walking around and yet the home was locked down. There are ghost in Bodie and many of the structures are very haunted this includes the Cain House. Cain also had a son which we captured a photo of an apparition of an entity peering out the window from the upstairs. Perhaps the maid also haunts the sons home it would seem feasible considering the relation between the son and the father.

What makes the haunting's genunine within the town especially with the Cain House is the fact that rangers working here have had many paranormal experiences. An example of some of them especially in relation to the J.S. Cain house was that one time a Ranger was laying awake in bed on the first floor when he saw the door to his room open by itself then it became very cold. It is as if something or someone he couldn't see had come into the bedroom to lay next to him in bed as he felt heavy pressure on top of him. In this very same room another ranger and his wife had a similar circumstance only this time the wife of this ranger felt heavy pressure on top of her and she couldn't even move. Eventually she broke free falling to the ground. Just as a Rangers 15 year old daughter went to bed in the upstairs bedroom and as she was tucking herself into bed the lights went on by themselves. She must had gotten in and out of bed at least 6 times before becoming spooked only to run downstairs. These are the stories that can send chills down your spine. Even as a paranormal investigator as fascinating as I find it I can only imagine how fearful someone may be to experience being suffocated or pinned down by something they are unable to see. Although the maid is said to like children in spirit she has great resentment against adults perhaps because she had great hatred towards the Cain's. Nobody knows for sure if she was Jim Cain's mistress perhaps all she did was flirt and was accused by the wife of having an affair nobody knows for sure.

Another famous haunting is the "Mendocini" residence which is known to emanate the aroma of Italian foods even though its been locked down for the winter. Also sounds have been heard as if a dinner part or social event is taking place and the sounds of children laughing can be heard. It also appears that the children are heard outside the home playing. Mrs. Mendocini was a lady that loved to cook and take care of her children. I do believe that not all ghost stories come from tragedy but some perhaps happiness. This house was not a place of sin nor evil it was about parties, happiness, children laughing and a place for family.

Rangers have also had experiences here for example one of them made lasagna in the home but didn't have garlic to add to it. As he was eating the lasagna his eyes began to water and his sinuses were burning. He went outside to get some fresh air and when he came back inside he could smell garlic. It was as if the presence was offering some garlic and was looking after the rangers needs. Just as his second night in the home he heard what sounded like a party going on with various people conversing. He went outside to investigate heard nothing coming from any of the other homes yet when he came back inside the party became louder. He thanked Mrs. Mendocini for the party invitation but explained he had reading to do and the party seemed to end. Haunting's such as this I do not find as a curse but rather a blessing. So very few are able to have a true experience like this and the ones that do never forget it. This is why I am so devoted towards the paranormal as over the years being an investigator I have experienced many similar experiences and feel honored to have had them.

Then you have the Gregory House which most have reported seeing the ghost of an old woman rocking in her chair knitting an afghan blanket. Some have not seen the entity but have witnessed the rocker moving back and forth on its own. What makes Bodie so eerie is the fact that their is so many belongings that were left behind when the town was abandoned. Its not uncommon to peer into a window and see a rocker or clothing hanging up in a closet. One window I peered in their were coffins while another one revealed what appeared to be a human leg bone. Another house nearby called the Dechambeau House has also been the sighting of a woman looking out the window. Such sightings are not uncommon considering that the Garraty House and Wheaton & Hollis Hotel we witnessed apparitions of our own.

Bodie was a harsh town its a fact that people died including children. Sure the residents were plagued by flying bullets and winters that carried snow that buried the houses within town. Life was hard at every angle as diseases often hit the town just as senseless accidents occurred. One of the most tragic of all of them is the story of Little Evelyn who was only four years old. If you wish to see her grave it is the white marble angel found in the cemetery. Its probably the most visited grave site of all when it comes to Bodies cemetery which I tried to photograph on my first investigation only to be bombarded with threats by a park employee who was upset that I did not make it out of the town by the 3pm closing town. Quite sad that she would not give me a minute to say my piece to little Evelyn it truly is.

