 The region between South Lake Tahoe and the Carson Pass is home to this little jewel which is a valley surrounded by well known peaks such as Red Peak. With many meadows of wild flowers a trickling creek and two great lake this truly is a lost paradise. We have great reason to believe this is a Bigfoot migration path simply because the Meiss meadow region is a gateway up into very secluded regions of the Eldorado National Forest especially The Desolation Wilderness.

Although this region is split in two different quadrants one called the Showers Lake being the western one the Meiss Lake Quadrant resides on the eastern side. Meiss Lake is rather small and a bit marshy. It is more of a place to enjoy the frogs croaking while Round Lake is just that a volcanic body of water. It is much larger and deep overshadowed by large volcanic spires. Along the lakes shoreline is many large piece of volcanic rock that were caused when the volcano fiercely exploded.  Other lakes found in the basin are also Scott's Lake and Lake Dardanelles.

When you take on the trail from the Carson Pass it climbs along Red Peak till you rich a large valley which eventually turns very woodsy. On the trail it will split let or right to the left is the Pacific Crest Trail which is more preferable for the hikers who really want to see some of the more popular places in the high sierras. The trail to the right takes you through meadows Meiss Lake and by following the creek to the Meiss Ranch.

Louis Meiss emigrated from Germany to the United States in 1842 where they moved west to a place called Drytown, California with his parents. The town today has little remnants and you be passed by in a blink of an eye. I know because back in 2008 I did visit Dry Town and not many residents live there today.

In 1878 Louis Meiss purchased 1000 acres which included the summit range which divided the quadrants as I talked about earlier. In this case Meiss owned the western quadrant of this range while on the otherside was just a mirror image of what he owned.  By 1880 Meiss finished the family cabin and barn at the edge of the meadows. Louis and Elizabeth had two sons and eight daughters. So keep in mind when you view the photos of the cabin and videos realize that ten people had to live in the two story cabin. That is why I enjoyed expkloring this location so much is that it reminded me of a scene from little house on the prairie.

Louis became to sick to manage the ranch so he gave it to his sons Benjamin and Frank. As Louis in 1905 passed on. Benjamin and his wife Jennie along with their four daughters spent the summer at the ranch every year. You could not spend a winter up at the ranch as the snow could get 20' deep burying everything including the cabin.  One of Benjamin's daughters in 2001 stated that they spent their days fishing and riding horses at this location. While their father brought in cattle from Plymouth through Silver and Caples Lake they would be off riding to Meyer's to pick up their postal mail.  For those of you who are not aware Plymouth is in the foothills of the sierras and still today does allot of cattle ranching. I been there many times the town is very historic but so are some of the ranches who use to take their cattle and herd them all the way up into the high sierras.

The land which including the ranch were sold to the Schneider Family in 1936. By 1965 the US Forest Service acquired the land through a land exchange so that this area could be used for public use. So you have at least three to four generations that lived on this ranch at one time or another. Today both the barn and ranch sit in desolation leaving its secrets behind. Whether Bigfoot passes through the canyon time to time is an unsolved mystery! With great views of Caples Lake, Red Peak and Lake Tahoe this place is very special. Sure we visit some beautiful secluded locations in the high sierras but this location deserves to be recognized. When I spent a day hike through the meadows and up at the lakes I called it the land of paradise and paradise it is!
