The community which Whispering Pines Cemetery is located was called Beckwith in the 1800's. While some folks called the cemetery Whispering Pines most refer to it as Beckwourth Cemetery. The community was named for James P. Beckwourth who was an explorer who discovered Beckwourth Pass in 1851. Upon studying records the Beckwith post office had opened in 1870 and by 1932 it had changed its name to Beckwourth. The cemeteries first interments begin in 1862 and the last known burial to have taken place here was 2004 but that could have changed since then in recent times since this still is an active burial ground just rarily sees very little use because Beckwourth is a rather small town where one could blink and miss it entirely if you were not paying much attention. Back in the day lumber camps and sawmills were built along the Feather River and Grizzly Creek just across from the cemetery.

Beckwourth Pass is the lowest mountain pass in the Sierra Nevada mountain range at an elevation of about 5,221'. The pass is located on the eastern edge of the great sierra valley at Chilcoot and Vinton California.  The pass resides about 3 miles east of Portola and 25 miles NW of Reno Nevada. While roaming the cemetery just across the pass is the Feather River Route which was formly the old Western Pacific now Union Pacific Railroad. Route 70 for which the cemetery resides along was an alternative route between Sacramento California and Reno Nevada when interstate 80 and the Overland Route which crossed the Sierra Nevada at Donner Pass were impassable due to harsh winter storms and heavy snowfall. Beckwourth's pass was a much safer route to take if you were trying to cross the high sierras.

In 1850 James Beckwourth had discovered the pass developing the Beckwourth Trail from Truckee Meadows today known as Sparks/Reno Nevada thought the pass into California and on to Marysville. In the late summer of 1851 Beckwourth had led the first wagon train of settlers along the trail into Marysville and it was a success. Between 1851 and 1854 about 1,200 emigrants had used the trail. As a matter in fact the trail was used during the California Gold Rush of 1848 to 1855 mainly and continued to be used until the first trancontinental railroad was constructed which replaced wagon trains. The train could import or export goods along with passengers all at the same time and was much faster then trying to haul wagon trains loaded with goods through a wintry pass.

Betweeen 1895 and 1916 the pass was used by the Sierra Valley & Mohawk Railway which was a narrow guage and supposedly not far from the cemetery you can see the abandoned right-of-way which is visible to the south and eastern slope of the pass. Just up the road is another small settlement known as Chilcoot where in 1906 a Tunnel was constructed beneath the pass by the Western Pacific Railroad as part of its scenic Feather River Route. Today the railroad has ceased to exist and the line is now operated by the Union Pacific Railroad. On any given day one can see the trains barreling through the pass as they make their way through Beckwourth.

Many of the emigrants who traversed this pass ended up settling in nearby towns like Portola, Johnsville, Quincy, Jamison City, Beckwourth, Chilcoot, Vinton, Sierraville and Sierra City California. While this pass may have not been as rugged to navigate illness, elements and accidents were just a common occurrence for anybody trying to cross the Sierra Nevada's.  People did not always make it they died along the pass some ended up being buried in this very cemetery while others who were interred here lived in Beckwourth for the sole puprose of ranching and lumbering.  Interments begin just a short time after Beckwourth discovered his pass as folks begin to settle in the region. At the time when wagon trains came through this area they would have passed this cemetery a grim reminder that death could strike at anytime. The cemetery sits in a dense forest of pine trees on a hill across from an old historic cattle ranch and the train tracks where Union Pacific roars past this burial ground nearly on the hour all day every day. Beckwourth operated a trading post across from the cemetery where wagon trains would stop to barter for supplies on their trek through the sierras.

Who was James Pierson Beckwourth? Well when he was born his name was James Beckwith his friends called him Jim. He was an American mountain man, fur trader, scout, Crow Indian Chief, prospector, surveyor and explorer. As a matter in fact he was of mixed race (Crow Native American/Black) and was born into slavery in the state of Virginia. He was freed by his father and master who apprenteiced him to become a blacksmith. When he was young he came out to the American West first making connections with other fur traders in St. Louis Missourri. He lived with the Crow Nation Indians for many years trading and hunting for furs. Eventually he would go on to discover the Beckwourth Pass which during the gold rush years thousands of settlers poured into Central California utilizing this trail. Their is a book you can get called Chief of the Crow Nation of Indians which most historians consider the book to be nothing more then campfire lore which talks a bit about Beckwourths adventures throughout the west. When the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's occurred Beckwourth was a celebrated figure as an early African American Pioneer who built a life from himself from being a slave to a free man. You can often find that Beckwourth was a role model in many children liternature and textbooks.

