Nothing is more entertaining then to stop at the old shoe tree located near historic Middlegate. Their are a few in the west but this is one of the best as the shoes thrown up on the limbs of this Ione Cottonwood have seemed to become that of art.

It is a strange site how it all started who knows but I heard that on the night of a couples wedding they had gotten into some kind of fight and tossed the first set up into the tree.  Urban legends are great but my guess would be is someone started it and the rest all followed.

This perhaps is one of the funner sites that can be seen along highway 50 that cost nothing but a few moments of your time. Many of the shoes are on the ground not everyone of them found a limb and the ones that did have blown down.

The Butterfield Overland stations were approved by congress in 1857. The route was altered from its southerly route to a more centralized one during the Civil War that begin in Missouri all the way to the west Californian coast. This station was built in 1861 they were designed to aid travelers in their journeys such as watering down the horses, repairing stage coaches, providing them with a meal, shelter and thus numerous stage stops like the ruins of this one you see became abundant. During the 1860's stagecoach travel became very popular as mail, freight, valuables, pets and goods were hauled on the Overland route. Travel was tedious with dust storms, extreme heat, cold, snow, rain, outlaws and hostile Indian tribes. Stations provided some level of safety for these pioneers who may have made this 23 day trek. While the stations tenants lived a life that lacked luxury they had to have goods imported or hunt for their food. More then off such stations became the victim of Indian raids therefore the tenants had to have gun, slept on a dirt floor, spent many cold nights exposed to the elements and tended to their own basic survival. This massive station may have been a headquarters for the Overland Route as it had a guest room, two bedrooms, living area, two corrals, stables, barn, storage area, blacksmith, three fireplaces, gun ports for protection and kitchen. The employees who lived here did so for months at a time and ate here. Leaving the station meant being killed by the natives, wilderness or even a pack of wolves. Eventually Wells, Fargo & Company took over this route. However when the Transcontinental Railroad came to be this ended the need for the Overland Route or its stations in 1869 when this station was abandoned.

This telegraph station was built sometime in 1861 and was a fairly large complex. Just a quarter mile away from the Overland Station pioneers within seconds could send their loved ones messages on the road in a matter of seconds. Samuel F.B. Morse invented his Morse Code which would be implemented into the wires from Omaha Nebraska all the way up to Carson City which was approved for in 1860 by Congress. Just four days after the first telegraph message was sent out the Pony Express folded for good because telegraph repeater stations like this one considerably reduced the time it took to send a message from one side of the country to the other. This station would only remain open till about 1869 that is because the telegraph lines were relocated to follow the transcontinental nearby which often passed major towns. Life was as difficult being a tenant at the telegraph station as it was being employed by other ones. Their were no luxuries you spent long hot days caring for your basic needs and at night huddling around a small fire. It was a lonely life and generally this station would have employed two to possibly three men. This high speed link was very expensive perhaps 75 cents a word and simply pioneers just did not have the funds to afford it most of the time unless you were wealthy. On a cold lonely night one can imagine that not much protected you from becoming food for the wolves except your colt side arm and your will to want to survive.

Everything you need to know about the Pony Express can be found here as I give everyone a historical run down. However if you want a more in depth one make sure you visit the link below. Although short lived the Pony Express was for the brave men who dared to venture into the heart of the west delivering thousands of messages. You will hear about Pony Bobs legendary ride, stories about the Indian wars which shook the express and learn a little more history about the historical value of the Cold Springs Station area. Behind the kiosk is a trail which eventually takes you out to one of the grandest stations in the wild west. I was thrilled with great anticipation read such an enriched history then being in the center of it all where the wild west was born. The Pony Express helped shape communication within the heart of the west so that pioneers and business so that nobody was left out of the dark as it was the new frontier. The Cold Springs area also known as Rock Peak is a heritage site of the American west often overlooked by those who traverse highway 50 never looking back twice to understand that this was a place of bravery, war, death, tragedy and great feats. The men who were employed at these stations had to hunt for their food, drink water from the creek, tend to the livestock, horses and each other. Only one mail pouch was lost on the Pony Express and couriers traveled enough distances to gallop around the world 20 times over.

