In 1862 at the height of the Comstock Lode in Virginia City Nevada a two stamp mill to process gold was built by Joshua Hendy in San Francisco the same man who also built a mill in Old Hangtown aka Placerville California during the gold rush. I was lucky to visit both of his stamp mills being a huge history buff and also taking an interest in many of the stamp mills found throughout the west. This mill was operated via steam engine as it turned belts, pulleys and line shafts to operated it. Each stamp that crushed the ore weighed about a 1,000 pounds that would vertically rise and fall guided by steal rods that would crush the ore. Once the gold or silver ore was crushed into smaller particles then the minerals could be extracted from it.

I have always wanted to investigate and explore this mill for the simple reason that it really is one of the last operable stamp mills in the frontier. Outlaw Dave does offer tours of the mill and if it were not for him this mill would be dead in the water. Ill give him that he has great knowledge over local history but also how these stamps operate. The property today is very well preserved and maintained with allot of old mining equipment to be cherished. So if you like rusty relics of the past then your going to enjoy this addition on our website. This is really the only Joshua Hendy working two-stamp mill in America and it should be cherished something everyone should at least see once in their lifetimes! But if you decide to visit here he is the man you want to talk to. I think outlaw was just pleased to meet another individually locally who has knowledge about the area like I do. I am sure he agrees with me that very few folks really appreciate or have a love for this mills and mines history. The ones that do are like myself who get excited just by the thumping sounds of the ore crushing stamps which today still can be heard time to time emanating from this mill.

One of the original shafts still can be seen near this mill of course its collapsed but at one time this was a focal point for the Savage Mine which is in dispute as to whom founded it. One story describes Henry Comstock had a stake or a claim at this site and showed Savage it. The other story describes Savage as to being a miner up in Downieville California who moved to Virginia City in 1859 purchased the claim from a group of Jumpers with a few other associates and after not having much success sold his part of the claim. No matter what story you believe the fact remains that the Savage Mine was one of the deepest and most successful during the silver boom along with a few other bonanzas which surrounded it.

Supposedly a claim for the mine came to be on July 4th 1859 by A.O. Savage, L.C. Save, W. Surtevant, R. Crale and a C. Chase who all had stakes in it. The original shaft or claim reached depths of about 1,800' but in 1864 a second shaft would be erected and they overlapped each other. When ore was brought out of the mine it was transported to a mill in 1865 in nearby Washoe Valley to be processed. At the time the superintendents who overseen the mine of the original claim were Captain Sam Curtis and a Charles Bonner. It would not take long for the Savage to decline I mean lets face it most mines eventually became to dangerous to work in, depleted or not very cost effective to mine the ore from such depths. So from 1865 till about 1868 the mine had went into decline until rich ore was struck around the 600' level. For awhile the mine would prosper till in 1876 the miners struck water at the 2,200' level and stayed flooded for three years. To even remove the water out of the mine it had to be pumped out which was costly about a half of million dollars per year. Despite its hardships the Savage Mine was the first of the mines in the Comstock to connect to the Sutro Tunnel.

The Sutro Tunnel was a drainage tunnel that begin in Virginia City Nevada then empted six miles to the southeast near the historic milling town of Dayton below. The tunnel would allow access to deeper mineral exploration under the Comstock and it did connect to the regions largest mines. Sutro felt that the Yellow Jacket Mine Disaster may have been avoidable if this tunnel had existed at the time as many of the miners who died did so in a fire they were unable to escape. The Sutro tunnel would provide a safety net for the miners who could have easily escaped any deep mine shaft by simply taking the rails that traversed this tunnel and provided ventilation. The tunnel did connect with many of the local mines such as the Chollar, Savage, Julia and Combination shafts. As a matter in fact quite a few miners would transport their children to the Fourth Ward School through the Sutro then hoist them up to the surface crazy eh? Imagine transporting your children to school via mine. After the completion fully in 1878 Adolph Sutro sold his interest in the tunnel company moving to San Francisco moving on to be come mayor and constructing the Sutro Baths another historic site I have done research at.

The first five years that the Comstock Lode was booming there were at least six major bonanzas which were the Gould & Curry, Hale & Norcross, Gold Hill, Ophir, Chollar-Potosi and the Crown Point & Kentucky. If you check out our mine gallery in this addition you will see the collapsed Savage shaft, Chollar Mine entrance and just across from the mill the Combination Shaft which went down to about 3,200' making it one of the deepest mines in the world during that time period. As a matter in fact their were over 700 miles of tunnels undernearth the city however most of the mileage can be really attributed to very deep mines and some claims ended up crossing into one another.  Just about every major mine had a superintendents mansion with a vault to store the gold and silver. The superintendents could watch the mines from the balconies of these mansions such as with the case of the Savage Mansion which resides just above the Comstock Gold Mill and Savage Mine Shaft.

