The Nevada State Children's Home also known as Sunny Acres captivated me in 2011 when I first was visited the region and visited a few historical sites in Nevada's state capitol Carson City. Today the grounds of the Orphan Asylum are merely just that a park where others can play tennis, job, picnic under a tree or walk there dogs. However very few really understand how precious and historic in value the property is so we hope by bringing the Orphanage in a different light we can also help preserve this wonderful location.

The very first orphanage in NV was located in Virginia City of the Comstock Lode was operated by the Sisters Of Charity who also operated The Old St. Mary's Louise Hospital in 1867.  At that time their were allot of homeless children running around on the streets that is when legislature decided to take it upon themselves to take care of them or at least the states job to authorize a program to help them get a proper education as well as a safe haven.  With the amount of children growing homeless Ormsby County donated roughly 10 acres located on Fifth Street just east of Stewart less then a mile from downtown Carson City. Technically all the way up until about the mid 1900's the orphanage resided in rural Carson until the city boomed thanks to Lake Tahoe's and Reno's extreme growth.

The buildings the government constructed were state of the art as they built dormitories most of them Victorian and by October of 1870 the first child became a resident here. Keep in mind that their was allot of segregation most of the homeless Native American kids went to the Old Stewart Indian School just a couple miles from this very site. Both sites in my opinion are equally irreplaceable however the only difference is that most of the Indian School has many structures remaining while the grounds for the NV State Orphanage over the years have taken a hard hit when it came to demolishing its large dormitories including one that had a massive Cupola on top of it much like the Carson State Capitol Building and Bowers Mansion in the area.

The orphanage ran very well for nearly 30 years till a fire in 1902 nearly decimated everything including many of the large buildings that in itself were really architectural wonders. Many of the orphans were homeless after the fire some of them were even sent back on up to VC until a new Children's home could be rebuilt.  The government had this time around smartened up building many of the structures out of sandstone blocks which were quarried by the local prisoners of the State Prison. If you were to walk around the city you could see the same sandstone found in the Old Carson City Mint/Museum and The NV State Capitol Building downtown. The original cost to build the main dormitory in Carson was nearly 8k but the new home would cost 38k perhaps because stone masonry involved allot more work then building wood structures.  The new complex of buildings and sites would be finished by 1903 less then a year after the fire which was larger, fireproof and a suitable home for children.

I know for a fact that the children who lived on campus or at the orphanage were treated good they had warm beds, food and a staff who cared. I am not saying that bad things did not happen here. Lets face it when epidemics rolled through Carson City it claimed lives especially the youthful and elderly. We know that based on the fact that many Native Americans who attended the local boarding school in Carson perished because the Spanish Flu, Yellow Fever and other epidemics would be spread easily from one child to the next. So their is no doubt that some sadness does surround these grounds not all children made it to adulthood here most of them shared rooms. But they also went to church, attended schools and even worked on the farm which no longer exist but bordered the orphanage. Today all that is left of that farm is the massive cottonwood trees found growing along Roop Avenue.

The local townsfolk's were rather generous they would donate money tot he home so that the kids would have Christmas presents or give some of them a day at the movies. The kids would have even Santa Claus pay them a visit and when they were not busy with the holidays they certainly had plenty of activities to do. For example today one can see remnants of a hopscotch court, basketball hoops and even a baseball diamond which now has been consumed by grass.

In 1948 the orphanage was renamed to Sunny Acres rather then the NV State Orphans Asylum which gave the place a little cheer.  The 1940's and 50's were a time of change especially to the orphanage. For example the massive two story cupola and flagpole were removed along with the fireplaces because the buildings went through renovations so that they could receive central heating. This would not last long as major changes were coming to the entire property and believe me it would be transformed unfortunately for the worst considering today the grounds look nothing like the old orphanage.

In 1959 the State of Nevada voted to shut down the Children's Home but were in favor of building single-family cottages were the kids could live in a smaller more private family orientated setting. Do not get me wrong the cottages were still fairly large they just were not as large as the dormitories that stood here. However they were more like homes with each one having bathrooms all the way to bedrooms and even a kitchen. So it was a bit more intimate and personal for some of the orphans. At the time in the 1960's orphanages were becoming a past time as implementation of foster care and adoption came into play particularly 1963 at this location. They would name each cottage after a rail station found within this region perhaps to make it easier to dispatch staff. Although the orphanages were not entirely eradicated as even in the 1970's for a short time I was an orphan believe it or not who was temporarily living in an orphanage so this place does hold some meaning to me. Sometimes it breaks my heart but for the most part I can and still could relate as to what these children must had experienced because I did also! So for me this is not about ghosts or even a little urban exploration but rather closing my eyes picturing that I was in a time machine wondering what life must had been like here at one time.

