The Hobart Reservoir resides at about an elevation of 7,650 feet within the Carson Range and above the state Capitol of Nevada Carson City. Its one of the crown jewels of the Carson Wilderness which is part of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest.  This area alone includes about 13,000 acres of back country of the Carson Range and that is just the Marlette/Hobart region or what is 53 kilometers.  The back country begins at Spooner Lake which eventually feeds into Franktown Creek thus the very famous Flume Trail at Marlette Lake and eventually to this destination. Marlette Lake and the Hobart were manmade as eventually they would be used to supply towns in the region with fresh water as snow melt was very heavy in the Sierras in the 1800's. Prior to that time period before the white man came here to lumber and mine the area it was a nomadic home to the Washoe Tribe for thousands of years where they used the lakes and creeks as a place to hunt or make there migratory track into Tahoe during the warmer months.

These reservoirs today more lake like had to be formed due to growing concerns within the Comstock Lode of  Virginia City and Gold Hill NV due to the mining and logging industry growing in the area. Most of the trees found here are third generation as in the 1800's many of them around the reservoirs were cut down at various sawmills which you can read about one of them further below. The trees were cut down to be used in the lumber for towns like Carson, Washoe and Virginia City. It would be cut then processed at the sawmills then sent further down the Carson Range via V Log Flume.  I was told a story about John Mackay taking deaths waterside once an owner of the Mackay Mansion's Curry Mine. Houses like this mansion were more then likely built using the wood found in this region. With the growth of also the mines which totaled hundreds of miles the wood also was needed to be used inside of them such as support beams for example.

Besides Timber you also had to have allot of water to supply these miners and to all the homes in these boomtowns therefore the Virginia Gold Hill Water Company would began putting together a water system.  The dams of the Hobart Reservoir and Marlette Lake could be logically increased considerably to withhold more water then it could be stored and used as municipal water.  The company would just have to come up with a way redirect some of the water for many miles to reach its final destination.

When rich Silver was first discovered in the area that is known as the Comstock there were many natural springs in the area which would be more then enough for the local miners and even the residents who came to these boom towns. Lets face it towns like
Virginia City and Gold Hil grew within twenty years combined you had over 20,000 residents for this time period it is what sparked the growth in the west particularly northern Nevada.  Most of the residents drank from the Springs others dug mines while some of those mines flooded therefore the water was used. Not sure if some of that water had mercury poisoning but no less a fresh water source would be needed one very pure. Many mills that process ore were built and these cities looked highly industrial therefore they used most of the water in steam boilers thus creating water shortages for the resents.

Due to this factor that is when the Virginia City and Gold Hill Water Company was formed in the region. It being the first non-mining incorporation in the
Comstock Lode.  The company new that water was short lets face it the wells only lasted so long once they ran dry families were suffering. They began to look elsewhere to divert water or the residents were looking at abandoning town like so many did throughout NV leaving ghost towns behind therefore the sierras was an option. The Sierras is full of lakes, streams, rivers and snow melt which has some of the freshest water in the world.

A new waterworks would go into effect as in 1872 surveying was done while Hermann Shussler a Swiss engineer who had did the blue prints for the water works of San Francisco was brought into this.  Once the design was completely pipeline began to be laid by June 11th of 1873 and the last pipe fitted on in July 25 just a little over a month later. This pipe was made of wrought iron with an 11" diameter and had a length of about 7 miles. Of course that may not seem like much in early railroading but these pipes had no choice but to succeed as failure could have rewritten history.  The pipes could bring on in 92,000 gallons per hours with 800lbs per square inch. The remnants and old rusty pipes of the water works can be found all over Marlette Lakes Flume Trail, Franktown Creek and the Hobart Reservoir.  I even heard there are other mill sites overgrown in the woods surrounding Hobart. These remnants are an important part of the past as without them what would have happened to Nevada's state capitol or even Virginia City Nevada?

The water would be forced through the pipe with allot of force and pressure. The water would actually be brought in by two large covered flumes to an inlet. From the inlet the water would run into the pipes eventually being delivered at the outlet end of the pipe into two large flumes at a distance of 12 miles. The first flow of actual water reached the boomtowns on August 1st, 1873 only a few days after completely. At the time it was the greatest pressurized water system in the world even better then Shussler's design of the Cherokee Flat water system. As they say an artist must outdo himself every time I feel this addition on our site has done that and the more you delve the more intriguing you are going to find this. At least for those who respect wild western culture understand that lumber and water were the two biggest obstacles that the early miners faced while one was overcome.

