and the town of Volcano in search of Indian Diggins. The weather was starting to
warm up but it surely was quite chilly in the morning. I was looking forward to
the next leg of our expedition which would take place in Clinton which was an
old placer mining town and stage stop. Its a pretty little town with hills,
woods, flowers everywhere and nature. But so very little remains of the
historical remnants which sprang up below the butte like many other similar
sister mining camps.
It had felt like ages since we
were up here honestly I almost rented a cozy little home back in 2008 up here. I
did not get it but it was historic, quaint with views, hardwood floors and a
nice fireplace. I would have lived here at the time if I had gotten it for sure.
So coming back here felt right just because I already been up here but back then
I had no idea of the history that once graced this place.
I was planning on doing a project
here actually the old historic cemetery and a church foundation. The church
itself was moved or relocated but supposedly the cemetery still exist. Well so I
thought when I got downtown Clinton there was a few new homes, few small horse
properties and a memorial plaque where these crossroads meet which talk about
the town. It states that the old church had been restored in 2003 and then moved
to the Kennedy Mine in Jackson. It did not mention much about the cemetery other
then it would have stood near or next to this church. Behind the memorial
appears to be an open area but it was now a small little farm that probably is
where it was.
All these little communities were
mining camps and towns just below or rather surrounding Jackson Butte. They do
hold some historic significance while others simply have been wiped off the map
due to fires or just no longer being viable places to live due to the gold
running out. But the gold rush drew in many miners to the region or Argonauts.
But they left as fast as they came and new housing has overtaken much of the
area. What use to be small towns or mine camps today are just small residential
communities and since in order to get to the butte I had to go through Clinton I
figured it was worth the stop.
I did try going up on this road in
back of the woods to see if I could locate anything to explore. But it turned
out to be some hills have eyes property and well there was some wild turkeys
running around. Turkeys up in this area are common years ago I hit one with my
car in the ass and it went flying. Yes it lived it only lost some tail feathers
but Clinton has quite a few of them just waddling along. I wish we could have
found the cemetery but who knows maybe its been moved or simply has been
forgotten. The brothers who were major prominent residents in this town once
owned a mine that I explored back in 2008. So they did have influence in the
region sadly Clinton is overgrown, woodsy and people are buying up land to build
homes here so you could say the history of what was is long
gone.
Jackson Mountain
Butte
We left Clinton in the wind and
begin to ascend towards the butte. As you get closer you will start to hill some
smaller rolling hills which is a great area for ranching also. Their are quite a
few historic ranches and vineyards along the way. Its very rural around the
butte but if Jackson and towns like Clinton expand you can bank on this area
becoming a little less private. No less its a bit intimidating driving back here
there are signs saying watching out for burglars and even one that warns you of
Cranky people prior to ascending to the top of the butte.
Honestly, you would expect no
crime to take place in such a beautiful scenic area and so many private old
farms. But the truth is Jackson California has quite a bit of drama and I know
because I was homeless there in 2008. I seen fights, some dude was missing
fingers, drug deals, hookers, theft and everything in between. I was a victim of
crime there had my windows smashed out on my car once and in or around 2011 I
was fishing in Jackson when someone broke into my truck stole my wallet, credit
cards, beat up paranormal gear and my gfs deceased grandmothers necklace. I hate
this place love the history but I hate the fact that every time I visit Jackson
there is some sort of drama here.
So I was a bit scared to return
let alone visit the butte because I was not sure if id run into trouble. I mean
when I was robbed I had no gas money to go home two hours to the east so I was
leery. But I wanted to return to the butte because back in 2008 I stood on the
summit enjoyed the views but did not get to spend much time here and thought
that it would be a great addition as well as exploration for our website. My
family was a bit worried because when you see signs on the outskirts of town
talking about cranky people and burglars it sounds all the less inviting. But
the butte is in a league of its own and definitely away from the
drama.
It stands at over 2k it can be
seen from all over the region whether your in Jackson or you make your way up to
Sutters Creek. Its an awesome geological landmark and as you get closer there
are patches of forest and hill sides with deer grazing on them. The butte looks
like nothing up close as it does from far away really. But that is because you
start to ascend towards it miles ahead of time just outside of town. Then there
is one final road you take to the top and can park up at the gate. I noticed
this time around there was more residential homes up near here and even seen a
few no trespassing signs.
There is a massive antenna on the
top of the butte also and sub station. Perhaps this is why they do not want
folks up here. But back in the day people came up here to make out, party, hike
or even camp. My guess is that its no longer a popular little hang out spot
probably because people are buying more property up building homes. Its kind of
intimidating to take a private road that is so narrow you cant really turn
around here. I parked up at the gate Tammy stayed back to keep an eye out on the
vehicle. I cant say I blame her for doing so she got stung up here so she has no
interest in anything Jackson.
Jarrod and I set off to explore
the summit keep in mind this is an extinct volcano its massive with steep
hillsides covered in grass and sharp volcanic rocks. The summit does have a few
trees here and there but its not overly wooded. If you go past the gate there is
an old sub station or radio station in ruins. Its just merely a shall but its
still worth exploring and checking out. I like abandoned buildings especially
when they have a view like this. I mean you can see from the summit Stockton,
Sacramento, Folsom Lake, Pardee Reservoir, Mokelumne River, Cityscapes of
Jackson, High Sierras and the list goes on and on.
It was still drought season so for
tens of miles surrounding the butte are hillsides of just brown meadows. Most of
the hills and pastures were just dead brown grass including the grass on the
butte. The only green we seen were trees. But it was really dry not much rain up
here and we just missed a fire which killed a couple folks on the other side of
the butte. But you think man this is scary if you had heat lightening or some
careless smoker it would all go up flames in minutes and it did recently.
