When we were based on the East coast of the United States I never really put to much thought into the Sierra/Nevada Triangle. Sure I knew that UFO and Bigfoot sightings were unusually high but little did I know that in my career I would get to experience it on a much more personal level of real time paranormal experiences.

Further below on this page you can see that I have designed a boundary map of the Nevada Triangle. Then further below this image I put a sphere around the triangle. The reason I did this is that based on my research I found out that most of the strange things happen in a large spherical area rather then a triangular one. Just as it was thought that Flight 19's Avenger Bombers crashed closer to Daytona Beach just outside the boundaries of the Bermuda Triangle.

We can often associate these triangles with the unexplained as ancients thought of them as places where the universe met with our planet. Their are many areas on planet Earth like this for example the Great Lakes, Devil's and even the Yukon Triangle. Some theorized they were vortices maybe to another dimension, time or world.

From what I have learned about the Nevada Triangle/Sphere that within that vast region are thousands of square miles of places no man goes. We have the Hollow Earth Theory associated with Death Valley California. We also have adventured around Area 51 which is near the Extraterrestrial Highway and it is called that for a reason. I went out to Rachel Nevada ate a burger, drank beer, played pool and even cracked jokes towards my team about getting anal probed.

That night we hiked out near Tempiute Ghost Town And Mine I had seen a massive orange/reddish object land on a nearby ridge. Later that night I seen those same lights hovering above the desert floor not to far from Groom Lake. I cannot defy what I see so for some of us who experienced places that are paranormal hot beds know that some of us have more questions then we do answers.

When I went hiking not to far from Las Vegas one night my girlfriend and I went investigating a mine for ghostly activity. We came out of the mine made it back to the car everything went well all the stars were out. We literally witnesses a bright white and blue light come at us thousands of miles an hour. As soon as it nearly hit the desert mountain top in front of us it did a 180 degree turn and shot off to space. I think to myself was I ever an abductee and is it because I have boldly gone into one of the worlds most strangest regions?

When I was out at a place called the Valley Of Fire I once had an experience came face to face with possibly a small alien life form. I will never forget it being 3am and this thing is looking right into my eyes cowering behind some brush. You could see that it did not belong on this planet and it was so powerful it made me slowly take steps back walking away.

Visitors from other worlds we have to speculate are very powerful in the mind but they also are found in some of the most remote regions right here on our own planet or even in our skies. How can I ever forget what I seen that night it horrified one of our investigators so bad she literally peed her pants locked herself in a restroom put their by park service.

Then lets not forget what happened in the Eldorado National Forest an area known for its Bigfoot sightings The Bear River Reservoir & Cole Creek really opened up my eyes. To the possibility that giants roam this vast wilderness which resides in the heart of the triangle. When you see one of these creatures and it leaves tracks yet it disappears in thin air just adds to the mystery. Just as places like the Desolation Wilderness, Thunder Mountain, Highland Lakes, Jobs Peak, Calvaveras Big Trees Forest,  Empire City & Carson Rivr Canyon and Mount Raymond are other places we ventured into having some strange Sasquatch experiences all documented.

The Nevada/California triangle region seems to encompass alpine forest all the way to harsh deserts like the Mojave Desert and even some caverns which have an entrance to our hollow Earth called Mitchell Caverns which reside near the lower part of the triangle.  It is rumored that aliens called repitlians live underground so that is just another story associated with this region.  Putting it all together when it comes to the triangle it is factual that their are places even today where men and planes have just vanished! For example the mystery of the Nevada triangle was sensationalized when Steve Fossett's plane in 2007 went missing. When Steve Fossett an experienced pilot just went for a scenic flight over the Sierra mountain range. Eventually some hikers did find his plane but no less their was very little wreckage found and only a few small pieces of bone. Later on they found out that in the same region near Mammoth Lakes eight more planes would soon be discovered!

What could be causing this could it be that some kind of methane or toxic gas is being leaked from the Long Valley California Caldera near Bennettville and Yosemite? If it were to ever erupt it would be cataclysmic definitely an Earth Changing event. If you are interested in reading about Yellowstone's sister super volcano you can do so further below on this prologue page.  Scientist have found that many quakes are still happening near the caldera on a daily basis. So it is plausible that whenever some major world disaster is about to happen people see strange lights and UFOS in the sky. This happened in the Indonesian Tsunami just days prior to the disaster. Could it be because such triangles serve as perhaps a way for an advanced alien race to jump through time from millions of light years away?