While lead was used to secure the pipe fittings in 1875 the water company added more pipe and then another upgrade in 1877. Instead of lead they welded the pipes together and additional flumes were constructed. Today  company is called the Marlette Lake Water Company however when you hike in the forest especially near the creek, damns and up into the Carson Range there is a graveyard of rusted pipes everywhere from the old system that once was used to supply the miners.  If you even want a another tidbit of history a Californian Seneca named Sam Marlette and 1873 Nevada State Controller both were investors in the water company and also had stakes in some of the mines. So no matter what name it is called today this is the site where it all began so now some of you understand how the lake and reservoir both received their names from.  Even today Carson City still receives some of its municipal water from the Hobart Reservoir so its truly fascinating that its water has been used for over 130 years.

There is a story about one of the water tanks containing a dead body when in fact it was just mud getting on into the system. I have an article or excerpt call it if you will written by Mark Twain who wrote for the territorial enterprise Nevada's first newspaper. If you chose to read the article it is in white if not move on to read about the rest of the history and about the unexplained below it. You can also see this article at:
http://www.territorial-enterprise.com/indian.htm

Of  late the water with which this town is supplied by the Virginia and Gold Hill Water Company has been quite muddy owing to a cave having occurred in a tunnel which is their principal source of supply. The water did not look well nor taste well. This being the case, people were easily led to believe the story which yesterday got started and spread like wild-fire through the town that the dead and partially decomposed body of an Indian had been discovered in one of the large water tanks or reservoirs high up on the side of the mountain in the western suburbs of the town.

More than half of those who heard the report firmly believed it, and those who did not took delight in spreading the story, just for the fun of sickening their acquaintances. As the story traveled it grew, and at last it was said that in another tank two rotten dogs had been found. As these stories spread there was much vomiting throughout the town, particularly among the ladies. Not a few men also, if the truth is told, threw up thier breakfasts. In some houses the woman folks almost famished of thirst, while in others they procured ice and melted it for cooking and drinking purposes. To say water to a man was to see him turn up his nose and make a wry face. All the breweries and saloons did a land office business and the Dashaways and Good Templars looked as though they would not be able to stand firm much longer.

The Piutes heard that a red brother had been found drowned in one of the tanks, and about fifty of them charged up the mountain in search of the body. During their raid they tore the covers off the several tanks in spite of the remonstrances of Mr. Cody, foreman of the Water Company, and would not be satisfied till they had thoroughly prospected them, when they said: "White man heap tell um d-- n lies." After the red men left Mr. Cody had to go to work and repair damages by nailing down the planks forming the covers of the tanks, the openings into which are always kept locked. In short, the town was in a regular uproar, and the women and everybody that could get sight of Mr. Cody gave him particular fits. It was no use for him to deny the story. All knew they had been drinking dead Indian for the last ten days. They had tasted him and could not be fooled. Others had seen dog hair in the water and had tasted dog. Several had for some days observed floating on the water a peculiar scum and had been unable to account for it, but knew what it was now--it was Indian fat. Thus ran the talk throughout the city, and no wonder that the women vomited.

The fact is that all the tanks are kept tightly covered and locked and nothing at all has been found in the tanks, or has entered them, worse than the muddy water from one of the water tunnels. The muddieness of the water is caused by a cave in this tunnel, as we have said. To attempt to clear the tunnel of the dirt caved down would render the water almost thick with mud for a week or more, and water is now so scarce that they dare not undertake this, as it would leave no water for the town. The only remedy for this state of affairs is to use as much ice in the water comsumed as it can be made to melt.

Walter Hobart had a huge interest in lumbering that is why in formed the lumber company that ran allot of its operations in what some consider part of the Nevada Tahoe State Park.  His saw mills would cut the timbers that would be sent of via V flume while other ones were put into the Carson River to be loaded via railroad up in the Carson River Canyon of Empire Nevada.  All the timber used in flumes used by the Virginia & Gold Hill Water Company came from Hobarts lumbering company.  In 1878 Hobart and Marlette incorporated the Sierra Nevada Wood & Lumber Company which the Ghost Of The Saw Mill is some of the last remnants to the saw mills that graced the region. Hobart's lumber company was well in need for his wood as the many steam engines needed it to operate in total over 100,000 cords a year to be burned to operate those steam boilers.  It had gotten really bad allot of the oldest trees were cut down some of them were there before the white man set foot into this region.

