Hudson Nevada came to be around 1911 unlike many of the other ghost towns found in the region this one was one of the last to arrive in this region and one of the last to go. In a sense the town still lives on to a degree with many new housing develops in Smith Valley along with the Walker River Resort known for its hot springs surrounding the old town site. Today not much remains but a few deplorable structures, broken glass, bean cans, wood railroad ties, rusty remnants that scatter the town site and rotted fencing which may have been used to house livestock. When the train came through Smith Valley it ran through a small hamlet known as Wilson which sat at the mouth of the canyon where the tracks would continue on which led to the town of Hudson's growth.

When the town was erected it was not very large it probably had anywhere from 50 to 100 residents in 1911. I would not call this much of a town however it was relevant in the sense that it served as a local freight and stage station. It had boasted a post office in 1911 which closed by 1917 then reopened in 1918 only to be closed for good in the 1940's. When the rail station was built they called it Smithville named after Smith Valley where the town remains within the heart of this lush rich land. Some of the locals objected to the name therefore they decided to call it Hudson and a W.C. Orem would be responsible for designing the town itself the rest would be history. The town had taken on the freight stations name of Hudson and although it was very small it was a relevant site during its heyday.

The Nevada Copper Belt Railroad Company had laid tracks right through the center of town in 1911 which contributed to Hudson's growth. Many of the local ranchers had took advantage of the railroad in Hudson as they could export livestock and crops to other towns in the region via railroad. Such mining towns depending on the railroad in Hudson so that they could get in consistent fresh supplies of food and goods to sustain themselves.

The railroad itself ran a 45 mile loop through Wabuska, Thompson Smelter, Nordyke, Wilson, Ludwig and Mason Nevada. A spur also ran through to Wellington, Bodie, Bridgeport and Aurora as well therefore when these other towns needed supplies they depended on Hudson and ranchers of Smith Valley to supply them with necessities in order to survive. Although the prime directive of the town was to haul freight up to Ludwig Nevada for the Nevada-Douglas Consolidated Copper Company which was about 11 miles to the north it also served other mining companies to haul ore through such as The Standard Gypsum Plaster Company nearby. Gypsum and Copper Ore were to the two mineral found in this valley in abundance.

When copper and gypsum became less abundant in this valley it led to the towns demise along with the railroads. In 1941 the Nevada Copper Belt Railroad Company was incorporated and the name was changed to the Nevada Copper Belt Railway Company. Which stayed in operation from 1942 till about 1947 where the line eventually was abandoned. What also led to the failure of the railroad occurred in 1942 when 9 miles of track that led from Hudson to Ludwig were removed along with 2.5 miles from Wabuska to Thompson Smelter. Then in 1945 passenger service was terminated therefore the exportation of freight and goods decreased. Also with no passenger service you no longer had others visiting here looking for prospects which may have led to the towns growth but instead when the railroad fell so did the town of Hudson.

Today life has very quiet at the Hudson Town site which is overshadowed by the beautiful sands of the Singatse Mountains and the beautiful Pine Nut Range. Although the train no longer blows its whistle through the valley many of the old ranches which surround the town site still exist today. If you look hard enough you can find remnants of the town although its not that easily found unless you get out there to explore it. As a matter in fact where the station and town once stood is rather desolate as the town is nearly erased from history but alas not forgotten by those who may have resided here at one time or in this valley. The Hudson Projects intent was for us to connect the dots that led to the towns growth and its demise along the old Nevada Copper Belt Railroad.
