Berlin Nevada and Union were company towns nearly side by side. However Berlin overlooks the Ione Valley on the edge of the Shoshone Mountains while Union was built in a canyon within this range and the Toiyabe National Forest. This is the only ghost town on record to have been declared a state park for reasons not wholly associated with its history. Actually the town was declared in the 1970's as a state park when the bones of two Ichthyosaur's were being excavated which eventually led to tours and outdoor camping up in Union Canyon.

At one time this entire area you see throughout our photos was under a vast sea. Large aquatic dinosaurs swam over these mountains and hills millions of years ago. Since then allot has changed now parts of this area are a high desert often with harsh elements which slowly deteriorate Berlin's old wooden structures seen from miles away.

Mining began near Berlin around 1863 when prospectors began to mine for Silver up in Union Canyon. Eventually a small camp would be built of course further below on this page you can see photos both of Union and Berlin. Union had a small mining district that was formed which eventually would unite with other nearby towns such as Ione, Grantsville and eventually Berlin when it was found.

Berlin was much larger then Union however if you were to search the Toiyabe Forest you can still find remnants of the town within the canyon just as the very bones of the Ichthyosaur's were first discovered by miners. Some of them miners used some of those bones as fire pokers and tools. Today however a barn surrounds the excavation overlooking the small mining camp of Union below.

Berlin was not built nor founded to a much later date although in 1869 their were talks and rumors of this area eventually being transformed into a much larger town that would not occur till around 1896 when the Berlin Mine was established. When the Berlin mine was erected then other large mining operations in the area also opened up thus causing the town to boom. The Nevada Company by 1898 was mining gold and silver consistently boosting the towns economy all the way till about 1908. Only then a few years after did the town die out and its residents moved on to less harsher environments such as cities like Reno and Carson.

Berlin and Union together had over 300 residents most of them were miners but there was other residents who also brought reputable trades to the region. The town had a doctor, nurse, forest ranger, prostitute, charcoal makers, woodcutters, ranchers, mechanics, postman and many more. The community had a post office, union hall, barns, corrals, boarding house, mills, machine shop, general store, school, church, stage coach station, assay office and even a 30-stamp mill. Just on the outskirts of town was a cemetery which today its obvious that many of the burials within are probably not marked based on the fact only a few graves are visible.

The Berlin Mine was a work of fine craftsmanship as its incline shaft had 8 levels with over 3 miles of underground tunnels. Back in the day gold and silver was not worth as much as it is today. However nonetheless the Berlin Mine produced almost 900,000 dollars in revenue. Back in the day that type of revenue meant serious wealth not just for the prospectors but the town as well. The Berlin Mill processed the ore as it resided right in front of the main mine entrance. The ore could be crushed, stamped, amalgamated or processed using concentrating tables. I believe I read somewhere that the Berlin and Diana Mines eventually were connected underground and today you can request a tour.

For many years when Berlin sat abandoned it was forgotten until about 1928 when others started to visit this location perhaps for its history our beautiful scenic setting. I can tell you that getting back to Berlin requires a trip on the loneliest roads in America so it definitely is in the heart of NV. When the University Of California began excavations from 1953 to about 1957 it then became an area of great importance. I mean its not to often where fossils of this magnitude are discovered and rather then deny the public access its just the opposite in fact where many can come enjoy the history or its fossils.

Today about 13 buildings remain on site allot of them still look as they did a century ago with old stoves inside and tools from that given time period. The town is truly a living piece of history and you can see it no matter where you walk around here. Sadly Union was the most vandalized as in the 1880's it became abandoned until the boom in Berlin people started moving back into Union. You could look at Union is more like a suburb of Berlin but nonetheless allot of what existed is lost. Its hard to believe this considering at one time the area almost had 75 buildings if not more. Its U-Shaped plot at 7000 feet overlooking the Ione valley allowed the town to be viewed at night as if it were a lighthouse beacon across the dark desert valley floor.

Today this is one of the most photographed and well known ghost towns in the west perhaps even in the state of Nevada besides of course with the exception of Virginia City. Now whether the town is haunted by its ghost of the past we can only speculate as it may take our group a couple visits to finish our research here since the area is rather large and there is allot to see. However what I can tell you is with my very own eyes seen an apparition up at the top of the tower that is built within the Berlin Mill which leads me to believe that maybe some of the residents who came to Berlin may have never left!