I have heard allot of fish stories also some people saying thousands of planes went missing or people but that is just not the case. Sure their are some planes on occasion that get down and some are never found. The sierras are lush full of cliffs, canyons, plateaus, rock formations, rivers, streams, lakes and extinct volcanoes. I also think of it is a world away from another world and so far it has been. I have read stories of stick like creatures in the sierras all the way from a hag with claws 7' tall that disembowels its victims. Maybe the triangle is so vast that it harbors its secrets and many things that are just not known to man yet. For example hiking out near Noble Canyon a massive bird flew right behind me and through the forest. It was so powerful I could feel its wings and Tammy had gotten a small glimpse of it she said it was bigger then me. So with vastness also comes new forms of life so our work is a combination of UFOLOGY and Cryptozoology that we are portraying within this hub.

I have seen aliens, UFOs, bigfoot and I have even gotten credible evidence to prove to you that this region upholds its name as for being one of the hottest paranormal locations on the planet. So when you browse this addition to our site keep an openmind look at all the evidence we compiled for you then form your own conclusions about the existence of this triangle. I have made sure to back up my claims with various categories of evidence which includes Bigfoot evidence all the way to UFO photos and videos captured within the triangle. I really did not start compiling much evidence till I relocated to the Lake Tahoe region in 2011!

So I want others to use this compilation not to only be aware that there might be a UFO to Bigfoot connection but also to the fact that I have journeyed into the void. So we want to share with you some of those remote locations along with other sources of information which detest the fact that our own government has stated that UFOs are not real nor do they exist. So this is my work my very own research and I am putting it into all of your hands so that you can treasure the knowledge that is found here. Although it does not document all my findings, sightings and strange experiences what it does prove is two things.

The first that UFOs do exist whether they are alien or some unknown manmade craft remains to be seen. The second you will learn is that their are giants found within this region some refer to this creature as Bigfoot or Sasquatch. So the two things we want our audience to connect with is that their may be a connection between the lights in the sky and the creatures who leave the massive impressions behind.

I believe in FULL UFO DISCLOSURE and feel any of you who dare venture through this section will respect what it is we have done here. We are making our UFO files available to the public this includes the amazing footage you can watch with various experiments we did using a telescope or comparing the UFO to the planet Mars. We welcome you to check out the UFO videos please view them in full screen you will see we captured machinery moving around inside, pulsations and many other oddities. Just as you will see photos and video of some massive prints we found deep in the heart of the Sierra Triangle.

I will not tell you thousands have vanished to sensationalize this location but what I can tell you that it is a very vast region. You have multiple national forest and wildernesses's that meet. Also the Mammoth Caves are deep within the triangle said to be a labyrinth of tunnels that go for 700 miles. So it is just as vast underground as it is above with thousands of mountains some who have not been bested. So nature could hide its secrets very well and some missing planes may have just been pilot errors considering the gale force winds that blow over the high sierras. Some deaths in the sierras are attributed to lost hikers who freeze to death or avalanches which can occur due to massive heavy snowfall. So we must also be a realist when peering into the triangle and not jump the gun as some incidents do have plausible explanations.

Their are places in the triangle your compass may not work or you may not get a signal I have read about this also. You can scream but nobody will hear you its just you miles in the middle of where no man has been. You can hike in massive gorges under the stars and your almost guaranteed that you will by the end of the night have seen at least one UFO. You may even be stalked by Bigfoot many times I been out at night hiking alone with just my dog deep in the triangle where something started following me. When I would stop it would stop and it would stay on my trail for sometimes a couple miles. I lived ii man I seen things that could blow your mind so now I get to tell my story so I have also posted my Bigfoot and UFO radio interviews I did which touches base on the Nevada Triangle a little bit.

That is what we hope to do here blow your mind so think of this is a compilation of some of our recent work within the Sierra Triangle. Overtime ill continue to add to this hub and will also add user submissions as well. Why? We just want to further educate others about this unique region and reveal to you some of its paranormal secrets. We took the road less traveled and along the way we had gotten more then what we bargained for. This is why my interest in the Nevada Triangle has grown so big it is because I experienced it for myself. Years of experiences have added up to this very point which is what you are about to see on this special addition to our site.