Anyhow Little Evelyn seemed to attach herself to a miner who would make his way to one of the mines whistling in the mornings on the way to work. She would hear him or be playing outside in the mornings and would follow behind him. After he made his way to work she would head back home however one morning she never did make it home. As the winds were strengthening the skies became dark and a snowstorm was on its way. The miner on the way to his work site told Evelyn to hurry home as the weather was meant to be taken seriously. When snow hit Bodie you didn't get inches but many feet at a time. The miner watched as Evelyn ran back to town or so he thought however when he was busy going about his chores Evelyn snuck back to where he was working silently. As the man was working the ore with a pick axe for Evelyn moved a little bit to close to it and ended up receiving a blow to the head which killed her instantly.

Everyone in town was devastated it was the towns people who erected the guardian angel headstone for her. Since the incident the ghost of Evelyn or often what people call the angel of Bodie have been haunting the cemetery and streets ever since. Some folks have seen her apparition more then often on the nights of a full moon or giggling near her grave site. Despite this tragic incident her ghost seems to be happy perhaps because she was so well loved. Their has even been the sighting of a ghostly man seen with Evelyn in the cemetery and them playing together. I know that the miner must have felt allot of guilt as he had nothing but love for this little girl. Perhaps that love is so strong they both share it in the afterlife so again maybe their is no curse but yet another story that brings some light to this once sinful town.

Not only are human apparitions seen in the town but also near the mines people have witnessed a mysterious white mule. I have to say the mining district is just creepy as cabins, large houses and machine parts lay scattered along the hillside. If their is a place to feel the lost souls who once worked these mines Bunker Hill would be it which overlooks the entire town below.

Many feel that the dearly departed have come together to protect what is left of the town. People have felt that if you even take as much as a pebble you are doomed to misfortune while others feel it was the rangers who started this rumor to help preserve the town site. I mean lets face it the entire town is one giant antique which is priceless all the way from the furniture to the belongings left behind. At one time vandals and thieves plagued the town especially in the 1970's when people use to camp up at Bodie where they showed a lack of appreciation for it by burning the objects they removed from various homes.

Nobody knows for sure if the ghost are guarding the town against thieves but so many people who have removed items from the town have sent them back due to a string of bad luck. I have read elsewhere that some people have taken many years ago objects from the town and have never had any bad luck at all. Perhaps the curse is a state of mind maybe people are so guilty from thieving the town that they create the misfortunes themselves. However within the museum one can view letters from people who have returned items to the park who wish to rid of the curse. Sometimes people wish to blame their misfortunes on the dearly departed however is karma really a curse or is it part of the circle of life? Afterall I am a true believer in universal energy such as doing good things will come back to you in the form of good just as if you commit sin that sin will come back to you. Perhaps those that stole from the town had only gotten what they deserved nothing more and nothing less. Afterall Bodie was cursed in life as it is today in death as its ghost seem to haunt every nook and cranny from my investigation of many of the sites that still exist today.

A local legend speaks about a little girl who moved to Bodie from San Francisco who wrote in her diary "Good, by God, I'm going to Bodie" while others have translated it as "Goodbye God, I'm going to Bodie". What did she mean by this? What she referring to her own demise or the fact that she was going to a town full of lawless citizens who lived in the shadows committing sinful deeds. Nobody really knows for sure except that if you were a child you feared this place.

When you put all of is this together you have no choice but to believe that the curse is still today well alive as it was in life and now in death. People came to this town to strike it rich many of them never made it out alive. This is factual consider their ghost still haunt certain houses and as many as 12 entities have been seen here. This just proves that the town today is still very much alive perhaps the spirits are restless due to a series of misfortunes that never should have happened.

For example in 1892 a fire broke out in the business district or rather the mile long Main Street at Mrs. Perry's Restaurant. Since Bodie was composed mainly of all wood the fire spread through town burning most of it down. Bodie had four fire departments despite this fact they were unable to save more then half of the town despite that incident the town managed to survive. Just as a few years later in 1899 the Standard Mill burnt to the ground but was rebuilt. It was the cyanide processing and electric power that kept the town alive some say as many as 500 men still worked the mines at the turn of the century.

In 1832 a younger boy was playing with some small wooden toys in an abandoned shack and apparently some matches. Within a few hours about %70 of the town was burnt down. So even though you see allot of photos from various sites keep in mind that Bodie had at one time a couple thousand structures today only a couple hundred exist. It almost seems as if the town was never meant to be between the murders, accidents, disease, fires and harsh weather. Maybe the town itself was never meant to be built period afterall the greed of mankind can also mean his own demise.

