Over the years many scholars stated that the earth was hollow. I have come to believe rather that their are hollow pockets under the earths surface which might contain underground rivers, tunnels, caverns and even unknown lifeforms. Years ago people were entertained by movies like "Journey To The Center Of The Earth" however years ago believers like Jack Mitchell were often shunned upon by societies closeminded beliefs. Their are so many factors to take into consideration such as how deep is to deep? Will their be enough air? Is the temperatures further below our surface to hot or to cold? What happens if you get lost or fall into a chasm for thousands of feet? The dangers involved alone in spelunking would never out weigh trip into our underworld. Mitchell founder of Mitchell Caverns in the Mojave Desert came to the desert with his wife Ida to escape the Great Depression. The west was harsh you had lack of water high heat waves and food was scarce. Jack only had some beans for eating and his gun for shooting rabbits this was about it according to facts. They knew and heard about the caverns so they filed a claim on them then later it crossed their minds to create a tourist attraction surrounding them. They call this location California's most remote state park and it is just that. I stood on a peak of the Providence Mountains and literally seen miles of darkness. Its a pretty mountain range but bares quite an ancient history as well. Within these mountains the caverns made of Limestone have very rare features not found within the other caves in the state of CA. The caverns contain formation like stalagmites, stalactites, popcorn, lily pads, draperies, curtains cave shielfs, helictites and even coral pipes. The Mitchells knew that this rarity could turn into a small profit for tours in 1934. In a book called the Caveman it stated that Jack Mitchell was lowered down a ledge of 500 feet however the book has to be in accurate considering the depth of this cavern is only 309 feet unless however!?!. Imagine sitting in a bosun chair complete darkness banging against rock walls....swaying left to right at that point dropping a rock covered in a gasoline sock only to watch it disappear into darkness. This is what led Mitchell to believe that this cave was one of the very few entrances to our inner earth. He did leave his signature in a room called the dog leg. Eventually Mitchell called this cave the cave of the Winding Stairs. Basically the cave slopes down then drops off....then slopes down more the opposite direction then drops off. Today the cavern is kepted locked with a giant black door and chains however some sites show the entrance as to being outside perhaps over the years they found a way to connect all 3 caves together as I found two I spelunked around in during my exploration here. It is very rarely used except for cave rescue exercise teams who are in alliance with the sheriffs and state of CA parks and recreation. It was found that their is an end to this cave.
In 1968 one of the best caving movies was filmed here named The Cave Of The Winding Stair in Black and White. It was a video on techinique even had a live rescue caught. It was the first single rope techniques ever caught on film making it one of the biggest caving movies to ever hit the west coast. You can check out a map to the cave at http://www.cavegraphics.com/WindingStairs.html although it shows a bottom floor to this cave their are some smaller tunnels that look like they could go further below including one to the register room. Keep in mind this is what has been surveyed so far however true spelunking sometimes boils down to crawling into small tunnels which lead to more caverns. Their were three caves that Mitchell Caverns was composed of the El Pakiva...known as the Devil's House....Tecopa Cave named after Chief Tecopa the last chief of the Shoshone Indians. The final one which we talked about above the Winding Stair Cave the most mysterious of all or notorious of all.. Another face that most of you do not know is that this is the only cave on the Northern Hemisphere we know of to date which has its main season during winter. Perhaps this is because during the hotter months the long hike and caverns are full of dry heat. Back in the day ole Jack gave tours of the caves seperately as to where the state found a way to build a tunnel to connect both of the caves. Again not sure if the black chained door was another passage into the Cave Of The Winding Stair however all caves are within the same mountain range within just hundreds of feet from one another. The cave was formed from sedimentary limestone and metamorphised limestone often known as marble being dissolved by ground water that is high in carbonic acident. When the dissolution takes places caverns were formed and with enough continuous dripping the highly mineralized ground water produced what is known as stalactites which extend down ward while the stalagmites built upward from mounds on the floor. The roads out to the caverns are still till date a little rugged and Jack was responsible for improving the roads so that he could up the amount of tourist and thrill seeker to the area. Our team find a few tunnels along our hike which later we learned were prospect holes that Mitchell mined for silver and other minerals. For many years the caves remained so dry that they thought it died as lack of rain caused the rock formations within to stop growing. However in recent years the Mojave has gotten a good amount of rain thus reactiving the cave to become alive again. At one time the entire cavern was underwater as shells and signs of ancient coral were found here. Perhaps this is what makes the location so eerie is knowing that at one time these dark tunnels were filled with water maybe even ancient sea life. I found the location to be very interesting as prior to visiting here I read about secret underground rivers a mile wide that ran underneath the Mojave. I thought to myself this may be as close as I ever get which kept within me feelings of excitement knowing that this is a very special place a possible entrance into our Hollow Earth! Jack Mitchell believed in giving out rocks found from within the cave as souveniers to his visitors today the entire cave is preserved and this tradition was put to an end.