I have even a wall of the weird about some strange things in relation to the triangle and news articles about strange lights seen in rural Nevada. Strangely when people get this evidence the news will not ever release it or the governments UFO national reporting sight dismiss all these sightings as Venus or as Comet ISON. This is what sparked me to open up this hub is so that we can show the masses that what we stumbled upon is very real it is not so much paranormal when you can come to an understanding that their is life on other worlds. Just as their is billions of stars, planets and galaxies. For every three people on planet Earth their is at least one livable Earth like planet in our galaxy. There are many solar systems where planets can exist in the goldilocks zone which is a habitable area where life can thrive.

So in reality these UFOs and massive mother ships we have captured in the triangle is all because I have the visibility of the night sky every night. Strange things happen out in these mountains sometimes you photograph a UFO you did not see with the naked eye other times craft hover above the mountain tops strobing off 8 colors a second. Maybe the reason why these triangles have so many great UFO sightings is because of their remote locations not so much that they are vortexes to other worlds.

What really constitutes for being a triangle is it the strange things that occur or the people who are never found again? People who once piloted a plane or hiked in only to never be seen again! Were they taken? Did they go underground and get lost in subterranean tunnels? I think it is a little bit of both I think that when legends like Steve Fossett crash for no apparent reason that we must speculate that maybe one of these objects accidentally collided with some of these planes or maybe they were brought down? Maybe Sasquatch is an alien himself maybe they pick them up and drop them off so they can study the human race and eco system!

As you can see I like to keep an openmind I am not doing this to get famous nor am I doing this to get on television. I am giving you something more better then television a look into the triangle from within the void. The places I have been and the things I have seen are enough to last me a lifetime. I know UFOs are real and Bigfoot is a living breathing creature. But I am left wondering where did they come from and why are they here? Just as what happened to the men found mutilated at Tragedy Springs? You have to wonder if that incident had anything to do with a Bigfoot attack gone wrong or if they were abducted then mutilated similar to the hikers found in Russia one night.

Nevada and parts of California are home to many strange places it often makes you wonder if it due to the fact that some of these locations are the last remnants on Earth that remain untouched by man. Did you know some of the oldest Mummies were found at a place called Grimes Point which also has subterranean tunnels and was revered by the ancients as a place where the gods came down from the sky? The gods were in fact aliens with technology and maybe mummification was a way to be preserved so that when the gods/aliens returned they could revive you.

Aside from this location you could also go to a stranger one at a place known as the Cave Of The Red Haired Giants. This location in the Great Basin was home to a race of giants which ate the local natives. They may have came from another world nobody knows but the cave is very real so are the skulls that were exhumed here during excavations.

You have to ask yourself why is all these strange things happening all the way from Las Vegas out to Fresno California to Northern Nevada's city of Reno. Portions of the triangle are owned by Nellis AFB, Fallon AFB, Groom and China Lake Naval Facility. The closest I been to China Lake was in Death Valley's Ghost Town Of Bellarat. The mountains behind the ghost town have been a place with strange lights and these yeti like beings that are said to live underground. What we must understand is that the triangle is encompassed by government land this includes where atomic testing was done. Nuclear weapons were as bright as the sun I speculate that when we started testing them that created a wave of UFO visitations particularly in Nevada where thousands of UFOS are sighted for years. It seems the US Government purchased large areas within the triangle perhaps to cover up the existence that E.T.s are visiting our planet particularly rural Nevada.

I have had experiences all over the triangle which varies from UFOS in the desert to UFOS hovering over the high sierras which are forested very heavily. Most of those forested mountains contain a healthy population of Sasquatch. I suppose it could hide within the triangle or maybe the reason we have not found where its habitat is at is because the lights we seen over the mountains may be dropping off or picking them up.

So we ask you to hitch a ride hold onto your seats and welcome to a whole new frequency. I have a feeling more is to come. Since we released on youtube our videos many people from Lake Tahoe, Carson City, Fernley, Fallon, Reno, Minden, Gardnerville, Las Vegas, Virginia City, Bridgeport, Tonapah and Markleeville have contacted us sharing similar stories.

