As breathtaking as the Silver Lake and Thunder Mountain region are it is also historical. This region resides in the heart of the Sierra Nevada high up in the Eldorado National Forest. Surrounded by meadows of wild flowers, volcanic peaks and Sasquatch activity this really is the ultimate adventure no matter how you cut it.

This region sits along the Mormon Emigrant Trail also known as the Carson Emigrant Trail. At one time nearly 150,000 emigrants passed through here. They also camped in the Thunder Mountain region making this one of the oldest campgrounds in the United States. Many of the early pioneers came through here with wagons, horses and supplies. Most of them eventually migrated to cities like San Francisco and Sacramento to build businesses as well as lives. Not all of the emigrants survived the journey some of them died from accidents all the way to illness.

Although Thunder Mountain is not the highest of mountains the Sierras it is one of the most prestigious as it overshadows the beautiful Silver Lake. The island you see within Silver Lake is called Treasure island. Although most lakes in the sierras have small islands Treasure Island happens to be one of the largest I have seen on my journeys.  I am not to sure of the history of the island but I know that with every name comes a story.

Thunder Mountain sits at about 9,400' it was once a volcano and its lava vents are still visible today. On one side of the mountain it overlooks Kirkwood which is perhaps the winter sports capital of the country. On the other side you get great views of Silver Lake below, Camp Kit Carson and Plasse's resort.  The resort came to be in 1919 which also has a story of its own.

It all really began in the year of 1850 when a man by the name of Ramon Pierre Plasse sailed around South America ending up in San Francisco. The name derives from Plasse's home country of France to be more specific Lyons. During this time when he arrived the gold rush was at full force you had miners traveling deep into the sierra to strike it rich. Some of them crossed the mountains to build mines in Nevada this is why their are so many ghost towns in the state which I currently reside.

By 1853 Plasse established a trading post on the Carson Emigrant Trail which really was a necessity for those making the trip across the Sierras. Supplies could be trading for food or even clothing. Some emigrants were running low on vital necessities thus at that time trading was a great bargaining chip during this time period.

A trader named John M. Verdenal in Oct. 7th of 1852 talks about his experience dealing with a trader. He had bough 75lbs of pork and 100lbs of Flour. Then he drove his cattle down into the Silver Lake basin below where meadows and water were abundant. Many of the early pioneers made use of the trading post not all of them were emigrants some were cattle drivers who used the sierras as a way to ranch. Thus the use of the trading post became a common use of practice during the 1800's.

Although Plasse had a trading post a few miles above Silver Lake his log cabin is where the resort stands today. That log cabin is still at the resort today believe it or not which I will talk more about the history of the resort further below. Prior to operating his trading post during the summer Plasse established a range for cattle and horses. He would then sell or trade the horses to those emigrants traveling westward. The Silver Lake basin was rich full of meadows just as the Allen Ranch which we also covered on this expedition. The local lakes and meadows provided the livestock with vital necessities such as food and water.

In 1862 Plasse married a Loise Retrou having five children who later continued to operate the family businesses in the region. The log cabin they lived in was not very large it had two rooms but back in the day life was simple. Life was not made for luxury it was by design a means to survive. You had to be strong to survive as the winters here can produce easily 20' of snow.  Many emigrants lost their lives in the Sierras for example the Donner Party at Donner Lake who froze to death.

The children of Plasse particularly Maurice, Pete and Alice were known as the ones who established the Plasse Resort. The resort had a general store, cook house, meat market, hotel, campground, stables and even cabins. In 1919 the restaurant was established and if you check out our nightfall album I take you on a journey through the resort which today is a historical site.

Later in 1936 the Silver Lake post office was established and Alice was the first postmistress. Believe it or not that post office remained opened till the 1990's so it really was not that long ago that it shut down. The original barn, hotel and stables are long gone. The original lodge burned down in 1970 a travesty considering the many artifacts that burnt that could never be replaced.

Maurice and Caralita along with their children and grandchildren ran the resort till about 2001. So you can see that the family had been involved with this region for over 150 years. The resort was eventually purchased by local residents of Amador county. It truly at its time was a family operated resort perhaps more or less you could call it a small community.

Besides Silver Lake you also have a few other bodies of water nestled back in the woods here. Those are Amy, Granite and Hidden Lake which are within a reasonable distance on foot.  These same lakes were often visited by emigrants to provide water for their horses.  I personally like these lakes more then Silver considering their beauty and seclusion.

Camp Minkalo was a Camp Fire Girls camp back in the 1950's which later was given to the Boy Scouts. Unfortunately the Boy Scouts never used the camp due to the lack of portable water. The camp had closed and over the years the buildings are being removed. Today though you can see many foundations in the woods with great views along the way of Silver Lake and Thunder Mountain.

On the east of the lake you also have the Kit Carson Lodge which was established in 1926 containing 19 cottages and 8 hotel rooms. It takes up around 12 acres on the shoreline of Silver Lake. The lodge also has a restaurant, beach, art work shops and even a restaurant. Along the way to the lodge before and after are many cozy residential homes.  Also another notable location is the Stockton Camp which has many cabins for rent and was purchased by the city of Stockton California.

With so many great sites it is hard to just enjoy one lake or mountain. Not only is history found throughout this region but some of our best photography came from here. It really puts the sierras into perspective and then our viewers can understand why we had chose to base our location within driving distance of such a place. Sure tales of Bigfoot keep us in suspense but we want to give our viewers a birds eye view of what some of the regions first explorers and emigrants seen on their travels.

Although the trading post no longer exist the many grave sites of the dearly departed do as this region borders the harsh Mokelumne Wilderness.  Despite the fact that tourism as overtaken the area it only takes minutes to turn your adventure into an offbeat one. Its a vast area with allot to explorer and a very thick forest where a creature like Bigfoot to thrive. What more can you really ask for with so many great stops, scenery, tales of early emigrants and historical sites. All within the heart of one of America's greatest mountain ranges!
