The planning for a new cathedral began under the authority of Archbishop Peter Richard Kenrick in the 1870's and 1880's in which a fund was created along with an organization that included local businessmen, Bishop Patrick John Ryan and Archbishop Kenrick. At the time they proposed it to be built on a city block bounded by 22nd and 23rd Streets and by Pine and Chestnut Streets at a location east of the actual construction site today.

In 1905 there were plans for a new Cathedral for the Archdiocese of Saint Louis were being discussed and underway to make the project come to the light. Archbishop Glennon predecessor Archbishop Jon J. Kain purchased some property for the new cathedral at the corner of Lindell and Newstead. But a tornado hit the area draining the treasury for the project and he also had health issues. When he died he had given his entire personal estate and all his wealth to go to the cathedrals construction fund.

To build the new cathedral it would take at least a sum of 1,000,000 and that would not even be the final cost that was just the cost for the building. The cathedral would still have to be furnished and designed internally as well. But George Barnett came up with a Byzantine and Romanesque design and by May 1, 1907 construction begin. It would take at least 80 years of upgrades and ongoing work to complete the cathedral you see today in our photos post on our site.

In October 18, 1908 the Apostolic Delegate Archbishop Diomede Falconio laid the cornerstone which was dedicated to the Victorious Christ and Saint Louis IX King of France the patron saint of the city. The ceremony was attended and observed by members of all 77 Saint Louis Parishes who joined in procession at this site. It still would take many years before the first mass took place which was in 1914 and even then the consecration of the church would not take place till June 29, 1926.

As the structure was being built over the years the Tiffany and Company of New York began to work on two chapels on the west side of the building. Then eventually he high altar and this altar was a gift of Mr. and Mrs. William Cullen McBride whose daughter Kathleen would become the new Cathedrals first bride. In fact the first wedding took place in 1914 here just two days after the cathedrals first Holy Mass which would be completed in the new temple. Problem is that it still was not completed fully however the first Mass was celebrated six years to the date after the first cornerstone was laid.

Slowly the cathedral was gifted with more features for example in 1915 a new Kilgen organ which is now displayed in the museum below was dedicated. The Archbishop presided over the first Solemn Mass Celebrated the new High Altar on All Souls Day in 1916 and in 1917 the Blessed Sacrament Chapel was used for the first time. Its bronze gates first appeared at the Austrian exhibit at the Saint Louis 1904 Worlds Fair.

The Mosaics were set up by a German firm of August Wagner who installed them. They set up a business in St. Louis known as the Ravenna Mosaic Company. A Paul Heuduck designed all the red and gold ones of the transept galleries then completed the Arch of Triumph and Arch of Creation followed by the designs you see under the main dome and Sanctuary Dome. In fact the cathedral is known for its large mosaics some of the largest in the western hemisphere and for its burial crypts below the church. I did not get to go to the crypts I guess that I missed out on it during my two visits but the crypts contain some of the previous clergy members.

Even still it would not be till 1988 when all the mosaics were completed I mean this cathedral was years in the making it did not happen over a short time. When consecration took place it was a big deal in the St. Louis area. The Centennial of the creation of the Diocese of Saint Louis saw 59 archbishops and priest gathering for the ceremony including John Cardinal Bonzano, an Apostolic Delegate to the United States. At that time 100,000 people gathered along Lindell Boulevard to witness the procession of the Blessed Sacrament that evening.

In 1930 Mosaics depicting the life of Saint Louis were completed in the Cathedrals narthex then after WWII a sacristy was added on the north end of the cathedral. The Kilgen organ also was replaced and mosaic work continued through the years. The mosaics on the east and west transepts were completed by 1988.

In 1943 just before Christmas a Solemn Pontifical Mass of Requiem was offered for Butch O' Hare a US Navy Fighter Pilot and Medal Of Honor recipient. in 1965 the distinctive circular Chancery Building was designed by Peruvian-American modemist architect Wenceslaus Sarmiento. You can see that circular building in my photos from the outside in multiple photos so that was one of the last editions to built onto the cathedral.

In 1961 Pope John XXIII elevated the church to the status of Basilica. However in 1997 it as designated at the Cathedral Basilica by Pope John Paul II who honored this building and eventually visited it in 1999 when he came to the United States. The symbols of its status the Tintinnabulum or bell and the Ombrellino or rather umbrella flank the high altar as a reminder of its special status of this church being a cathedral basilica.

The cathedral still kept undergoing changes even after its status change for example the Sacred Heart Of Jesus Shrine located in the west transept was consecrated by Archbishop Raymond Burke on June 17, 2007 and in 2008 the church underwent renovations to meet the national historical landmark standards.

They often called this cathedral mother church because it played a crucial role in the cities early develop and its establishment of the Catholic faith in the region. On top of that in 1834 it was the first cathedral church west of the Mississippi River. In 1971 it also was the officially designated at a City Landmark. The Church also was made with Missouri Limestone which can be found along the bluffs of the Mississippi River.

Its really not just a church or place of worship but its a historic landmark and represents the faith of the cities Catholic Community. Even if your not a very religious person like me you can appreciate its history and what it represents to the city of St. Louis. All the way from its manicured grounds which is full of nature to the beautiful mosaics and gold lined archways within. Yes you heard me the inside of the cathedral is lined with gold everywhere which shows off the cathedrals prestige and wealth.

The Mosaics on the interior had begin in 1912 and were not completed till 1988. They contain 41.5 million glass tesserae pieces in more then 7,000 colors covering 83,000 square feet and its the largest collection in the world outside of Russia.

While the Mosaics ere designed and installed by Tiffany Studios on the side chapels and sanctuary wells the main cathedral area mosaics were designed by August Oetken. It took dozens of artisans including Hildreth Mejere of Ravenna Mosaic Inc. and its father and son team Paul and Amo Heuducks who spent their entire lives almost working on them along with Emil Frei Inc. of St Louis. So the mosaics alone were a huge undertaking with decades of work because even though the cathedral had mass in 1914 it would not be till modern times when the walls were completed with the Mosaics to actually say it was complete.

The Narthex of the church depicts the life of King Louis IX Of France the namesake of the city and church. While the rear dome includes mosaics of archdiocesan events while the main dome by Jan Henryk's De Rosen depicts biblical scenes from the old and new testament. In a sense the entire cathedral is a work of art and its something everyone should at least see once in their lives. Which is why I wanted to bring this location to our website.

Not everything we do here is about the paranormal sometimes its just about amazing locations and history. Because people who interview me often ask me about that and I feel the sites we add here are relevant in education others. Does not mean you should not take it upon yourself to visit the cathedral because what you might see might differ then what I seen upon my exploration.

If you find it or have time the churches basement does contain a museum dedicated to the Mosaics found within the church, religious artifacts and even the Kilgen Organ. Also in the churches undercroft is a chapel dedicated to the former leaders of the Archdiocese. Currently, Cardinals John J. Glennon, Joseph Ritter and John Carberry as well as Archbishop John L. May are buried in the crypt here. I wish I had gotten a chance to see the crypts but the cathedral is a big structure so its easy to miss things just as certain areas are off-limits unless you are clergy but if I could id had loved to see more.

Honestly, I have no doubt that the church is haunted the history within these walls is rich. Their is quite a bit of spiritual energy here and like most cathedrals they all have a spooky tale or two. The paranormal is only a small part to what we do here but at the same time I wanted to make this edition fun, educational, colorful and full of what St. Louis is really about so we also added the Zoo since in between we went here while also spending time at the Cathedral so its a nice mix of things people can enjoy on our website for years to come!
