By far the Mackay Mansion located in Virginia City is the most eloquent of all in the state of Nevada. It is more then just a mansion but a museum one that at one time hosted lavish dinner parties hosting President Grant, Samuel Clemens and even Thomas Edison. It was a place where John Mackay resided with his wife and children. At one time children ran through this house laughing and playing. While late at night John Mackay would be ripping up his promissory notes of those who borrowed from him and could not pay him back.  His children would attend the Fourth Ward School which is just a short walk away from his estate and today still stands proud greeting those who enter this once thriving boom town.

The history of John Mackay is quite fascinating because honestly he lived the American dream. In 1840 he emigrated to NYC from Dublin Ireland where he worked in a ship yard at 16.  In 1851 he traveled to San Francisco California via steam boat to work in the Placer gold mines where he made his first fortune in mining. In 1859 on foot he traversed the California sierras traveling right into
Virginia City overlooking the very mansion one day he soon would own. He was an adventurer so he spent his millions on living a lavish lifestyle in California so when he arrived in Virginia City Nevada he had lost everything. Thus he formed a mining company called the Gould and Curry mining company which dealt with the operation of Silver Mining and Mining Stocks.  His business would go on to succeed with his Irish partners James Graham Fair, James C. Flood and William S. O'Brien.

In 1873 in the Comstock Lode they would discover a great ore body known as the big bonanza in the Consolidated Virginia and California Mine which ran more then 1,200' deep yielding almost 4,000 dollars per ton. By 1877 the net worth of their mine yielded 190 million dollars which would be in today's wealth worth nearly a billion dollars. The four way partnership was called "Flood and O'Brien" or also the "Bonanza Firm". Soon after they would go on to establish the Bank Of Nevada in San Francisco.

If you want to rewind it a little just six years after making a life in this boom town in or around the year 1866 Mackway was married to a Marie Louise Hungerford who was a native New Yorker.  She married into riches as a matter in fact for nearly two decades she lived in Mackay's mansion in Paris where she hosted lavish parties entertaining even royalty for nearly two decades. Strangely when she lived at the Mackay Mansion in VC she had her own bedroom perhaps because John really spoiled her with top of the line things that most people never had. For example the mansion had the first indoor restroom in the entire wild west it even had its own wood stove in it to keep you warm while bathing on a cool winter night.

The home itself was constructed by George Hearst in 1859 and was a man who built his fortune on supervising the mines. He used the house more as the base for operations of the Gould and Curry mines office. At one time you could actually access the depths of the mine right on the mansions grounds. According to the guide he told me that their are about 700 to 800 miles of tunnels underneath the mansion and town. He also told me their are rooms underground that are 200' x 400' where ore was removed and if their was ever an Earthquake it would reshape the entire town as we know it. The amount of ore that was removed was in the millions in fact it was nearly 130 degrees down in these mines so miners could only spend half hour increments before being hoisted up and given an hour to cool off.

In a way their is irony to the history of the mansion since Hearst did not stay very long in
Virginia City Nevada. When he made his fortune he sold the home to John Mackay moving to various parts of the country. He sunk allot of his money into the Californian Lumber Industry which today all these towns you seen in the sierras were built with native wood. He also creating mining ventures in Utah and South Dakota. Sure he was a millionaire who came to the boom town with nothing but by the time he died he was one of the most richest men in America. However Mackay became richer once he sunk his efforts into mining the Comstock Lode. Literally he could sell gold and silver ingots right out of his home from the vault weighing as much as 500lbs.  Then the California Bank came into play which today is known as the Ponderosa Saloon. The claim to the Best & Belcher was directly below the bank so that any profits could be stored in its vaults.

What really makes the Mackay name significant is that after he sunk most of his money into his mines and mills which if you check out our historical gallery you can see it was the fact that he is responsible for striking the biggest silver find ever in North America. This one mine alone produced over 133 million dollars alone in pure silver which back then was used by the government to mint coins and make silverware which still can be found till this day.  If that amount of silver were mined today it would be worth four to five times as much as it was back then so in all due honesty Mackay was one of the wealthiest men on the west coast building his fortune from a single coin in his pocket.  His fortunes and finds brought Nevada its statehood but it also financed the northern forces that won the American Civil War.

Besides mining Mackay left other legacies behind he was more then just a millionaire that mined gold. In 1884 he formed one of the first Commercial Cable Companies with a James Gordon Bennett Jr. mainly to compete with Jay Gould and the Western Union Telegraph Company.  At the time Western Union was charging 25 cents a word as a transatlantic toll rate. In 1886 two years after the forming of the cable company Mackay formed the Postal Telegraph Company as a domestic wire telegraph company so that commercial businesses would not need to rely just on Western Union alone.  Jay Gould eventually quit trying to run Mackay out of business due to the rate war that ensued.  Soon after he would form the Commercial Pacific Cable Company in a secret partnership with the Great Northern Telegraphy Company and the Eastern Telegraph company which would lay the first cable across the Pacific ocean.