I have heard tales ranging from a creature with large wings out near Fernley all the way to people having similar Bigfoot experiences at the many of the same places we did research at in the sierras. I have also had people tell me some of their alien and UFO experiences out here in rural Nevada and people have shared with us similar stories about pulsating orbs of light in the sky. I even had one report recently of a massive ship during the day out near Dayton Nevada. Most of these folks prefer to be anonymous so if you have evidence such as a UFO video, Bigfoot evidence etc feel free to submit it to us at AngelOfThyNight@paranormalghostsociety.org so we can add it to our submissions page.

The sole purpose of this hub on our site serves two purposes one is A. Awareness the other is B. The Truth by making you aware of the truth you can come to your own conclusions if the triangle exist. You might come to the conclusion that most of Nevada and rural California is just weird who knows. But what we ask is you come here with an openmind understand that if anything were to happen to me you have nothing but the stone cold truth here.

This is bigger then you or me just as if the Long Valley Caldera blows it could make most of the United States even the world uninhabitable! So maybe this is why there are so many UFOs or maybe our own government is testing aerodynamic craft of their own. Maybe aliens are checking us out it seems that most abductions occur in rural location. Could have atomic testing have had an alluring effect on other beings in our solar system or galaxy? Are these Bigfoot a product of all these UFOs in the region? So as you can see were left with mystery and lore. We can only speculate that the Nevada Triangle is one of those places on Earth that flourish with the unexplained and some of us are lucky enough to encounter it others not so much especially when they vanish.

But one thing is for sure if you ever venture into the triangle enough your going to see some strange things. I had an experience in August of 2013 I went to bed about 4am just before the sun was coming up over the mountains. I was sitting up then had an hour of missing time I was so startled because all I remember is my son and I on these metal flat beds with sheets over us. So I believe that I have been abducted it first started with a few UFO photos taken in the region and now it has grown to me feeling them. Sometimes when I hear the dogs where I live barking I also feel like they are close and so I spent a few nights capturing these visitors all well within the boundaries of the Nevada triangle.

Maybe these sightings and occurrences are meant for me or maybe they are meant for me to share. I have no idea what fate has in store for any of us it could be aliens are more blatant because they are returning to our planet with more knowledge or maybe the triangles are places where horrible things happen. Horrible things such as experimentation on humans, kidnapping pilots and maybe they are here to invade. Just as their have been trumpet sounds or massive hums even in Nevada. I believe those are massive mother ships interacting with the Earths gravitational field and we just cannot see it. I know these sort of things exist as in early January of 2014 I seen an object get ejected from a much larger pulsating object right over the sierras which divide California and Nevada.

So without further ado I bring to all of you the mysteries, secrets, legends, lore and evidence of The Sierra Bermuda Triangle!  You can also read a story that was written up when this all begun at Click Here: UFO Caught Twice In Sierra Nevada Mountains! If you want to read about the super volcano you can do so by scrolling further below on this page. I do feel that maybe these UFOs are hovering over this region because within the next 100 years it is going to blow. It would obviously effect humanity especially anyone who lives within the triangle and that we do. Keep in mind their is allot to take in so in theory I personally believe that this region is the states is home to some of the strangest paranormal occurrences in the world.

California Supervolcano Has Split Personality

//
The official USGS prognosis puts the odds of an eruption in any given year at less than one percent.
USGS

THE GIST:

- Long Vally caldera has sent ash as far east as the Mississippi River in past eruptions.

- Though the chances of an eruption are low, we could see this kind of explosive behavior again.

- Even with the potential danger, there is still no reason to give up your retreat at Mammoth Mountain.

There's some good news and bad news regarding a sleeping supervolcano in California.

The good news is that the Long Valley caldera, like her big sister Yellowstone in Wyoming, is not getting ready to super-erupt and again cover half of North America in ash. The bad news is that when Long Valley does someday get hot and bothered again, it may prove to be surprisingly bi-polar.

A new study that uses argon isotopes in the lava rocks to refine the timing of different eruptions over the last 160,000 years reveals that when Long Valley has spewed forth in the past, it's been in two very different styles at nearly the same time, which makes it a bit of a volcanic oddity.

One eruption style is a gloppy, not very explosive lava called basalt that poses little blast danger unless it contacts groundwater or snow.

