It was Easter weekend and I had just spent the night driving down the loneliest road in America. When we arrived in Austin there was a blood moon the third tetrad and shortest eclipse of the 21st century.  I was only able to catch a glimpse of the eclipse due to low visibility and unfortunately totality only lasted for about 5 minutes. The blood moon was looming over Austin prior to first light on April 4th 2015 Passover weekend. From Austin I had one of the best front row seats to this eclipse unfortunately my cam needed calibration so I did not get the media I wanted but no less it was pretty cool to experience such a variety of colors that this lunar eclipse had brought. A blood moon occurs when the moon passes within the Earth's umbra or shadow. When the eclipse begins the Earth's shadow darkens the moon then that shadow begins to cover a part of the lunar surface which in turn may look reddish or a variety of other colors based on the atmospheric conditions. It does not get any better then that to be journeying in the dark at the top of the Toiyabe Mountains enjoying the blood moon or Austin. Many of the cabins, homes and structures are abandoned on the outskirts of this once thriving city.I was spending my first moments in Austin under the eclipse walking the streets in search of the strange and unknown. Austin is only one of four towns along Hwy. 50 the Loneliest Road In America and as dawn had broke I now realized staring off into the expanse that we truly were in the heart of desolation.
It all started in 1862 when a pony express ride by the name of W.H. Talcott's horse kicked up a rock at the mouth of pony canyon which turned out to be high grade silver and gold ore. This led to a silver rush by the time the mid 1860s rolled around this town boasted a lumber mill, saloons, brothels, assay office, banks, hospital, hotels, telegraph station, four hundred houses and at least 10k residents. Although floods, fires and elements have erased a large portion of this living ghost town what does remain are some of the finest structures in the wild west such as its frontier churches. Austin held the Lander County seat for many decades it also brought millions of dollars in silver revenue and for a short time hosted the Nevada Central Railroad. This was a town that boasted the good, bad and the ugly everything from epidemics to axe yielding men and frontier justice. Austin not only has one of the oldest saloons/hotels in the state but one of the last Greek revival court houses in the nation and one of the oldest operating Nevadan newspapers that still exist today. Today life has slowed down in Austin to about 200 residents. Many shops thrive on tourism and the sale of there jewelry. Life in this canyon dates back to 3,500 years ago when the Shoshone used Pony Canyon to hunt and sustain themselves.  We welcome you to journey with us as I take our friends and viewers to the way it was!

The Manhattan Mill & Mine brought in millions of dollars in silver and gold when it opened in the mid 1800s shortly after Austin's boom. Its good years lasted till about the early 1870s then many of the miners went on strike because they felt they were not receiving fair wages like the miners of Virginia Cities Comstock Lode. Although the Manhattan Mining Silver Company purchased many of the local claims by 1890 the rich mines were exhausted and the company disbanded. Millions of dollars of revenue made Austin at one point in Nevada's history its second largest city. The site had multiple mines and stamp mills today very little is left of this massive mining operation which resides above the city. At one time the stamps could be heard by those who lived in Austin and today what does remain is a few mere small piles of wood and a few rusty remnants of the past. Despite the lack of evidence of the past we discover an old miners cabin and film from the top of the Toiyabe Range overlooking historic Austin. When we reach the top you can get a sense of how remote of an area we are at with vast desert expanses, forested peaks and complete isolation from the rest of the world. A narrow gauge railroad use to come through the Manhattan that ran off a spur that went through Clifton. The train would be used to haul ore the higher grades were shipped off while lower grades were milled right on site.
Stokes Castle built out of native granite was built by an Ansom Stokes who had various investments and stock into some of the local mines as well as being a railroad magnate. He had this tower built for mainly his sons particularly J.G. Phelps during the summer months. When Stokes visited Rome Italy he felt in love with a medieval tower deciding to build an exact replica in turn in the Toiyaybe mountains of Austin. The first floor had the kitchen and dining area. The second floor was a den and living room. The third floor had two bedrooms one for each of the sons. The roof was the observation deck from on top of the here you could see for a couple hundred miles on a clear day. You could also supervise the miners you employed working in the mines below the tower. The tower had the finest of furnishings however the sons only stayed in it from June of 1896 to July of 1896 leaving it to the elements. The elements had rotted the floors out and today a shell of its former glory remains. Each room had a fireplace and they needed one as the winters in this mountain range were brutal. The tower was one of the only locations in Austin that had working plumbing. It is a historic relic in relation to the town as a testament to the great wonders built by the masons who gathered locally downtown.  Their is a a legend that the sons had buried some of there gold somewhere below the tower till this day no treasure hunter has ever found it.

When Talcott made an ore discovery at the mouth of Pony Canyon Clifton came to be shortly before Austins spurt. It was a mining camp which offered flat land and wide streets. It had everything from a Wells Fargo Office, Hotels, Saloons, Bank, Stores and a large mill. The problem was is that Austin was growing at an astounding rate therefore despite the close proximity between the two camps Austin grew to be larger therefore it won the Lander County Seat. By 1867 Clifton's Mill closed down and most of the folks had abandoned this canyon town. New growth would come into play when the Nevada Central Railroad built there terminus here in 1880 which operated in the region till the 1930's. Ansom Stokes tried to revitalize mining in the area as his tower could peer below onto Clifton and any mines he had claim too. Thus Stokes built a monolithic stamp mill in 1890 to replace the abandoned one. This is the mill you see in our video and its one of the last remaining relics left behind of old Clifton. Today where the terminus resided is now a rodeo and there are a few smaller remnants left behind such as a powder keg room. Without Clifton the birth of Austin may never have transpired. Clifton was a sister camp to Austin and over the years both seemed to be locked into a competition with one another. The winds were getting up to 50mph therefore the film is hard to hear welcome to the badlands!
