It was fathers day weekend and it would be a big event for me or rather a very busy weekend. Most people spend there holidays at home or relaxing but I generally enjoy a mix of paranormal investigating and urban exploring instead. Not sure I could ask for a better gift then to spend time with friends and family on a weekend like this at the same time getting to do the things that I enjoy most. In this case hiking, exploring caves, ghost towning, rock climbing and good eats were all on the menu.

In between the adventure my family took me to breakfast at Grandma Hatties which is this old fashioned diner everything is homemade. But finished off the weekend enjoying Dinner at the Black Bear Diner where I had shrimp, homemade mashed potatoes, veggies with squash, hot coffee and trip tip. They also gave me a personal blueberry pie smothered in ice cream it was so good. Ill be posting photos of the breakfast and the dinner these were some good fathers day eats. I also had gotten to see the new X-men Apocalypse which was awesome with a giant soft pretzel and an IPA at the luxury theater up in Reno.

In between it all I did plenty of exploring which included Black Chasm Caverns, Indian Diggins, Old Clinton, Jackson Butte, New Chicago and Dry Town. I had a full schedule of events and explorations but also a mix of location some semi ghost towns no less all of them in Gold Country aka The Mother Lode. The sierra foothills are full of pristine, quaint and beautiful little towns all with rich history. I would even have time to boast a BBQ up in the cemetery in Dry Town before nightfall so the trip we put together was so much fun.

I lived in gold country for awhile as a matter in fact the first adventure would take place at Black Chasm Caverns which is within a short hiking trail from a place known as Indian Grinding Rock which is a place I camped at for a month when I was homeless. Its very history up here its an ancient Miwok village site and there is even a restored Indian village. There are trees hundreds of years old and if you wander the woods you will find rocks with cupules where the natives crushed acorns, nuts and berries into a flower or medicine for hundreds of years.

I just overall love this entire area and not many folks realize it but there are many caves in the area especially near the town of Volcano which is about two miles from Black Chasm. Very little of the caves in this area have been mapped let alone found but they do exist and I was excited to get to see one of the most beautiful caves in the country. As a father I had gotten to do all sorts of dude things which is why I love Fathers day every year because I get to pick the fun stuff that I like lol.

We would leave early to our first destination even in June the weather can be a bit hair raising because you have to take the pass through the sierras so you might come across ice or even snow even this late in the year. In this case I came across intense fog and some rain. I was not sure how the rest of the day was going to play out but either way I am not one to cancel anything especially once its set in stone so Black Chasm was on and I was stoked to see it. Not sure why I never checked it out when I camped at Indian Grinding Rock I use to hike around the area but I guess my goal was to come back when my life was more stable so I could enjoy it more at a later time.

I would pull up to the caverns soon after taking this woodsy road up a hill in this magical little area full of rocky outcrops and a visitors center. I had picked up a magnet while I was here as I always try to at least get one memento when it comes to places like these. On the porch of the visitors center is a massive cave formation my height its amazing because it probably took thousands of years to form and sometimes cave formations break away so its good that they are able to boast one to see not far from the caves entrance.

Black Chasm Caverns

The sun was coming on out but it was still cool and early. The birds were chirping it was still morning and everything was so lush. I would go down into the chasm with my guide she was this cute little blonde and she had some good information about the cave in detail. She did not have all the research on the caves though because prior to it I dug up what I could just so I could compare notes. She was fairly accurate but their is more to these caverns then what you will hear on my documentary so your going to want to read our article on the prologue page of our site.

The entrance into the cave system is not very large maybe 20 inches wide at most with an 18' gash that starts at the top of the hill and runs straight on down. The entrance was widened in the 1800's in turn that dynamite they used did damage the first room slightly. This is the first area id learn a little bit about flowstones and these Helictite formations. While most caves have maybe a few Helictites meaning no ore then five Black Chasm is home to millions of them making this one of the greatest cave systems in the world because of how rare these formations area.