Jarrod and I took a road higher up
the summit is tiered but the top tier has a massive radio sub station with an
antenna. The views are even better as we went probably another hundred feet
above the abandoned com's station. The nature up here is amazing to there are
flowers, butterflies, hawks and lizards. All in all its a relaxing little summit
but I did not want to stay parked up here to long afterall its a gated road with
no way to turn around so I was not looking for trouble or to be blocked in by
some ass hat punks.
From the summit you can see many
historic sites in Jackson like the Kennedy Mine Office for example and all of
downtown. Jackson has over 40 historical buildings from the civil war era and
even some Victorian Mansion. I am sure at one time this was an ideal wholesome
town to live in but according to a friend of mine she said that changed when
people starting coming up from the big city. Then they built the casino and
opened it when I was there in 2008 so it drew in drama. My plan was to enjoy the
scenic wonders atop of the butte but I had no plans on descending into
town.
Its very quiet up here and the
weather was getting warm out I mean afterall by the afternoon on a June day we
were hitting around 80 id say so very nice weather. I bet you there are lava
tubes within the mountain or a cave system. If you stand on the summit it almost
is so steep in some areas that it looks straight down. You could see all sorts
of homes around the butte with swimming pools and vineyards for miles that was
pretty awesome to. This is really a doable summit whether you hiked it or drive
to the top.
We had to get going though I still
had to finish up New Chicago and then move onto Dry Town. These are sister towns
of Jackson. They were once thriving but Jackson kind of took over as reigning
champion while New Chicago is ghost town with ranches today. I was getting
hungry had plans to have a nice cook out soon but we still had more work to do
so I made my way off the butte and passed through Jackson
unscathed.
Just as you leave Jackson they
built in recent years across from the Kennedy a historic little pull off which a
few plaques, map of historic sites of interest in the area, old mining equipment
and a few other little treats. I did stop here but its on the highway so lots of
traffic but just across the road over this huge valley you can see the butte off
in the distance and of course the head frame for the Kennedy Mine. I have roamed
around the Kennedy mine found a hidden dam, foundations, water wheels made out
of wood and a bunch of old historic structures as well as a mine I once explored
underground.
I guess you can say I took a walk
down memory lane being here brought back memories. The stone slab with the
plaque about Jackson was moved from across the road on this hill now to this
parking area. They have benches and such you can have a picnic passing through
learn about the local history. I mean when it comes to preserving history
Jackson has it and they do a good job at it. But I felt uncomfortable being here
and honestly I did not spend much time in Jackson or even exploring the butte
because I was stung here more then once. I have so many mixed memories living up
here ranging from sleeping behind the local church to living in that shelter
that treated me horribly all the way to the people who victimized me with there
crimes.
But my experience here this time
was not a bad one I just did not stick around long enough to have one. I wanted
to share a bonding experience with my son because when he was little he never
got to explore or see the butte he does not even remember much about Jackson. No
less this was a fun little adventure like I said a walk down memory lane and my
return to Jackson was more then memorable just being with my family and being
able to work on this really cool project for our fans. We were only about five
hours from sunset so it was time to move onto a place known as New Chicago which
would be our next project a old ranching community but once a mining town long
gone!
Peace,
Lord Rick |

| Before you make the final ascension to the top of
the butte you will be greeted with the sign which tells you to slow down because
its a narrow road with creatures and critters along with cranky people. While we
never seen a human soul up here I am very sure that some of the folks are
probably tired of people coming up here to cause issues. If you do not believe
me just see the photo below that has a sign saying beware burglars in this area.
I have never seen so much crime in such a rural area which further validates to
use caution if you decide you want to go up to Jackson to see the butte or any
of the other historical sites in the area. As an explorer it is my job to teach other explorers when and where to exercise caution by giving them tools they can work with. The locals are paranoid not because you or I are up to no good but because over the past decade Jackson has had quite a few seedy people moving up here from the city dealing drugs, stealing and abusing these locations that are meant to be preserved. I know I lived up here back in 2008 and I never seen so much drama go on till I spent a few months camping below this butte seriously! I am not saying everyone is like that but if you live out in the country you live in the country because you want peace and quiet. But it appears that some of the locals are just fed up and I do not blame them so next time my haters decide to contest what I just said well think again because for some reason I have a few stalkers from Jackson telling me that I am liar. If I am lying about theft in the Jackson area then why are there signs everywhere like the one below? Farmers are not hanging signs on there property in the middle of nowhere unless their was not some sort of issues happening in or around the butte area. |

| Clinton
was a small mining town and stage stop below Jackson Butte. It is a
prime example of one of the many smaller communities that exist today
that surround this geological feature which at one time were mining
camps. You would never know Clintons history if it were not for this
plaque which stands near the towns epicenter. However, the town is long
gone therefore this bustling community has transitioned into rural
housing and horse property. Before I went up to the top of the butte I
did stop in Clinton to do some exploring. Most of gold country
surrounds Mountain Butte which is today an extinct volcano where the
miners during the gold rush discovered gold mainly placer gold in this
area. The gold would wash down the sides of the butte into the creeks
and river nearby. Clinton (formerly, Sarahville, Sarahsville, and Lincoln) is a small town in Amador County, California. It is located 2.5 miles (4.0 km) south of Pine Grove,at an elevation of 1972 feet (601 m). Clinton was the center of a placer mining community during the 1850s and of quartz mining as late as the 1880s. This town once decided Amador County elections as its votes were always counted last. Clinton is registered as a California Historical Landmark. A post office operated at Clinton from 1856 to 1859. Nowadays, Clinton is a picturesque little town made up of an assemblage of homes and historic buildings around the center of town. It has a population of about 45. |
