In
Downtown Nevada City is The National Exchange Hotel and its one of the
oldest operated hotels west of the Rockies. When it first opened they
called it Bicknell Block. It had very few closures perhaps one of them
was in 1863 for a short period of time due to a fire but other then
that its been in business for over 150 years making it a really unique
location to visit.In
1894 they added a grad balcony out front on the second story
overlooking downtown. In 1898 a man from San Francisco by the name of
John J. Jackson claimed a meeting took place in 1898 involving the
creation of the Pacific Gas and Electric Company. The meeting was held
in the downstairs parlor where electric power was becoming a new way of
living.
The
hotel mainly catered to the miners back in the 1850's but it was also
used as a stagecoach stop, telegraph, mail and express center. This
probably was vital to Nevada Cities growth. Not much has changed
virtually the hotel today looks as it did years ago. Its as if your
stepping back into time which is why I love visiting places in gold
country like this.
The
hotels architect had the last name Todd so when he built it he built it
for a dentist with the last name Bicknell in case you are wondering how
it got its original name. Its one of the longest operating hotels in
the state of California so you can understand how important it is so
the scientific research I do as a paranormal investigator.
It
was the main communication hub for the town and for transportation.
Wagons would stop here all day dropping off passenger or even freight.
Some of the celebrities that visit here were Black Bart a bandit, Mark
Twain, Lotta Crabtree, William Conrad, Tim Conway, Andrew Johnson,
David Janssen, Jerry Brown former governor, Ann Baxter, Martha Raye,
Lindsay Wagner, Forrest Tucker, Jane Wyman, Melvin Belli, Oscar Wilde,
Herbert Hoover, Lola Montez dancer and mistress to a king and so many
more.The
hotel is recognized by the ancient and honorable order of E. Clampus
Vitus a freemasonry group. You can see the symbols surrounding the
property on the sidewalks. Everything looks nearly the same dining room
tables have coal oil lamps and the piano can still be found in the
lobby which was exported on a ship that went all the way around the
Cape Horn. Everything is as it was during the gold rush days they have
kept the history in tact so its like stepping back in time the moment
you enter here something to value if your a history buff such as myself.
The
hotel has numerous hauntings and ghost stories as well. This is why I
was excited to get a place like this on our site because who doesn't
like a good resident ghost story? People often see shadow figures, hear
voices and capture EVPs of disembodied voices throughout the years so
its a really active place. Some folks over the years have seen men
dressed in 1800's attire while sitting in the lobby smoking cigars.
Others have saw a Victorian Era woman wearing a dress in the bar area.
The grand piano is said to sometimes play at night by itself while
others have heard strange noises or felt odd cold spots.
Many
of the rooms here are haunted while they say PG&E started in room
74 others say it started at the bar and parlor. However, some say room
74 people have saw the face of a man up in the window. But room
#80 supposedly is where a man shot and killed himself which SWAT was
involved but supposedly that room is not haunted but that is a
difficult room to stay in if you know someone offed themselves in it.
The really famous room even the one I visited is room #78 where a
little girl died of an illness perhaps mumps and supposedly her photos
hangs in the room. The little girls name is Elizabeth and patrons have
felt her they say in the room which has cold spots and others have
heard banging inside the room. People say if you stare at her photo the
blue eyes follow you around pretty eerie right? If
that is enough an apparition once was saw walking up he stairwell with
black pants, black vest, nice trimmed hair and a white shirt on.
Apparently that ghost disappeared after taking a few steps. Often the
bar people ill feel a cool odd breeze as if something is passing by and
sometimes doors open on their own. Other times people here what sounds
like someone trying to get out often by this one door that leads to
nowhere sometimes noises lasting almost fifteen minutes as if something
is banging and clawing to get out.
One
person made a claim once that a lady inside a painting or picture came
out of it. Other times when nobody hears a ghost they hear the bats in
the attic that are often seen flying away from the hotel at dusk. Their
was once a wedding and they said bats flew out of the attic which I
think is pretty cool. The bats today are left alone to roost and I am
fine with that it just adds to the hotels eeriness. Most of the
experiences seem to be more noticeable by the folks who work here since
they have to close up at night and lock up.
In
1882 the Rector Brothers john and Bayliss purchased the hotel and
actually owned it until they both died a year apart in 1914 and 1915.
Many of the furnishing you see in the rooms and around the hotel came
from the later 1800s at the time the brothers owned it. At that time
this hotel had no central heating or even electricity. The rooms all
had fireplaces if you were cold you just used an extra blanket to stay
warm.
Fred
C. Worth was a manager at the hotel for the brothers family so he
modernized the hotel around 1925. In 1946 George Murphy a native of the
San Juan Ridge bought the hotel and installed Dean McGrath as a
resident manager that lived on site. After that a man by the name of
Coleman took over its ownership in September of 1979.
So
its rich in history and its something I really felt would be a great
edition for our website. I always try to put locations on our site that
are rich, fun, intriguing etc. But even I captured a couple of EVP on
my investigation and its all I need to really declare this location as
one of the more haunted locations in all of Nevada City. The food is
great, everything is well preserved and its not the national register
of historic places. So its a must stop to visit in gold country and I
am glad to have gotten to experience it and share it with our viewers!