The cave was dark and dingy water was seeping through the roof she even showed me tree roots that were growing within the cave. The deeper you descend into the chasm the deeper underground you go. I was only shown three different rooms but so far their have been eighteen discovered and more then likely there is ten times that many if in the future they decide to further map out the cavern system. But in the first room my guide taught me about a vegetarian spider and some of the life that roams the cave.

Their is a bunch of small caverns in attics and crawlspaces above including in the first room the Cascade Attic. You cannot get to the attics right now they have no stairs leading to them and if you were to climb to them you would need special permits because of the Helictites and soda straws. The cave is under protection of the government so even to explore it you need all sorts of protective gear and permits. Which is probably why so much of it has not been explored and the board walk, scaffolding, stairs etc only traverse three of the chambers.

The first chamber you go down a series of steps passing by three different pits each one looks down into the lower level of the cave system. The pits are over 150' below and you could see down into them. The guide told me about five different lakes in the lower levels but the one you can see from the first room is Reflection Lake. If you look over the platform into the pit you can see the lake and a raft floating on it. Sometimes the workers will raft and pick up dropped items. They also have lights down in the lower level so that you can see down into the cavern below.

When the first miners found this place they probably held on to ropes and stood right on the edge of an underground cliff. They did not get very far and when they realized their was no gold here they lost interest real fast. Its amazing how many stalactites, stalagmites, columns and other formations that you get to see nearly as soon as you enter the room here. But it also is amazing at high deep the cavern goes underground and more then likely the chasm keeps spreading out like a spider everywhere.

The guide showed me on a rocky wall some graffiti of two initials and she said that if they were written in the 1800's they have no idea how someone could have gotten this far into the chasm to do it so there is even a little mystery then again maybe at one time there was a second entrance who knows.  But as far as they know for now the gash in the side of a hill going down into this place probably is the only known entrance into the place.

Its amazing how your mind plays tricks with you she showed me a formation that looked like a goblin and even a dragon. I seen a few faces in the caves formations myself to be honest with you and none of them are paranormal but they are a bit cool to look at. I bet if you were in these caverns alone by yourself it would be bit intimidating. While you can rappel down to the lower level their are ladders also but it seems very few members of the public ever get that far. I think what is so creepy about caves like this is they can go hundreds of miles which means anything could be living in them alien life forms, reptilians and even bigfoot.

Black Chasms size is vastly unknown the guide told me that back in 2000 they mapped out 18 of the chambers and their could be hundreds for many miles. I am not sure why its been so many years since they have done more exploring but this is a dangerous hard cave to navigate. There are a few more pits if you were not on the walkways it is certain you would fall down one of these to the second level which is over a 100' pretty scary to think about. You may get lucky fall into one of the lakes after all Reflection Lake is about 80' deep.

In the Landmark Room which is huge btw and maybe this what the miners meant back in the 1800's when they said trees could grow inside. I had the guide take a photo of Tammy, Jarrod and Myself. It did not come out the best but when you see us in comparison to the size of the room in the background you can clearly see that this is a big chamber. The formations in this room of draperies, rows of stalactites and helictites intertwining with one another was amazing. The Helictites look like a bunch of twisted soda straws or bunches of pasta all twisted and intertwined busting out from the cracks in the ceiling.

There was also was a chamber above called the Dragons Lair which was above us. You would need gear to get to it but they want to build a stairwell going to it. You could see that the chamber was rather small you could fit a few people up there but they would have to stay low because of the stalactites which look like icicles pointing straight down from the ceiling. Its amazing how there are so many formations some of the icicle knife like formations are amazing in the Landmark Room. Its not an easy cave to navigate though when you have chambers straight up on cliffs or down in pits that open up to rooms with lakes.

I have to say I did take EVP its possible that the Miwok tribe may have stored the deceased within the chasm as it would be the same cool temperature all year around no matter how warm it is outside. Of course they probably would not venture very far simply because not far from the entrance is a straight drop over 100' below. To think I ventured in three chambers and still there are fifteen more to see is exciting but again so very few get to see them unless you are a well renowned Cave Scientist and even then you may not get access.

