At one time before the gold rush Nevada City was home to a Nisenan Village named Ustumah. The area had everything the natives needed a diverse amount of plant life, creeks, mild winters, cooler summers and plentiful animal life that could be hunted such as deer. I cant imagine what the first Euro Americans thought when they set eyes on this thick blanketed forest.

Which would occur in 1849 during the California Gold Rush. Nevada the word means snow covered in Spanish a reference to the snow topped mountains in the area. While it may only sit at about 2,500 if you climb some of the hills you can see some larger peaks off in the distance. But the camp had multiple names while people called it Nevada City some referred to it later as Deer Creek Dry Diggins and even Caldwell's Upper Store.

The first Gold Tunnel or mine was on the north side of Deer Creek built around 1850. The first sawmill was also built on the creek just above town and a water wheel in 1850 constructed by Lewis & Son. By 1851 Nevada City became a very high end mining town and lead gold bearer in Nevada County. The first newspaper here was the Nevada Journal. The first cemetery was the Nevada City Pioneer Cemetery founded in 1851 behind the United Methodist Church, Nevada Counties First Denominational Church which we also visited and will have its own section on our website because of its own historical significance.

The town of Nevada was incorporated on April 19, 1856 by 1864 the word City was added to its name because of nearby the state of Nevada. Ever since then this is what its been called and so very little really has changed. In fact the former town of Coyoteville later became absorbed into Nevada City on the Northwestern end. For years I wanted to visit here and do some kind of project which is how it came to be on our website. Since then I visit Nevada City now and then its only a couple hours away from where I currently live so it is one of my more magical favorite place.

The town was a prominent settlement but also it retained Nevada Counties Seat. It had its struggles to such as multiple fires throughout the 1850's and 1860s which led to many brick structures which are found throughout downtown. Its never really stopped being a bustling community and you will notice multiple firehouses because they had to have them back in the day due to the fire risk. If you walk around the city its like stepping back in time you may see someone playing a banjo, a farmers market or antique show and plenty of hippies as well. I honestly fit in quite well here and the little shops sell all sorts of cool merchandise. Its where I bought a top hat and alien mask!

Another tidbit is the the Nevada Theatre is California's oldest operating performance venue built in 1865 and still stands proud today. In fact Mark Twain and Mötley Crüe both performed here. But the town is also full of shops, cozy hotels or lodging, boutiques, art galleries, museums and people are really nice here. I had maybe one incident with a couple who gave me the stink eye for ten minutes staring me down. Not everyone accepts my gothic appearance but I smoked a bowl out in public and people did not even care its just that kind of atmosphere.

The city literally borders the Tahoe National Forest with pine covered hills everywhere. Its not as big as it use to be back in 1850 they had around 10k residents and during the general election of 1856 nearly 2,100 ballots were cast. Many
people that lived here had plenty of children sad to say living in these hills was rough so pandemics took a toll on the younger population. At the time though the ballots casts came in third only Sacramento and San Francisco exceeded those ballots in the 1850's.

By 1965 the entire city was added to the National Register Of Historic Places this included 93 buildings, eight individual buildings and 18 state and local landmarks. It also is home to the very haunted Nevada County Hospital built in the 1860s which is also another project I worked on for our viewers because this place is unique all in itself much like the cemeteries through the city limits so that is why we put them in there own sections of our website.

What really sealed Nevada City as being a serious contender in the county for a bustling community is that for many years it was the county seat. But Grass Valley grew so large that it kind of stole some tourism away and the seat eventually was moved from here to there. I love Grass Valley to plenty of small little farms where you can pick pumpkins or buy honey or jams etc. The area is bustling but still plenty of small town charm which is why for years I made it a goal to do a story about this place so I could share it with our viewers and they could enjoy it the same way I did.

In 1849 miners pulled a small amount of pay dirt along the creek out realizing it was full of gold. When miners talked it drew in people from other camps to dry dig along the creek. In fact Herbert Hoover lived in Nevada City and was a miner here for a short time when he was younger. Also three U.S. Senators lived here William Morris Stewart, A.A. Sargent and George Hearst.

Their also was a consolidation of water companies that formed Pacific Gas & Electric Company. So PG&E's first office was located in the National Hotel. I did do a paranormal investigation at the hotel which again is another location on our site that has its own section due to its history and uniqueness within the city. This area was home to many inventions within how mining is done along with water and electricity. Today PG&E is still responsible for how Californians get their power from.

