Bowman Lake may just be one of the largest and most majestic of the dozens of bodies of water which reside within the Tahoe National Forest. To reach this lake you will drive on a curvy paved road which will take you past many various side roads which lead to places like Lindsey Lakes, Lake Spaulding and other smaller lakes which in my opinion are a bit touristy given the fact that they have paved access. However if you can continue the road will ascend for nearly 15 miles along the cliffs of a massive canyon till you are approaching its massive dam. The road gets very rugged were talking rocks, dips, ruts, drop offs and very narrow sections of it. Which is what might deter most people from making this trek. When you do finally reach the lake Red Hill and Bowman Peak come into view as you drive high up on cliffs along its north shore. Which eventually descends down to the lakes shore where you can camp along its many pristine coves. One of the most prestigious sites you can see is at sunset when Red Hill is illuminated by the sun for a very short amount of time just before dark.

While we may be a paranormal site were so much more then that as for us we enjoy chasing history along with mysteries. But journeys of our rescue dogs, adventure, nature and unmasking these gorgeous locations so that the world can enjoy them the way we did. Bowman Lake is a very popular area then again it sits in the heart of the Grouse Ridge area which has some of the best outdoor hiking in all the sierras and is home to years of strange bigfoot encounters which is what drew my interest here in the first place. Years of folks finding tracks, hearing strange vocalizations and sightings most of them which had taken place surrounding Bowman Lake. So for me just being a part of it saying we camped, hiked, explore and did our best to research what we could is truly an honor I get to share with our viewers.

While the lake may have beautiful views nestled back along Canyon Creek which meanders above and below the lake is its majestic waterfalls. While the Upper Falls consist of a single drop which drains into a deep wide pool the lower falls consist of smaller narrower tiers which pour out into a deep section of the creek where many folks swim. Which is what makes the area so popular because people love to swim in the waterfall pools but be warned the entire Bowman Lake area is heavily overrun with snakes. We seen snakes everywhere on our journey although it did not stop us from enjoying the water it may deter most folks. As a matter in fact I came across a neon blue and pink snake which had some gold also on its scales. I am not sure I have ever came across a beautiful snake in the sierras like the one we found on a rock near our camp site which my dog scared off.  Their is quite a bit of nature in this basin ranging from raccoons to rare snakes, lizards, deer, black bear and some really good sized fish found in this lakes waters.

Canyon Creek is really a major tributary of the South Yuba River which starts at Baltimore Lake sitting at about 7,400' in elevation. At one time
along this lake sat Baltimore Town also known as Wightman's Camp which gad trace amounts of mining transpiring up on English Mountain nearby. You can see English Peak from Sawmill Lake which was one of our other projects we did in connection to Bowman Lake since the two are so close together. While most of the gold rush mining camps no longer exist back in the 1800's miners did flood the area at one looking for placer gold along Canyon Creek. While others miners searched beyond the canyon founding other towns within this region like Bloomfield, Lake City aka Painsville, Graniteville, Meadow Lake aka Exelsior, Washington, Emigrant Gap, Nevada City and many other small towns. While some may have been part of mining camps others were part of lumber camps cutting timber to be used in the mines. Some of that timber also went towards the construction of much larger towns like Virgnia City Nevada and Truckee California.

Once the creek leaves Baltimore Lake it flows north for less then a mile entering French Lake Reservoir the entire lake is manmade and the dam found here was first constructed in 1859. Once the creek flows below the dam it enters a second man made reservoir Faucherie Lake then 1.4 miles further it enters Sawmill Lake and eventually ending up in Bowman Lake. Bowman Lake is far from dry the creek is consistently flowing into this lake. The creek eventually plunges nearly 3,000 feet in elevation for over 9 miles through a steep canyon before it dumps out into the South Yuba River. I am thankful for Canyon Creek during our Wrights Lake and Quartz Peak expedition we blew a radiator hose. Canyon Creek was so cold that July I used it to keep my engine chilled while descending along it where we could coast down to the interstate where we could call for a tow. If you are going to visit Bowman Lake for three thousand feet in elevation your going to climb along Canyon Creek or you could just take the back way on in but be forewarned its just as rugged if not worst you can take that to the bank! If you do take the back way on in which I have also done feel free to make a stop at the old Webber Lake Hotel & Resort which was an important state stop for those traveling this route. More then likely the area looked much different in the 1800's since many of the lakes did not exist and today were created as reservoirs.

Bowman Lake was a very important water source for many of the mining camps below it. Back in the day the lake was not very large as a matter in fact where the lake resides today was at one time a large meadow where the Bowman Ranch sat. Livestock were being grazed here such as cattle. Without ranchers to ranch the land many of the miners would not have a food source. Beef was often sold at many of the local mining camps to feed the miners. Therefore, in the warmer months the Bowman Lake area was a summer ranch where the dam resides today. There was also a structure known as the Bowman House which sat at a junction between two wagon roads. The first route went up to Eureka aka Graniteville which was one of the larger mining towns in the area. The junction to the east however went past Bowman Lake passing by Marsh Mill. This route was known as the Pacific Turnpike Road or as some called it back in the day Culberson's Road. The route was a Henness Pass Wagon Route alternative perhaps even a shortcut and if you continued to head east you could hit Jackson Meadows Reservoir and Road. From there you could meet up with the Henness Pass or you could head SE to Summit City also known as Meadow Lake or Excelsior a booming settlement at one time.

Nearly 10 thousand miners flooded this region it was not uncommon to see wagons on the roads which were driven by us at one time around the Bowman Lake area which surround the Grouse Ridge area. There use to be a sawmill and lumber camp on Saw Mill Lake which is a 16 acre body of water while mining transpired on the ridges and hillsides of Bowman Lake. By 1850 the area was home to many miners and lumberman. However, today the area offers campers, hikers, fisherman, canoers, boaters and outdoor enthusiast with a multitude of activities. Honestly, for my friends who loves to fish if you can get back to Sawmill Lake just before sundown you will not be disappointed with the fishing. The trout that jump out of this lake area very large and its probably due to the fact that its a difficult lake to get back to despite its close proximity to Bowman Lake. Most mining that transpired here begin in the mid 1800's and lasted up until about WWII.

The entire area is overshadowed by Grouse Ridge in the heart of the Tahoe National Forest which let me add has one of the oldest fire lookouts in the state of California. As a matter in fact there are quite a few lakes along this trail that you can see from the ridge and part of the trail does descend along the shores of Sawmill Lake which is why it was so important for us to include that lake onto our site. You can hike on the Grouse Ridge trail for over ten miles the one common denominator in relation to the Bigfoot activity in the area is that both sides of the ridge have many large bodies of water. Wherever there is water your going to find this creature which may be why so many people have encounters with it up here. While Bowman Lake may not have been one of our greatest bigfoot expeditions it is a focal point for the Grouse Ridge area which means any of those dense forest, vast peaks, canyons and pristine lake shores could contain more clues leading to Bigfoot's existence. However, the real research will transpire when we can physically work with some of the locations surrounding the ridge and the Bowman Lake area which are unreachable by any vehicle that may contain the stonecold truth!