So many of the worlds caves today are inaccessible or rather so few get to see them. There is four to five other cave systems which are huge which are owned also by the same company that owns Black Chasm. Its believe that the chasm cave system may connect with some of those other cave systems. I know one of them is said to go five hundred miles underground and if that is the case then Black Chasm could have many chambers that might wow the world that have yet to be seen. I think they had also a light up in the dragons lair it kind of was cozy up there and the guide told me they will open it up eventually to the public eventually maybe more chambers people will get to see.

Below the Landmark Room down a pit is the second level which has the Hall of Arches and also a similar chamber like Dragons Lair called Medusas Chamber then north of that is the great north lake which is pretty amazing. I think they should be giving access to the lower levels I really do the world deserves to see this place. The more I got to explore Black Chasm the deeper appreciation I had for the world below my feet which often gets ignored. There are lava tubes, caves, chasms etc under all of our feet even major cities like Los Angeles. While I been to many caves even some lava tubes this was my first chasm so it does go down and out rather then staying close to the surface and traveling out if that makes sense.

The chasm continues to descent multiple chambers, lakes, rooms etc and just by me visiting three of the caverns within I could see plenty of other places that you could explore or continue to journey within. Its so amazing to see how some formations to blend but also to think this place at one time was underwater which they found fossils proving it here. Basically your in a 2 million year old geological museum this place is old and like I said a bit eerie in a sense. I heard of a family of bigfoot not far from here I have to wonder if those creatures know about the cave systems and have access into the chasm by some other means a few miles away living in chambers that have not been discovered yet and may never bee anytime soon.

Maybe what I am saying sounds crazy to folks but I am an explorer and a scientist so I have to think beyond the box. This chasm is beyond the box if I could spend time exploring it that would be awesome but guys like me never get the opportunity to do places like this because nowadays people only look at degrees or who is more famous. I am not famous, rich nor do I have a degree in caves but I have spent years spelunking, exploring mines and seen quite a bit of the underground over the years. I know this place is much bigger then the maps of it which ill be sure to make it available on our website.

Kind of surreal for me I spent years thinking about coming here and when I finally stood in the landmark room I was in awe like I did not want to leave but rather wanted to see more or crawl around. The problem is its expensive to take the middle earth tours this company owns and because of the protective status or how protected this site is in the future Black Chasms more in depth tours are going to cost big. This is probably why I enjoy looking for hidden chasms and caves on my journeys nobody knows about. I guess its that discovery you make where not one human has ever laid eyes on it which is exhilarating.

I am sure when the miners of the gold rush seen this place they were as amazed as I was but they did not explore more then one or perhaps two of the chambers probably being lowered down on ropes to look around. I always picture going into a cave system maybe a journey to the center of the earth or perhaps finding some secret tomb or underground city. We still have so much to learn about the underworld but if you look at some of the caves in turkey their are signs that thousands of years ago some civilizations lived underground. Their is possibly a cave system with an underground City in the Grand Canyon possibly where the Hopi tribe lived or perhaps even Egyptians which again would rewrite history.

I wanted to see the Jewel Box and Jumanji Chamber because this cave has many more beautiful sites and formations that most may never get to see. The lake water also is very blue the guide told me it is portable or I guess they use it up at the visitors center. It did rain over night so some water was seeping through the cracks which is a catalyst in how formations transpire which leads to dissolution. If you look high above in the landmark room you will see a tree root.

All in all it was a great exploration I always bring my own gear so I had a flashlight to look around peering into some cracks and holes in the caverns. Its very dim in the cave lots of steps which at the time was hard on my knee not complaining just letting folks know be prepared to climb down into the chasm and its worth the pain trust me but some areas are narrow such as the entrance which might make folks a bit worrisome as to descend down a set of very steep steps which goes down then veers right.