Sadly Mackay died in 1902 of heart failure in London so he never seen his project completed however his son Clarence continued the project to its end which was completed between the years of 1904 and 1906. The cable ran from San Francisco to the Manila Philippines also Hawaii and Guam with a spur that went from Manila to Shanghai China thus making history.  His son expanded his company forming the federal telegraph company along with its radio stations and research laboratories in 1927. However in 1928 the entire system was bought out by Sosthenes Behn's International Telephone and Telegraph Company. The ITT had organized the Postal Telegraph and Cable Corp. which controlled the Mackay cables in 1928 till the great depression came to be and at that time it rivaled Western Union till about 1943. By then congress authorized an amendement which merged the operations and companies letting Western Union pave the way even though parts of the Mackay system remained with ITT.

You probably are wondering why I am keying you in on so much of this history? It is simple this was a man that built a legacy even long after his death he was felt around the world. His vast fortune carried on for decades even his children carried the Mackay name proudly. I think most of us want to be remembered changing the world as you know it and making history. The Mackay's did just that. Also John Mackay was a Philanthropist he believed in giving to charity. Through the St. Marys Catholic Church he had the Catholic Orphan Asylums erected in Virginia City. Even after his death a portion of his money went to the Mackay School Of Mines which was presented at the University of Nevada where today a state of him stands in front of the Delmare Library on the campus up in Reno. His son Clarence H. Mackay and his widow with the help of sculpture Gutzson Borglum it stands today to remind those that this great man was selfless to the world.

Many of you are probably wondering about the mansion itself and some of its statistics so before I talk about its ghosts let me tell you a bit about this grandeur of a place.  The property itself was surrounded by many buildings of the Gould and Curry Mining Company. The mansion at one time served also as an office it had a vault which stored most of the fortunes made from John's mines.  The companies mining Superintendent lived here also on the property which was Hearst who  owned the mansion all the way to when John purchased the mansion. Once the Mackay's owned it they took over the Gould and Curry Company. In addition to thaat John had bought many claims from 1866-1869 leaving him in control of the Hale, NorCross, Belcher and Kentuck Mine. In addition to profiting from those mines the Gould and Curry Office ran out of the mansion was making millions a per month.

The home was made out of brick to be exact an Italianate style with three stories surrounded by wood veranda and a deck with colonnade of square post. The mansion was equipped with a 500 gallon gravity-flow water tank so that the mansion had running water an even an early water heater was installed by 1875 for the bathroom.  In 1875 when the great fire of
Virginia City destroyed 75 percent of the town this mansion survived. It must had been a terrifying experience to know that the flames reached your property and you had no idea if it would last through the night but it did. The property has multiple fruit trees from the gazebo area alone you can see on a clear day nearly 220 miles of vast Nevada wilderness. So in addition to its beauty it also came with a very picturesque view. One of the most apparent landmarks is of the Sugar Loaf Mountain which we also have done an expedition of if you want a closer view of it. Just a few blocks away is the Savage Mansion which is also just as elegant worth a gander. Many of the notable figures like President Grant not only visited the Mackay Mansion but also here. People who held weather and power also hosted prominent figures at their mansions!

Over the years quite a few paranormal groups and even paranormal television shows have investigated the mansion. We are not the first but I feel that we bring our own charisma to the mansion as we let people see it in a different light. Why? We want to see the mansion continue to thrive so that others can enjoy tours and see this museum. Allot of the artifacts that are found within the mansion belonged to the Mackay Mansion sadly about 30 percent of the antiques were stolen or removed as at one time the property had been abandoned.  No less this mansion may be one of the top haunted sites in all of Virginia City so its a must to visit it no matter how short lived our visit was we can say that we were one of the lucky few who had the chance to hear about its history while investigating its ghosts.

So let us talk about its haunting's which seem reports seem to be of similar entities which haunt the property. The first being a former Colonel often seen sitting in the kitchen supposedly many psychics and mediums have said he is there.  Supposedly you can hear the colonel walking around up and down the stairs on the third floor. Another famous apparition is that of a little girl dressed in one who has often been seen in the upstairs bedrooms. Actually Jonny Depp saw this ghost while staying here during his filming of a movie called the "Dead Man" and heard the child playing.  Another specter that is seen in the mansion is an elderly female who is seen most often on the 2nd floor some people believe it is Mackay's lonely widow. While another apparition that is seen here is of a woman who goes up and down the stairs also has been seen cleaning like she is a servant.

I believe that the ghost that haunt the home were residents of the past who lived full lives here. But I also believe that these entities may have attached themselves to certain objects like the creepy doll and rocking horse in the children's bedroom. Just as the special silverware made for Johns wife may have special meaning to his widows ghost and maybe this is why she hangs around to look after it. You have to understand that allot of the artifacts in the home were sentimental early pioneers took good care of what they owned that is why today over a century later all of it still remains in great shape. So its a given that some spirits are going to be connected to some of the artifacts some would see this as a curse but to me being a parapsychologist we take these as blessings just as during our first investigation we captured a strange image and even some out of the ordinary EVP's. So I can definitely say yes the mansion is haunted and probably by many types of ghosts. This is a funny clip taken from our tour when the guide asked me why they would have a 500lb ingot. Seems reasonable right?

Take note at some the famous guest that attended dinner parties here at the mansion. Do you recognize any of these names?
