The ghost town of Nordyke Nevada is more like a small hamlet in the very monolithic Smith Valley region of Nevada which has been home for over 150 years to ranching. Its easy to miss this ghost town if your not looking for it and if you blink its gone. I recently found out about it and thought that it would make a fine addition to our site considering that even though most is long gone what does remain should be treasured.

The town was named after an Addison Nordyke who integrated Nordyke and Marmon machinery in the flour mill built in 1892. Today the mill is a shell of its former glory but some of that machinery can be found surrounded the site itself. The town boasted a five stamp quartz mill it also had a post office and was one of the hub centers for the Nevada Copper Belt Railroad. By around 1914 this small town began to go bust as many of its residents began to leave heading to bigger towns like nearby Yerington. Nordyke was just one of many stops along the Copper Belt other stops along the way would have been Thompson Smelter, Ludwig, Mason, Hudson, Wilson Canyon, Wabuska Nevada which were just on the other side of the Singatse Mountains.

When the town begin to decline the flour mill closed and later was transitioned into an Alfalfa Mill which really was the cream of the crop in this region for most ranchers. This was necessary as cattle were raised here then the beef could be exported to nearby boom towns like Virginia City Nevada. In addition to the alfalfa their were also many potato farmers in the region who used the railroad to export them from Nordyke by the time the rails went right through the center of town in 1910. The railroad did come later but before it was built the town relied on stage routes which ran to Yerington in turn to Wabuska, Smith, Pine Grove and Wellington. All small towns in the region had stations constructed so that the railroad could stop there on its loop such as with the case with Nordyke Nevada.

In 1904 it was also decided that the remaining railroad ties would be used in the construction of telephone poles and by 1905 it would come to the light in the small town of Nordyke. That same telephone line would eventually reach as far south as Bodie California another great ghost town we explored and investigated. Such a line ran through ranches, local towns and even some mining operations in the region. By the time Nordyke came to be was also the revolution of Americans west was becoming modernized so that traveling and communications came to light. This provided a link to the outside world even for those that were in some of the most remote parts of Northern Nevada.

Although mining was not the main industry in Nordyke many mines nearby did spring up in the region as rich gold ore was discovered a few miles from the town site. Nordyke would actually produce and process the ore mined by A.J. Van Fleet and his sons. A.J. Van Fleet was also a manager for the copper belt railroad so he could use that influence to have the ability to export the ore onto the train to be moved to Nordyke which resides in Smith Valley. The mine was near Mason in the mountains just above the town site and was that of high grade gold ore named the Kelly Mine. The mine continued to produce vast amounts of gold and continued into the 1930's by Spragg and Martin who were also responsible for the building of the mill to process the ore.

Just like any town it did contain some notable residents as well some of them lived there lives around Nordyke. Many of them had ties to mining operations or businesses in other nearby towns while others utilized this lush land for ranching. One of those names that rings a bell is Joseph Wilson who passed on at the age of 94. This was a man who was involved in mining, politics, NV banking and ranching. By the time as a child he reached Nevada it was not even a state as like most families he came to the area after a five month wagon trip from Missouri to the west. His mother was the first white woman to settle in Mason Valley while his father was a rancher and was responsible for framing the Nevadan Constitution before statehood in 1864. Joseph L. Wilson later attended school in the town of Pine Grove Nevada I know because during my travels I did visit this schoolhouse which burned down shortly afterwards. It was not a large school but many of the kids in the region did attend it like Wilson. Later Joseph Wilson would move onto the Heald's Business College in San Francisco and while living in Nordyke became involved with the Pine Grove Mining Company other then like his father being a rancher in Nordyke. He was responsible for the operation and construction of the grist mill in Nordyke and in 1918 his home was lost to a fire one of many in the area which swayed him into moving to Yerington where he passed away in 1954.

We also have other notables for example a Joseph W. Wilson Jr. was a rancher in the area who often raised hogs who was an agricultural agent in Lyon and Mineral counties. Its quite possible that this was the son of Joseph L. Wilson and if that is the case then it means the family for three generations had a historical foothold over the Nordyke area. Which brings to mind another prominent individual Fred Bohm who was a managing director for the Lyon County enterprise who modernized the Flour Mill which would be transitioned into an alfalfa operation with electric motors that would power the mills operation. In 1949 the Sierra Pacific Power Company completed its electrical lines from the highway to the mill site in 1949 and thus other business in the Nordyke area. Fred Bohm was the head of the Lyon County Milling Association and for many years oversaw this mill. The alfalfa could be harvested then processed right downtown Nordyke then exported it was just another tidbit in the towns long history.

Nordyke seemed to have allot of Wilson's not sure if they were all related but J.I. Wilson was a very prominent woman who taught at Pine Grove school and was one of the more well known women in the state of Nevada. Being a teacher she also had a knack for mining so in a sense she was a bit of a freelance prospector while also living on a ranch in Nordyke. She was born in Genoa prior to Nevada becoming a state and operated the flour mill which later was modernized into an alfalfa operation. Perhaps her interest became to be in mining when she lived in Pine Grove as she was teaching there at the time many large ore veins were discovered. Sadly Mrs Wilson passed away in 1925 in an Oakland hospital after she became ill in San Francisco and had an operation that was did not go in her favor.

It is stories like these that truly make Nordyke a great place to explore if your a history buff like myself. Not much remains today you can see a few foundations, old telephone poles, historical home, mill and even what appears to be remnants of some kind of restaurant. The grounds are scattered with clay pipes, agricultural equipment, debris, bean cans and machinery. Very few people who traverse the highway ever pay mind to the site considering how overgrown it is but the stone ruins are quite impressive definitely worth a gander. I cant say that ghosts haunt the town site but the area dates back to the 1860's when ranching was just beginning to become mainstream in the silver state and mining booms were occurring everywhere around the valley that this town resides in.