There is a place while hiking up to the Hobart called the "Ghost of a Sawmill" which looks like a submarine but is actually an old steam boiler. Hobart and Marlette did visit this site it was afterall one of there many saw mills in the region. In the 1800's these woods, mountains and hills you see were the sites of many saw mills including this one. If you were to explore the site not much remains but a couple old walls, steam boiler, wagon road, saw blade fragments,  bricks,  debris left behind by Chinese mill workers and pieces of industrial tools left behind. The tensions were extremely high between many of the white Europeans and the Chinese. Some of the Chinamen were murdered and thrown into Lake Tahoe sad to say so there is a good chance they may haunt the woods.

Nobody knows exactly what this sawmill did whether it was used for flumes, timber for steam boilers or for the construction of mines/homes in the area.  The logs cut here could also have been shipped further below the mountains foothills onto the railroad in Carson City then exported using the V&T Railroad. The sawmill probably operated from about 1873 to about 1880 then operations were probably moved due to the fact that timber was being cut to rapidly and deforestation in the region was mainstream. That is why the foothills today in the Carson Range lack forest or they are not as dense this is due to early logging which today the effects are still being seen.

If you really pay attention to this read you will find that everything is somehow connected to one another.  For example the Red House or the original residence was constructed in 1887. Its caretaker went by the name of Harry "Red" McGovern and it became part of the many caretaker stations found along the Water Companies pipelines and damns.  More or less it served as a station and the original home was built just not to far away on Franktown Creek where the water could be diverted via flume from Marlette Lake.  This was a monitoring station that kept the mines and pipeline in check. Such stations general consisted of a house, barn, blacksmith, outhouses and refuse dumps. Some called this Hobart Station no less when they built this station little did they know that it would lead to tragedy which even saddens me. Its not hard to feel emotionally involved in the work we do some places have a sad history.  Prior to the tragic history though the Red House was part of a great achievement during this time period in 1877!

The Virginia and Gold Hill Water Company established phone lines which could connect all the monitoring stations that way its caretakers could be in touch with the headquarter office in Virginia City. There was over thirty miles of telephone line laid out. I did not see to many but I did while hiking see a few wire ceramic and glass insulators along with telephone poles from that era. The phone system actually ran up till about 1957 until the stations were no longer needed.

In 1911 it was a very snowy and cold year therefore ice developed on the Hobart Dam causing it to collapse due to the intense weight.  The waters from the Hobart flash flooded the entire Red House destroying it and some of the other buildings on the property.  Sadly at the time the dam broke the Marlette and Red House caretakers wives or attendants were killed in the incident.  Another attendant who was also present in the Red House did survive no less tragic because the life of an early pioneer of the west also meant a higher risk of death. Death from the wilderness, elements, Indian raids, disease, famine, lack of water, flash floods or just play outlaws. Life was not easy back by the Hobart its a world away from a world even if you can hike 5 to 6 miles into Carson City as a station caretaker you were basically all alone out here.

On the property of the Red House you will see a 1920's Dodge Roadster which is rusting away, picnic table, plaque and a couple buildings. The Red House was eventually acquired by the NV State Parks system in 1963 then at that point they used it as an emergency home for lost hikers or people who wanted to bunk up for the night. Just as a forewarning to anybody who wants to bunk up the Red House is haunted straight up I am not sure the wives of the caretakers haunt the home but in theory I believe they do or there energy is imprinted in time from this tragic event.

The dam would collapse again this time in 1955 causing some damage this is because the Red House sits far to close to the creek and worst its below the dam not a genius of an idea for sure. It did not matter because in the 1940's was the time period when the last attendant lived here. So the renovated Red House has been abandoned over 70 years and so we wanted to bring our viewers a very in depth view of this historic site and we hope everyone leaves it as it is but I am afraid that the elements are beginning to effect the houses integrity unfortunately.

Little do people know it but the Hobart Reservoir area, Red House and the massive canyons all the way down to the western edge of Washoe Valley were all part of Franktown. So when you see photos of the Franktown Creek this not only brought water from the reservoir to the flumes and even locals. But it also made the land fertile enough in lower Franktown so that the ranchers could grow crops which supplied Reno, Carson City, Dayton and residents/miners of Virginia City Nevada in the Comstock Lode with food. Not only were cattle herded here but food was grown both would be essential in sustaining such a town. Today not much remains of Franktown there is a cemetery we tried to access and cannot. We have found a few shacks, old barns, pipes, ranches and even some saw mill sites. But generally most of the town itself is either been absorbed or lost over time once the railroad came to Washoe Valley.  You had your lumberman but you also has your ranchers while others worked at the local quartz mill. Some of the town was up higher in the Carson Range where we journeyed at while the lower portion is where the range meets the valley floor. This is what the plaque states close to the main town site:

FRANKTOWN

Franktown was established by Orson Hyde, probate judge of Carson County, Utah Territory, in the Wassau Valley (Washoe Valley) in 1855.