At one time Beckwourth's pass was merely a Native American Route but James had improved it as it traversed Plumas, Butte and Yuba Counties. When Beckwourth led the first intact wagon train to the gold rush town of Marysville he demanded payment for improving the trail claiming he had an agreement with the city and its local merchants. The city failed to pay him because it suffered two fires and had extensive property damage to many of the buildings. Unfortunately Beckwourth could not sue for damages and the former mayor had lost not only the town but also state records therefore the council claimed there was no paper contract on record. Therefore Beckwourth did not get paid for his hard work so he he built a trading post across from the cemetery in Beckwourth which for many years was a lucrative venue.

In 1994 the U.S. Postal Service issued a 29 cent commemorative postage stamp which honored Beckwourth. In 1996 the city of Marysville renamed its largest park to Beckwourth Riverfront Park in recognition of the significant growth due to Beckwourth's Trail.  For a few years the city of Marysville held Beckwourths Frontier Days in October which at the time was the only living history festival in northern California. In Portola their is also the James Beckwourth Museum if you are interested in a more enriched history to go with some of the artfacts which surround Beckwourth's Pass during its early days when horseback and wagons were the only means of traveling.

This pioneer cemetery sits right along that pass named after the man who made it possible who was iconic to the African American population here out west. Beckwourth probably used this pass quite a few times so he would have passed by this cemetery since burials occurred as early as 1862 here besides the fact he could see the cemetery from his bedroom window. However, he is not buried here the cemetery was only named after the settlement that sprang up here and the man who discovered the pass. Back in 1866 James Beckwourth was guiding a military column to a Crow Band in Montana when he was complaining of severe headaches and was suffering from nosebleeds which was thought to be caused by hypertension. He had returned to the Crow Village where he died October 29th 1866 with an unstobbable nose bleed at the time. The biggest mistake that Beckwourth made was going back home instead of living peacefully in the sierras along his pass.

William Byers a personal friend and founder of the Rocky Mountain News claimed that the Crow Indians poisoned Beckwourth as the tribe felt they could no longer trust him because of his involvement in the Sand Creek Massacre however Byers at the time had no supporting evidence and the claim was speculation. Beckwourth per say was a direct cause of the massacre because he had led the military to the tribe which led to terrible events. James Beckwourth died in Denver Colorado Territory presently Denver Colorado after leading the military column. Beckwourth had been left to the elements elevated on a platform in the traditional funerary custom of the Crow Tribe at the Crow Indian Settlement Burial Ground in Laramie Wyoming where he was relocated too to be laid to rest for burial. Nobody knows for sure how Beckwourth died but he did get a Native Crow Tribal funeral thus they considered Jim a member of the tribe and he was honored by them. This leads me to believe that he was not murdered by the Crow but perhaps one of the soldiers in the party he led up to Montana who may have felt that Beckwourth was a traitor to the white man since he did technically live with the Crow for so many years as a chief. I believe Jim knew to much and may have witnessed certain solderies committing attrocities therefore someone had probably poisoned his food or drinks. Tensions were very high back in the 1860's many tribes were at war with the White Europeans therefore you were forced into picking a side even if you did not want to. Beckwourth chose the native Crow after all he was Crow himself sadly involved with being on both sides of the fence which ultimately led to his death!

The cemetery is a reminder of the legacy James Beckwourth left behind here out west. It serves as a burial ground for the ranchers and miners who came to the settlement of Beckwourth seeking lives for themselves. Surprisingly the cemetery is in very decent shape with very little desecration or vandalism. Some of the graves are not marked and the west side of the cemetery is much older then the east side. This is a true wild western cemetery which sits right along the old Beckwourth Emigrant Trail and old town site which boast some remnants of old wooden buildings which still stand today.

When early emigrants traversed the pass they had no choice but to see this cemetery as a grim reminder that you could be the next permanent guest if this wagon route through the sierras were to get the best of you. It was not uncommon for epidemics, outbreaks, accidents, elements and random deaths to occur while crossing the sierras. Even if you did not cross them small towns like Beckwourth often were hit with tragedies such as floods, fires and sickness. So the cemetery is just a reminder of how harsh life was in the wild west's early beginnings and those that braved it. Very little remains of this old town named after Jim Beckwourth except for its cemetery which contains the early pioneers who came here to mine, lumber and ranch making it a worthy historic site in relation to the town.