This special video are clips from our hike into the foothills of the Desatoya Mountains where the Pony Express Station resides. Overshadowed by the monolithic Desatoya Peak this region of Nevada has some of the best scenic beauty in the state as I have included at the end of the movie a series of scenic photos taken in the area on my journey. We started off on our journey with it being overcast till not one but two rainbows had appeared. This is a special area because it is wear the high desert and the Toiyabe National Forest meet. At one time this very area we traverse was home to some of the largest wolves in the country who would howl outside the very stations we were visiting. As you can see their is nothing but wilderness here and many died trying to cross it back in the day. While hostile Indians and wolves were a major problem here sometimes mother natures had gotten the best of you.

All you can see on this journey is mountains surrounding us 360 degrees but do not let its beauty fool you this frontier is like no other as we adventure to the Pony Express Station one of the finest every built as we come over a hill seeing it from afar.  Let me take you on this journey join me and enjoy the beautiful snowy Desatoya Mountains. Shoshone and Paiute Country is some of the most beautiful in the western half of the US and to be standing before it felt like we were in an outdoor cathedral of pretty views and serenity. Nothing however is more beautiful then seeing this old Pony Express Station off afar with massive cliffs that back drop over it. These grounds are ancient anything could be up in those mountains UFOs, Bigfoot, hidden caverns or just the ghosts of the men who died of a horrible death in this vast expanse.

This Pony Express station was built in the late winter of 1859 or early Spring of 1860 and was one of the most prestigious serving as a major hub along this mail spur. It was built along rock creek so that the station masters along with the couriers had a sustainable location to water down their horses. This station overshadowed by the Desatoya Mountains built out of native volcanic rock offered limited protection against multiple Indian raids. During the Paiute Indian Wars its station master was killed in addition to other travesties that occurred here such as attacks by giant wolves or even an accidental shooting. Perhaps this mail line was never meant to be as it was always in the red and when the telegraph came to be it put the Pony Express out of business in just a few days. After the wars this station was renovated as windows were transitioned into gun ports. It had a living quarters area with a fireplace, blacksmith, livery, barn, storage area, corral and area set aside for hay. Being a station master was lonely as couriers would ride for about 35 miles to the next station handing the mail off to the next courier. This station played a huge role in Pony Bob Haslam's legendary ride where he escaped death by hours if not minutes. He road his horse to multiple stations delivering mail during the Paiute uprising that led to a series of stations being raided leading to death, fires and even all there horses being taken. Pony Bob road his horse 380 miles warning other stations of the coming doom delivering the mail in just 36 hours making him a legend for the fastest and longest rider of the Pony Express. This station did not have a roof it may have gotten a thatch or canvas one towards the end of its demise but the men slept on the dirt desert floor, cooked in the living quarters and braved the great outdoors. This station was massive about 160' x 51' give or take and was considered one of the more finer stations with timeless views. The men often played cards or drank to pass time even though it was not permitted.

As we left the old Pony Express headquarters we were left with scenic views of the Augusta Mountains leaving behind Desatoya Peak that overshadowed us. We would traverse a massive expanse once underwater by the ancient Lahontan sea. We had just witnessed with our own eyes an Overland Stage, Transcontinental and Pony Express Station. Each site told a story as we just ventured to some of the greatest Nevadan heritage sites in the state and perhaps the finest preserved stone ruins we had ever seen. We were in the great basin heading north where we would intersect with the loneliest highway in America. The expanse is full of sage brush and other desert fauna. One can imagine how harsh this expanse can be in the dead of winter or in the middle of summer. As rattle snakes, wolves, coyotes, scorpions and the elements met some weary travelers demise. For me Cold Springs Station was more then just a few piles of rocks it one of the most relevant western cultural sites in the west.
