Comstock Gold Mill

On my way to the mill I drove past two wild horses the one stopped at the drivers window and made this loud sound. I do not think he was having it with me a foot or two away but then again he came to me. Its very common to walk around Virginia City and see some wild mustangs just strolling down the street. I always try to interact with them by taking photos or video because it really goes together with our investigations.

I went past the Virginia Truckee Railroad and they had that Thomas the train rides the problem is they charge 20 dollars and I really feel its not worth the cost. Most of the people who take the short train ride often never really delve deeper into Virginia City. How I knew that is people were parking up at the mill then getting right on the train. But these mills and other museums do rely on others to visit so that they can remain open.

You figure over 200 people ride the train each time at 20 dollars a pop and all day long they are making some decent money. Outlaw told me the money however goes towards the city so in reality its a really great event just a tad bit to much. However on a good note in the near future I will take the train here just not Thomas sorry lol. I can only imagine if I asked my teens hey you want to ride Thomas the train what they would tell me lol.

The mill itself is very special for me as Joshua Hendy had it built and it was one of the first of its kind in the Comstock Lode. I also visited Hendy's sister mill two months ago at a place called the Gold Bug Mine Park which is actually the original area where Hangtown grew which eventually was named Placerville. So both mills are very similar in size and their methods of extracting the minerals from the ore.Good men died here if the mercury did not poison you to extract the ore the Savage Mine next to the mill would get you. So with that in mind more then likely there probably is some energy surrounding this 150 year old site.

I met with Outlaw Dave who happens to be a very nice guy has allot of good local history information so if you go here make sure you connect with this guy. He also is in the Virginia City wild western shows and shootouts. I remember seeing Outlaw back in 2011 when I first moved out here and when he gave me a tour of the mill it triggered my memory especially after seeing a photo of me at the mills entrance wearing wild western attire. The nice thing about places like Carson or Virgnia City is its a very wholesome area to live everyone kind of knows one another in a way were really all true Nevadans are about hospitality and adventure. I know Outlaw Dave has the same love I do for the wild west and of course the preservation of this mill.

I try to make friends wherever I go that way I have a chance to come back to these locations later on or help promote them for preservation purposes. Outlaw told me things about Virginia City I never knew such as they had brought the kids through the mine then up the shaft to the Fourth Ward School House I investigated last year or about how the Chinese had a deep shaft that went under the town that way after they mined all day they could head through the tunnel back to China town. That is because the Chinese were heavily discriminated upon and sometimes even murdered.

The Savage Mine had its fair share of grizzly accidental deaths but even though its been sealed shut the mill today still stands in its former glory. Outlaw actually had gotten it to work again and he turned it on. I almost had tears in my eyes there are only a few working stamps in the wild west and this is one of them. The thousand pound stamps are loud back in the day when there were a 100 mills in the area you could hear these ore processing mills no matter where you live in the city. They were so loud that most men went deaf after about 6 months.

But it was pretty cool to visit the mill allot of the access is restricted this is because many of the stairwells are falling apart and there are allot of hazards. I know because I go to mills like this all the time and well if your not careful you can get hurt lets just leave it at that. The mill itself is dark, dungy and full of dust from the desert. You can see from the main floor a level below with this old truck and workshop. There was also pulleys, ropes, sand bags and a machine that water pours over it which was used to collect the gold. There is a boiler and a stair well that goes to an upper floor. From the main floor one can see most of the mills machinery its pretty intriguing to see that all of it is still there.

Outside of the mill is a wagon, massive gears, ore cart wheels and all sorts of relics of the past. Outlaw shoved me this one machine where you put your bars into and as there cooling the assay would come by to sample a sliver to measure the grade of the gold or silver. Every piece of machinery found on site has a story and at one time was used for something. You can see where the Savage mine shaft was collapsed but he told me it was a spiral shaft that went to about 1600' deep and met up with the Sutro Tunnel. We were also talking about the Combination Mine which is nearby and I been to it but that shaft went down to about 3200'.

The mill resides in the middle of the Comstock so besides servicing the Savage more then likely other nearby mines utilized it as well to process there minerals. Also outside is a water tower and a windmill its the real deal nothing here is fake its an indoor and outdoor museum untouched which is why I really adore this place There are also cogs, ore carts, wagons and ore kegs scattered at the site. Outlaw told me they are adding on to the property and I could see where a carpenter was building this structure that said Virginia at the top of it.