I hated to leave this place but it was time to go I get so busy with my projects that sometimes I forget that I have other parts of that project I need to see. This is probably why I explore sometimes from 5am till midnight sometimes crazy huh? But the truth is that I always want to see the most I can see and I feel like their is never enough time. So I had to move on others wanted to see the chasm and I was kind of lagging still looking around. I did try to video record some of what my guide was saying but it was dark here of course it is its chasm. The shrimp in the lake have no pigment let alone eyesight because this chasm is blacker then night except for a few dim lights here and there.

When I left the chasm I went for a hike in the woods to the Zen Garden. Honestly its not a garden but it was a hilly area that had succumbed to hydraulic mining so most of the soil and earth was blasted away exposing all sorts of spires and rocks. The most common rock out here you will see is blue marble as a matter in fact the guide told me much of the inside of Black Chasms mineral make up is that blue marble which a previous owner wanted to destroy the cavern for it to mine it but the government stepped in because the Helictites are VERY rare there is no cave in the world that has as many as Black Chasm does.

More then likely while we were climbing all around the rocks just below us was a cavern I am sure and this probably was the top layer or crust of it. If you could drill a hole straight below you would be tapping into a chamber. My son and I also found a ton of little dens, crevices and other places you could explore within the Zen garden. Its not a huge area maybe a couple hundred feet of spires and rocks you can climb around as the trail goes through narrow passages and through rocky tunnels etc. At one point on the trail is a rock that looks like its defying gravity.

I did not mind hiking in the woods and around the Zen garden. The garden has many trees and rocks everywhere lots of nature around also. There are butterflies, flowers growing, deer running around etc its as magical on the surface here as it is in those caverns which makes it a place some of you should add to your bucket list. My job is to report get peoples wheels turning and at times share a bit about the paranormal. Tammy was not with us for the Zen garden area but we took awhile to look around. When you see rocks like these it is pretty easy to understand why there would be a cave or chasm nearby.

At the same time even thought its unlikely you think what if a hole opens up here or the rocks are weak and you fall through. The chasm may have opened up under a similar circumstance which at one time was a small gash in the earth and later was widened for tours in the 1800's. Even though I was told there is no other entrances in the area when your in the Zen garden exploring it you find holes and areas that are dark that make you think otherwise. Then you explore them and they dead end or something so you feel this sense of disappointment. You cant blame an adventurer for trying right?

Also on the site is some gold panning or rather gemstone sluice with water running down these troughs. Its for little kids to mine or pan for gemstones I guess. Not far from there we also found an older fire engine. The grounds are rather nice here so much nature and a variety of trees. Most would never even realize their is another world below our feet. The guide did tell me very little life does exist but mold and algae do grow within Black Chasm then you have that arachnid which is native to only Black Chasm and those blind lake shrimp. There are bats but they do not reside within the chasm not sure why but that means maybe there is a second entrance nearby they come out of might even just be a few small holes in the earth.

I left Black Chasm with more questions perhaps then answers only because I seen so little and caverns like this can go for miles. The employees on occasion get to rappel to the bottom to change a bulb or pick up trash that must be fun in a sense getting to see the lower chambers nearly 200' below the surface. But I did learn some things to not just about some of the history in relation to the caves but how some of the formations form, blend together such as when a stalactite and stalagmite meet they form a column and then the soda straws or rather Helictites. I like to learn that is the premise behind journeying is to absorb knowledge so I can apply that to whatever projects I do in the future if I ever found some hidden cave in the mountains while climbing the high sierras for example.

I was not done just down the road is the historic town of Volcano it is a semi ghost town but virtually everything has almost been restored such as the historical homes, saloons, businesses etc. Their are some ruins here and there also but its not far from Black Chasm. As a matter in fact we visited the Masonic Caves recently and although these might be smaller caves it just signifies the fact that there are different caves in different parts of the Volcano area and at one time or maybe they still do connect to one another underground.