The other sort of eruption involves more glass-rich or "silicic" magma that appears at Long Valley to hitch a ride with the basalt to the surface. When it gets there, it tends to come out of the ground in the more explosive, ashy style of Mount St. Helens.

"The result was kind of surprising to me," said geologist Gail Mahood of Stanford University and author of the new study in the latest issue of the Geological Society of America Bulletin. "It's the pairing (of the two kinds of eruptions) that was surprising."

Long Valley and the associated Mammoth Mountain resort area in east-central California have been extensively studied and monitored by geologists who have seen signs over the years that there is still hot basalt underground. Such signs include the doming of the earth in some places, the die-off of trees and dangerous releases of deadly carbon dioxide gas.

But there is a silver lining even to these ominous signs from below, said Mahood.

"The fact that we see big basalts come up means there is no big magma body down there," Mahood told Discovery News. That's because a vast pool of magma would absorb the basalt, she explained. "That's good news."

Another bit of good news is that all of the most recent eruptions happened along a straight north-to-south about 10 kilometers wide. "That means you can focus on this area," Mahood said.

"Professor Mahood's new research provides important additional information on the timing of past eruptions, but her results do not alter our prognosis for future eruptions in the Long Valley area," said Margaret Mangan, the Scientist-in-Charge of the U.S. Geological Survey's Long Valley Observatory.

That official prognosis puts the odds of an eruption in any given year at less than one percent. That's about the same odds for the San Andreas Fault letting loose another magnitude 8 earthquake like the one that destroyed San Francisco in 1906 on any given day.

"It's a low probability," agrees Mahood. She adds that it would not surprise her if there was a small eruption in the next 100 years somewhere along that north-south line. The worst case -- but not highly likely -- scenario is that the eruption would be at Mammoth Mountain.

Long Valley Caldera

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Long Valley Caldera is a depression in eastern California that is adjacent to Mammoth Mountain. The valley is one of the earth's largest calderas, measuring about 20 mi (32 km) long (east-west) and 11 mi (18 km) wide (north-south), and up to 3,000 ft (910 m) deep.

Long Valley was formed 760,000 years ago when a huge volcanic eruption released very hot ash that later cooled to form the Bishop tuff that is common to the area. The eruption was so colossal that the magma chamber under the now destroyed volcano was emptied to the point of collapse. The collapse itself caused an even larger secondary eruption of pyroclastic ash that burned and buried thousands of square miles. Ash from this eruption blanketed much of the western part of what is now the United States.

Geography

Map of the Long Valley Caldera

The caldera is a giant bowl-shaped depression, approximately 20 miles (32 km) wide, surrounded by mountains, but open to the southeast. The elevation of the bottom of the bowl ranges from 6,500 to 8,500 ft (2,000 to 2,600 m), being higher in the west.[2]

Near the center of the bowl, there is a resurgent dome formed by magmatic uplift. The southeastern slope from the caldera down towards Bishop, California is filled with the Bishop tuff, solidified ash that was ejected during the stupendous eruption that created the caldera. The Bishop tuff is thousands of feet thick and is cut by the Owens River Gorge, formed during the Pleistocene when the caldera filled with water and overtopped its rim.

The rim of the caldera is formed from pre-existing rock, rising about 3,000 ft (910 m) above the caldera floor.[2] However, the eastern rim is less high, only about 500 ft (150 m).[2]

Mammoth Mountain is a lava dome complex in the southwestern corner of the caldera, consisting of about 12 rhyodacite and dacite overlapping domes.[2][3] These domes formed in a long series of eruptions from 110,000 to 57,000 years ago, building a volcano that reaches 11,059 feet (3,371 m) in elevation.[4]

The Mono-Inyo Craters are a 25 mi (40 km)-long volcanic chain that sit along a narrow, north–south-trending fissure system extending along the western rim of the caldera from Mammoth Mountain to the north shore of Mono Lake.[5] The Mono-Inyo Craters erupted from 40,000 to 600 years ago, from a magma source separate from the Long Valley Caldera.[6]

Although the area is still volcanically active, the caldera itself is extinct: seismic mapping has shown the magma body deep underground is mostly crystallized and not molten anymore. The caldera has an extensive hydrothermal system. Casa Diablo Hot Springs at the base of the resurgent dome hosts a geothermal power plant. Hot Creek cuts into part of the resurgent dome and passes through hot springs. The warm water of Hot Creek supports many trout, and is used at the Hot Creek Fish Hatchery.[7] The creek was closed to swimming in 2006 after geothermal activity in the area increased, and was still closed as of 2012.[7][8] There are a number of other hot springs in the area, some of which are open to bathers.

