I heard about the Bear River Reservoir back in 2008 during a short time when I actually lived in the sierra foothills. Besides tales of its enormous trout being caught here it seems to be a focal point for allot of Bigfoot sightings and activity. After reading campers numerous tales on the web for so many years I decided that I would set off on my own journey to find the beast little did I know that out of all the years of searching for such a creature would I nearly come face to face with one.

You have to understand that Bear River Reservoir is in the heart of the High Sierras their is no gas for miles or grocery stores. This is the wilderness a very thriving one with quite a few lakes, creeks, rivers and woods. The Bear River alone is 19.4 miles long and is a tributary of the Mokelumne River. The entire river starts at Kirkwood merging into the Upper Bear River then Continues downstream leaving the Lower Bear Reservoir where it meets the Mokelumne. Although the dam and reservoirs are owned by the Pacific Gas and Electric Company as part of the Mokelumne Hydroelectric project this area is very primitive. The entire river traverses through the El Dorado National Forest which has some of the highest Bigfoot sightings and activity out of any state forest in California.

The lower Bear River Reservoir alone has 727 surface acres and a shoreline of 9 miles. The upper Bear River Reservoir contains 166 surface acres and 2.5 miles of shoreline. They refer to the headwaters below the two lakes as "Devils Garden" and just outside of the reservoir is a place called Devils Lake which is an area we will eventually integrate into these pages you see above.

A part of the old emigrant wagon trail travels through this region mainly used by gold seekers. But in the 1800's over 200,000 pioneers made the journey some even camped along locations such as Cole Creek and the Bear River. There was also the Plasse Trading Post who built a small business along the emigrant trail in 1852. Ultimately many survived the journey while others met their doom in this vast wilderness.

Prior to all of this transpiring this was an ancient Native American trading route till in 1844 the white men came to the sierras to explore and map out the region. John Fremont and Kit Carson were the first. Eventually when most of the trading route was paved over they would call this Kit Carson Pass or as some of you know of it Route 88 which passes right by the Bear River Reservoir. More or less the men stumbled across many jewels along their way to Sutters Fort in Sacramento California.

In 1848 it was the Mormon Battalion who came through this region on the way to Salt Lake City Utah. I believe some of those members stopped in Genoa and Dayton in search of gold. They never did stick around long enough except to survey such places which today are some of the oldest settlements in the state of NV. Traveling these mountains was deadly the snowstorms brought a horrendous amount of snow for example members of Donner Lake ending up feeling the wrath of the sierras.

By 1849 the Gold Rush brought allot of wagon trains it was not a very safe trading route as at times the pioneers would have to unload their wagons just to get it up the steep hills in the region. It was not till 1862 a wagon road would be built which for the most part follows the route today with a few minor exceptions. Lumber and materials could be brought in from the sierras to places like Virginia City, Gold Hill, Comstock and Silver City Nevada!

From 1952 till about 1972 a ski resort called Peddler Hill was opened to bring in tourism in the area of course Kirkwood stole the limelight miles up the road along with other major resorts. However back during that time this would be the point furthest east where snow was plowed. The resort overlooked the entire Bear River Reservoir region so at the same time you were able to ski you could also look right down onto Bigfoot Country!

Today the area serves fishermen, boaters, campers and hikers all alike. I see it as so much more then a recreational location as their are places surround this reservoir nobody has seen or been to in years. Bordering the Mokelumne wilderness its very vast but it also will make you or break you. Their are allot of bear in the woods I believe some of them are mistaken for Bigfoot but not all cases.

Although their are many deep areas you can hike, camp and journey through Cole Creek is a jewel. I do not have the length of it except that it starts at the Mokelumne Peak and eventually drains into the North Fork of Mokelumne River. Their is another reservoir in the region called Salt Springs if you check out the scenic photos you will see it off in the distance from atop of a peak we hiked to the top of to bring our viewers these photos. We eventually will be adding Salt Springs to our pages in the future along with the north fork of the Mokelumne River so yes this is an ongoing project for our society and team.

This is an amazing location with allot of unique features that are only found in this region. We speculate due to its seclusion and harsh wilderness this may explain why this may be one of the last great wildernesses left in California where Bigfoot can remain free from the harm of humans. Their is so much wildlife, creeks, lakes, rivers and forests that it would be able to sustain such a cryptid such as Bigfoot. It is no wonder why I feel so honored to bring our viewers a whole new chapter into North America's Great Ape!