Tammy decided to walk around the cemetery there are two side by side one of them though is for the Masons. She did not want to hike behind the cemetery in search of a place called Indian Diggins. The Diggins are both a mine and cave system my friend use to explore. He told me there is a crevice back here inside the diggins that is virtually bottomless so I had to see this place for myself. Tammy was a bit intimidated by the overgrown roads, gates and no trespassing signs. I can imagine they keep people out because if you fell down one of these pits you probably would die or be impossible to get to if its as deep as he claims.

Jarrod and I seen a deer wandering around but we also seen wild turkey. If you take the road it opens up to a meadow surrounded by rocky outcroppings and patches of woods. I had gotten full of burrs on my socks and shoes because its so overgrown back here. I had no idea where the diggins even were to be honest with you but every time I found a small rocky outcrop or formations or a small cliff I checked for any openings that I could go on inside to have a gander. Its a bit confusing back here overgrown dirt roads, patches of woods, meadows with brush waste high, rock formations everywhere so I did not find them sad to say.

I still had fun on the nature hike there was a few areas I had to slide down steep hills but all in all we just never found nothing back here. Its hard to know where the diggins are I may have to return and study more maps and talk to more folks because I have to see this crevice that is said to disappear into the darkness. The diggins were a mine in Volcano in the 1800's it might be all made who knows or they  may have tapped eventually into a cave system like a portion of Black Chasm here which is what peeks my curiosity about them.

After Tammy roamed the cemetery and I hiked around in the Volcano Wilderness behind the town I was going to visit the old semi ghost town of Clinton. Back many years ago I looked at this cozy little white house it had a picket fence, big trees, woods around it with some views and even a fireplace with hardwood floors. I was going to rent this house we never got it but that was my first time visiting Clinton at the time so I remember it vividly.

The town it once was is long gone as a matter in fact there are basically new homes being built around here most are very nice but there really are not stores, shops or businesses. It had a stage stop, hotel, mercantile, ranch with livestock and ditches which supplied water to some of the local claims. If you were working at Indian Diggins in Volcano you would have stopped here to pick up supplies or even food. Today all of its gone you cant even tell a town existed here once and many of the home owners actually own small ranches with horses.

There is a plaque at the crossroads that talks about Clinton on a stone slab. Nearby there was a church and a cemetery. The church was about the last historic structure remaining in this town and it had been moved to the Kennedy Mine in Jackson in 2003 after it had been restored by the Garbarini Brothers. With that being said the cemetery is about all that remains so my goal was to visit the graveyard. I never did find it I went up a few roads which I had to turn around at because of homes or private property. Its possible the cemetery is in the woods behind someone's home or when they moved the church maybe the graves were moved but I spent a good hour exploring and never seen one single grave here.

Clinton sits between Jackson and Volcano kind of in the middle its not very far from Black Chasm either. Its a really quaint little area in the sierra foothills. While the foothills may not be as high in elevation these hills harbor many historical sites and nature. Clinton has quite a few patches of woods, brush, hidden dirt roads etc. I believe that the church site is where the cemetery was and today its a big open area. So its possible that the cemetery no longer has any grave markings which is why I missed it.

I ended up going up this dirt road it was not labeled or anything and it took us up a hill to a big open area where there was a series of trailers and what might have been a marijuana farm. Not sure anyone was living on site but it was hills have eyes shit and I turned around real fast got out of there. But on maps the it looks like a graveyard from above but those were not graves but rather post for whatever it is they were growing up on this hill. I did not want to stick around and find out but Clinton was a bust and we never found Indian Diggins.

Our expedition at Black Chasm was amazing there is so much more to see and when you explore this area you have to wonder if just a few feet below the surface are cave systems that are waiting to be discovered. Maybe in the future more entrances will be exposed I always was one for being the first person to see a place nobody else has ever gotten to see because again exploring is also about discovery. Volcano, Clinton and Pine Grove are all small communities that surround this chasm. Tours been going on here since the 1860's to tell you the truth and despite that 150 years of history we still know very little about the world under Calaveras and Amador Counties.

We would move on to our next location known as Jackson Butte which is this massive volcanic mountain one of the tallest in the area also probably full of caves within and our goal was to reach the summit so we could put the entire area into perspective. I hope when they open more areas within Black Chasm we can make a second go at this place but it might be years before that happens so ill be keeping my eyes carefully on this place in hopes of seeing more of the chasm someday.