A sawmill was built and became an important enterprise in furnishing timber to the Comstock mines. The Dall Mill, a quartz mill of 60 stamps, employed hundreds of workmen.

Fertile farms surrounded the town.

With the completion of the railroad from Carson City to Virginia City in 1869, the milling business rapidly lost its importance and the once prosperous town declined. State of Nevada, Department of Cultural Affairs

Today the old Franktown wagon and lumber roads still exist but the town is gone the water pipes from back in the day are all that remains besides the saw mill steam boiler , cemetery and Red House. Perhaps some old ranches below the reservoir that we drove past so we could bring you a lower portion of the town as opposed to the upper portion. I recently found out where the cemetery is so we are currently working with it and that will also be made available on our site in an entirely different case file so state tuned friends. These were early signs that gave life to other towns in the region. You needed wood to build homes, construct mines and run steam boilers at these mills. The men that worked at these saw mills lumbering and working the flumes made Franktown as there own home. I am sure if one were to explore the woods enough they might find some remnants of the town other then what we have here on our site. Its hard to below high above Washoe Valley there was a town nobody really knew once existed. Even Washoe played a roll in the Comstock as the farmers grew wheat, fruit, alfalfa and potatoes all used in the Comstock.

But even places like Franktown would disappear much like the timber lumbered here. Once the Virginia & Truckee railroad operated along the Carson River in Empire NV mills that were offbeat like the one not far from Franktown ran by a Mr. Dall.  A man by the name of Mr. E. Owens of Franktown was in huge support of his town having a road that coukld lead to the Ophir Grade. Mr Dall ran a quartz ore processing mill which came in from Virginia City brought over by wagons over the Ophir Grade which also suffered a major landsland on Slide Mountain that led near the amazing historically beautiful Bowers Mansion.  Even though the road would be built it could also be used for transport lumber to the mill and would later serve as a dump station for wood to be floated up onto the Hobart & Martlett's flume.

As much as the history sounds fascinating and beauty to this rather scenic remote location it also is in an area that has allot of paranormal strangeness. I have learned since running expeditions in the Carson Range including hiking around these lakes and reservoirs that the unexplained is not uncommon up here. There are monsters, Bigfoot lurking in the woods, UFO sightings and even ghosts at these historic sites just from my experience alone. This place holds it secrets very well but it is our job as a paranormal research society to uncover some of them as well just as we did with Jobs Peak, Sierra Canyon & Genoa Peak, Flume Trail, Slide Mountain and even Kings Canyon all within a reasonable distance in the Carson Range of many small towns below. Lets face it these are places that are located in the Sierra Triangle is a region where people vanish, strange objects are seen in the sky, planes disappear and creatures like bigfoot are often sighted.  Maybe its the city lights that lure them in or maybe you just entered the twilight zone with Lord Rick either way we are here to uncover the truth and bring new discoveries made by our team which has been ongoing.

My only regret from our first expedition is that I was not filming nightscapes of the cities below the top of the Carson Range when we encountered a creature. We seen these massive eyes standing very tall making allot of noise. I told my son its probably just a buck lets keep moving because we almost did get attacked by a buck earlier in our first expedition. But once I stopped shining my light onto its eyes and begin descending in the dark it charged at us through thick brush and woods then leaped off a cliff at the moment I was turning around. So allot of strange things happen here even though at some point the forestry leaves gates open both on the Tahoe and Carson City side the fact is so many take there kids to swim here never realizing that among all this history also remains the strange at large as well as a very tragic past. If you have a story to tell we would love to hear it maybe even post any information you have about this location even though the mills are long gone, lumber man and flumes. Nature has re consumed this beautiful area and today it could harbor many secrets some of them we look forward to revealing to our fans and our viewers.

This is an amazing addition to our site as you will see us transitioning from high desert all the way up into the alpine forest of the Sierra Mountain Range. We want to bring it all to those that view our journeys so they can be a part of us in our videos, pictures, media and a part of history that someday may be lost. Over the past few years I have been adding more in depth cases to our site so that you the viewer can delve deep into whater tickles your fancy whether that is the paranormal, nature, scenic phtoography, history or anything else we have put together for you to enjoy. The Hobart area is absolutely amazing all within a journey above Carson City and fading into the wilderness taking some of the same steps early pioneers once did!