When someone died in Bodie the fire bell or church bell tolled the ages of the deceased and more then often it was heard throughout the town. This also goes with the fact that robberies, stage hold ups and street fights were nearly a daily occurrence. Although Bodie was a wild and exciting place it was a town for the bad men. Some of those bad men can be found in the local cemetery. Although the good often ended up in the cemetery so did the bad it was a lose lose situation for anyone who came to this town even though the mines brought in over 100 million dollars few lived to enjoy the riches.

Who was the bad man from Bodie? Historians say it was a man called Tom Adams others say it was Washoe Pete. Some say it was symbolic meaning bad men liked bad whiskey and bad climate which pretty much described Bodie to a tee. A place such as Bodie attracted men like this although the town had a jail it was such a large metropolis that it really was out of control. It would be like NYC having only one sheriff or small jail thus if that were the case thugs and criminals would run the city.

So perhaps the curse was not the land but the people itself as in life they are cursed in death never to find peace. I mean when you truly delve deeper into the towns history you realize that the towns name was even misspelled as it was supposedly named after a Waterman S. Body also known as William S. Bodey who discovered gold here in 1859. Some have said the towns name was spelled Bodie due to an illiterate sign painter while others felt that it was done deliberately so that its citizens could pronounce it correctly.
With that in mind mishaps in relation to the town had begun in the towns beginnings and today the mishaps continue even in the towns demise.

Their is an old story that has been passed around for many generations about Body and how the town was found. In 1859 their was a mining camp perhaps the first of its kind east of the sierras called Monoville. Generally the excitement of finding gold was amidst which often caused many miners to explore further out of curiosity to wander away in hopes of making their own discoveries. This how the term gold fever came into play because wherever their was gold their was a prospector trying to mine it. Body and a man called Black Taylor had decided to leave Monoville to search for their own claim when they found gold about 15 miles northeast of Monoville. Of course this area they mined the gold is known as the ghost town you see today and the industrial district that is scattered across bunker hill.

Towards the end of winter in March of 1860 Taylor and Body needed food supplies so they decided to journey on out to Monoville. Unfortunately when the men were heading back to their cabin with the fresh food supplies a blizzard came through as to where Body tripped falling into deep snow. Taylor lost Body/Bodey in the storm however made it back to his cabin changing into warmer clothing then went back out into the storm to find his friend. To no avail did Taylor find Body until May when the snow began to thaw. That is when Bill Body's bones were found along with his goods unfortunately the grieving Taylor had to bury his friend and when word got out of the discovery that same year the Body Mining District had been organized. Perhaps old Body's spirit will not rest maybe in some way shape or form he feels that his claim was stolen as in all do honesty he passed away before he could turn his claim into a profit. Even before Bodie became a town its original discoverer perished in a snow storm which tells you that one of the coldest and harshest locations in the country did not disappoint even its original founder. Perhaps the land is cursed from centuries of what a meteorologist would call the perfect storm which seems to occur every winter and has been known to taken lives time to time including the man who discovered gold here first. Maybe it is Body himself that has cursed this region as his own greed killed him thus that negativity has been passed down through generations. Perhaps Bodie's curse is the weather itself which involved in the summer a harsh hot desert and in the winter some of the coldest heaviest snowfall in the United States. Either way both are deadly combinations thus the town of Bodie perhaps should have never been built here to begin with!

Today Bodie sits in desolation although its well visited by Rangers, hikers, historians, ghosthunters, children, tourist and park employees have had many strange tales to share about the paranormal. While some will swear up and down its cursed we will allow you to decide it for yourselves which is what makes Bodie so fascinating. You never know what might lurk around the next corner or what you might see peering into a window pain covered in spider webs.  I have also heard of jewelry coming up missing here I know someone had told me if I see their bracelet in the cemetery to let them know. Strangely when I arrived home from Bodie Tammy was missing her necklace and I was missing my earing. Some might call it a curse knowing that the dearly departed may be taking treasures for themselves I just call it a greedy ghost!

We can only speculate that all the lust, greed and sin has led to a sinister energy that surround the town which perhaps has caused the curse to continue to grow into what it is today. Some locations are just like that a place that feels so sickly sinister that you know their is more to it then what you are told. Bodie holds many secrets of life and death. This is not a town for the weak or the weary it was indeed the wildest town in the west and today it sits abandoned with a story linked to every name most of them tragic where only its ghosts know of its true tales perhaps cursing those who are unlucky enough to give into the temptation of greed!
