The Singatse Mountains reside between the Pinenut and Wassuk Range. These mountains and hills are rich in copper. Miners begin staking claims in the 1860's the problem is nobody knew how to smelt the copper till later in the 1800's and into the early 1900's. Therefore allot of boom towns rose up down some of these old wagon trails such as Nordyke, Wilson Canyon, Ludwig, Hudson, Thompson Smelter, Wabuska, Colony and of course Mason just to name a few. Ill take our viewers jeeping into the mountains of this range where eventually after trial and error I park right in front of the monolithic Blue Stone Mine entrance. At one time the Nevada Copper Belt Railroad traversed this small range having copper ore loaded to its cars to be unloaded to a local smelter for processing other times local ranchers, school children and other passengers simply used this shortline to visit small towns such as Mason. Today upon pulling up to the town site not much exist most of the newer part of town resides in the valley but up in this hills are remnants of the mill, mines and a few other foundations which are reminders as to what was! You can see the giant bluestone mill ruins kind of is reminiscent of what an ancient temple would like in a far off land. This is a beautiful mountain range so if you like beautiful desertscapes in the early morning of sunrise then your going to enjoy this little journey. You will also get to us drive right past one of the largest copper open pit mines in the country the Mason Valley Mines have been in operation for over a century and at one time they had other claims in the district and even connected with the Bluestone Mine underground.

We spent most of our time exploring the tiers of the Bluestone Mill which is surrounded by copper ore that was brought out of the deep Bluestone Miners. This mill was short lived about seven months although it had a smelter it could not compete with the one at another ghost town north of here called Thompson Smelter therefore eventually most ore brought out of the mines were eventually milled elsewhere.This was an impressive mill really the heartbeat of old Mason. Captain Delamar yes the founder of the town known as the widow maker where almost all the miners died of silicosis came to Mason to invest money in his copper mines and smeltering it. A concentrating plant, stores, cyanide mill, twenty claims, homes and over 350 men built fortunes in these hills and lives. While the mill remained abandoned mining continued to occur here all the way up until WWII. Today below the mill in Mason Valley is a small ranching community that was born from this early towns success its peak years being 1916. If you look below the mill you can see a rusty water tank perhaps a cyanide tank used in ore processing. You can see various sets of ruins also and open areas where the town once stood. The mill is really this ghost towns biggest treasure you can see its graffitied up even riddled with bullet holes. Towards the end of the video we do some target practicing of our own with my sons new bebe pump action rifle eventually shattering a bottle just building some good memories with my family. Also at one point in the video clip around the 8:00 minute mark I get some high EMF Gauss readings as it was fluctuating. You will see me hold it still as the needle bounces around. At first we thought it was our cheap metal detector but our gauss reader does not detect or pick up on it I know this because we have ran similar test before could be copper quartz or perhaps some unseen energies of the dearly departed.

When you hike around these hills you will see eroded sandstone rock formations, deep canyons, dump piles so massive that you can say beyond a doubt that many miles of tunnels reside under the Bluestone Mill site or ghost town for that matter. Will take you on a journey nearly at the top of the Singatse Mountains where we will show you cityscapes of the town below and the entire Yerington Mining District. Their is a pile of bricks also we locate and climb around on probably remnants of the smokestack for the smelter. Their is a few dump piles even a wood tailing many of the mines here connected underground. Mining begin in the 1860's really was not in full force till Captain Delamar purchased some claims in these very hills which led to a copper boom. This was a sophisticated operation their was a 6000' tram that had electrical locomotives that carried ore buckets which then dumped the ore into these bins that would be loaded onto train cars. Easily in an hour a 100 tons of ore could exported where once it made its way to the trains could be smelted up at Thompson a few miles to the north. Near the end of this video ill take you in the Bluestone Mine sadly after a couple hundred feet and over a dump pile of rocks we reach a dead end in a chamber full of beer bottles. This mine use to be three levels in depth reaching deep underground to depths of 600 below. Ill also take you to some new areas of the Blue Stone Mill that you did not see in the first clip and in the distance you can see the vault as well as transformer building for the tram system.
The final leg of our journey would be spent at the transformer building ruins which served as a powerhouse for the electrical locomotives which carried buckets of ore on a 6 thousand long tram system throughout these hills. Each locomotive probably had about 12 cars or buckets lined up at the entrance of each mine where the ore could be loaded onto a train which then took the ore down to the valley floor where it made its way to the Copper Belt Railroad. This stone building is truly a marvel their is even a memorial of a dirt biker who passed away. The building is crumbling my son and I try to throw rocks through this window for a bit I entertained him till we decided to move onto something else. You can see also the town below this building quite well in the valley through the giant openings found throughout the building. Our last leg of this adventure would be spent visiting the copper vault and a few foundations. This really is all that remains of the old part of Mason besides the Bluestone Mill. While the mining operation huge at one time they could process up to 600 perhaps a 1000 tons a day below this building thanks to the tram system transporting ore for the smelter was done swiftly. Anything copper ore processed or even earnings could be stored in this massive stone vault. Our day spent in Mason was memorable however it was in the middle of December so a storm was brewing it was getting cold in the 30's and it was time for us to drive away leaving old Mason behind our backs to the wind!
