National Exchange Hotel

I had just gotten done exploring downtown Nevada City in fact I was pretty hungry honestly I just ordered some brews and an appetizer at the National Exchange Hotel. I get excited to eat at hotels like this and drink because its a part of history. This is one of the oldest hotels, saloons and restaurants in the wild west. I mean this place has been around a century and half so to sit down have a few drinks its like stepping back in time.

I wish I could stay the night and really do a long paranormal investigation here but sometimes with my work it has to be fast and simple because I do not own the place. If I owned it or had a room then I could spend more time with enjoy it for what it is and its resident ghosts which there are plenty by the way. Life is simple and the funnest thing I have done on my treks is the part where you can sit down enjoy good food, drinks all while being surrounded by haunted history. Also if you roam this hotel it has so much history all the way from the old light fixtures to the walls and artifacts that are everywhere. Plus you can go out onto the balcony and enjoy views of downtown upstairs which is awesome too.
 
I think I was a bit taken back to be in an establishment that once had many guest like William Conrad, Tim Conway, Lola Montez, Mark Twain, Black Bart, Herbert Hoover, Oscar Wilde and so many others who came here to this hotel when it was a stage stop, express station, hotel and saloon. Not much has changed you can still drink at the bar, get a room or eat at the restaurant.
 
I was being goofy putting on my alien mask sitting in the restaurant nobody was around just me really so who was going to see it except for my photos that I show off to all of you viewing our website. I love gold rush country because hotels like this give a birds eye view to what its like to step back in time.
 
I was lucky enough to do an investigation although I did not get access to room 80 where a man shot himself, room 78 where a little girl died of illness or rather Elizabeth's room or room 74 where PG&E started which holds historic value. But I did investigate the halls and outside of each room taking EVP, reading etc. To really get a gist on the hauntings id say staying in a room for the night would be the best approach. Honestly, there is a bit of a strange feeling I get wandering the hotel its hard to put my finger on it its as if you know there are spirits all over but you just cant see them but you know they are there kind of thing.
 
There are some cold spots in certain places within the hotel and some of the rooms are not occupied and I thought I heard mumbling or talking in fact the haunted rooms were all probably available if I wanted to rent them but I had a nice place up the road I was staying at so it was a no go.
 
Honestly, it was bizarre because hardly anyone was here despite Nevada City bustling. The restaurant was empty, hotel was empty and the balcony was pretty busy but people go there because it has a nice view of downtown and of this peak that I would later climb that evening.
 
I had a drink and some appetizers did an investigation and made it my own little project. It was quiet here which is good if you want to absorb the history. This place has been around for a century and a half built by masons an the place where travelers of the gold rush came to converse and mingle. Some patrons came through town stayed a night or two then moved onto the next town.
 
Its just the type of place that has a few resident ghost and is rich in history it really has not changed much its just no longer an express or stage stop station. But you can still stay the night, have a drink or dine here and its kind of eerie  because you know that at night when it really quiets down that is when most of the haunts occur.
 
Also there is a piano in the parlor or bar area which today sometimes plays by itself or has the ghost of a man smoking cigars and sometimes a woman dressed Victorian in this area. The piano seems to be a focal point at the hotel you cant miss it. But after all the exploring I did up at the old asylum, cemeteries and roaming downtown this was a nice stop to relax and slow down a little before I moved onto the fire station across the street for our next investigation!

Call it whatever you want a reflection maybe but the sun was not out it was overcast. The hotel does have at least two to three haunted rooms including on the upper floor. Could this be something of the supernatural world? Sure its possible looks clearly like ectoplasm or energy to me high up around the upper balcony but then again who knows might be a fluke. Over the years this hotel has a long standing series of ghost stories would love to experience them and you can if you ever decide to stay the night in one of its haunted hotel rooms!
