The Maggie's Peak region was home to the Washoe for thousands of years as hunting grounds and in the warmer months a place for the tribe to thrive. Even as you hike in the forest surrounding the mountain Grinding Rocks are visible which are signs that villages once existed. If you were to take into consideration the fact that this region is flourishing with many bodies of water we can theorize that it was used also for fishing which was used as a food subsistence.  Not much has changed since the natives called this place home for hundreds of years even today much of it looks the same with majestic peaks and pristine glacier formed lakes.

When the Europeans came to the region they called the Desolation Wilderness "Devils Valley" and used it for grazing cattle. The crest of the Sierra Nevada runs right though this region just west of Lake Tahoe. An area part of the ElDorado National Forest known for its Bigfoot Lore and other strange happenings which is why I enjoy hiking there so much.  Honestly what is there not to like when you have nearly 64,000 acres to explore which includes the Maggie's Peak area.

Rumor has it that Maggie's Peaks were named after a barmaid at the Tahoe Tavern in the 1800's. I am not sure if that story holds any truth however from either summit has some of the best viewing areas of Lake Tahoe, Desolation Wilderness, Emerald Bay, Jobs Peak, Cave Rock, Slide Mountain, Mt. Tallac, Rubicon Trails Emerald Point, Eagle Falls's Vikingholmes Castle/Fannette Island and Genoa Peak.  Therefore I highly recommend that if your going to ever set off on a hike in the Tahoe region start it off on the Bayview Trail which can either take you into Desolation Valley or you can summit Maggie's Peak for great views of everything I have hot linked above.  If you ever seen the show Bonanza you can see in the introductory credits the sisters in the background. They are in the backdrop as the main characters are introduced riding white horses across the lake in a meadow. So in reality this was the first time the peaks had made public television and drew interest from hikers from all over the world to summit them.

What makes this region so special is that there are so many great lakes that are viewable from the summit such as Fallen Leaf, Eagle, Cascade, Granite and Fontanillis Lakes just to name a few. Perhaps how the Bay View trail had gotten its name is the fact that it meanders above the bay. The same bay which contains Lake Tahoe's only island and the beautiful Vikingsholm Castle.

Just below the two peaks is a small glacial lake known as Granite Lake although not unique in anyway its what is left of an era one that included an ice age and glaciers a mile thick. Those glaciers carved out most of the area if you were to watched some of our videos taken in Cascade Canyon which shows the scarring within the walls and granite slabs caused by glacial movement.

Beyond Maggie's Peaks is the Desolation Wilderness so one can enjoy wonderful views of the Crystal Mountains and many other lakes that are visible from the peak. However I do plan on visiting some of those lakes by hiking the Bayview Trail which appears to go between Maggie's Peaks and down into the valley where they are more clearly visible and may contain bigfoot evidence along there very own shores.

Maggie's Peaks vary in height as the one to the North is about 8,499' while the one to the South stands at about 8,699' so when you start on the trail head you have nearly 2000' of elevation gain.  The first mile gives you some really great views of bay till you reach granite lake where you can take a nice cool dip. I was not so fortunate my first expedition as while eating my lunch I see two nude people getting it on in the buck lol.

Besides human oddities I have to say this area offers UFO sightings, Bigfoot Lore and other Forteana Phenomena. For example I found what appears to be an ancient alien boot impression in one of the granite rocks. I believe based on my expeditions that this area is flourishing with the strange; combine that with the scenic beauty and this truly is a remarkable region to journey at. Just imagine that just below the peak are stories of the Maiden, Giants, Water Babies and the even the legendary Tessie a lake monster often seen in the icy waters below Maggie's Peaks.

Within the area are also hikes to Eagle and Cascade Falls both can be dangerous if you get to close to them especially in Spring.  We tried to reach Cascade Falls twice however the water in the Fall is barely trickling. Along the way especially in Cascade Canyon the area is full of volcanic domes, massive granite rock slabs and massive peaks like Maggie that overshadow the area.

Besides the point of this being one of the prettiest hikes and viewing areas of the region in my opinion this place is a must. Whether your looking for nature, scenic wonders, paranormal strangeness, great views of Tahoe or history it has it all. I spent a good couple of years deciding how and when our team would do this expedition. I actually dreamed about journeying here for a couple years so keep in mind when you view the videos and photos we really poured our heart and souls into these expeditions! Why? Simply because we want our viewers to feel they are a part of this very special project.

Afterall not only did we find the strange set of toes in the soft Earth but also photographing a UFO and finding what could be an ancient alien boot print really reveals that this area is full of oddities just awaiting discovery. The next time I return to Maggie's Peak it will not be to cliff or rock climb but ill descend on the back side of her to explore Devil's Valley so that some of the lakes you see in our albums ill be able to embrace their beautiful shorelines. So with that in mind consider many good things are to come and that the Maggie's Peak area perhaps has some secrets of its own awaiting discovery!
