The Mokelumne River Canyon was a very sacred place for the early Miwok and Washoe Native tribes. There were other tribes also that inhabited the canyon as well but very little was known about them perhaps because they were so low in numbers.  Both of the main tribes were on fairly good terms as a matter in fact they shared the canyon for the sole purpose of trading with one another.  While the Washoe handed over Obsidian to the Miwok which could be used in various tools like arrowheads the Miwok traded over acorns, salt, dried fish and clam shell money. Both tribes considered the Mokelumne River canyon neutral ground therefore they were not at war with eachother nor did they control the canyon for themselves.

The canyon itself was formed over thousands of years of the raging waters of the Mokelumne River and carves out by the glaciers of the last ice age which swept through the entire area.  When the glaciers retreated life began to thrive here 12,000 years ago so the canyon itself is very sacred to the indigenous people who hunted and gathered here. I first learned about Salt Springs Reservoir when I stood on top of the canyon looking down into it and thought to myself wouldn't it be grand if I could hike along the river and reservoir thousands of feet below.

When the Spaniards came down the river a few hundred years ago their missionaries tried to force Christianity onto the natives. The natives that did not comply were often beheaded and so their skulls were placed along the shorelines all the way from the Mokelumne River canyon to as far south as the River of Skulls. It was not a pretty site as a matter in fact it was a massacre so not only do you have an area that has some of the best Bigfoot sightings but this canyons shorelines are haunted by the ancient spirits of the past.  Salt Springs Reservoir also resides in a place called The Sierra Triangle which is known for its UFO sightings as well. So when you put it into perspective the entire area surrounding the reservoir is very strange as well as extremely remote. Getting down to the reservoir is a very difficult trip whether you hike it on foot or take the steep canyon roads down to it both of which I have experienced.

There are other ways you can reach Salt Springs as it resides below the Highland Lakes Carson Iceburg Wilderness and Bear River Reservoir & Cole Creek which both areas I have done extensive Bigfoot research at. In our findings I came to realize that between those two areas and Salt Springs they are all serve as a home for Americas great ape the Sasquatch. This is in addition to all the anonymous reports that I get sent to me about Bigfoot sightings that take place surrounding Salt Springs Reservoir so we felt this was a great project to bring our viewers to raise awareness that something cryptid lurks here. Being that our group has found evidence of this fact in other areas surrounding the reservoir its very apparent that this creature would have to pass through the reservoir to get to these other areas thus making it a travel or migration route for such a creature.

The dam you see at Salt Springs Reservoir was built in 1929 it was the one of 19 found in this region of the sierras. This hydropower project would generate electricity for nearby towns like Volcano California.  In the 1920's many of the ancient old trees had been cut down then the dam was built which held back the waters of the Mokelumne River creating the reservoir or man made lake you see in our photos. The water itself would be forced through a smaller pipe which would flow through the powerhouse causing a turbine to spin thus creating electrical current. However due to recent drought in California the reservoir is very low and the Mokelumne River is barely flowing which means that in the future local towns may have to find another means to generate their electricity. In the 1800s prior to the concrete dam their was a wood one which broke and just was not sturdy enough to contain the raging waters of the Mokelumne River.

Half of Salt Springs reservoir is in Amador County while the other half is in Calaveras County at about an elevation of 3,900'.  The reservoir itself is 141,900' cubic feet of water while the dam itself stands about 332' in height. Although construction occurred in 1929 it was not completed till 1931. It is owned by Pacific Gas and Electric. The water that does not follow into the 44 MW powerhouse gets released further downstream at the Tiger Creek Conduit.  The damn as a history of poor consolidation of the rocks during construction. The concrete face has been cracked many times by the movement of water thus it has sprung many leaks. The surface of the damn consist of these cracks, craters and shotcrete overlays. In 2005 the county installed a geo-membrane to cover portions of the dam where the leaks were more dominant.

The Mokelumne Wilderness straddles the crest of the central Sierra Nevada's within the Stanislaus, Eldorado and Toiyabe National Forest. It covers portions of Alpine, Amador and Calaveras County. A good portion of this wilderness surrounds the Mokelumne River and the east slope of the Carson River.  It also covers portions of Blue Lakes California, Round Top Peak and the Thunder Mountain California region which our team has also done projects at just to put its size into perspective for you.  Much of the area is dominated by volcanic ridges and peaks. It is a harsh wilderness full of brush and extremely rugged making it the perfect ecosystem for a bigfoot like creature to remain elusive and sustain itself.

The other portion of Salt Springs Reservoir lies in the Eldorado National Forest which has a gross area of 786, 994 acres. In order to get to Salt Springs Reservoir you have to traverse this national forest whether its via road or hiking it on foot. Portions of the El Dorado Forest reach into Amador, Alpine, Douglass and Placer Counties. It borders the Tahoe National Forest and southeast of the Humboldt -Toiyabe National Forest then to the south the Stanislaus National Forest.  The Mokelumne Wilderness seems to be nestled in the middle of all of these areas so that should put the size of the wilderness and forest into perspective a little bit as to how a creature like Bigfoot can continue to remain so elusive.

At the eastern edge of the reservoir is a small salt Spring which is completely natural its an area we will work with eventually when we are able to find a safe feasible path to get there to check it out. This region is truly a gem especially when it comes to its fishing being that its rumored to be the best in the mother lode. The reservoir contains Florida strain Largemouth Bass, Crappie, Red Ear Perch, Bluegills and even Catfish. If per say Bigfoot needed to catch fish to sustain itself using them as a dietary supplement then it could here no doubt besides all the wild berries that grow and the abundance of wildlife so it is plausible to say that this creature could survive in this very remote region of the sierras.

History -Wikipedia

The Mokelumne River basin was originally inhabited by Yokuts, Miwok, and Wintun Native American people. The lower (western) basin was the most densely populated, with numerous villages between the fringe of the Sierra foothills and the eastern edge of the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta. This area is believed to have been predominantly Plains Miwok; various subgroups that lived in the Mokelumne River basin included the Mokellos, Lalas, and Machacos. The Miwoks called the river Wakalumitch, possibly meaning "big river".[14]

The first European parties to explore the river were likely Spanish military expeditions in Alta California in the late 18th or early 19th century. The name Mokelumne was first recorded by Spanish missionary Narciso DuránMuquelumnes in 1817. However it was not until 1830 when the first permanent European settlement was established on the Mokelumne River, at Happy Valley near present-day Mokelumne Hill, as an outpost for French fur trappers.[15] John C. Frémont is credited with establishing the modern spelling of the name Mokelumne circa 1844. as

During the California Gold Rush, the Mokelumne was a major gold-producing stream. The first person to discover gold in the Mokelumne was likely Charles Weber in 1848. Weber did not stay in the area for long; he moved on to the Coloma diggings on the South Fork American River before establishing a supply center at present-day Stockton, several miles south of the Mokelumne River. Most of the Gold Rush profits and trade on the Mokelumne River would end up passing through Stockton. Also in 1848, Samuel W. Pearsall found gold at Mokelumne Hill, which by 1850 grew into a boomtown of 15,000 people. [16]