Geology

Caldera

The tectonic causes of the Long Valley volcanism are still largely unexplained and are therefore a matter of much ongoing research. Long Valley is not above a hotspot as is Yellowstone or Hawaii, nor is it the result of subduction such as that which produces the volcanism of the Cascades.

The known volcanic history of the Long Valley Caldera area started several million years ago when magma began to collect several miles below the surface. Volcanic activity became concentrated in the vicinity of the present site of Long Valley Caldera 3.1 to 2.5 million years ago with eruptions of rhyodacite followed by high-silica rhyolite from 2.1 to 0.8 million years ago. After some time a cluster of mostly rhyolitic volcanoes formed in the area. All told, about 1,500 sq mi (3,900 km2) were covered by lava.

All but one of these volcanoes, 1–2 million year old Glass Mountain (made of obsidian),[9]:264 was destroyed by the major eruption of the area 760,000 years ago, which released 600 km3 (140 cu mi) of material from vents just inside the margin of the caldera (the 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption was 1.2 km3 (0.29 cu mi). About half of this material was ejected in a series of pyroclastic flows of a very hot, 1,500 °F (820 °C), mixture of noxious gas, pumice, and ash that covered the surrounding area hundreds of feet (meters) deep. One lobe of this material moved south into Owens Valley, past where Big Pine, California now lies. Another lobe moved west over the crest of the Sierra Nevada and into the drainage of the San Joaquin River. The rest of the pyroclastic material along with 300 km3 (72 cu mi) of other matter, was blown as far as 25 mi (40 km) into the air where winds distributed it as far away as eastern Nebraska and Kansas. However, much of the material ejected straight into the air fell back to earth to fill the 2–3 km (1.2–1.9 mi) deep caldera two-thirds to its rim.

Eruptions

Subsequent eruptions from the Long Valley magma chamber were confined within the caldera with extrusions of relatively hot (crystal-free) rhyolite 700,000 to 600,000 years ago as the caldera floor was upwarped to form the resurgent dome followed by extrusions of cooler, crystal-rich moat rhyolite at 200,000-year intervals (500,000, 300,000, and 100,000 years ago) in clockwise succession around the resurgent dome.[2] The declining volcanic activity and increasingly crystalline lava extruded over the last 650,000 years, as well as other trends, suggest that the magma reservoir under the caldera has now largely crystallized and is unlikely to produce large-scale eruptions in the future.[10]

The Long Valley volcano is unusual in that it has produced eruptions of both basaltic and silicic lava in the same geological place.[11]

Water from the Owens River filled the caldera to a depth of 300 m (1,000 ft) as of 600,000 years ago. At that time, the lake surface was at an elevation near 7,500 feet (2,300 m).[12] The lake drained sometime in the last 100,000 years after it overtopped the southern rim of the caldera, eroded the sill, and created the Owens River Gorge. A human-made dam in the gorge has created Lake Crowley, a partial restoration of the original lake. Since the great eruption, many hot springs developed in the area and the resurgent dome has uplifted.

During the last ice age, glaciers filled the canyons leading to Long Valley, but the valley floor was clear of ice. Excellent examples of terminal moraines can be seen at Long Valley: these moraines are the debris left from glacial sculpting. Laurel Creek, Convict Creek, and McGee Creek all have prominent moraines.

Recent activity

In May 1980, a strong earthquake swarm that included four Richter magnitude 6 earthquakes struck the southern margin of Long Valley Caldera associated with a 10 in (25 cm), dome-shaped uplift of the caldera floor.[13][14] These events marked the onset of the latest period of caldera unrest that continues to this day.[13] This ongoing unrest includes recurring earthquake swarms and continued dome-shaped uplift of the central section of the caldera (the resurgent dome) accompanied by changes in thermal springs and gas emissions.[13] After the quake another road was created as an escape route. Its name at first was proposed as the "Mammoth Escape Route" but was changed to the Mammoth Scenic Loop after Mammoth area businesses and land owners complained.