I did notice quite a few people passing by this place but nobody was up here but us. Allot of what Outlaw said to Tammy she understood because I filled her in ahead of time about the mill and slowly I am breaking her in when it comes to mining history in the west. More or less my day was made just seeing the stamp mill fully working because I been journeying in the west trust me there is not many. I know of one other one out by Sierra City I want to see but actual working stamps are a rarity that at one time crushed the ore that came out of the mines.

Outlaw showed us a picture then I recognized him back four years ago I seen him doing a wild western show. He does the shows downtown where they have shootouts and reenactments its pretty cool. This old timer has allot of good history about the mines, mills, accidents and the city itself. I do not meet many who know as much history in relation to this area as he did so believe me it was well worth touring the mill.

Mining was huge in VC over 700 miles of tunnels and as many as 40 thousand residents now its transitioned to tourism such as museums and small businesses. When I was filming the old relics outside Thomas The Train passed right by me as the train tracks do run above the mill. I filmed it as it went by so you guys get an extra treat with this investigation lol. There was allot of happy kids that day but allot of irritable crying ones as well. One kid accidentally swung his balloon in my face another one seemed scared of the train.

I love little kids I remember as a kid growing up having Thomas The Train read to me before bed. Its amazing how many folks pass by the mill on the train and never stop here. If you guys have a chance make sure you visit because I am telling you to see the actual stamps pounding up and down is something very few get to see especially since most stamps were inoperable by the early 1900's.

I cant say there was anything haunting found at the mill it is a creepy place. I have heard stories from other paranormal groups and people but its hard to say. I would love to access to its upper and lower levels but the mill is very old its in peril like most mills in the region. Outlaw showed me a map of every mill in the area and I was like whoa because most of them no longer exist some are just a few wood boards on the side of one of the many dirt roads found in VC.

Outlaw gave me his card he is making a movie at the mill site and PGS looks forwarding to promoting the mill site along with the Peace Officers Museum. We want to thank them both for having our group and giving us allot of great historical information so that we can put it on our website all together so everyone can enjoy it for years to come. I did not see a ghost or experience anything strange other then a couple mediocre EMF readings on the property which could be caused by power lines up on the hill hard to know for sure.

I am an old fashioned ghost buster I think that with history comes the ghosts but also very hard work. So I took my share of EVP's, readings and was very thorough. I spent to much time here perhaps studying all the old machinery, wagons and the mill site. What is there not to like allot of rust? Beautiful views? Wild Horses? History? Ghosts? This mill is one of the oldest working ones in the state of Nevada!

After our visit to the mill we drove up to the Savage Mansion which has 22 rooms its kind of a creepy looking home with ivy growing all around it. No you cant investigate it today its privately owned or at least in use as I seen a business sign hanging. But at one time the superintendents who operated the mill and the mine lived here. As a matter in fact president Grant gave a speech from the balcony here in the 1800's. If you ever have stood in front of a creepy house this would be it. Just down the street is the John Mackay Mansion which we investigated and that place is fairly haunted. Many of the big wigs lived on this street they all owned beautiful large homes that overlooks the mills and mines below.

The Savage Mansion is huge but the railings need restoration on the second story otherwise the rest of the home appears to have been restored. I seen a picture of what the home looked like in the mid 1900's and it was deplorable. It did not have a coat of paint on it just this big old wooden home on a hill with broken windows. Today a business operates out of it and I am sure they have some of there own tales to share. There is a historical plaque on the front of the property and this series of stairs that can take you above the home to main street.

I walked around the home took some pictures and made a film. You cannot visit the mill if you do not at least pay a tribute to the mansion since the two go hand in hand together. The Savage Mine, Comstock Gold Mill and The Savage Mansion are all part of one another's history. Its definitely a beautiful estate with 14' high ceilings and French Second Empire architecture. I mean its a very haunting looking mansion and you cant miss it if you are driving around Virginia City. Allot of big wigs attended dinner parties here and even through the 1900's superintendents for the mine and mill resided here.

I did go to the top of the mansion from main street which is one way you can access it and wow what a view. You can see Sugarloaf Mountain and an old lake bed that went dry. Actually its easy to see on a clear day for over a 100 miles from the balcony of the mansion. I am sure that the superintendents could keep an eye on the mine and mill from this estate.  Its a creepy little place I put on my mask and had Tammy take a few photos of me. As all of you know every holiday I wear costumes its been a long standing tradition but a fun one no less.

The sun was starting to go down I would not have time to hike to Ophir Peak even though its only a couple miles above the town daylight was not on our side. The sun goes behind Mount Davidson quickly so Virginia City this time of year gets dark fast. I was a little bummed out because I did want to take a nice hike above the city but that is okay in the morning I hiked to the top of Ophir Canyon where I had gotten some nice views of the city as the sun was coming up. It had been a long day I spent most of it exploring and having so much fun I lost track of time here.

