Although there are multiple ways you can reach Lake Dardanelles the most traveled is from the Tahoe Rim trail to Big Meadow down to Round Lake then veer west to reach this pristine destination. We had visited Meiss & Round Lake in 2013 when we came across the Meiss Family Ranch. Not to far away from Big Meadow is the Luther Ranch so prior to the area known today for its backpackers back then was used for cattle ranching.

The way we began is by climbing a few hundred feet up along the Tahoe Rim trail which switchbacks till you reach a meadow where you can go in multiple directions so choose wisely as to what you want to see. When you enter Big Meadow you will see a tributary off of the Truckee River which is why its so lush with life. You will then enter a forest of fine firs and pines mixed in with aspens as you push your way across Big Meadow into the primitive area. These trees are very abundant in the Tahoe National Forest which is extensive in the region surrounding Lake Tahoe! Thus they have always been great areas for Bigfoot to remain elusive in without hardly ever been sighted.

Once you enter the woods you will make a very steep decent one direction to the left takes you down to Round Lake the other one to the right then a sharp left will take you on this narrow ascension up to Lake Dardanelles. Along the way to Dardanelles you will cross several small streams including a pond full of lily pads and reeds. You can even hear the frogs croaking and the crickets at night so its rather serene place where less people journey at.

The last quarter to half of mile the trail began's to turn south and turns steep till it tops out at the lake. Once your at the lake you can see the backdrop of an extinct volcano on its southern shore and across the lake granite cliffs. Its very picturesque and you can have a picnic or camp anywhere along the lakes shore but some areas are much harder to get back to since there is no lake trail.

This is a region we still have yet to work with there are two other lakes we will visit probably this year both are on opposite sides of Lake Dardanelles. Its very easy to see the history that remains in the area for example in Bigfoot meadow some of the old fence line separating the Meiss Ranch from the Luther Ranch are still present today. Not just the old fence lines but also the homesteads still remain today so its real house on the prairie type of stuff your seeing when we add places like this to our website.

The Luther Pass is overshadowed by some of the largest peaks we climbed in the Carson range particularly Jobs and Genoa Peak. However this region is overshadowed by the backside of these massive peaks. Both regions which for years have revolved around its Bigfoot presence so anything could come down from those peaks descending onto the Big Meadow and Lake Valley area.

I wanted to find out what Dardnelles stood for or how it had gotten its name. This is what I found on Wikipedia: The Dardanelles (/dɑrdəˈnɛlz/; Turkish: Çanakkale Boğazı, Greek: Δαρδανέλλια, Dardanellia), formerly known as Hellespont (/ˈhɛlɨspɒnt/; Greek: Ἑλλήσποντος, Hellespontos, literally "Sea of Helle"), is a narrow strait in northwestern Turkey Aegean Sea to the Sea of Marmara. It is one of the Turkish Straits, along with its counterpart, the Bosphorus.

If your looking for a lake that you cannot drive to where their are less hikers this place would be it. There is so much woods to explore surrounding the lake and challenge climbs like the volcano that overshadows the south end of the lake. On my first visit here the sun was going down so I only had a chance to work with the southern portion of the lake. I had found some of the largest trees that the Lake Tahoe region has to offer but also in addition to the EVP we captured at the homestead I found what look like little child tracks in the snow which are seperated by 20' apart which I thought was a bit odd.

The lake is great for fishing and swimming but if your a hardcore outdoor enthusiast like me then you will enjoy climbing all the granite rocks and fallen ancient trees found here. Allot of people camp here just because it is a long trek to get back up to this lake. It is not a place where you can drive to its all about using your legs and strength to get back in here but its so worthwhile that you can hear a pin drop. While their are other lakes found in the basin Showers Lake seems to be the most beautiful out of them all in the region its also Lake Dardanelles sister body of water.

Now I know for a fact that this region has had its share of Bigfoot sightings and strangeness. I found tracks in various parts of the region surrounding this lake. Its a heavily secluded area lots of rock formations, cliffs, caves, peaks and ancient forest. When I chose to explore a place like this we want to bring our viewers a little of everything. So if your looking for a little history, mystery and beauty this place gets a perfect 10 out of 10 as it contains all of those things!

In addition to the ranch and all the beautiful scenery there is an extensive history in this region surrounding the Washoe Tribe which were nomadic. They would in the winter months stay in the valley where it is warmer this is where we are based while in the warmer months make the trek up to the regions surrounding Lake Tahoe or what they called Da Ow A Ga. Its very plausible to say that the first humans to ever see Lake Dardanelles would have been the Native Americans who may have used the Big Meadow as there hunting grounds for deer, rabbit and black bear that for thousands of years have grazed here. Not much has changed some of the regions highest peaks remain snow capped almost all year long and during the warmer months the meadows found near Lake Dardnelles are flourishing with wildlife as well as wild flowers.