In 1982, the United States Geological Survey under the Volcano Hazards Program began an intensive effort to monitor and study geologic unrest in Long Valley Caldera.[13] The goal of this effort is to provide residents and civil authorities in the area reliable information on the nature of the potential hazards posed by this unrest and timely warning of an impending volcanic eruption, should it develop.[13] Most, perhaps all, volcanic eruptions are preceded and accompanied by geophysical and geochemical changes in the volcanic system.[13] Common precursory indicators of volcanic activity include increased seismicity, ground deformation, and variations in the nature and rate of gas emissions.[13]

Hydrothermal system

The Long Valley Caldera hosts an active hydrothermal system that includes hot springs, fumaroles (steam vents), and mineral deposits. Hot springs exist primarily in the eastern half of the caldera where land-surface elevations are relatively low; fumaroles exist primarily in the western half where elevations are higher. Mineral deposits from thermal activity are found on an uplifted area called the resurgent dome, at Little Hot Creek springs, Hot Creek Gorge, and other locations in the south and east moats of the caldera.[15]

Hot springs discharge primarily in Hot Creek Gorge, along Little Hot Creek, and in the Alkali Lakes area. The largest springs are in Hot Creek Gorge where about 250 l (66 US gal) per second of thermal water discharge and account for about 80% of the total thermal water discharge in the caldera. At the other extreme are springs at Hot Creek Fish Hatchery which contain a small component (2–5%) of thermal water that raises water temperatures about 5 °C (9.0 °F) higher than background temperatures. Use of the warm spring water in the hatcherytrout growth rates are faster in the warm water than in ambient stream temperatures in Long Valley.[15] has increased fish production because

In hydrothermal systems the circulation of groundwater is driven by a combination of topography and heat sources. In Long Valley Caldera, the system is recharged primarily from snow-melt in the highlands around the western and southern rims of the caldera. The meteoric water infiltrates to depths of a few kilometers (miles) where it is heated to at least 220 °C (428 °F) by hot rock near geologically young intrusions. Upflow occurs in the west moat where the heated water with lower density rises along steeply inclined fractures to depths of 1–2 km (0.62–1.24 mi). This hydrothermal fluid flows laterally, down the hydraulic gradient, from the west to the southeast around the resurgent dome and then eastward to discharge points along Hot Creek and around Crowley Lake. Reservoir temperatures in the volcanic fill decline from 220 °C (428 °F) near the Inyo Craters to 50 °C (122 °F) near Crowley Lake due to a combination of heat loss and mixing with cold water.[15]

Hot Creek has been a popular local swimming hole for decades. Over a dozen people have died in Hot Creek since the late 1960s but most of these deaths happened to people who ignored the numerous warning signs and attempted to use the hydrothermal pools as hot tubs (like the stream portion of the creek, these pools alternate in temperature but the eruptions in the pools are of super-heated water in already very hot water). Recent geothermal instability has led to its temporary closure for swimming. Officials are unsure of when (if ever) Hot Creek will officially reopen for swimming.

Hydrothermal activity has altered many rocks in the caldera, transforming them into travertine and clay. At the Huntley clay mine white chalky clay called kaolinite is mined; the kaolinite is exposed on the resurgent dome and appears as a brilliant white band.

Tourism and hiking

The largest tourist attraction in the caldera is the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area: the area offers skiing and snowboarding in the winter, and mountain biking in the summer. The Hot Creek tourist attraction was closed to swimming in 2006 due to increased geothermal activity.

Hiking and off-road vehicle driving is available throughout the caldera, and in the glacial valleys of the Sherwin Range, immediately to the south of the caldera. Hikers can hike to several lakes in these glacial valleys, including Valentine Lake, Convict Lake, Lake Dorothy, and Laurel Lakes. Crowley Lake, at the south end of the caldera, is noted for its fishing.

The nearest hotel accommodations to the caldera are in Mammoth Lakes, California. There are also campgrounds scattered throughout the caldera, and in the mountains near the edge of the caldera.