In 1853 Professor Henry Durant met with a committee in Nevada City to form an academy or at lest make plans which would be incorporated two years later as the college of California which later became Berkeley University. Many of the shops and structures you see on video or in our photos were standing back in the 1860s making this city was one the most complete gold rush towns in all of California and so the town is a giant living museum really that is why it deserves a spot on our website. Were lucky all of this is here I been to some gold rush towns only a shack remains standing!

In 1957 a David Osborn and Charles Woods moved here from Berkeley and worked with some other notable residents to craft Ordinance #338 or rather historical ordinance and adopted in 1968. This was meant to preserve the Victorian Era buildings and the architecture of the city. If it was not for these gentlemen the free way ramp would have destroyed Ott's Assay Office and the South Yuba Canal Building now the chamber of commerce. But they fought hard to have the ramp moved up to Coyote Street saving both buildings. In 1972 they purchased the Miners Foundry and dubbed it the American Victorian Museum.

While its bustling it still has small town charm given that its high enough to escape the valley heat yet low enough to avoid the heavy sierra winter snowfalls. Its also the gateway to the Yuba-Donner Scenic Byway and many rivers and lakes within the Tahoe National Forest. Another notable fact is that there are quite a few bigfoot sightings in the area and one could see why once you delve into our website edition. Their are plenty of offbeat trails surrounding the entire city and you can backpack from downtown to the wilderness in minutes.

Not only that but Nevada City is home to dozens of well known ghost stories. For example the Stonehouse Restaurant built into the hillside sits on top of one of the cities richest mines which then branches out to various tunnel systems that run under the entire town. Before it was a restaurant it was the Old Nevada Brewery and was built by Chinese Laborers and Italian Stone Masons. People have seen the ghosts of Chinese Laborers and even a little girl who walks up the stairs.

But what is even more striking or disturbing is that at one time 40 miners were murdered inside the mine or purposely blown up when they were mining below the brewery. People often hear strange creaks, ghostly footsteps and get whiffs of foul odors which could be rising up from the fissures from within the mine. So there ghosts are said to haunt this building and the grounds.

When the stone and wood building was constructed using local granite blocks from the local quarry they also dug a cave into the hillside. That way they could keep aging cask of ale cool. You could access the ale from inside
the building during the time the building covered that space which today is now the outdoor patio. But back then if you went into the cave it also connected to the mine tunnels. The same ones that men died in who were blown apart or suffocated while saying there last words in the darkness. It did not matter what gold rush town you went into their was so much anger and hate towards the Chinese other miners felt they were intruding on their gold so violence often broke out.

Nevada City was a very wealthy town but it had its ups and downs. Tuberculosis struck killing many along with pandemics. Over the years people have gone hiking in the woods around town only to never been seen again. Their were accidents in the mines and travesties as well. So it has an enriched haunted history given the fact that at one time 10k lived here. Settlers who enjoyed the brothers, opium dens, hotels, saloons, shopped at its stores and gambled. But their was a dark side to Nevada City also such as claim jumping and murder due to greed.

I heard that there was a building which was a Chinese Grocer that was haunted by multiple ghost including its alleyways. Just as I heard the theatre is haunted by ghosts of previous performers. People see apparitions sometimes heard voices out of thin air that kind of thing. Just as the Firehouse Museum we investigated which also has its own separate section on our site is said to be haunted by doors that coming flying open and that building once had a Chinese Altar of some kind. Just like the old Red Castle Inn one of the most haunted place In California where people have been touched or felt like they were being tucked in or having their hair pushed aside on their face. Then you have multiple resident ghosts of The National Hotel which we investigated also.

Nearly ever single building has at least one or more ghost stories while throughout the town are historic relics which also have rich history and are tied down to those pioneers who once utilized them. Then if you decide to hike around above town you will see foundations, remnants of hydraulic mining etc. But you will also see even today a homeless camp that
resides above the city. Along with a bridge that crosses deer creek and sways and great views of the city below if you climb Sugarloaf Mountain.

Their is something here for everyone which is why this place was so important for me to do a project on not just for our ghost town group fans or our paranormal group members. But for me it was MUST and there seems to be plenty of alien talk within the town and after my expedition I do realize that the skies are full of UFO's to or objects I cant explain. So with that being said with its rich history, sasquatch lore, UFOs and ghosts stories this is a paranormal investigators dream come true and were so happy to bring this location to our viewers so you can enjoy it the same way I did!