The Gould & Curry Mining Company had a claim between the Best & Belcher and Savage Mines. Abraham Curry is considered the father of Carson City as when he relocated it was John Mackay who ended up taking ownership of the mine in 1859. Mackay was considered one of the Silver Kings and his mine would tap into the Savage Mine at about the 500' level. Underground was similar to an anthill or honeycomb so often miners may have been tunneling and ended up cross into someone else's claim. Many of the mines surrounding the Savage were so close that this did happen I know the Gold & Curry ended up tapping into the nearby Belcher just as the Savage claim. The mining office known today as the Mackay Mansion served the Gould & Curry mine which housed a water tank for the miners. It also boasted a superintendents quarters with its first superintendent being George Hearst and eventually Bonanza King John Mackay. Today the Mackay Mansion can be seen from the Savage Mansion & Comstock Gold Mill and had many notable guest visit here such as Thomas Edison, Alexender Graham Bell, President Grant and even Mark Twain. Its a location we worked with and found it to be quite haunted much like any of the other sites that surrounded this mill in the area.

Another mine founded in 1859 the Hale & Norcross was located between the Savage and Chollar Mines yielded about 10 millin in gold. It was owned by a William Sharon and the Bank Of California. However, John Mackay, James Fair, James Flood and a William O'Brien felt the mine was poorly managed therefore they begin to purchase stock in it. They purchased stock in secret without Sharon really ever knowing and at the time people referred to him as "King Of The Comstock". All four men held a majority of stock therefore elected themselves as trustees of the Hale & Norcross which ended up paying off all the way up until about 1926. Eventually the Hale & Norcross would working with the Savage Mining Company the Chollar-Potosi Mines. The Chollar Mine was established also in 1859 by a Billy Chollar and had a shaft that went down to about 1,400' and was about 500' in width give or take and was the fifth most successful mine in the lode. The nearby Potosi Mine in 1861 hit a vein that was actually in the Chollar mine which started about four years of lawsuits which ended up in the Chollar Mines Favor. The nearby mine did end up tapping into the Savage Mine on more then one occasion so technically you could enter the Savage Mine and come out at the top of the Chollar Shaft.

Most of the bigger mines surrounded the Savage either tapped into it or its trustees worked together in joint ownership of some of the other claims in the Lode. For example in 1875 the Hale & Norcross along with the Savage and Chollar-Potosi Mines sank a large compartment shaft known as the Combination Mine. The shaft was sunk to explore the Comstock Lode at a much more in depth level reaching a depth of 3,250'. By the time they reached the bottom of the shaft they found out the ore had very little value as it was all low grade. By the 1880's flooding hit the shaft so at least five million gallons of water a day had to be pumped out and the two Cornish pumps simply could not handle it. Not to mention that at them depths their was geothermal pockets so the mine had gotten to about 130 degrees therefore they could only work a short time at these depths. After a short time miners would have to rest in a cooling room with ice to prevent miners from getting sick. Most of that ice came from icehouses in Boca California or was cut from a local lake that once was prominent in Dayton Nevada and now has vanished. The cost to continue to pump out the water was very high therefore in 1886 they shut them down and within 36 hours water rose up to about the 2,400' level which led to flooding in the Chollar-Potosi, Hale & Norcross and Savage Mines. The flooding, cost to pump out the water and obstacles led to one of the most costly ventures in the lode. If you stand at the collapsed shaft of the Savage Mine by the mill you can see the hoisting works, mill and the Combination Shaft from afar. I actually climbed around the Combination Shaft please be careful its very dangerous and its one very deep black hole of death. People have died accidentally here and Outlaw Dave told me some of the local kids were swinging over the hole before they put some fencing over it thus its simply not safe. However, despite this factor it is a historically significant site that can be seen just about anywhere in Virginia City and played a major role in conjunction of the cities wealthiest mines including the Savage who had some stake in it. More then likely the Comstock Gold Mill crushed a variety of ore that came out of these local mines nearby not just the Savage Claim.

The Savage Mining Company or as some referred to it as the Savage Silver Mining Company had been reorganized as the Savage Gold and Silver Mining Company in 1904. Since the Savage Mine was bound on the north by the Gould & Curry while on the south the Hale & Norcross Mine both shared common history. They all experienced the same hardships geothermal pockets, flooding and tragic mining accidents as well. They also were supervised by a James G. Fair in the 1870s and a R.P. Keating in the 1880s despite seperate corporate identities. In the 1890's when the Brunswick Lode was discovered the Savage, Hale & Norcross, Gould & Curry, Best & Belcher, Consolidated California & Virginia and Chollar and Potosi jointly worked together to dig a shaft. Most of the records of the Savage Mine however were lost in the May 21st San Francisco Quake so I can only give our viewers the basic facts and throw out a few names that were associated with this mining operation. Records indicate that the Savage Mine was still operable in the 1930's and their is other records I found indicating that some prospecting was done all the way up until 1959. Total production from 1863 till about 1909 totaled over 18 million in profits which today would be worth easily three to four times as much so if you had stake in the Savage chances are you were probably very well to do!