Peace,

Black Chasm Caverns took about two million years to form which is certainly more then long enough to form columns like these. It takes five thousand years for one inch maybe two at best to mineralize which is caused by rainwater which seeps into the cavern forming a stalactite. This column is massive it might just be one of the biggest I have seen in any cave as its nearly seven feet where it had broken off meaning it probably was even taller. Lets say the column is 80 inches times five thousand years this would mean that it took 400,000 years to form which is nothing in comparison to the caverns age.

Like the guide told me which I already knew being an explorer of caverns their could be hundreds of chambers containing many wonders even columns that are larger then the one you see in the photo that we took. This formation was forming prior to man even walking this earth which is kind of crazy when you think about it. This cave existed prior to man walking this earth! I just want people to put things into perspective! This is why I believe gigantopithecus walks this earth and might live in underground caverns because they would have been here prior to mankind therefore such creatures would have known about them.

We as humans have not even discovered half of the worlds caves let alone explored the thousands that exist below our feet therefore their are discoveries always ready to be made kind of like this column one can only imagine the awe someone felt to remove it from the cavern so that we could view 400 thousand years of history before we even stepped foot on this earth. While I may operate a paranormal group were also an educational research group therefore its important to understand all sciences which are connected to the paranormal. We know so little about caves which can go hundreds of miles and could contain unknown species of life.

I have always theorized that bigfoot a ancestor of gigantopithecus lives in such caves and probably also knows other openings where they can leave the underground to search for food. Water would never be an issue is such caves its very clean although it has a mineral taste the rainwater seeps into the earth and eventually into the cave system thus forming columns like these. Therefore, black chasm has a constant supply of ground water and this column is living proof of that factor!

After searching around the diggins just up the road from Black Chasm I visited a semi ghost town named Clinton. I was in search of its historic cemetery next to the church which was moved in 2003 to the Argonaut Kennedy Mine. Therefore It was next to impossible to locate the graveyard probably because its on private property or no longer exist so our trip to Clinton was a bust but this is proof I tried for all of our viewers. More then likely the cemetery sat behind the church so with the church being gone it just made it all the more difficult to locate something I thought existed but on a good note glad to see that a part of Old Clinton was saved. While we do allot of hands on work with locations we also try to take some side trips to expand our knowledge of the area and so our side trip would be up in Clinton not to far away. Here is about the only thing I found that talks about the history as Clinton was a stage stop between Jackson and Volcano. While on the way to Volcano the miners and other pioneers would have passed right by Black Chasm.

This was my fathers day dinner that Tammy cooked up for me when I had finished up our expedition in the Mother Lode. She had made me a flavorful T-bone steak, cheesy broccoli along with garlic mashed potatoes. I have to say I was a little spoiled for Fathers Day Weekend between Grandma Hatties, Black Bear Diner, Luxury Movie Theater and this homemde meal by my girlfriend. Dinner was great and I was really hungry after exploring caves, ghost towns and hiking around all day in the sierra foothills!
Fathers Day Breakfast at Grandma Hatties a diner which focuses on homecooking!
My Fathers Day weekend also included drinks and some good eats at the Black Bear Diner which was recently brand spanking new up in Carson City so I thought this would be awesome to dine here for my special day. I had tritip, squash with other veggies, shrimp and homemade mshed potatoes with coffee also a glass of wine. My son had a BLT sandwhich while Tammy had chicken and waffles. For dessert they gave us icecream and our own personal blackberry pies it was so good with whipped cream and smothered in icecream. A meal fit for a king especially after a weekend of exploring it was nice to just sit down with my family relax and talk about our recent adventures. Also below is my trip to the Luxury Theater where I drank ales, vegged on a giant soft pretzel and seen X-men Apocalypse! All in all my fathers day was filled with good eats, movies, awesome adventure and family! What more could I ask for?