We finished off our day having brews at the Bucket Of Blood saloon which in my opinion is far to expansive. I paid $7 for a bottle of Great Basin Ichthyosaurus beer while Tammy had a pale ale of Sierra Brewing Co beer. My brew was good sad that they were out of there famous Bucket Of Blood beer but mine hit the spot while we listened to a band. The Comstock Cowboys were playing and I have to say this is the first time I ever seen anyone play an air washboard lol. But they were not a bad band it sounded like a cross mix between country and blue grass. Tammy was laughing at me because I was trying to find a bathroom and was running through the saloon with my cape. She said she could hear me walking across the saloon and I guess I scared general Custers men lol.

Everyone was in costume almost at the saloon you had men in top hats, canes, cowboys and even others dressed as union soldiers. I seen one of the curators from the old jail dressed as a cop from the 1800's. I really did not feel out of place here I never do but its pretty funny to scare a bunch of Union Soldiers who were drinking and dancing with this woman in a long dress. I know how to have my fun even the saloon is haunted. Every location in Virginia City has some kind of story whether its about a shoot out, murder, tragedy, death or ghosts its like stepping back into time here. Just being a part of it makes it all the more worthwhile.

I was having a cigar in the parking lot which overlooks this street above this wall when a tipsy couple calls up to me and says I love your top hat. People out here are very friendly believe me for awhile we use to advertise PGS at some of the businesses. Slowly I am getting the entire boom town logged onto our site and will be one of the only groups to have put out as many investigations in VC compared to others. That way when someone wants to find a certain location they can visit our site learn the history, haunts and any other relevant information so will keep on it.

With that in mind on Halloween night I will be coming back up to Virginia City to investigate the cemetery and boot hill where hangings took place. I am looking forward to doing this because years ago I promised everyone we would take on Silver Terrace Cemeteries at night and to do it on Halloween is really off the chain! Then in December we are coming back we have another museum to investigate and I am going to try to do the Mount Davidson or Ophir Peak hike. That way we can show you Virginia City during the winter from 1600' above it! Each December I go as Lord Rick Claus and I also go partying its allot of fun trust me so you do not want to miss out get involved!

All in all it was a great day the Old Storey County Courthouse and Jail was a historic gem as much as the Savage Mansion and Comstock Gold Mill. One can hope by promoting each site it allows them to stay preserved and for others to continue to enjoy sites like this including its ghosts of the past! Our next investigation will take place on Halloween night at a location known as Silver Terrace Cemeteries as we make a return trip this month to Virginia City. Every Halloween is the one night your allowed to roam the cemetery and so were going to take on a second investigation of this beautiful pioneer graveyard.
Peace,
Lord Rick
PGS Founder

I had a pastrami steak burger at the Mustang Ranch Steakhouse before heading to the Comstock Gold Mill. This lunch was between my investigations of the old Storey County Courthouse & Jail. Its a great way to spend the day investigating a couple historically haunted sites and to top it off with a good lunch in between.

Great Basin Beers at the Bucket Of Blood Saloon after our investigation of the Old Storey County Jail and the Comstock Gold Mill. We have allot to be thankful for paranormal or no paranormal it was a damn fine day!

After our exploration of the mill I went to see the Comstock Cowboys and I have to admit I am not much into the whole western music but these guys rock out and I have seen them play on more then one occasion. In this case I watched them live at the Bucket Of Blood Saloon and it was much needed after a long day of exploring. I like the atmosphere here everyone is happy, drinking, dancing and just having a good time. It does not matter what your dressed or look like its cultural here yes but its also a great way to unwind. The one thing your going to learn about my paranormal group and even us Nevadans is we like to have a good time. I can one minute be climbing the mountains and the next in a saloon drinking ales having a good time.

Thomas The Train rolling down the Virginia & Truckee Railroad just past the Comstock Gold Mill. Remember its okay to part up at the Comstock Gold Mill but if you take the train make sure you also take a tour of the mill something so many overlook. Museums need people to pay admission it is how they preserve history and are able to continue to operate. We never want to see the mill shut down so if you can afford the big bucks to ride the train you can afford the small ones to take a mill tour.

I had to get a photo of this little stuffed Yeti sitting on the floor of the Mustang Ranch Steakhouse before we went off to the Comstock Gold Mill. Not many would believe me if I told you this but their is a yeti that lives in the Virginia City Hills and I have had a couple experiences with it myself once at night and once during the day climbing the Flowery Range. Maybe this stuffed yeti is hinting at something? lol