Mining in the Lode was extremely dangerous allot of men had died in the bowels of the earth below The Savage and trust me their deaths were just that Savage. For example Thomas Little in 1873 along with four men were holding onto a cage that broke Little could not hold on letting go falling to his death, 1874 John Kelty died falling down a shaft at the age of 36, Elisha Cocking fell 200' in 1876 and the Giraffe man Samuel Trezone also died tragically in 1877. That same year in 1877 160 degree scalding water was spraying everywhere when the Savage uncorked a hot water spring men were burned some nearly suffocated. In 1882 a miner by the name of William F. Grant was riding the cage up in the Chollar - Norcross - Savage Mine when he become faint perhaps from the extreme heat caused by geothermal energy and fell to his death. Before Grant had fell he became pinned between the hoisting cage and the mine shafts wall plates nearly being cut in half before falling to the bottom of the shaft. Just a month later a car man by the name of Thomas Veale fell from a hoisting cage at the 2,400' level fell 280' into a pool of scalding water and was boiled alive. He was going to the surface to pick up parts and tools to fix a hydraulic pump. Another miner stated that they heard a noise after the cage traveled 4' and when they came running to it the cage was empty. Just like Grant was found mangled by the cage it was Veale who was found mutilated due to the scalding water.

Mining was very dangerous in the lode especially between 1863 and 1880 where at least 300 prospectors were killed and 600 were injured on the job. Their was no OSHA or safety laws at the time so accidents and tragedies occurred on a daily basis. If you did not end up being scalded to death you may have ended up falling down one of the areas mines deep shafts. While some miners simply ended up being victims of fire, TNT explosions, hit by falling equipment or crushed by a runway ore cart. Many of the miners are buried up near Boot Hill at the Silver Terrace Cemeteries and the Virginia City Hebrew Graveyard. Its very evident then when you walk around these old burial grounds that most of the men here had their lives cut short due to mining accidents. The Savage Mine had quite a few tragic accidents the men that died in its depths were mutilated and some never seen the daylight again. Which is why the Comstock Gold Mill Site is very relevant in connection with it possibly being haunted by the ghostly miners who may have died prematurely. Some deaths were not always caused by tragic accidents but rather carelessness by other miners who simply may not have known how to operate at such great depths.

The Savage Mansion and Mine Office can be seen from the Comstock Gold Mill a very similar set up to the Mackay and Chollar Mansions as well both of which I have visited. The elegant Savage Mansion was designed with a French Second Empire architectural style serving as a residence for the Savage Mines superintendent and mining office for the company. The first floor more then likely served as the mining office while the upper two stories was the residential living area for the superintendents. The mansion had 21 rooms built in 1861 which boasted 14' vault ceilings, seven foot copper claw bathtub, Victorian furnishings and a Lincrista frieze in the grand hallway.  Ulysses S. Grant our 18th President Of The United States and "General of the Armies" once spoke to the townsfolk of Virginia City on the second floor balcony on October 27th 1979 after a town parade to honor him and even had a drink at the Old Wahose Club. I read that he actually stayed at the Savage Mansion and during the time Mrs. Monoghan whose husband was killed in the mine was also the housekeeper to the superintendent. When the mines closed down in 1918 the Savage Mining Company no longer had use for a superintendents office therefore they deeded the land, mansion and furnishings to Mrs. Monoghan. For many decades the mansion was in peril perhaps even in disrepair today however it has nearly been restored to its former glory and definitely is worth a gander. The superintendents for the Savage Mine could easily keep watch on their employees from the balcony and the Comstock Gold Mill below!

I highly recommend that if your visiting please take a tour that way your monies can go towards the cost to continue to preserve the mill as well as the relics that are housed on the grounds. This way others can continue to enjoy this working stamp mill and can learn a little bit about local mining history found within the Comstock Lode. Virginia City was at one time a metropolis with possibly at its peak having 40k in residents. Without mills and mines like the Savage none of this would have been possibly. We are very lucky to have the honor of visiting this museum because that is exactly what it is and very little has changed since the 1800's its almost like stepping back into time. I see it every year people come down here to ride the Thomas The Train Engine park up at the Comstock Gold Mill and turn a blind eye to the existence of this place. So my main goal is preservation and to draw in more tourism to the mill site so we can keep them stamps running. If you really like trains you can see the Virginia & Truckee Railyard just a stone throws away. Even today historic trains rumble right pass the mill just like back in the 1800's. So in a sense it is like stepping back in time with views of the Lode, Town, Trains and gorgeous views of Sugarloaf Mountain at
F St, Virginia City, NV!