The 1960's were a rough time in Carson City most of the buildings were torn down to make room for these cottages so make sure you take the tour to see some of them. Many of the old buildings had no place in downtown Carson City as modernization played a part. Their were plans to demolish the State Capitol building to replace it with modern offices but it never came to play. However other structures were not so lucky for example the Arlington Hotel and many other stone buildings were literally demolished to make room for newer structures. With the expanse of downtown Carson City the government seen the Sunny Acres property as more of an eye sore and I can see why when your downtown its very easy to sit at a cafe drinking coffee with other Senators and politicians. Most of them enjoy to get out of state just to come to Carson to vote on various laws.

In 1963 the entire Children's home was torn down with the exception of the old sandstone Gymnasium which still stands today and is one of the last remaining historic sandstone buildings left behind from the Orphanage. When it was abandoned on and off squatters took the property as their own so today what is left of the orphanage is heavily sealed up. Anyhow this is why most of our photography focuses on the Gym because it is the last link to the Children's Orphan Home and even today its still not safe from the wrecking ball so thus it is a historic landmark in my opinion.  I mean when you walk the grounds at the old orphanage you can clearly see the open areas where structures and buildings use to stand so parts of the grounds feel a bit desolate. Granted the large trees that grace the property still stand everything else is gone except the cottages built after they tore down the Children's Home and an old school across the street which now contains items from the Children Homes themselves.  The gym itself is a symbol of what was it survived fire, disgruntled residents and even politics yet it was left to stand which is probably what caught my eye to begin with when it comes to this location which is what makes it such an amazing place perhaps even forgotten by those who may have never done any research on the property.

At one time the Division of Child and Family Services was headquartered in the cottages strangely they seem to move around allot. The Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada has also used the cottages especially the old Gymnasium for recreation. When the new DCF and Boys & Girls club headquarters were build the grounds of Sunny Acres really no longer had any use.  Believe it or not the old Gymnasium even predates the fire of 1902 which means that in the 1800's the orphans used this building for recreational activities and sports especially in Carson's cold spells.  Its kind of ironic the long history of sports and how many children have laughed or played inside its walls.

So you have allot of history just not much of it remaining anymore which is truly disheartening and if everything gets demolished. We will be one of the very few websites who have made a record or historical case for the preservation of this site.  It really symbolizes that our State Capitol really cared allot about the homeless children but also how the masons as well as pioneers made well crafted structures such as the old gym. I think the more I learn about Nevada the more I understand how great of a state that is considering I am from NY an east coaster this is why I have grown to love the Silver State so much is that the attitude is different so is the scenery.

My Girlfriend of many years has told me she knows someone who lived in those cottages back in the 1960s so for some of you this might hit home or bring back some memories no less.  The more I talk about this place the more other Carson City locals tell me about it which never ceases to fascinate as much as strangely one of the cottages porch lights was on.  That is what makes the site so significant knowing that this orphange impacted so many lives still some of them today who may have lived to see the beautiful Victorian buildings the site once possessed.

Supposedly after DCFS left the cottages and some of the buildings all the way into the 1990's they stated that most of the structures were either falling apart or pathetic. For years now their has been debates on whether to demolish even the cottages perhaps even the gymnasium when in fact this should be a designated historic site or at least what is left should be preserved due these factors. I think people when they first find out about us they see us as a website dedicated towards finding the paranormal truth but were so much more then that. We try to educate the public on preservation and bring sites like this to light. It allows western modern schools to be educated with all the informative material we share on every location we visit as historical as it may be. Do I think that the children who may have never lived full lives haunt the grounds here? You bet!

I think their is allot of energy present on the grounds I remember talking to a friend of mine who actually knew a couple who ran for sometime the children's home he told me this was a happy place allot of good came from it and when it closed down he even seen it as a huge loss. But with modernization places like asylums, orphanages, children's homes and even boarding schools really became non-existent today with every few still standing. However after my original investigation and research my views have changed allot finding out this was not such a happy place. Some of the kids were abused physically others may have been abused sexually while the dorms were so tight that when an epidemic broke out its factual kids died from it. I talked to a few people who were orphans here every time they see this place they want to see it torn down so something went wrong here or took a bad turn along the lines no doubt now!

No matter the good times or tragic ones with history comes its fair share of ghosts and energies left behind from our past. Do I think that every child was given a fair shot here? No! I think some kids may have been abused not all but some just as I think some of these orphans eventually made it out of here to lead successful lives. I cannot wait for the chance to work with this place more especially when we commit to our second investigation which will take place at night it should be rather interesting no less! Try to keep in mind when you browse this case file keep in mind we tried to integrate positive things into this addition such as the nature that surrounds the cottages today and scenic views. Even some of our videos are rather comical because we wanted to bring the public something refreshing so that others could view this place in a whole new light. With the memories we created here we can only imagine the bonds the orphans created when they were first brought here and called this place home! Not much remains but a mere few memories of what once was imagine each night how many kids peered out their windows at the Sierras wondering when they would wander beyond the walls of the NV State Orphans Asylum.

A really great website that has over 190 comments mostly from orphans who resided here talk about some of their experiences. While some expressed happiness others stated that times were hard living here. For some of the folks its been decades while for others it is much more recent until the cottages were shut down for good and reopened to serve DCF and the department of Education nearby.