Recent fatalities

In April 2006, three members of the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area ski patrol died while on duty. All three died from suffocation by carbon dioxide when they fell into a fumarole on the slopes of the mountain. [16]

The large 17 x 32 km Long Valley caldera east of the central Sierra Nevada Range formed as a result of the voluminous Bishop Tuff eruption about 760,000 years ago. Resurgent doming in the central part of the caldera occurred shortly afterwards, followed by rhyolitic eruptions from the caldera moat and the eruption of rhyodacite from outer ring fracture vents, ending about 50,000 years ago.

During early resurgent doming the caldera was filled with a large lake that left strandlines on the caldera walls and the resurgent dome island; the lake eventually drained through the Owens River Gorge.

The caldera remains thermally active, with many hot springs and fumaroles, and has had significant deformation, seismicity, and other unrest in recent years. The late-Pleistocene to Holocene Inyo Craters cut the NW topographic rim of the caldera, and along with Mammoth Mountain on the SW topographic rim, are west of the structural caldera and are chemically and tectonically distinct from the Long Valley magmatic system.

Long Valley Caldera at a Glance

Long Valley Caldera is a 15- by 30-km oval-shaped depression located 20 km south of Mono Lake along the east side of the Sierra Nevada in east-central California. This area of eastern California has produced numerous volcanic eruptions over the past 3 million years, including the massive caldera-forming eruption 760,000 years ago. The most recent eruption occurred just 250 years ago in Mono Lake at the north end of Mono-Inyo Craters volcanic chain.

Volcanic Unrest

In May of 1980, a strong earthquake swarm that included four magnitude 6 earthquakes struck the southern margin of Long Valley Caldera associated with a 25-cm, dome-shaped uplift of the caldera floor. These events marked the onset of the latest period of caldera unrest that continues to this day. This ongoing unrest includes recurring earthquake swarms and continued dome-shaped uplift of the central section of the caldera (the resurgent dome) accompanied by changes in thermal springs and gas emissions.

USGS Monitoring

In 1982, the U.S. Geological Survey under the Volcano Hazards Program began an intensive effort to monitor and study geologic unrest in Long Valley caldera. The goal of this effort is to provide residents and civil authorities in the area reliable information on the nature of the potential hazards posed by this unrest and timely warning of an impending volcanic eruption, should it develop.

Most, perhaps all, volcanic eruptions are preceded and accompanied by geophysical and geochemical changes in the volcanic system. Common precursory indicators of volcanic activity include increased seismicity, ground deformation, and variations in the nature and rate of gas emissions.

Super Volcanoes a ‘major threat’ that could erupt sooner than thought: study

New research indicates massive eruptions originally thought to take 100,000 years could develop in half that time

By / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

The next big disaster epic out of Hollywood might want to borrow its script from a new study on catastrophic super volcanoes.

It turns out the rare occurrence — which involves enough magma and ash to cover whole continents — could virtually wipe out the world sooner than originally thought, according to researchers from Vanderbilt University in Nashville.

“The generation of such large pools of magma and their eruption are fascinating phenomena from a scientific standpoint, but also constitute a major threat to humanity,” according to the findings, which were published in the journal Public Library of Science ONE.

Geologists have commonly believed that super volcanoes can take as many as 100,000 to 200,000 years until giant pools of magma brewing beneath them are formed and belch into the sky.

Now, the study proposes that it’s a matter of thousands or even hundreds of years before these natural, ticking time-bombs could blow their tops.

“Our study suggests that when these exceptionally large magma pools form they are ephemeral and cannot exist very long without erupting,” Vanderbilt geologist Guilherme Gualda said in a statement.

The team studied a deposit of rock in Long Valley, Calif., where a super volcano is believed to have erupted about 760,000 years ago. The large magma pool likely formed in 500 to 3,000 years, with the ensuing eruption spewing volcanic debris on about half of North America, according to the findings.

These super eruptions are about 100 times the force of volcanic eruptions known in our lifetime, such as the Mount St. Helens disaster in 1980 that sent gray ash raining down on eastern Washington state.

Scientists have identified about 50 super eruptions in history, the most recent one in New Zealand about 26,000 years ago, according to NASA.

But before bunker builders whip themselves into a frenzy over super volcanoes, the geological community doesn’t believe any known volcanic hotspots, such as in Yellowstone National Park, are currently gearing up for another super eruption.

Still, “the fact that at Yellowstone there’s no giant magma body right now doesn’t mean that in hundreds to thousands of years we couldn’t have one,” Gualda said, according to ScienceNews.org
